CASIO G-SHOCK GW 9400 Rangeman gets a modification that even Batman would approve... but will CASIO?

  • I've been working on my GW-9400 Rangeman making it more versatile to my needs... one of the mods I've just found out that it has been done before, so sadly I'm not the first... but I still have a twist to my idea.
    There is two videos of showing a part of what I've done, but not enough details, so hopefully this video does it proud.
    I'm still in the prototype stage and want to better what I've done so far, so just flow with the video, and any opinions and advice is always welcome, even turds that say I talk like a robotic Clarkson LML :-P

    I sold my rangeman because I couldn't really see anything in the small circle LCD. And I've always been annoyed that it is very hard to do anything in the dark apart from checking the time. Fantastic mods! This brings up usability to a whole new level!

      Cheers buddy. It wasn't till I had the backing off the LCD glass that made me think what else could I use instead of a mirror backing... well my imagination took to doing something different, but later found it has been done before, but at least I found it on my own :) Makes a massive difference... but that sub-dial was the part that was bugging me the most... it's perfect now, and as you've seen it shows it all without doubt :)
      Cheers again :)

      It's risky to do as the glass is very thin, but as long as your mind careful you can do it. Have got a very strong lume on test at the moment, but in the meanwhile I've lost two of the tiny contact springs for the LED's! I might use another LED and solder paste it to the board?? I will be making a follow up video on this, as I'm still working with materials :)

    The luminous sheet is a great idea. Switching between pos/neg screen is cool, but I think Casio should produce more positive models. I don't understand why they don't give the option of switching between pos /neg in new models using LCD MIP.

      Hey buddy, just seen your comment!
      I've got some luminous paint coming which is said to be like superluminova :)) So if it's that good I'll do an update... I was thinking of the MIP too, but not sure if the common LCD will remain... the MIP is still relatively new, while the LCD has been around much longer and has proven itself.
      I have no idea with the options of negative and positive within the G-Shock series, they didn't think about it with the new MIP... Garmin have done it! CASIO, wake up and get inventive again like you did in the past... cheers :-P

      I can't believe that a few have already done the lume mod... but the removal of the lines on the glass is too me the winner... really nice to see the LCD marker/s now through the modes... since I first got the GW-9400 those lines in the sub-dial have been worrying me, as when I use the compass set bearing, it's not easy to read that single LCD line... I'm also surprised no one has mentioned this in the tutorials on the Rangeman in greater details... so am glad my video is being shared, as I'm getting a few comments saying they didn't know, and for some who've had the watch for a long time, must make it feel like a new watch :))

      The sub-dial is so useful, and with those tiny printed lines makes it really hard to see, and when on the Barometer you really don't notice the single LCD line... I watched a few videos, one being from G-Shock highfashion which helped the most... the module itself is very sturdy, the only part is the tiny contact springs for the LED lights.... but getting the polarised film off does take a steady hand for sure... it's more about time and not rushing anything. I enjoy things like this... but my main goal was to get rid of those fine printed lines on the sub-dial, as they just obscure the LCD lines... makes no sense what they did... Great mod - yes I've seen many do it with luminous tape but like you said, most offering aren't super bright and they fade quickly. The day someone manufactures C3 lume sheets I'll definitely be modding one of my squares to do this. Cheers for the feedback my friend... I have a watch that I will review in more depth with regards to a fully lumed dial, but for a digital there isn't a lumed productive digital that really works. I'm looking at luminous paint, just talking to a company that makes it telling them what I need... it does need more brightness and longer lasting, then I wouldn't bother with the back light... maybe use it as a torch instead :))
      The lines on the glass made no sense, talking the ones in the sub-dial... you have a useful dial then make it hard to read by adding those lines???
      Way way better now, and it's more like my Frogman with the focus on the LCD than over printing the glass.

I have the same watch and until now, didn't notice how "busy" the screen layout is (perhaps my mind didn't want to register this observation due to the fact of inefficient data/knowledge that you have of this technology) until you pointed it out and showed how much readable it is, without the "fuss" -- noise; unnecessary printed witness lines, etc. Casio should hire you before marketing new watches. I'm a practical guy and if something can be improved, not talking just for cosmetics then I'm very much into the detailing. For me the 'Noise' reduced screen with lume has changed the watch... adjustments made in the dark takes a few moments with a flashlight, so I don't need full room illumination... practical is the key here... more lume and longer lasting is my next... and looking at the backlight... maybe use RED SMT LED's :)))

The chap would whip out a UV light to make the H3 tritium really pop but as soon as the UV was turned off the tritium didn't half dim, or maybe that's just how it looked on the TV. I thought that if you had a solar powered watch then getting daily sunlight should charge up a secondary small battery just for the purpose of using a UV light placed at either side just for brightening the tritium and or lume. Just a 5sec blast from my pocket torch and it's enough to get you though setting s few mods. Just needs a little more strength to last longer in the night. It does feel odd adjusting the alarm with that lume glowing, much like my TIMEX that continues to glow when pressing buttons... the lume feels like the backlight, the camera isn't showing the full brightness, so wasn't the easiest to film.

      However, I've seen a couple of reviews here on youtube, and there was this kid that had used it for around 5 yrs or more, the problem was that the plastic case body was deteriorating, which gives another problem to longevity, because I haven't seen any spare parts for it (unlike Casio's that have Bezels being sold around the internet), so unless there are spare parts being sold, or you might probably have the need to ship it back to Timex for a fix (that's hard for us in 3rd world countries, Philippines here, since its costly just with the shipping)

    In so impressed that’s a game changer right there! I’m being serious when I say this now but have you thought about copyrighting this luminous idea?
    Just for an update on my mudmaster GWG -1000 -1a3 , I’ve purchased an original black band and changed it for the olive green one that it comes with as standard. I love my gwg 1000 i wear it nearly every day I love it. 2 issues I have though.. the altimeter is poor, reset it and by the best day it’s out by a good hundred feet. Also the temp is only accurate if it’s left off your wrist. Those are my only 2 cons.

      @WatchUP69MrRangeman  Před 3 lety +1

      One thing to know about the Altimeter, it shares the same sensor as the Barometer, but unlike the Barometer where this displays air pressure, the Altimeter will be effected even by weather, so will need calibration each time, it's just how the Altimeter's are, there's nothing wrong with it :))
      The GPR-B1000 can use the GPS, so gets the more accurate readings, as it's using geo location and not air pressure... so if you're wanting more accuracy, then air pressure is only good when the weather is stable the most.
      Temp sensor will read your body heat, there isn't a sensor that won't... unless in water, so will need to be removed of the wrist, this goes for all watches with temps, even my Garmin's have to be removed off the wrist and left to settle for 20-30mins.
      Hope that helps :)

    Hello Mr. Rangeman I am thinking of buying a GW-9400, was in love with the negative display, however I saw on the Internet that it isn't really visible in the Dark. So I went back to to positive when I saw your video. I really like what you did with the subtiel, did you make a how-to-do-that-video? Since I saw your other video about the black-out watch, I am thinking of a negative display again. How is the visibility of the subdial in the negative without the (black)Light?

      @WatchUP69MrRangeman  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey buddy,
      In all honesty, the blackout GW-9400 is more show than being functional... the display is dark, and you would need the backlight to view, even when in doors during the day... but for looks it's very stealthy.... for me, if you are using it as intended, then you'll find the dark negative display frustrating... so stick with a positive. There isn't many negative displays I could say are good, only the GPR and similar that share the MIP display, otherwise they're a struggle in low lighting ;-P
      Hope that helps my friend ;)

      @@WatchUP69MrRangeman Hmmm...now I am back on the positive display! Or maybe one of the special Colorado, the blue (eg GW-9404KJ-3) or
      the double Color ( eg GW-9401KJ-3JR).
      Thanks!
      One more question: did you make a video of removing the links of the subdial? Is it hard? I am very clumpsy, not sure if I should try once I got one.

    • @WatchUP69MrRangeman
      @WatchUP69MrRangeman  Před 2 lety

      @@mennoderoos1283 Removing the lines from the sub-dial is quite time consuming, as you'll need to remove the polorized film on the back of the LCD display, and the LCD glass is fine, and if you break it, you won't find a replacement, unless using a donor watch. Maybe someone from the G-Shock Collectors Worldwide could help, but haven't seen another modded the same way, and that's probably down the the side, that it's a huge risk.
      I don't know why CASIO don't have it like the sub-dial used on the GWF-D1000, as that has no lines, and works beautifully.
      Noticed that prices on the GW-9400 are going up, even with the olive green negative display version.

    Do you have a solution to the broken lugs that seem to happen on these

    great hack my friend from over the pond all you need now is the NATO band hack i did that to my watches years ago when they first came out. i want to know is it easy to make a - version of this watch to a + 1 ?

    • @WatchUP69MrRangeman
      @WatchUP69MrRangeman  Před 2 lety

      Well you hear stories of lugs breaking on these GW-9400's, what they don't say is that the strap is part of the strength, and using adaptors it's taking that away, so when they break, they go running off to try and get CASIO to help... but CASIO know... but if you're using them lightly, then a NATO would be ok.... now to make this happen is quite tricky, my issue now, is that my backlight isn't working down to losing two tiny tiny contact springs, and these are very fine, and CASIO don't do parts! The glow is nice, but not for the whole night through, probably good for two hours, but having a backlight would make it perfect perfect :)
      Removing the lines is the hardest part, not seen anyone do this, and a good reason, it's a 50/50 to breaking the LCD panel, as you need to remove the back filter as well, and now the glass is more exposed to breaking when removing the lines. It's a risk my friend, but if you want to add lume only, then this is easier... just don't lose those LED springs, they are so small :-P

      My friend... I put a lot of time in mine, mainly because I've never done anything like it... now there are a few good modders on the G-Shock Collectors WORLDWIDE group on Facebook, so why not share this video on there with your question and see if anyone could help you.
      Doing it yourself is a risk, I lost two springs for the LED backlighting, and I can't find replacements, and so I only have the lume... but would be nice to have the backlighting when the lume is empty.
      Maybe a colour change on the LCD, there's plenty I've seen that look really cool.
      Maybe ask for modded GW-9400's, and get ideas there... but getting a price to how much is better from someone who does it more day to day.
      Hope that helps, and you don't have to share this video, that was me being cheeky as always LML :-P

      Hey buddy... I tried to explain at the beginning, but it's something that couldn't be filmed as I was in too many minds how it should go... removing the polarising film would've been a pain to film, just don't have such a setup, as I don't do this close type of mods. I have ideas of making the lume better, so might film that instead, so you can really see inside. This video was more about the outcome so far... just needs a stronger lasting lume. So stay tuned for the followup video, and I will try my upper most to film inside :)
      Cheers!

      @@ejay1945 There's loads of modders on G-Shock Collectors WORLDWIDE that may help you on a more professional level, I'm not doing this daily.
      My plan was just to remove the print on the sub-dial, but decided that what is the point of the rest... the grey around the date, is in fact loads of tiny dots that makes it look grey. I must add that it does remove that toy like now... I'm thinking to remove some of the print on the dial like
      Multi Band 6
      Water 20 BAR Resist
      Split/Reset
      Set
      Select
      Start/Forward
      Sensor
      RC Indicator
      Leaving RANGEMAN and CASIO
      What would that look like?
      I don't know how the solar panel fits to the crystal, as this could be glued?
      I have another bezel from the Black Panther to really blacken it up giving it more stealth, but sometimes too much print isn't needed, as once you've learnt the buttons it's not needed again.
      I don't like having AUTOMATIC on dials either, makes it sound like a washing Machine LML :-P
      Cheers for your feedback my friend
      Grüß aus UK :)
