Fun fact: in 1969 Chevy offered a "ZL1" version of the Corvette that was really more an option from what I know. They only sold a few of them and they were rated for 430hp but when tested they actually produced more like 525hp so I would consider that fair game for this list. Technically that's more than the Shelby

My buddy has the build sheet from his dad's 1966 Corvette with 585HP stock. Built in North St. Louis Corvette plant in 1966. It was custom ordered direct from the factory with a special package they had for a couple of the first generation stingray years.

some cars have their metric figures listed though. Like Königsegg.
The other thing to remember is that before 1972, engines were rated with net horsepower (engine with no accessories like alternator, p/s pump and open manifolds). Since 1972, they are rated in SAE which is a fully dressed engine with all accessories, including A/C even if the vehicle it would be going in doesn’t have a/c and a full exhaust system. Both are measured at the flywheel. Plus manufacturers have slight tendency to lie about the horsepower numbers and it can go both ways. Ford lied about the 2000 Mustang Cobra R’s (the terminator mustang) to the point they had to recall them when the buyers found out they were over rated. Ford ended up having to change the intake and retune the ecm so the cars would actually have the horsepower that ford claimed originally. GM was well known to under rate a lot of their higher performance vehicles so that they would never be rated higher then the corvette (with a few minor exceptions like the Buick GNX). The 93 Z28 is a good example of this. The corvette was rated at 300hp in 93. The camaro was rated at 275hp. But dyno tests on the LT1 camaros have shown between 253 (auto)-268hp (manual) at the wheels, which puts crank horsepower at about 315hp. The corvette is about 320hp due to less restrictive exhaust routing and a slightly different intake.

I can't take any list serious without an L88. "The L88 427 c.i.d. engine is one of the most powerful Chevrolet big-block engines ever produced, and it was only available for a short time. The engine is most famously tied to the L88 Corvette from 1967 to 1969, and only 216 L88 Corvettes were manufactured during those years. The L88 Corvette was designed to be race-ready right out of the showroom, with over 550 horsepower, and its engine is now highly sought after." This was the fastest production car from 67-69 not the p400s.

The Duesenberg brothers were genius engineers but poor businessmen. They only cared about building the cars, not how well they sold or how much profit the company made. Small manufacturer that built high horsepower cars that cost a lot of money meets the Great Depression and the manufacturer lost.

There were several American muscle cars in the late 60s to early 70s that made well over 400hp. For example, in 1967, the Coronet 500 with the 426 Hemi made 425hp. In 1970, the Chevelle SS 454 made 450. Most muscle cars made during the Miura's so-called hp reign made more power than the Miura.

the Devel sixteen is still a prototype. the V16 model is not for sale and is a test car, they made a V8 version with much less horsepower. James has a good reason to not put that on this list.

I'm guessing he left this one off for a reason but the Vector W8 apparently had 625HP and was produced from 1989-1993. I know Vector's reported top speed was never tested but I didn't think the HP stat was exaggerated. Then again I'm probably missing something.

Most of those hemis were “dealer options” and weren’t true production numbers and BHP was measured on a engine dump with NO accessories. And no water pump. You have to take off nearly 20% of the power to match what current EPA BHP numbers are today
@@devinbender8428 you have no clue what you are talking about. Most of them are believed to actually put out 500 from the factory with everything on them. Same with the 427, they were underrated because of taxes. Also they were not in any way dealer options. They came from the factory.

1 dealer options were definitely a thing to improve power and performance. Yes the 426 was “rated” to 450hp or whatever but some dealers changed out the carburetor and what not to boost it to 500+
2 the old school way of getting certified HP numbers was to take the engine, put it on the engine dyno with no accessories (power steering, alternator, water pump etc) and just run the engine alone. The NEW modern way and how Europe rated HP is the traditional way. Putting it on the engine dyno just like how it is in the car. That lowers the HP by a significant amount.
And you can’t wheel dyno a car and certify HP Becasuse there are too many factors. 426 made 425hp and likely with today’s certification process would be closer to 370. At any rate the Shelby Cobra 427 came out in 1965 with 485hp (likely closer to 450) still way more than anything dodge came out with
@@devinbender8428 the 426 was not a dealer option. Obviously certain things can be swapped at the dealer but the motor themselves. There are videos of 426s stock and never touched put on a dyno as if it is in the car and they put out 450-470. Which would be around 500 with no accessories.
