Installed this unit a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. TGP does a fantastic job in making it plug & play. I did, however, have a few issues that I thought would be worth sharing. I initially couldn’t get the hazards working and ended up sending an email to TGP support. Never got a response. It wasn’t until I started surfing through the comments on this video that I found a few other folks had mentioned the same issue almost a year ago. What compounded my problem was that the hazard harness somehow got dislodged from the old head unit when I removed it and ended up under a storage bin on my garage floor. So once I figured out there was a harness I needed to use as an intermediary connection it took me a few days to track it down. I did finally got a response from TGP 8 days later but the response mentioned nothing about the hazard light issue I had asked them about. If this has been a known issue for almost a year then I would have at least expected some kind of mention in the install instructions. Would have saved me a headache and a few days. Last thing, I also purchased the front camera add on. Picture quality is very grainy. Just something to consider if you’re thinking of dropping an additional $50.
Same with my 2019. I noticed the strangely fastened interface cable for the hazards on the original head but, wrongly assumed that the female receptacle on the new head would fit. It doesn't. You have to remove that securely fastened interface cable and transfer it to the new head. That is not on the video. A quick edit to add this step should be performed. Other than that snafu, what a great video. So much better than written instructions!
I'm sorry to hear you had difficulties with your install! Our support team is usually very quick to respond and very knowledgeable with our products, I'm sorry we missed the mark on that one! We try to make our videos as detailed as possible, but we are human!
In regards to the camera quality - this is an issue that Sony is aware of and they are working to improve this via future firmware updates.
@trailgridpro do you know if the issue of it being grainy with the front camera add on for the 8500 still exists?
@@michaelfoley1296 the camera quality isn’t improved by swapping the head unit. Essentially all that happens is the original camera display pixels are just enlarged with the larger screen, which is why it can appear grainy. It’s actually the same quality picture as on the smaller OEM screen, just enlarged. So, the pixels display larger which causes the confusion that the picture is deteriorated. The picture is actually the exact same, just larger. Hopefully that helps and makes sense!
Great video, excellent explanation and views of the process. Really appreciate it!
Absolutely! Super happy you found it helpful! Thanks for watching!
@@TrailGridPro Is the Sony 9500 compatible with a 21 Lexus gx 460? Want to upgrade my outdated factory setup
This looks like the best after market head unit for the 4Runner I’ve seen.
It is a great one for sure!! You're 100% correct!
Dasaita makes a nice one and looks oem.
Outstanding!! I see, in my semi-opaque crystal ball, a purchase coming in Spring 2023...
Oh my goodness, we can see it as well!
@@TrailGridPro LOL 😂
Eagerly waiting for this and my kicker speaker bundle!
Woohoo! How'd it go??
@Trail Grid Pro loving it so far! Waiting for a free weekend to install the kicker speaker system! 👍👍
Bro just responded to another one about this and I want this one for sure!!
It's sweet!! Don't blame ya!
just ordered mine!
Woohoo! Thanks so much, Andrew!
my install is almost done, getting close! (i work slow. very.very.very slow lmao) most of the tough work is done, routing mic and new front/trail cam wires. i think it's nap time before i finish putting it all back together. so close!
Woohoo! Hope the rest goes well!!
For screen position...is there any movement for it to be pushed further back to be a bit more flush with the trim? The gap between the trim and the screen seems kind of excessive and makes it scream aftermarket. If you could push it in a bit, at first glance (to a thief), it could look oem.
Good question! We adjust the screen inward as much as possible.
Installed mine today and it went pretty smoothly just following the video. On my 2019, the cable from the hazard flashers connected into another cable that was rigged up on the side of the original head unit. Took me a while to figure out that I needed to remove that and use it as a patch cable. Other than that, it went great.
Thanks did the call out about hazard button. Has the exact same issue with my 2018 and could not figure it out.
Yes, you're 100% right! In the video we missed that step because we have removed my head unit so many times. A total oversight - our complete apologies!!
Yep you sure can!
So sorry about that! We definitely forgot to mention it in the video!!
To get the info on the gauges and vehicle info screens, do you need to install an accessory like a Maestro unit or is the XAV-9500 ES natively about to access that info from the 4Runner??
Our bundles come with the Maestro module and we flash it to your vehicle for you!
Great video! Just out of curiosity: Why couldn't you use the factory microphone?
Great question! Your factory microphone wiring will have nowhere to connect to an aftermarket head unit.
What aftermarket cameras work with this? The stock camera looks like it still gives low resolution on this. Does this need maestro? I didn't see you install it but all the steering controls and vehicle info is working.
Any aftermarket camera system will work with these!
Do you have any pictures of the different ways you can have the head unit placed/mounted?
Unfortunately we don't but it can be mounted more to the left or right and higher & lower. We placed it in the best position for use in a 4Runner but it can be adjusted!
For the sony xav-9500es, the gauges, the gas gauge, is that how much gas is in the tank or what specifically does that reference ? Thank you
Sorry, which gas gauge are you referencing?
I have a 2019 and was wondering how much of the HVAC controls will be blocked by the screen as this video has a digital piece in the middle but mine is all knobs. Is there a picture of a setup installed with my setup? Thanks!
Excellent question! There are some customer-submitted reviews on our product page that shows the finished product with these kits installed in 4Runners with 3 HVAC knobs!
Cliff is hilarious. He sounds like Kenny Powers. I can’t take him seriously.
LOL! We've never heard that before ... haha.
HA now i have to rewatch, KP is my favorite. I had him as Jimmy Kimmel’s lost twin myself lol
Would the TPMS numbers be available for a 2016 Trail Premium? Thanks!
Yep, they should be either via the standard wiring harness or with OBD connector harness we include with every kit.
I want this, but afraid the screen will block the vents. Anyone have updates on this long term? Will the heat from the vents in winter cause the CPU and I Atala of that system to heat up?
We personally used it in our 4Runner for over a year with zero issues from the vents in all 4 seasons (winter, spring, summer, fall)! :-)
Will this work for 2010 model year? The video description says 10-22 however when you follow the link, the website says 14-23. Could you please clarify this, thank you.
It will again soon. We had to pull the 2010 - 2013 versions for a bit to work out some kinks. Stay tuned!
The screen in this video seems to stick out pretty far. Are you able to push it farther back so it sits closer to the dash?
You absolutely can if you want. We just place it in the position that makes it the easies to install yet still look pleasing to the eye.
trying to decide between this one and the 8100. i want the wireless connectivity, but this screen definitely looks like it blocks the AC. and i'm in the hot texas sun.. i need that AC. any experience wth it? which should i get?
i have had both get the 9500
Great question! The 9500ES is much more modern technology and we haven't had any complaints about the screen blocking airflow! We had it in our shop 4Runner and loved it!
One thing I never see on these videos is what happens to the car menus to set the door lock behavior headlight on time etc.
All of those functions are retained with this kit!
I want to be able to watch Netflix and other streaming while waiting in the car. I have an iPhone. Is this possible with this head unit or any other head unit for the 4 runner.
Our Alpine units offer video playback when the vehicle isn't in motion!
iM INSTALLING THIS UNIT LATER THIS WEEK, THE SCREEN IS SERIOUS.
Indeed it is! Let us know if there's anything we can help with but this install should be a breeze for you!!
Fit for 2022 4Runner TRD Pro? Because the vehicle has a 360 camera。。。
It fits perfectly and your 360 capability can be retained via assigning the functions to steering wheel controls via the flashing process.
Does this disable the toyota remote start / stop, fuel level, last drives etc in the app?
The 9500 bundle does not disable your app! Your app will still work as it does with the factory head unit!
I just installed this on my wife’s 18 4Runner, the back up camera won’t turn on when you put it in reverse, and the gauges are not displaying any like yours did when powered up. Is there something I did wrong and how do I fix the back up camera to work when I’m reverse?
Yep, we have an easy fix for that ... send us an email to support@trailgridpro.com and we'll send you the troubleshooting info!
Installed yesterday and my backup camera (factory) is very grainy with this unit. Also I have no tire pressure info on the vehicle info screen. Installed in a 2018 4Runner also.
It looks like it’s blocking the vents and sticking out a lot, can it be more flush?
There's ways to make it slightly more flush, but this is the way we set it up for shipment and customer install.
Not sure about the protruding screen setup. Wondering why Sony didn't come up with an in-dash system. The vents, blowing onto the back of the system could cause an issue as well. My most pressing question is, can this system handle the Multi-Terrain Monitoring system offered in the new Toyotas? It's a 4-camera system that offers top-down 360-degree view of the vehicle, as well as each side independently. I love the features of this Sony system; however, if it's not fully compatible with my vehicle's capabilities, well then obviously it wouldn't be worth the purchase.
Yep, your MTM camera system is maintained with our kit!
Wouldn't the head unit block air from the vents and get hot as shit when the heat is on full blast?
I ran this all winter with no issues in that department. If you're looking for an option that doesn't cover vents, check this video out: czcams.com/video/hYy9jsDMeHs/video.html
can the screen go further down to prevent vents from being blocked. Or was it all the way down in the video?
Absolutely! You can definitely put the screen lower!
I was wondering the same thing. It seems if it is lowered any further, then it may obstruct the control knobs. If only they had the very same unit but slightly smaller...
@@TrailGridProWas that shown in the video and I missed it?
When I’m on a call the person says they can barely hear me. Any microphone adjustment that you can do for this problem?
Hmm, we can try to send you a new microphone! Get in touch with us here and we'll help ya out: trailgridpro.com/pages/technical-support
I got in touch with your customer service, which is great btw. The kit I ordered didn’t have the new microphone mount for the factory position included. They sent me one and once installed everything sounds great now. Thanks!!!
Does the rear camera video quality improve with this unit?
Unfortunately not - the factory backup camera will stay about the same unless replaced with a higher quality aftermarket camera.
Hi there. I have a 2019 Limited with amplified JBL audio. I have purchased and replaced 8 speakers with your Kicker bundle. I noticed a slight improvement but I wasn’t too impressed. Thinking about the Sony 9500. Would this unit make a difference in sound compared with the OEM head unit? Thanks
might need to add another amplifier.
The 9500ES will definitely bring your sound to life paired with our Kicker speakers! The stock head unit is the weak link!
I notice there is an extra connection dose it get connected to anything
Totally normal!
Is there a headunit that works with 4 cameras now that the 4Runner has the Multi-Terrain Camera system?
Interested in this as well!! Following…..
Our Maestro compatible Sony head units retain the factory 360 cam, and Alpine just released a firmware update to offer that capability with their units as well!
@@TrailGridPro Nice! Does it improve the stock image at all?
I bought this unit three weeks ago; the video didn't mention about hazard button, and it took me an hour to figure out the problem. Also, I never attempted to use Sirius XM, so the heads unit didn't include an adaptor to connect to Sirius XM (of course). However, the video mentioned the gray cable was for Sinus XM, and I followed them. Thought it was an easy installation, but the head unit didn't read Apple Carplay (No GPS was found). I re-watched the videos several times and swapped the GPS cable to Sirus XM per video instruction, and it worked perfectly fine. Love the heads unit and fast shipping, but poor instructions (false information at some points)
Review: 3.5 stars out of 5 (It could have been much easier with better instruction)
For Non-Sirus XM video
Please go opposite to their instruction (11:39)
This video didn't include hazard button swap info
Thanks for your feedback. Yessss, you need to remove the hazard harness from your factory radio prior to reinstalling! We had removed our factory radio so many times that we didn't have to do that with this shoot and then totally forgot to mention it in the install video. Totally our fault - we're clearly VERY human! That being said, we sincerely appreciate your thorough feedback and if there's anything we can do for you, let us know. However, the information about the SiriusXM plug versus the GPS plug is correct in our video.
This is crucial!
Do you guys carry any flush mounted radios. Not a big fan of the outward mount and the only flush ones I can find are some straight from China shady units.
We do! Check them out here: trailgridpro.com/pages/toyota-4runner-accessories
Hi there, what about the jbl stock amplifier?
Pairs perfectly with the stock JBL amp!
Description says 2010-2022, but product list it for 2014-2023. Soooo which is it? Will it for 2012?
Currently works for a 2014 - 2023 .. we're working on options for a 2010 - 2013 now!
How are you coping with the 2 ac vents completely blocked?
I’m thinking about getting this but I had the same question. I’m wondering if the until will overheat in the winter when I turn on my heat.
We have found that the way we adjust the screen doesn't interfere with airflow at all, and we haven't had any overheating issues!
Hi.. what about Toyota Highlander 2018?
We can build anything for ya - fill out a contact form here and we can go over specifics with you: trailgridpro.com/contact/
Hey does anyone know by any chance if this would fit a 2004 4runner SR5?
We don't have this solution for an 04 at this point. Working on it!
This kit would not, but we do have some radio options for that year range and will likely be expanding soon!
how do you reset the unit when you sell your vehicle?
There's a factory reset function in the Sony settings.
Hi, this radio FM bands will work in Europe?
As far as we know, yes! We've sold this overseas and no known issues.
Does this one come with the feature where it allows you to use a Roku stick in it?
This unit does not offer that capability.
Does the Xav-8500 have this ability?
can you install more apps to the radio?
Absolutely, any Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatible app on your phone can display on the screen!
Will the unit fit a 2021 Toyota Landcruiser?
We don't have a kit for a LC but we're constantly expanding our offering!
Do the ac vents get blocked?
The airflow into the vehicle is not blocked. Some of it may be redirected depending on where you point your vents but it all still enters the vehicle for cooling.
is it just me or is the monitor kind of blocking the main air vents?
Check out this section of the video where I talk about this exact question: czcams.com/video/oih7MyXOQrQ/video.htmlsi=6YKI4JpSK7skPz3z&t=1346
Can you detach the screen and remove it so they don’t steal it ?
yeah its 5 phillips screws
Yep, you're exactly right!
👍🏼
What firmware is running on the radio?
We update the firmware on all of our head units prior to shipping!
How do you adjust the screen position?
There are simple adjustment screws behind the screen to loosen, adjust screen and tighten again
@@andrewjarvis7777It doesn't tilt?
@@Jedi71 no tilt.
Up, down, left, right, in, out.
That's correct! You can adjust the vertical angle using the screws behind the screen!
it covers the vents
I actually covered this in the video if you want to check it out: czcams.com/video/oih7MyXOQrQ/video.htmlsi=8_ujoFxlhBjaviYT&t=1346
This is a nice unit but it fits like it was never meant to be in a 4Runner. It covers the top vents, and sticks out 6 inches. Lol.
Thanks for commenting! In our experience these look great in 4Runners. If you suspect yours may have been improperly assembled, feel free to reach out!
@@TrailGridPro are all the features the same for the 9000es?
You workout regularly?
LOL! Yes, in fact I do!
@Dirk Digler you do
@Dirk Digler yes, and why are you so pressed 😂
My favorite part is how it completely blocks the AC vents.
Thanks for watching and we sincerely appreciate your feedback!
🤣 good one haha
It doesn't block it. If you are average height your sitting position allows the vents to still clearly blow at your face. Unless you are 5' tall maybe add a phone book booster seat.
Expedia is a terrible company
Thanks for your comment! We appreciate you!
video says 2010-2022 4Runner, on the site it says 14 to 22 4Runner... I have a 2013. Does this heap work with my rig??
Currently, we're offering it for 2014 - 2023. We will have a 2005 - 2013 version coming out VERY soon!
