  • Ever wondered what PS is on G-Shock watches? People often wonder how long do G-Shock batteries last. Power Save (PS) mode is an excellent way by which Tough Solar Casio G-Shock watches reserve their battery power for longevity. Here I discuss how it works, go into rather a lot fo detail, ask you a question about your use of PS mode, plus give 2 little known facts about PS mode which surprised me.
    I specifically focus on my G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400 Triple Black, however much of this information applies to most Tough Solar watches with the ‘PS’ mode.
    I hope you find this useful/ interesting.

      Because the display in the upper window does not affect the PS mode as it has a different data update than the actual Baro mode. If, on the other hand, you activate the "Baro Info" storm alarm mode, the watch will not enter PS mode until the storm alarm mode is deactivated by the user or deactivates itself after 12 hours.

    • @jacklabc4

      Because the watch enters PS mode (screen Off) only if two important conditions are met: the screen must not be exposed to a light source (which causes it to activate, normally in the morning or if it is exposed to a light source. condition, the movement sensor (which is also used for the automatic lighting activation function) must not undergo changes in positions, in fact if the watch is worn during the program set to turn off the disolay, the display will not turn off. . A function not yet mentioned is that if the "Baro Info" storm alarm mode is activated the watch does not enter PS mode as well as the "Baro Info" mode cannot be set during the scheduled time, in which the watch should enter PS mode.

    It seems that the red light makes the blacked out LCD display quite readable. My buddy was in the US army, and he said they used red lights to read stuff at night because it wasn't visible to anyone from a distance. Perhaps the GW-9400-1B was meant for that sort of thing? I know some people say they have a hard time reading the Rangeman's negative display, but maybe they intended the watch for military use? I am just speculating. Anyway, great video!

    • @stormrider1119
      @stormrider1119  Před 3 lety +1

      I think you could have a highly valid hypothesis there. The blackout negative displays generally work fine for my eyes - I think different people have different light sensitivity. And yes the red light also stops you getting after images in your eyes at night that a white light torch would cause. I have a lovely pen light that has a red light integrated for that purpose and I love it.. Thanks for the comment!

    • @johng.6222
      @johng.6222 Před 2 lety

      The red light is used in the military at night so that your eyes will adjust to the darkness. If you went from regular white light and then had to go fight in darkness your night vision would be ineffective. Exposing yourself to red light for 20 minutes give you night vision ability. Any re-exposure to White light will ruin your night vision. It has nothing to do with if the enemy can see you better or not

    I usually keep my Rangeman on the barometer mode for the day display, and it will still go to power save mode.
    They should make a power save mode for the non solar watches that could be set like the timer or alarm. You could set powersave from between 10:00pm-6:00am, or what ever you want.

    So the watch has to sense not only total darkness, but also no movement to engage. I noticed on my 5610, that in order for it to regenerate, the watch has to achieve light only, because I put the watch on in total darkness and moved it around, but it was until I turned the light on, that it came back on. To be honest, I don’t see a justification for ever disengaging ps mode.

  • @michaelkaliski7651

    While working nights, I kept the power saving mode off. It just meant that whenever I looked at the watch the time and all functions were always instantly accessible. Not essential, but a blank watch face does cause unnecessary distraction while you shake they watch or press a button to wake it up. So being able to turn power saving off is useful if you work nights or keep unusual hours.

      You must check that you do not have the "storm alarm" Baro info mode activated on the display at the times when the watch has to update the time via Multiband, because in this case the watch automatically deactivates the reception mode as long as the baro info mode is not deactivated or deactivated after 12 hours automatically ... Or as previously suggested the watch did not have a correct position to receive the signal, sometimes it happens, moreover it is known that atmospheric interference can also cause the update of the time as well as other interfering factors ...

      I turn my PS off when I'm driving during the night so I have the time ready.. but on the GPR-B1000 there's no option to turn it of would you believe.
      The PS is used on solar watches mainly because the type of batteries used in solar watches, which has a different capacity than to a regular battery. On average a non solar G-Shock battery can be from two years for those that use Bluetooth, to ones like on my GD-350 that's 5yrs to the ones on my vintage G-Shocks that are 10yrs. I'm not entirely sure, but how a rechargeable battery works, it needs an amount of space to untangle the electrons so they stack correctly without going too much science.
      The electricity charge isn't put into the battery, the electricity is used to organise the electrons so they are stacked again, something like this anyway.
      With regards to the PS will only work with the date, is meant when it's in home time... they quote the date so you know which screen, as that's the only screen with day of the week... if it's on the barometer graph while in home time it'll still go into power save, as I have mine always showing the graph... but a test is good to see, but with mine it works. Also it has returning back to home screen if you've left a mode selected for an amount of time, which could be an hour or two, and then it can go to PS if needed... very clever really.
      Also mine only comes back to life when you either expose it to light, or press any button, so if yours moves with motion then you have something mine doesn't... I've got the Gen 1 version just to add... amazing G-Shock and is classed as a master of G :)

      The fact you don't use PS when driving at night is very interesting to me and I do wonder if the newer generation has an accelerometer that keeps the watch active as it senses the motion when the Gen 1 does not... Need to look into that.
      I also need to test if it's this new Gen module only that needs day window showing or if the manual just isn't totally clear and it's not actually necessary.
      Somebody else has commented that their GB 5600 also has PS and isn't Tough Solar, however a bit of digging revelas whilst it's does have 'PS' it is only to deactivate Bluetooth and doesn't close down the screen; a nice interesting factoid that perhaps only you already knew haha...

      My GW-9400 goes to PS when the baro graph is shown, and only wakes with light or a press of a button, as I tried this morning... picked it up and turned it over in the dawn hours of 7am to me, and the screen remained blank. So worth seeing how yours performs being the latest.
      It's a great topic and does make a conversation for sure.. I mostly use PS all the time... you could roughly calculate how much battery you're saving with 9hrs of display turned off... also when mine is in PS and the screen is blank, it'll always turn on around 2am to perform a MB6 sync... but not stuck around to see what the display does after... but you can force this to happen if you set the time to 1am and then left the watch in low lighting... I've done this a few times and it works :))
      Gives me a message and we'll have a chat about channel ideas :)

      Do you mean when you put PS mode 'on' the backlight won't turn on when you press the button? But it will when PS mode is 'off'?

      @@michaelbudijanto8562 OK that's not normal. I suggest one of two things, either your battery is very low so it can't power the light (so charge it in the sun). Or the button/light is faulty although I've never heard of that before. Try the charge first then if no joy take it to a Casio dealer for advice. Let me know what happens!
