If you love cars, then you gotta love Cars, the animated film trilogy from Disney Pixar. Lightning McQueen is the star of the franchise but there are hundreds of other unique car characters in the Cars cinematic world. In this video, Nolan gives us a little background on the making of the films and dissects the logic of a world where cars are people and people don't exist. Shame Harv wasn't included in the list, I honestly expected him to appear as #1 as a joke spot. Then again, Harv doesn't actually physically appear, either. Maybe they could get Richard Hammond or James May in a future film. Hammond could be a dragster or a rimac as a jab at his most famous accidents, or May could be something that makes him look like he has long hair, and has paint deco like his mum's curtains. Rimac Hammond? Jaguar May?

Hammond is a bit of a wild one. I think some sort of small (obviously), cheerful, nippy sports coupe would fit him the best. Maybe something along the lines of a 90s Lotus Elan or an MR2
And as for Clarkson - probably a 90s Jaguar XJ. Slightly aggressive, kinda masculine, again very British but sort of like an old man's car at the same time.

The small spikes on the sides of the sheriff car are old time parallel parking assisters so people wouldn't mark up the white wall tires. Such a crazy detail to have because they were aftermarket and not super common.

Well if that never happened, Lightning wouldn't have gone to radiator springs or therfore learn anything. He would have probably lost when he got flung to the dirt in the race (since he wouldn't have known "turn right to go left"). He definitely wouldn't have pushed king to the end either. So maybe that bobble head was the greatest hero of the movie!

People say that Cars 2 is the worst movie in the entire series. But sadly my childhood says otherwise since I watched more Cars 2 than Cars 1 movie. Because I only watched Cars 1 on TV and my parents brought me Cars 2 DVD so kept rewatching it often when I was a young boy.

3D animator/enthusiast here. Actually the first Pixar movie to use raytracing was Bug's Life (there's some scenes with water droplets: which had reflective passes). Animation software also supported raytraced shadows, but animators tended to avoid them because it would seriously increase rendering times. Now with faster computers, raytrace rendering includes reflective surfaces, shadows, translucence, and reflected colors. It is interesting how detailed Pixar will get with different worlds. I attended their Siggraph
Ratatouille lecture: the rendering/shading department took so many photos of different foods to decide how realistic/stylized they'd make each dish.
What really impressed me is the amount of research that came into it. I would guess that "cartoon animators" and "car and race enthusiasts" don't exactly overlap incredibly and the fact this means they needed a TON of research into a hobby they mostly didn't share. It shows a tremendous amount of respect and love towards a completely different audience.
Also this is why Cars 2 is such a letdown. They did a lot of research as well but the script was just abysmal and it drags this awesome franchise down.

I've always liked Cars but i had no idea they went so in-depth with the voice actors, having the animators and sound teams go out to tracks, and incorporating references! I think this'll make it one of my favorite movie series now!
Cars 3 is my sleeper favorite Pixar movie. I grew up in Central NC going to the race track most weekends and the ode to small town old school southern racing always makes me feel at home

“Cars” was the first word I ever read thanks to this movie. I remember my first ever viewing of this movie, too, my dad and I were leaving this birthday party for one of my kindergarten kid-mates. I don’t know if he premeditated the scenario of us going to watch that movie or if I saw the poster and he had nothing better to do when I asked him if we could watch it. It became my most favorite movie until speed-racer came out.

No way bro, mine was also “car” becuase of this movie. I’m a 2006 baby and I’d watch cars1 3 times a day it got so bad that my parents got a toy just for me to stop watching, but it only made it worse. I would watch the movie with the toys and made sure a reenacted the scene with the toys perfectly. I would pause the movie just to reenact the scen with my toys

The first cars movie is also the greatest sports movie. I live that Lightening McQueen very clearly is the champion, he wins the race despite not passing the finish line. He proves he is the greatest racer. But he also realizes there's more to life than simply winning, and thinks about someone besides himself. That whole ending it just the perfect ending on so many levels. And it teaches kids an important lesson as well. I really love it.
Don't know if anyone pointed this out but for number 53 Tomber. Tomber is the French word for falling down, and The 3 wheeled Reliant were notorious for just rolling over if you turned to sharp. i always thought this was clever

Doc’s drifting lessons was based on a racing hornet that used small drift slides on turns to help keep speed on the tracks, which at the time were mostly dirt if not all. It’s what makes the character for me and is by far my favorite hidden detail. Modern drift literally wouldn’t exist without him.

Keiichi standarized a Racing technique as sport making it's use at angles that hasn't seen as before, but the lad hasn't invented the technique itself.

I haven't watched Cars 3 yet (I need to) but the fact they kind of show this through Doc's old racing scenes is so great
When racing a drift will always be slower than getting traction because when the cars speedo is showing over a hundred the car is under due to the spinning and breaking. Traction goes up in smoke if that floats your boat. (drifting is stupid and trashes the drive line!!) There will always be an idiot that pays admission and cheers the smoke !!🙄 An expensive engine and transmission sometimes blows not to mention clipping the wall and plastic body panels burning! First place is about $1000! The winner blows the tires first!!😡🙄
