I hate how people act like Brabham were lying about it cooling the engine, if they did then they wouldn’t have been able to race, it would’ve been a movable aero piece and there for illegal, so they tried to make it 51% cooling and 49% ground effect, which actually ended up as a 55-45 split, and they gladly invited to FIA to their headquarters and allowed them to check the numbers, that’s why it was allowed to race, it DID cool the engine
Plus the FIA was going to ban it the next season, but the president of Brabham Bernie Ecclestone pulled the car out to stop the other teams from getting too angry at his team

One thing Noone ever mentions is that drag coefficient factors in the size of the vehicle. Basically meaning that if you doubled the size of a vehicle but kept it the exact same shape and proportions, the drag coefficient would remain exactly the same, despite the actual drag figures being higher. That's part of why a van can have a higher DC than a sports car- the van actually has more drag, but it's bigger, so it's shape can still be more aerodynamically efficient for its size
I was hoping you were going to mention the Brawn GP in the ground effect section of the video. It’s kind of genius how they abused a loophole to generate more downforce than anyone else and claim both titles on their first and only year (obviously not really first year since the car was originally intended to be on the Honda in 2009 but as the financial crisis hit in 2008 they quickly decided to scrap the project while Brawn’s design was already complete by the time).

I'm annoyed with how so much innovation over the years has been snuffed. There should be a racing league that's like can-am but have more safety regulations to bring it in the modern age.
I'd like a racing league where the rules are that the car has to be roadlegal in North America and Europe, has to have front and rear license plate with normal registration and insurance, and has to be driven on public roads in a parade before every race.
A racing league with 3seats and 2sixpacks water in the trunk, all same cheap engine, no Carbon or titanium. Road legal. So. Gimme a car. Imagine a caterham with 1extra torture seat and good aerodynamics /fuel efficiency
rapzeh tf? Lol
I agree. It'd be cool to see a league of truly fast cars. We think the cars we have now are fast, but with all the innovation we could achieve the actual fastest car we can make at this point in technology. Using whatever engines, turbos, wings, and materials possible designed for speed
The problem was basically that early ground effect cars were super sensitive to ride height change which meant that if you accidentally rode up a curb during a fast corner you'd go from having massive grip to almost none. Fan cars presented a similar problem but with the added issue of being so much faster in slow corners that any race track they wanted to race at would need a major redesign to make the tracks safe, a gravel trap at a tight hairpin that was designed to catch cars leaving the circuit at 60mph was suddenly having to deal with cars leaving the circuit at well over 100mph. With drivers and organisers at the time already pushing for ever more expensive safety measures at the expense of track owners this was just deemed as something the sport could do without.
I suppose the closest you'll get to a modern take on real life unlimited aero is time attack cars or hillclimb/pikes peak but being based loosely on road cars they obviously make some concessions. Nobody is willing to throw the hundreds of millions of dollars it would take to build a truly unlimited race car but the Redbull X2010 is an interesting virtual vehicle designed by race engineers which illustrates what might be possible if the shackles were removed from F1 design.

you can put hole in your car all you want but it won't beat a 4wd with 4 wheel steering like a GT-R...only nissan build it right... since newer tech show you need some vent to heat heat and downforce to turn... and don't cause too much slow down..

I think your example at 12:27 shows the opposite of downforce. The air travelling longer over the top creates low pressure and lift, not downforce.
didn't bring up frontal surface area? kinda important too when it comes to drag and aerodynamics.
FSA is literally what sets the grounds for a good or bad aero setup. Then again, this is Donut, not Kyle Engineers
The challenge is how to make a vehicle as aerodynamic as possible given a fixed frontal surface area. Therefore FSA is not factored into the equation.
@@mrslcom except it is factored in when choosing a platform, what body style/mods to take advantage of, etc. FSA is a critical base for building a good aero package. on street cars, sure FSA is fixed, but we're talking racecars here
That was also my biggest concern with this video, especially when the racecar "lost" against the family van. Yes, a F1 car has a much worse drag coefficient than a semi with a trailer, but it's also 10 times lower and generates more than its own weight in downforce
@@or2kr and downforce=drag.

Ricers: I'm gonna pretend that I didn't see that
One common mistake is the Brabham BT46 was banned, it only drove ONE race, it was withdrawn by Bernie Ecclestone(The team principal at the time) after Niki Lauda won the race. Bernie wanted to keep the relationship with the other team principals good. Nolan said the other drivers were complaining that it was kicking rubble in there faces(Mario Andretti said that) who drove for Lotus. Google the full story it's very interesting.

17:00 No a rain drop is spherical because of surface tension. It will form a flat bottom when falling because of drag at high speeds. It never forms a tear drop in air.
3:18 what is that song ?? i heard it so many times dude and i still dont know its name !! :c
@just1n didnt find it. What is the songs name ???!
FYI, everything you said about tear drops was wrong. 17:50 was particularly wrong. Rain drops are not that shape at all. They are mostly round ball shapes due to surface tension/pressure. The only reason we draw water drops that shape is because of a visual effect of fast moving small objects seeming to have a tail.
Exactly. Large rain drops are flat with concave sides. They look like red blood cells falling flat side down. Doesn’t mean you should shape your car like that.
It's not only wrong thing... it's not because a car has a low drag coefficient that's it's more aerodynamic... Aerodynamic consider drag coefficient and the surface of the car in contact with air.
In other word, a Ferrari f50 can have the same drag coefficient then a honda cr-v, but it doesn't mean the Honda has same aerodynamic than the Ferrari. The Ferrari is more aerodynamic cause there is less surface in contact with air.
What's funny is even his graphic where he superimposed a Porsche into the rain drop left me quite perplexed. The shapes weren't similar at all
it's easy to see too just take a picture of rain with a flash
Well you never see rain drops round cuz it's usually falling
Day 53 of asking Donut to do a B2B on James's golf
18:23 Kerbal Space Program taught me that the biggest problem with going fast in low gravity with a car with is that your car is WAY easier to flip over.
Great video dudes! 🤘
Aerodynamic engineers: just wing it
You should do an Up to speed on Abarth. That would be amazing to see, I have always wondered about their history.
3:58 I love that my 3cyl. N/A firefly had about double the power to weight ratio.
The Tropfenwagen was wind tunnel optimized too.
So, maybe the Tatra 77 was the 2nd wind tunnel optimized car, which was serial produced. Maybe the first successful produced aerodynamic car.
