Something Strange Just Happened: Rangeman vs Mudman

- I was not expecting this to happen so quickly. The GW-9400 Rangeman has been in my ownership for a week now and it has become my go-to watch out of the office for these 3 reasons.... Don't get me wrong the G-9300 Mudman is still superb.
People may ask what is better, the G-Shock Mudman or Rangeman? I say they are both amazing watches. They are built for subtly different environments. The fact the Rangeman isn't made for mud protection specifically means the buttons are slightly easier to press. But I've owned the Mudman for 10 years and it's indestructible. I simply love them both.

Thank you for your review of both watches. This video was responsible for my purchase of both watches.
I have the rangeman on positive display, and I ordered the Mudman also. After me, Both of them are legendary watches and a must have in every Casio collection! Thank you for the review! 👌 😉
Do you find the blackout in good light has a slightly washed out look to glass?
Rageman is better equipped, but it is very uncomfortable to wear for me. I had to sell the watch after a week because of it 😭 I ordered GW-9300 (version with radio sync.) from Japan and I am satisfied. GW-9300 hugs my wrist much better and it will stay in my collection 😁
I just bought this 9400 and got it yesterday. The light is fantastic, I do notice I use it a lot more than the standard 9400. I definitely will wear the 9400, at work over my GWG-1000’s due to heavy tools, grease, hyd fluid etc.
Great news man congrats on the 'triple black'... You've got yourself a fine piece there which will be an appreciating asset I'm sure. What colour GWG is it?
One of the nice things about the 9400 Rangeman is that it is easy to buy different colour parts and fit them to customise yours. In the UK you can buy from Tiktox. I have red (carbon fibre), navy blue, olive drab and translucent bezels and straps.
Oh really? I was not aware of Tiktox I'm going to check it out now. Ive been tempted to buy a cheaper positive face black Rangeman and put on after market different colour bezels and straps but have had a hard time tracking them down. Thanks for the tip! I'm after some of the translucent colours just for something different....
@@stormrider1119 You can get the translucent ones on eBay. I just bought an official yellow bezel and carbon fibre strap from Tiktox for £77. One thing that tripped me up previously is that they don't normally come with the little screws on the bezel so you may have to swap them over. I would not recommend trying the same thing on the larger Rangeman.
Love it. Needs to be my next one😍
You won't regret it man. Cheers...
I owned the mudman. But sold it because I found the buttons a bit too sturdy to press. Another reason is that I dislike the asymmetrical shape of the bezel. The protective bezel wraps the all the way to the back casing, which makes me worry it will traps dust and form sweat cakes. All being said, it is a light and comfortable watch.
Then I bought the gw-9400 because the quick stopwatch button you can press direct from the timekeeping mode. I also prefer the symmetrical bezel design coupled with some metal touches to make it look more premium.
Yes I would say the Rangeman sounds like the right option for you. The buttons on the Mudman are unquestionably more rigid, as they have been designed for a specific reason; to cope with grueling conditions like thick muddy assault courses etc. That being said I know the Rangeman can also cope with those environments. If you don't need the extra level of protection the Rangeman makes sense to me. Also also agree the Mudman is so comfortable and light. Cheers for the experience and insight.
Sitting here wearing my rangeman have and love both.
Cheers man, such a fantastic pair of watches...
Some people say that Rangeman's lugs are easy to break. Have you experienced?
Everyone say the negative display aint a problem till they get the mudman 3031 module
I already owned the GW-9400-1 Rangeman and was considering getting the Mudman as a beater watch to keep the Rangeman nice. The Mudman is a nice watch, no doubt, BUT I just couldn’t do it. Like the Rangeman’s triple sensor, quick access stop watch too much. Living in Florida the weather can change to a tropical deluge rather quickly and having the barometer in display can really help avoid a bad situation. The 9400 Rangeman is the Goldilocks watch for me - just right. Love it.
Yep sounds like the right watch for you. Selection is all specific to each persons needs and situation. Thanks for dropping by and letting me know your thought process Sir, it's always interesting. Cheers!
I had a blacked out Mudman. The negative display was way too hard to read, it had moisture intrusion, and the buttons were so hard to get a good response from that I got rid of it. I have a Rangeman now, and the quality is 10x the Mudman, imo.
Interesting information thanks for the comment. So was it the black with negative with the gold detail? Yes the buttons are harder to press I agree, partly because of the huge amount of protection it has to stop mud/ sand/ water getting into the buttons. Strange you had water intrusion, so you saw leakage inside the glass? I never experienced that with mine after many years of use. Thanks for the comment. The Rangeman is a great watch...
@@stormrider1119 It was the GS9000MS-1. I never took it into the water much, but did wash it with soap and cold water when it got dirty. There was condensation that would form on the inside of the crystal when it was in direct sunlight, or just got warm on a cold day. I loved the design, but these factors made me finally get rid of it.
love it 👍👍👍
GW-9400 & GG-1000 share identical cylinder button guard structure
Both are excellent watches. You cannot pick a wrong one. Get both!
I have both, i daily drive both fairly equally just because of the compass functionality.. my preference slightly (very slight) favored towards the mudman because the beautiful green full EL backlight and slightly easier to read compass.. i wear my watches (left hand) slightly loose, i find it often that i accidently pressed the dedicated sensor button on the rangeman but that's just me being chubs..
Well, as an owner of the same watch on the left, I'd love to find a non-negative-display model sold new.
Really have a diffucult time seing what's on the screen most of the time...
That's interesting, I know some people say the same but I must say personally I've never had an issue with negative display. I find a tiny tilt Airways does the job to get clarity. That being said I'm sure you can pick up positive display versions on Amazon at a decent price still. Cheers for the comment...
Great comparison. I think the Rangeman is also mudresistsnt. That used to be one of the advertised features. After the Mudmaster was released, the Rangeman's mud resist feature was no longer advertised as to differentiate it from the mudmaster.
Interesting point thanks Sean. I'm sure you are right and and sure the Rangeman will put up with any amount of mud also. I just know the button gaskets are protected on the Mudman with a complete rubber coating and therefore finding the 'sweet spot' for button pressing asnt quite as slick as the Rangeman.
You are correct, it also has mud-resist on the GW-9400.... makes sense with your last part of your comment :)
Sean Ishwar I clean my range my range after wearing each day ** see in you tube how to care of your g shock, if you have muddy and range man I would alternate of wearing but have a old model pro trek prg 240 for everyday use with beaten strap made use of original end piece added my diy paracord strap instead of buying new strap:)))
Sean Ishwar the GWF 1000 frogman looks good to ... that is wilthout the triple sensor...if you like water sports...the value of this watch does not go down ***not below 350.00 US dollars at ebay in very good condition original strap
@@WatchUP69MrRangeman I used to think so too, but i was wrong. It´s right that the GW 9400 was advertised as being mud resistant, but not in the entire watch, only in the sensor button. That´s why Casio took the information out. Not because of the release of the first Mudmaster, but because it made customers believe that the Rangeman had an entire mud resistant structure when it didn´t. If you watch (no pun intended) the first promotional videos on the Rangeman, you can clearly see that it is only mud resistant in one place. Only the sensor button has a metal tube and gaskets inside, the other buttons don´t, comparing it to other Casio mud resistant structures like the Mudmasters and the GPRB 1000. This doesn´t mean that you can´t take it to mud, but it will never be as resistant as a Mudman, a Mudmaster or a GPR B1000 Rangeman.
You're right ..
But i still loyal to my Mudman
Thank you for nice comparison
Once you own a Mudman you are always loyal to it because it is so loyal to you! It's such a great companion.
I know the rangeman is kinda a bit better but still prefer the mudman
@@stormrider1119 True that !
I loved my G 9000 mudman
Pocket Honey badger
Looking to get a king G
Mud resistance all the way
Funny, i have worn a rangeman to work for the last 5 years and destroyed it, just picked up the mudman to take over work duties and wish I had bought it instead. I find it more comfortable, lighter more aesthetically pleasing and ultimately more robust. I also got another rangeman which I will look after a bit better this time, also picked up a frogman 8235 which has become my favourite.
Yes the Mudman is such a no-nonsense watch and utterly indestructible whilst being very comfortable. I love it. How did you destroy the Rangeman if you don't mind me asking? Cheers for the comment!
@@stormrider1119 I am a self employed joiner, after destroying the original strap after a few years hard abuse I tried some jaysandkays adapters which led to the lugs snapping off the case. The screen was badly scratched and none of the sensors worked properly, wrecked a few different bezels along the way too. I think the big G's are not ideal on site as they get hit alot, at the same time they help protect the wrist, fancy a casio calculator watch for work.
@@bigg1779 yes sounds like it was time for a new one :) the calculator Casio is a cool bit of kit. Never had one but always seen the appeal.
If you want a very robust watch, also look into the GX56 King G shock
Its very very very tough, practically bomb proof and is also Mud resistant, has tough solar
It has the basic G shock features
Its main "feature" is its triple layered case, mud resistant buttons and seal, double mineral glass and Alpha gel shock absorber
( Its kinda indestructible)
Unofficially The Toughest G shock there is and the one watch that's even more rugged than a mudman
@@bigg1779 You are very correct about the size and the amount of damage a watch takes based on that factor alone. I have found the DW5600E to be the best watch for me. It is smaller, lighter, more comfortable, can withstand colder/hotter temperatures (the CR2016 batteries have a wider temperature operation range than the solar models), and best of all super easy to replace given the price (I've yet to have mine die).
I have the GWF-D1000, GWF-A1000, GF-8250, GW-9400, G-9300, GX-56, and many more Gs, but the DW5600 just works best for harsh work environments hands down. People claim the GX-56 is the "toughest G", but that just isn't true. That goes to the GWF-D1000. DLC case, sapphire crystal, special gaskets on all pushers, floating module, and more make this the true beast. But none of that matters anyways because no one is going to wear that ginormous watch like that at a job where tight clearances are an issue. So, I totally understand your choice with going Mudman.
Here are a number of my findings on the new Rangeman: czcams.com/play/PLSnumLQDnBpsOQM15pD7aycqORbVcXZ5_.html
Do you think the Rangeman is overall the better watch (slightly)?
Good question. Technically and based on functions avaliable it is a better watch with slightly more to offer. However there is a certain charm about the Mudman that I do love and makes me wear it more than the Rangeman at the moment. Both great though. It may just be because of an emotional attachment I have to the Mudman as I've had it for so long. I find it very comfortable and low key too. Hope that helps...
@@stormrider1119 thanks for the great reply! I agree, the Mudman is slightly more lowkey, which can make it more appealing based on the individual.
Technically, it is
But depends on what you value more
I value mudresistance and moonphase over radio signal ( cause it doesn't work where I live) and barometer
And its also cheaper
My Mudman is on the way and in future I also hope to get a rangeman.
Congratulations. The Mudman is the best place to start, it's a wonderful watch and will last forever :)
@@stormrider1119 Thanks. Got my Mudman, I already have a Gravitymaster GA-1000-1A with Digital Compass.
@@MK_ANIK two great choices of G-Shock. Congrats. Hope you ate lovong the Mudman
@@stormrider1119 I am loving my Mudman, even though I am not a construction worker, I am stationed at a construction yard where dust and mud are constant. And here Mudman comes in handy, easy to clean. The Gravity Master is my "POSH" watch along with my Edifice. I own 2 G-Shock, 1 Edifice, 2 Youth.
@@MK_ANIK that's a great collection you have. And the Mudman sounds like the perfect watch for your work environment, especially because if the buttons being extra protected from mud, dust or dirt seeping down the sides. Cheers!
Come on Casio we need an update to the 9400 with out all the bt yada yada yada ,,solar powered all by itself I saw a new Mudman GW8230NT. I would like a 9400 up date withe the moon phase and barometer with alarm on both visible with the time leave all the rest the same.
Some people say that Rangeman's lugs are easy to break. Have you experienced?
No it's never something I have experienced. I think someone would be having to do something pretty extreme to damage a Rangeman. Trust me I put mine through a lot and never had a single issue with any of my G-Shocks. Cheers
@@stormrider1119
Thank you man! Trust you. Now I have no doubt about Rangeman.
"Some people may find it shocking"
🥁
Once you try to put GW-9400 on your wrist, there is no way out..... First, Rangeman GW-9400 has super comfortable strap, no compare with the other series (equal & below price range)..... You will not believe me until you try it.... I also have a Casio Protrek PRW-3500 triple sensor (very cool watch with super legible dial) but it comes with more brittle strap not as comfortable as my Rangeman..... Second, still about the straps comfortable is without add wings underneath the straps to filling the gap, the lug is just fit on my wrist, 'cause it's annoying to have a couple wings..... Number 3, the size is just awesome. Yes it is big, chunky, thick, and enermous, but it is not too big, it doesn't look weird when worn by small-wristed guy..... Number 4, off course it is a goodlooking tactical face, with all practicality (big & easy access button), just perfect.... I wore my green Chris Hermsworth's "Extraction" Rangeman for almost 6 years as daily beater and counting without any single issue...
Aunur thanks so much for your comment and information good Sir! You have the Hemsworth Extraction model, what a classic! Great colour combination. I agree, the GW-9400 is the full package and just looks so cool. I don't doubt you never take it off. Cheers!
hello my new friend, connect to success!
just got my GW 9400 Rangeman **got bull bar protector....looks different
Interesting, don't think I've seen a Rangeman with bull bars. Will take a look on Google. Cheers
Some people say that Rangeman's lugs are easy to break. Have you experienced?
@@hapippt hello, its really depend on HOW you treat your watches, like casio Rangeman you see on the advertisement/commercials rough tough watches but in reality JUST don't overdo it on ALL watches, have a nice day:))
@@manuelsarabia1087
Ok bro! Thank you very much.
I have both models
Good stuff. Which one gets most wrist time?
@@stormrider1119 the rangeman, but I wore the mudman model up to last week and I switched to the my Mudman Rally!!
I am glad you like the watch, but I don't think this watch is very good for mud-resistance at all. I have one and it sucks for that. You have to clean it out every so often or it will begin to have issues. Check out "GW-9400 disassembly" and select g shock high fashion's video. Talk about filthy. Then, watch his "G-9300 disassembly" video. Night and day as there is not dirt in the case.
Interesting observation, I’ll check those videos. Thanks!
👏👏🍻
Mudman is still better watch 4 me...
Ranegman 💪😈
Indeed.
@W Jack haha. They are both great. Would be interested to see of everyone who owns both models, which one they wear the most. For me it's close but the Mudman just pips it because I use it in heavy workouts where it gets scratched up etc. Can't bare to see my beautiful blackout Rangeman scratched up. Cheers!
Man, you speak just like the ID Guy channel.
I dont know that channel, I'll check it out. Cheers!
I have both models exactly. I'm debating getting rid of the Mudman because I'll never use it now I have the Mudman. I will miss the moon graph but I could always just look up at night lol. I'd prefer sunrise/sunset anyways.
I know what you mean. I still use the Mudman when I'm doing something that is very hard on the surfaces like very physical workouts, mechanics etc. that would definitely knock the Rangeman about. I feel like the surface of the Rangeman is slightly more prone to scratching as the Mudman feels a bit more 'rubbery' if you know what I mean. Maybe I'm imaging it. Cheers...
@@stormrider1119 You're right. I feel like they both can take the same amount of damage but the Mudman will look prettier at the end of it.
(Nobody found it shocking)
Seems like you're feeling important! Sorry if famous but no idea who you are and it's expensive watch and prefer real smart watch or [Breitling] .
