This is the most phenomenal video, and effort from the community to make an aftermarket system work, other than one cheaper Chinese option that has almost no supporter reviews, there are no solutions for 2010 to 2013 models, and the fact that you all have made this work for that generation, is amazing! Not to mention, probably the best instructional video on CZcams bar none in this category, thank you so much! Will be buying very shortly
It’s comments like these that truly put a huge smile on our faces. That’s our goal … we’re trying to create quality bundles and provide content to make the installation process easy. It means so much to us that you appreciate it! 🙌
Your videos are so helpful. Installing your radio bundle is very straight forward. I could have figured it all out myself all the components and wires and such, but I don’t have time to do that, so the plug and play, and instructions are awesome! Love the nerds in the manuals package, because we are. Took me about an hour and a half to install. (It was a bit interrupted by my kids) 🤘🏼
Thank you for your super kind words! We are super pumped you're happy!!
Fantastic video and Sony bundle - just completed the full install (including factory mic swap) in my 2016 4Runner Limited (with JBL) this past weekend. I have not done this type of install before, so took my time as I learned how the vehicle interior is built/snapped together. It was 4 hours start to finish - but I could do it far faster now that I understand how these things are done.
Great upgrade and sounds awesome too. Using it for the Carplay function primarily.
Thank you for your awesome feedback, David! We’re so pumped to hear you’re happy with your new Sony 8100 bundle! We appreciate you very much!!
I am gonna pull the trigger and get mine
Ordered!!.
So happy to update my 2018 head unit.
Thank you!! So sorry we missed this comment!!
I installed the 8100 yesterday in my 2016 Tacoma TRD Off Road…and it went in super easy. I followed the instructions in the video, and installed the microphone per your instructions. The only thing I did differently was, I used a couple dabs of hot glue where the mic sits in the “mic mount” and it seems to be held in place very well. With apple car play in my truck now is like night and day! Based on how easy it was to put in with all the pre-wiring you guys do on your end, made it a no brainer. Everything works as it should and the sound quality is amazing for me. With all the other abilities the 8100 has that I had been missing out on, I only wish I had done this a couple years ago! All these new features are amazing… Fire stick next with the HDMI? It really was as easy to install as you did it in the video! Thanks for all your help and support on this seamless install!
Woohoo! We're so pumped you're happy with your new Sony 8100 bundle and great job on the installation!! We appreciate ya!
Cant wait to install this setup almost went for the Halo 11 but this seems to be more for less.
Can’t wait for you to install it as well! Please let us know if there’s anything we can do for you ahead of your install! We appreciate ya!
I bought this unit and kit from TGP and installed it recently. The system works as very well for aftermarket . The kit works perfectly, and I give the radio an 8.5/10. It's perfect except for the Bluetooth transfer between earbuds, and the car is not always perfect. The sound is clear and has no issue with the JBL system from Toyota. One note is that all the plugs for the harness are not used, so don't think you missed something on the installation when you have four unused plugs.
Thanks for your feedback! We appreciate you!
Just ordered one for my 2017 SR5!
Woohoo! We appreciate ya very much!!
@@TrailGridPro Quick question i've got a kicker subwoofer installed into the stock head unit right now will this new unit transfer right over or will i have to re-wire it?
hey man how did you like it? I have same exact car as you
@@XxAlex530xX Works great. Sometimes the carplay will disconnect. I got the Apple USB to lightning cord and it still happens. Updated firmware to 1.31 today hopefully that fixes the carplay disconnection issue. Phone is a 13 Pro
Awesome video, I may have missed it in the video but will I be able to retain the functionality from the factory microphone or will I have to use the supplied microphone?
2019 4Runner TRD Pro
Great question! Yes, you will have to use the Sony microphone provided with our bundle.
Would this head unit work with the front anytime camera installed ?
Yes it does!
Just ordered mine!!
Woohoo!! Thank you!!! 🙌🙌
@@TrailGridPro just received it and it’s in three pieces due to the new dash kit. Hopefully it goes as smoothly as this video. Fingers crossed.
@@Bril_cream_21 Yep, we’ve had about 30 installs in the field with the new dash kit and they’ve all gone silky smooth if you follow the directions from our “Installation Tips” email. Let us know if you need any assistance but you got this!! 🙌 The updated install vid will be out soon but it’s actually a bit easier to install with the new version because you don’t have to hold the entire bundle while making all the connections.
@@TrailGridPro everything did go together seamlessly, only complaint I have is that the dash kit, only at the top, is loose. I used the supplied yellow clips and the factory clips and the top is still loose. Awesome product, very easy install and a MASSIVE improvement over stock. Thank you again.
@@Bril_cream_21 So glad install was a breeze for ya! We really appreciate your kind remarks. Regarding the top of the dash kit, we’ve heard that a couple times and our recommendation is to use a small amount of weatherstripping material (or foam) along the small hidden edge of the dash kit that will allow it to pressure fit into place better. Let us know if that helps.
Can you install apps like torque? Would be nice to see tire pressure something not available on the 2013.
If torque is an Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatible app, then yes you can. Sorry, we haven't tested it yet.
Do you have instructions that would relocate a backup camera from the rear view mirror to this unit? I have a 2010 T4R Trail Edition
We don’t at this time! It’s a tricky job but it can be done.
My wife is looking for something like this for her 4Runner limited nightshade edition. Would the shinny black surround match the rest of her. factory is shinny black with almost looks like it has silver sparkles in it
Yep, that's the Charcoal version!
For the older models that have the USB port in the glove compartment, can you still make use of it with this new unit?
Unfortunately our kit does not retain the glove box USB.
Just ordered to replace a disata unit in my 16 Can you add a wireless CarPlay dongle to this unit?
Woohoo! Thanks! Yes, you can. You can use the CPLAY2Air flawlessly.
I just installed this kit in a 2019 in about 70 minutes, thanks to the video. One issue though, android auto doesn't seem to work. When I connect a phone, it starts charging, then disconnects. Then connects and starts charging. Then disconnects. On and on, forever. Any pointers you guys could suggest so I can get this working before tomorrow's road trip? Thanks!
Check and make sure you're using a factory Android cable just like the one that came with your phone. Aftermarket cables won't work.
curious to know if this display would show tire pressure data if TPMS is onboard?
Great question! Our kit does not show TPMS.
I just ordered this unit from you guys for my 2016 Toyota Tacoma… Question that I have is what is the workaround for GPS navigation while you’re in the back country with no cell phone service? I’m up in the eastern sierras and out in death Valley quite a bit… And typically there is no cell service out there. How does navigation work without cellular reception? Or is there a way to add navigation without cellular service to this system?
Great question! So, while you can certainly download maps in advance of entering poor cellular reception areas, I’d suggest grabbing a secondary GPS unit if you spend a lot of time outside of cell reception areas just in case. You can grab them fairly cheap these days!
@@TrailGridPro Thanks guys! I bought a cheapish Garmin and have it tucked away in its case behind my back seats. It was fairly inexpensive, and I think it will be money well spent for an easy work around when there is no cell reception. Thanks again!
@@JonnyBuzzkill awesome! Do you like it? Link it here - I’m interested to check it out!
What if you want to keep that cigarette lighter for say your radar detector, but want the usb as well🤔 then on some that have a party mode does that still work.
We changed the USB piece on these kits to create a factory looking USB port using the switch blanks on your dash, so this kit no longer replaces the cigarette lighter!
@@TrailGridPro good to know👍🏼 I'm definitely leaning towards this one.
Will there be one available soon for a 21? And does it have wireless apple carplay?
It works for 2019 and down currently. We are working on a solution for 2020+ and hope to have it ready soon!
I get my license in July and I plan to order and install this the day i get my 2011 4Runner. Is there anything I need to buy myself to make this work? Great video btw
Awesome!! Nothing else you'll need to buy! Just this!
Are you able to keep your navigation functions when not connected with apple CarPlay?
Thanks for your question! Our bundle does not maintain native navigation, instead you gain access to Apple Maps, Waze and Google Maps via Apple CarPlay.
I bought the 8100 from you guys for my 2016 Toyota Tacoma, but did not think I wanted the XM radio as I have not used it on the factory head unit... and you know where this is going I'm sure. So when I ordered the 8100 I didn't opt for keeping the XM. So with that said... and I'm sorry for the three part question here. Can I add the XM later, do I need to add an external antenna or can I use the factory antenna, or can I just use my phone with an XM subscription with the 8100? Thanks in advance!
Yep, you can add XM at anytime. All you’ll need is the SXV300V1 and the idatalink STO2 in order to maintain your factory satellite connection.
Does the unit have a built in mic? Is it necessary to use the external mic?
Yep, our bundle comes with a new Sony mic and you can use our mic mount to secure it to the factory mic location: czcams.com/video/ibTHvel8rwk/video.html
Do you find that the bracketing and whatnot supporting the pushed out screen is noticeable/unsightly? Is there any flashing or anything provided that covers up the rear of the screen that protrudes out? Just curious. My 2019 Limited with JBL system just decided to stop booting up and the smart USB port is no longer working. I feel these are caused by the same issue but have not resolved it yet. Once I do, I may get a whole new head unit and I like this product of yours. I'm also curious if there are many complaints about blocked airflow from the 2 vents above the screen. Any input is welcome! Thanks!
Thanks for your questions! The back of the radio has covers on the rear of the screen and the neck of the radio. We haven’t received any returned bundles due to blocked vent airflow.
my 4runner don't have backup camera but plan to add in the future, so if I get the one without backup Cam. Would I be able wire able to do myself down the road?
Absolutely, all of our Sony bundle kits easily accept any aftermarket backup camera system.
I have a 2011 with the basic single din radio. Do I need to purchase any extras?
Nope! Our kit comes with everything needed for installation!
If I have a Beat Sonic interface would it still work with this unit
We've never tested it so we're unsure. Sorry!
Would you recommend updating the firmware to 1.31 (current version is 1.30), if having stability issues? BTW love the unit so far!
Yep, absolutely! What connectivity issues are you referring to?
@@TrailGridPro Android auto. If on Google maps while listening to Pandora, after about 5-10 mins I'll get the unit to freeze up. Then I'll have to hold down the home button of the Sony unit or disconnect the phone for the freeze to go away. Phone works great on other cars.
@@kylelkennedy Ah, are you using a factory cable just like the one that came with your phone? Aftermarket cables from Amazon or the grocery never work well.
@@TrailGridPro that's a good idea. I'll give it a try and let you know. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@kylelkennedy You got it!
Does the Cold air or heat coming out of the vents damage the screen?
Nope, not at all!
When you on apple play and someone call the steering wheel control to pick the call work? On my 2018 Tacoma doesn’t work and is Bluetooth only hangup bottom work pick up don’t work 🤷♂️
Thanks for your question! Yes, when in Apple CarPlay your answer on button should work to answer a call.
@@TrailGridPro mine don’t work no answer or hangup button
@@canalesivany Okay, we have an easy solution for that. Send us a quick contact form about the answer on/off issue and we’ll respond with the steps to fix it: trailgridpro.com/contact/
Is there a head unit for a 2020 trd off road 4runner?
Great question! We’re working on one as we speak! We hope to have it ready by mid-summer! Stay tuned!
the option to had USB where the cigarette lighter goes comes with the kit or is it separate? Also, when choosing "USB in glove box" on the website, does that make it so that the USB kit USBDMA6 comes with it? 2011 4runner SR5 here!
Yep, we include the USB conversion kit with every order when the option for "USB in the glove box" is chosen.
Is there a return policy if it doesn’t work? I’m also looking at the ax7000 one as well
Howdy. Looking to buy the 8100 and the front and back camera you offer. Do they work together?
We are currently working through the solution to allow them to work together and should have it solved in about a week!
@@TrailGridPro Any update on this?
@@alexanderbelluccia599 Yep, we have the solution done and they work together!!
@@TrailGridPro for the 2010?
Is there an RC cable plug-in so I could hook up an amp?
Yep, there's RCA outputs!
I bought the anytime front camera. Would it still work?
Yep, it absolutely is compatible!
Why is there nowhere that explains the whole part of the video before this begins, assembling the bundle?? I have the exterior trim piece, screen, and harness thing in 3 pieces and no instructions on how to get them into one piece (where all the videos start)
We emailed you a complete install guide when your bundle shipped. Check your email - it will answer all your questions! Thanks!
Is there a USB-C/fast charging front-facing USB option?
Great question! Our kits now include an adapter to create a front-facing USB-A but we haven't found one for USB-C.
Is this only a wired connection? No Bluetooth?
The head unit has traditional bluetooth but if you want to launch Apple CarPlay /Android Auto you will need to be plugged in.
Ok I may have spoke too soon, you made 2 separate videos showing install but totally leave out how to mount actual unit to trim in which order etc. the video leaves out a lot.
Thanks so much for your kind words!! Make sure to check out the “Sony Installation Tips” email we sent as it describes the changes to the install process due to Metra’s upgraded new 5th Gen 4RUNNER dash kit! 🙌 Let us know if you have any questions - we’re here for ya!
Hey there! The video was made prior to Metra changing their dash kit which is why we supplement the video with new instructions which were emailed to you. We also reached out to ya by phone right after you purchased and left a message with this information. You can find them here: trailgridpro.com/blog/audio/2014-4runner-sony-8100-installation-guide/
We just tried to call you again. Reached voicemail again. If you follow the install guide you can’t go wrong: trailgridpro.com/blog/audio/2014-4runner-sony-8100-installation-guide/
Do the admin functions still work?
Thanks for your great question! The admin functions will not be retained with our kit.
Can this do wireless carplay?
The 8100 only has wired CarPlay. We have other bundles with wireless CarPlay: trailgridpro.com/pages/toyota-4runner-accessories
Help me understand, please. So the phone must be plugged into the USB at all times in order for music to play?
Can you disable the beeps?
Yep, you sure can!
How easy is to remove the screen?
The screen is held on to the neck of the body by 5 small screws.
Will it work for 2020-2022?
Not at this time! We’re working on a 2020+ bundle as we speak!
In the middle of installing this - these directions are clear in some places but there are no close ups inside the car of the wires or of anything you’re doing. Really not great for someone trying to do the install without having done it before.
Totally understand! When you order form us, we provide specific instructions to follow for your specific install. We do our best to take any guessing out of the install!
How has this held up for the past few months?
It’s performing very well! Check out the reviews on the product page from our customers: trailgridpro.com/shop/head-units/sony-xav-ax8100-4runner/
@@TrailGridPro I will be buying one soon thank you!
