- This episode of the Good Timekeeping Show is a quick review of the Casio G-Shock "Rangeman" GW-9400 watch which uses Module 3410. These set-up instructions also apply to other versions of the GW-9400, such as the GW-9400-3, GW-9400J-1JF, GW-9400BJ, GW-9400BTJ-8JR, GW-9404KJ-3JR and more which use the same module.

These watches each have Casio's Tough Solar power supply to keep the batteries charged automatically with normal exposure to normal lighting conditions during daylight hours. They have Multi Band 6 atomic time reception to automatically keep them set to the correct time every day. They have Casio's Triple Sensor, which includes a compass, a thermometer and a barometer. The barometer is used both to show barometric pressure readings and to calculate altitude measurements. The Triple Sensor readings can be displayed in metric or non-metric values (meters/feet, C/F, etc.). The user can also use this watch to record altitude readings for later review or to track altitude changes while climbing and hiking.
These watches also feature five daily alarms (one of which is a snooze alarm), an hourly chime, a one thousand-hour stopwatch, a countdown timer (up to 24 hours) and a World Time mode to display the time in another time zone anywhere in the world. This will also calculate sunrise and sunset times for the current time zone with the ability to enter latitude and longitude coordinates for more accurate calculations.

Good review Greg. I use my Rangeman as my travel watch. Its got everything you could need on the road and bombproof to boot. I travel light so I only take one watch and the Rangeman is it.
By far this is still one of my favorite Gshocks
Good.choice. Yes, it is my only G-Shock and I love it too. I think about getting other ones, very tempted, but think this is all I'll need.

I have all your Casio watch, in debt, reviews saved so I can refresh my memory of their features. You have the most detailed reviews out there. I made a few quick videos on them but I always link your videos, for people to get the most info about these awesome watches. And I even say it in the videos, to check out your videos for a complete tutorial and review.
Just used your full review last night. Still getting familiar with everything this watch will do. It received atomic time last night on the first try.
Too funny. I've been watching various GW-9400 videos over the last couple of days (yours included, of course!), wondering if I should pick one up. I log-on this morning, and here you are with a new video, showing the two colors I'm considering! I just don't know if I can pull-off a watch this big (7" wrist.) I've got about a dozen Casio squares (including the new gold Corn Flakes), and probably gonna add a DW-H5600 to the collection when they release later this month.
Update: I've now purchased FOUR Rangeman watches, and love them. They're large on my 7" wrist, but doable, and somehow, very comfortable. (to wife: "Honey, it's all Greg's fault!")
On some people's wrists it looks like it's so big they can't even bend their wrists all the way because the watch is so big. Cool watch though.
It's definitely a big guy's watch.
They need a baby Rangeman for the smaller-wristed folks.
Awesome review greg ! Could I humbly request a review on the gw9300? I have looked and looked all over for a thorough tutorial on how the compass and thermometer work, even the manual is kind of complicated to understand. Thank you ! Love your reviews
That yellow does look sharp. If the OG one had extra red highlights where the yellow one does it'd look alllot better IMO too.
Hello, I really enjoy your channel. I find that all of your reviews are spot on I recently within the last week purchased the Japanese version of the rangemen the red and black one with the black carbon fiber band. I find it to be very comfortable to wear a very easy to use, would it be possible for you to do a review comparison between the Mudman the range man and the frog man I find that it might be interesting to see what similar features they have and what the differences are in the master of G watch line. Thank you again.
It seems to me that the Japanese keeps the nicest G-Shocks for themselves.

Is it just me or does the contrast of the digits look better on the yellow model? Is the module closer to the glass?

This is a great video. I recently bought the watch, it was on sale for about 170 euro. It's a big watch but I like the functions. Very similar with my older riseman, and the 9300 mud an. The rangeman is triple sensor, compared to the other two. I was searching for the GPR-B1000 rangeman but I think it is discontinued,not available anymore, maybe used. So I ended up with the GW-9400. I like it and overall it is a good watch for the price.
Where did you find it at such a low price?

Nice colour combo, but casio needs to make the carbon fiber strap option more avalable here in Canada.
Don't forget the setting for rapid barometer pressure change, I believe it beeps. Handy for tornado prone locations.
Wouldn't it be nice if it had a format to have the date in UK style.
@@bradcarpo5917 When I bought a watch about a week ago, I was also a little disappointed that you couldn't change the date to DD/MM and had to live with the MM/DD.
But what can I say, after just a week I had already gotten used to the fact that the date is displayed differently than usual (here Germany).
I've even switched everything on my other watches to MM/DD because I don't want to get confused when changing a watch because some have DD/MM and others (where you can't change) have MM/DD.
So I can ignore this restriction completely in the future because I'll just continue to use MM/DD.
And even in my daily work on the PC (where I work a lot with files and the modification date), there are no problems because my brain (at least mine ;) ) seems to be good at distinguishing between the time/date of the clock and the time/date of files can differentiate.
TL;DR: It's not as bad as I thought and as a European you quickly get used to it.
Since its rumored Casio is discontinuing this version of the Rangeman are they going to re-release it using their new bio plastic or are they turfing it due to brand confusion with the smart model? Frankly I wish Casio didn't bother with bio plastic (who is throwing away +$200 solar watches so often that they are a landfill issue?) but focused on more sustainable packaging. The packaging with the Bamboo? boxes and cheap cloth bags they use on the protrek line should be used on the entire non cardboard box casio line instead of metal tins an plastic.
If I want to save the watch boxes the protrek wood boxes are perfectly fine (although some higher end protreks come in very nice dark green vynal? faux leather boxes) and so are the cloth bags. Theres no need for all that plastic, foam and metal tins.
If there was one thing I wish casio did add to their watch boxes it would be a couple of gurilla glass screen protectors for the mineral glass watches. IMO it would probably be cheaper to use saphire on everything (its surprising how cheap replacement saphire crystals are on ebay so that line they give us about saphire being too expensive for lower end watches feels like a shit ton of BS. Maybe 20 or 30 years ago this was true but it doesn't seem like it today given how many affordable micro brands offer saphire on their watches.

Is there additional duties or fees on the Japanese watches shipped to USA?
So far I have never paid any additional fees for the watches I’ve purchased from vendors in Japan. I have purchased several watches from eBay sellers in Japan and some were purchased through Amazon but shipped from Japan. I wonder if I would be required to pay those fees if the watches were most costly, but I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than $450 for any particular watch… if that makes a difference.

Sometimes the letters at the very end of the model name are just an indication of where they are selling a particular watch, but the watch itself is no different from the model which is meant to be sold in another area of the world. Your Rangeman is still in good condition?. I have bought a month ago, happy but affried about the lug braking issues. I m not doing any hard core work by wearing this , could just put on & off creating enough pressure on the lugs so that could break. Please share your thoughts 🙏 & by the way learnt the features of the Rangeman from your video, 👍👍.
Have a mudmaster 2000….wear it from splitting wood to boating salt and fresh water to concrete work. Simply if it says G Shock no worries

The date display is different on the yellow one.
I can't see any differences. But you make me curious, what do you mean exactly?
@@knusperzwieback7697 I checked it out in the store also. Look at the lower of the two small display segmention. Where the date is. The original is darker there. Not the numbers but the background.
Different color, different price? Weird. Oh well. Black model for me please. 😊
It appears that Casio's suggested retail price is usually the same for watches which are the same model except for color variations. But they can be priced higher is they're using different materials and/or if it's a limited edition or a collaboration or something like that. But then the people who are actually selling the watches will offer certain discounts on the "less popular" colors.
does the atomic function work if you're in south america? Or far from the 6 "spots" where these signals occur
The folks in charge of WWVB don’t think it’ll work in South America. I wonder if, under the right atmospheric conditions, it might work on rare occasion. But I suppose we shouldn’t expect that.
If you have a smartphone, you can simply search for "Atomic Clock Sync" in the smartphone's respective store for multiband 6 (MB6)/radio.
This app then simulates a radio tone and sets the clock correctly - IMHO very useful if you live outside of the radio masts.
I really want this watch just for the Barometer which i think is just really freakin neato. As i live in Tennessee and we have thunderstorms every other day. But i'm moving across the country to a desert climate soon and i feel like the Barometer feature would be pretty boring over there. Or maybe im misunderstanding how a barometer works with weather? I dunno.
If i ever receive a bonus or win a few hundred bucks I think i'll buy one just to know what it's like. But i'm probably not gonna save up for this one. I could buy some more cool square models for that money.
Cannot recommend a Casio barometer enough -- made a huge difference for me with migraines from massive pressure changes coming across the prairie. Also incredibly useful for gauging incoming storms in the mountains. Pro Trek series is what I use primarily. It's an incredible tool.
If they bring the MIP display and Bluetooth to this model that would be amazing.
MIP is really nice, BUT I returned my Casio GBD-200. The screen was quite clear, but IMHO it still doesn't come close to the classic LCD display when the environment limits the light. I always had to move my wrist back and forth a bit to really see the time clearly. I've never had this "problem" with my positive watches.
Although I have to say that I'm a little older and my eyes are no longer as good as they were when I was 18. ;) Others don't seem to have a problem even with the old negative displays.
I would therefore recommend that anyone interested take a look at a watch like this in a local store - it always looks much better on videos and pictures online than in reality. /not meant in a bad way, just as a tip. :-)
But I agree with you, there are many nice models that I can't buy because they only offer the old negative display - and I often like the housing color so much better than the positive display. If it were MIP, I would have definitely bought one or two watches. It's strange that Casio still continues to bring watches (including newer models) onto the market with the old negative display. This is probably only a problem if you are in the “watch bubble”. ;-)
