Just finished the install of this kit from Trail Grid Pro and it is truly impressive, especially with just the stock head unit. Unbelievable difference. It was an easy install, i juat followed this video. Instead of drilling holes on the back doors i just found a couple of short screws. Also, my dashboard speakers were not a t20, they were another set of 10mm bolts holding the speaker to the frame and they were in so tight that when i tried to loosen them the frame started to bend. So i reinstalled the frame in the dash and then loosened the speaker bolts, then removed it for install. Great job putting these kits together, I'm very happy with how it turned out. Next up is to install the Alpine bundle I bought from you guys.
Ah, we sincerely appreciate the feedback!! Thank so much for the tips! Great job on the installation! We appreciate you!
The rear doors are a PITA to install so I found out you can pop the weather strip from the door off, install that first then you can just clip the door back on super easy.
Right on! Thanks for the additional info!
I have to admit, I’m not a fan of the stock sound; after the 40-volume mark, it just turns into noise for me. While I’m no sound expert, I decided to invest in the Focal ones, hoping for a better audio experience.
Excellent choice! Thanks for choosing us for your Toyota needs!
Just installed Rockford Fosgate door speakers in my 2016 4R and like others have said, getting the rear door panels back on was a pain.
Everything else was smooth!
This video was a great reference for getting the lift gate panel off.
Thanks guys!
Right on! We're glad we could help!
I just bought these for my 4Runner. It's an easy removal and installation, sounds amazing. Excellent how to video.
Great to hear! We're honored to be a part of your build!
Did you keep the stock head unit? Just the speaker kit?
Trail Grid Pro Kicker speaker package review.
I received my Kicker speaker package from TGP, packaging was excellent and everything that was stated was included.
Installation of tweeters was easy, but note, you need to break free the bolts thats holds the speaker to bracket before removing the bracket from the dash. Those bolts are extremely tight. Once loosened the install was a breeze. Note: I added a 4x6 1" thick of soundproofing foam to the dash cavity before Installing the Kicker tweeter nicely tucking the crossover down towards the windshield just under the metal lip.
It's worth noting that adding some sort of sound damping material is worth the extra time and cost, as it vastly improves the sound quality as well as reducing noise inside the vehicle.
I installed 48 sq feet of Dynamat in my 2023 4Runner, completely covering the inside of all 4 doors and rear hatch. I then added Dynamat around all speaker enclosures as well as all across the doors without covering the area for the moisture bearer. I also added Roadkill Speed Rings to all speaker enclosures for added damping and insulation.
Kicker KS speakers are excellent speakers, the sound is accurate, crisp, and very detailed. The 6x9 woofers with some fine tuning can hit deep with accurate bass/mid bass, and the 6.5" speakers with the silk dome tweeter do an excellent job with balancing out the rear of the 4Runner.
I'm currently using the stock head unit, no additional amp or subwoofer. This Kicker speaker package is most definitely a solid upgrade that will allow you to crank it up with "concert like volume" and enjoy your music and 4Runner.
I plan on adding an amp and subwoofer at some point down the road, but for now this upgrade makes the factory HU a million times more enjoyable than it was before.
Thank you TGP & Kicker for this package.
Woohoo! Thanks so much for your feedback!! We appreciate you very much!
regarding the hatch trim panel, there's a notch on the side for ease of removal. don't use anything metal as that scratches/chips the paint. i've been working in body shops and wrenching for almost 40 years and that's the way i've done and will continue to do.
Thanks for the feedback! Our guys are great at what they do and are very careful around painted areas. We appreciate the input!
Got 2020 venture with stock system. This looks like the upgrade that will make all the difference. Got kicker sub in my honda, so i know kicker is top of the food chain
Absolutely - it'll work great!
I just installed this on my 22 4Runner. Is a major upgrade, high audio quality. Easy to install. This video is very detailed. 👍👍👍
We appreciate the positive feedback and we're stoked to here you're enjoying the upgrade!
Did you keep the stock head unit? Just the speaker kit?
2021 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Premium - I just found your channel!! Where have ya'll been all my life! At least the last 3 yrs! 😂
HAHAHA! Happy we're here now! We appreciate ya!
I just installed this on my 2016 4R! THS is a major upgrade compared to the stock speakers! While I had all the panels off I installed Second Skin Damplifier Pro Deadening Mats. All I can say is wow this combo paired with the Trail Grid Sony XAV-AX7000 bundle with its 100Wx4 power is perfect! Trail Grid Pro bundles are top notch and worth the investment. I cant wait to see what they come out with next for the 4Runner!
Thank you so much for the positive feedback! We appreciate ya!
“That’s actually a really good question Cliff and I’ll dive a little bit into that.” 😂 Idk why this made me laugh so hard. Infomercial vibes
Haha, that's so funny! We're not actors ... haha!!
Just finished this install. Generally straightforward aside from a few things. The passenger side tweeter bracket required bending back the tabs on the adapters with pliers. It also didn't use a torx, but another 10mm which was VERY tight, so I broke it loose while still mounted. Reattaching the rear door panels was really tough on ours - had to squeeze the top of the panel over the door frame with a lot of pressure to get it back in. Overall we're happy with the new sound. The tweeters and 6x9 in front make a huge difference and it was worth the effort!
Thanks for the feedback on your install experience! We're stoked to hear you're enjoying the upgrade!
Thank you for taking the time to come up with this set up. I just installed these this morning on my 2022 Off road. The difference is night and day. Particularly in the mids you can actually hear everything. I am leaning toward a new head unit now because If I could actually dial in the system these speakers would be Ideal for my needs. I do not have an amp and I didn’t install any dampering material or hush tape. I did notice though it was easier to take the window guide off of the top of the door panel after I took them off. Put the guide on before I pushed the panel back on. Otherwise it could be difficult to get the panels back on trying to angle it push down and fight the hard tabs in the guide. Thank you again.
Thank you so much for your super kind words! We are super pumped you’re happy with the new speaker set up!!
i fought with the door panels forever and then i saw this comment. this made it so dam easy.
I'll stick with the JBL. Always amazes me going from my VW to the 4R
Right on!
i got one of the sony 8100 bundles a few months ago, its awesome. i just ordered this kit. you guys are killing it, looking forward to more cool stuff in the future.
Thank you so much for your super kind words and your continued support! We appreciate ya!
@@TrailGridPro may I ask if the front dash sound quality, is it much better? clarity/vocal?
Great video, great product. I definitely do this on my 4runner. One bitter piece-replacing the speakers without dampening the door, makes only 50% effect. 5gen 4runner has awfull noisy, thin door! It is begging for sound proofing…
Oh absolutely, we completely agree with you! We definitely recommend it! Thanks for your comment!
Just ordered a set for my 23. Cannot wait to get them installed. Great job on your videos. Very well made, informative, and easy to follow.
Woohoo! Thanks for the order and for your kind words!
The rear door install you mention one screw is too long and to drill a hole 7/64th in the door to accomidate the screw. Why not use a shorter screw? This kit, at this point, should have 2 shorter screws as apposed to drilling a hole in the door. Also would it make a difference to install a foam tape between the door and the speaker mount? I'm seriously considering this kit for ease of install.
Great question! We recently switched to shorter screws for these kits! We don't use foam tape on our installs and have had no issues or complaints!
Awesome stuff gentlemen. Gonna make me go back to the days of Kicker Resolution Components/Boston Pro Components and Boston Pro 12's
Heck yea! Thanks for your kind words!!
I need someone to be 100% honest with me. I am 56 years old and think the 2022 4Runner with 3000 miles has a pretty good sounding system. It is not the JBL system. The reason why I got this suggestion to look at this video from Youttube is I was looking at the Subaru tweeter upgrade yesterday. Those little dash speakers for $80 to $105 looked to be a kind of cool upgrade i could do in a few minutes. I like old AC/DC and we listen to the Beatles channel and Ozzy station on the SAT radio. Would the $700 for this kit just blow my mind or should I just get the little dash speakers? I have bought BFG stock size tires and do want to level the front of 4Runner soon. PS I am not rich.. I am just a working man with teenage daughters that take a lot of my money..LOL
I (Cliff) have this same system in my 2020 4Runner TRD Pro with a JBL amplified system and I absolutely love it!
The tweeter upgrade really helped mine alot with clarity. I am pretty happy with just that alone but I want more bass now lol. I’d start with this kit. It’s on sale and has all you need
I also like the factory system but added a Jbl 12" powered sub with controller for better bass. If you are listening to just rock you could do better than this for cheaper. Kicker to me is a Walmart brand and 800 is kind of steap.
Also bilstein 5100 makes a good lift/ leveling kit for about 700$
@@gregr5424 that's an interesting take. there are several drop-in speaker choices including this kicker offering. others are OEM audio plus, kenwood and the Focal IS line. there are more but those will give you relatively the same results. the stock system is absolutely horrendous in the 4runner, it's right up there with the headlights on the scale of "what was toyota thinking?". i personally run audio frog GS line speakers in my '19, i'm very happy with them but i have helped friends install the kenwood's and kicker KS line. you can just about do the whole truck with either of those for the cost of my audio frog GS690's. the frogs are better but for most people they will be very happy with the kenwood or kicker. no matter what anyone chooses to do job number one should be to change the dash speakers, use literally anything that will fit (drop in tweets, 2 3/4" speakers, some 3.5" speakers etc.) the reward is well worth the minimal cost and time spent. PS. not a huge fan of the Focal's, cost too much and sound no better than the kenwood or kicker KS.
Just ordered the kit for my 2022 TRD Sport. The mids on the stock speakers sound really muffled and not much clarity. The lows are decent enough, but really looking for crisper sound. Looking forward to installing this! Thanks for the great speaker kit and setup video.
Thanks so much! Let us know what you think!
@@TrailGridPro - These are GREAT! I actually ended up installing a DSP, since I wanted more power. Holy smokes these things have some bass. I have to turn my bass almost all the way down. Great kit. Thank you!
I'd be curious to see the difference between this setup and the OEM audio plus. Also, would like to see a dedicated amp / sub install with this as well.
We've never compared them so not sure. We have heard great things about the OEM Audio system though!
I can tell you right now it will never sound very good without adding a power amplifier to power the speakers. The stock head unit can hardly power the factory speakers without volume distortion.
Really want to enhance these Kickers? Sound deaden the doors.
Good point! We appreciate your comment!
i know someone in a group that bought this kit and the sound isn't there. he's going to get an amp to be able to hear the sound and to hear it crisper and sharper.
A speaker is only as good as its source, so a more powerful head unit or amplifier would definitely get more potential from aftermarket speakers!
A 4th gen 4Runner version should be easy to create using the same speakers, minus the rear hatch pair, with and without the rear sub.
True! We're working on it!
I’d like to know how the Kicker speakers (installed in this video), which are available for $528 on your website, compare to the Focal speakers that are also available on your website, which are on sale right now for $797 but retail for $1,039. excluding the current sale on the Focal speakers, is there really a $511 ($1,039-$528=$511) sound difference between the Focal speakers and Kicker speakers? with the current sale there is only a $269 ($797-$528=$269) difference between the two speaker options. obviously if the sound quality really is $511 better between the two then it’s definitely $269 better as well, which is why i mention the retain price, since sales don’t last forever.
They create different sound experiences. Focal focuses on clarity and Kicker focuses on a more full body, concert-like sound. It honestly depends on what you're looking for from your speakers. In this example, un-matched clarity (i.e. Focal) is certainly a premium result that does cost more ... Focal hand makes all of their speaker components in France. That being said, they are both better than your stock speakers so regardless of the option you choose you'll be better than stock.
Hello just purchased this kit, will this kicker 46KISLOAD4 K-Series interface and Kicker 46CXA3604 CXA3604-4x90-Watt 4-Channel Full-Range Amp work with the oem radio? To add more power and keep the stock radio.
It absolutely will, but you'll likely need a line-out converter in order to run an amp off of your factory radio.
I got this kit a few weeks ago. And today did the front doors and tweeters. The tweeter install for me was a little different. Maybe because I have stock system. I mean it was easy to figure out but there was no way for me to take off the tweeter bracket. Basically there was no bracket. Also the original tweeter bolts felt like they were installed with lock tight. The bolts were insanely hard to get them going. FWIW I’m not good at this stuff, the tweeters took me about 30 minutes. And doors about 90. First door took a bit longer as I was taking my time and the door itself T is hard to put back on. Finally figured out to angle to door closest to the windshield to get it back on the tracks. Also one other thing, these are just small things I ran across, but the brackets are door specific. If your holes are not lining up to put the bracket on grab the other one. Maybe I am wrong in this? I on the remaining 4 speakers I am going to put the speakers on the brackets first then install in the door and hatch. Honestly it’s a little tricky to to hold the speak and try to put the screws in and line up the holes if your doing it by yourself.
As for the sound for sure a big improvement. I am always one that feels like speakers need to break in. But for sure a huge improvement over stock. Running a Sony unit also bought from TGP. Well done fellas.
OMG I am dumb I just noticed the window was rolled down 😂😂 well don’t leave the window up like I did.
Thanks so much for your thorough feedback and your super kind words! Yesss, definitely keep the windows down when putting the door panels back on!! :-)
For the 4Runner without JBL, would these speakers improve the volume? Or they improve the definition so you can vamp up the vol without losing quality?
Volume (loudness) is a product of power and unless you change your source of power (new head unit or adding an amp) you will not get improved "loudness" - you will get improved audio quality though.
instead of drilling through the door, take the damn screw and grind off the tip enough to clear.
These kits now come with shorter screws to correct this.
@@TrailGridProsweet I JUST got the kit and was hoping not to encounter that. But the screws in the kit look smaller so I’m happy 😊
Sweet very cool - awesome for my 2022 4Runner TRD ORP
Absolutely!!
I have a 2011 limited with party mode. Will this system work on my runner?
Yep it absolutely will work in your 4Runner!
My front door speaker mounts don't have the cutouts for the wiring harness
Kicker changed those kits and we just discovered this week that a small notch is required to run the wires through. We are now modifying the brackets during out assembly process! We apologize for the confusion!
Thank you for doing this. Finally an affordable speaker upgrade. Are you working on a subwoofer replacement?
Thanks for your kind words! We are working on a sub option!!!
@@TrailGridPro Hallelujah!! I cannot wait to purchase this. Question when the subwoofer comes will you have a dedicated amp for it?
@@neillucas8138 Yep, we’ll definitely have an option with a dedicated amp!
@@TrailGridPro Going off topic here what is that radio you have in the 4runner in the video. Are you doing a video for it? Thanks.
Sold out. Planning to have these available again?
They're available now! trailgridpro.com/products/kicker-8-speaker-4runner
I'm about to install mine...should the windows on the doors be in the up or down position. Thanks
I'd put them down! It's easier to rehang the door when the windows are down.
When will this be back in stock? definitely would order a set. Thanks!
Should be back in stock in a week or two at most!
Great video. Looking forward to getting mine installed 😀
Woohoo! We appreciate that! Enjoy the upgrade!
Is there a plug and play speaker system for tundra ?
Good question! We're working on it but we don't have that available at this time!
I just bought my 2024 4Runner, please, can I install this equipment on this model?
We haven't confirmed the necessary adapters for a 2024, but they're likely the same or very similar!
I just want to know what head unit you have, the screen is huge. I have the alpine 11inch and that look alot bigger
The Alpine 11 inch is the biggest head unit we have so you have the biggest!!
2010-2013 not included? It is still a 5th gen.
We're still working out the connectors to make it plug and play! Coming soon!
Great video ! Do you have any plug and play speakers compatible with a Toyota FJ Cruiser ?
Thank youuuuu! We don't at this time but we're working on it!
We want for camry 2023, which is the best for its factory unit ?
We don't have any hands on experience with a 2023 Camry, sorry about that!
I like to hear how it sounds. I do not have the jbl system on my 2022 4runner but I’m wondering if the head unit have enough power to push the upgraded speakers.

Will this Kit work on 2011-2013 Toyota Highlanders Non JBL?
Unfortunately we've never tested it. Not sure. Sorry!
Maybe you can try it for fitment? I would really appreciate it, since I was looking to upgrade my factory speakers. Thank you in advance!
Can I buy just some speakers instead of the whole set? I want to buy a pair for the tailgate, thanks!
At this time we only sell everything as a kit. Sorry!
These should also fit Tundras and Tacomas.
We've never tested them in a Tundra but we do have a Tacoma kit!
This is awesome, will you guys be coming with a head unit compatible for the 22 model years?
Yes! Very soon!
So why won't these work on the 2013 limited?
We're working on it!
Does the stock headunit nonJBL in a 2018 have enough power to really drive all those speakers?
Yeah, that's a good question.
Good question. I would love to know the answer to this too. I would like to keep my OEM head unit but would like to upgrade the speakers.
Our rule of thumb is sound is a personal preference. For some, it will be enough - but those looking for more can always swap to one of our Sony bundles for more power or add an amplifier.
@@TrailGridPro which amplifier you have available?
The stock head unit absolutely DOES NOT have enough power to drive these speakers. This plug and play kit is incomplete. Not to mention the kicker ks series sensitivity is quite poor. They should be including an amp in this kit if you have a stock head unit.
Do you have a upgrade kit for 2023 tundra?
Not at this time but we're working on it!
Do you need an amplifier when installing in SR5 non-JBL?
An amp is not necessary, but we definitely recommend a more powerful source to run these speakers. An amplifier or more powerful head unit would do the trick!
Please come out with this for the Tacoma!!
It’s coming!
So the Focal are better than kicker right?? Any video coming?
They're different. Focal provides the cleanest, crystal clear audio experience that we've heard - but their focus is clarity over bass. Kicker focuses more on a full body of sound.
Hi, one question ... I have the JBL system in a 21' Pro. I had the OEM Audio+ in my 2016 ORP, and it was great. The JBL is ok, not as good as OEM Audio+ ... I'm looking for some improvement, and their solution is 3k and to have to mail them your JBL sub housing. Looking for something a little easier and cheaper, but as I understand, the JBL systems have the crossover in the HU for the dash speakers different than the stock system. Are the dash speakers in this kit different or crossed over differently for JBL systems? I've read of some bad results with OTS component speakers in the JBL dash. Thanks.
We wire the crossovers into the wiring adapters for these kits. We have seen great results using these speakers and a more powerful head unit!
Is it the little dash speakers that sound like crap when using my phone with Bluetooth?
Are you referring to your factory dash speakers? If so, and they don't sound good ... yes, they might be blown.
This will be on my bucket lists of upgrades. Any promo codes in the coming holidays?
I'm sure we'll have some sort of sale going on!
Do the brackets come with gaskets? It seems in the video they just mount straight onto the door without gaskets like the factory speakers.
Great question! The brackets mount straight to the door, but we haven't had any issues without gaskets!
Is there a ballpark ETA on the amp bypass and sub upgrade on JBL factory system???
Shouldn't be long now! Media finished up taking the photos last week and we should have them on the site very soon!
I have an 2019 Limited.. I am not impressed with the sound. Wondering if this kit will really make a difference. Thanks
It absolutely will! I installed this exact set up in my Toyota 4Runner with JBL amplified and it rocks!
I already replaced my doors but need the tweeters and rear?
Ah, at this time we just sell everything as a kit.
If i don’t have the trd off road with the amplified jbl system, do I need to buy some sort of amp to push these? Not sure the factory amp will make these sound good.
You don't "need" to but you certainly can if you want to!
Will these be offered in any bundle packages with the Sony Headunits for 2018 4runners?
It's almost as if you can read minds! Yes, in early 2023.
JBL is higher quality than kicker in the aftermarket world, however they're both low tier brands, always have been with JBL being slightly mid tiered in the early and mid 90's
Thank you for your comment! Many brands (JBL included) have different levels of products varying in quality. In our experience, the JBL equipment offered as factory features in vehicles is not the highest of quality, and Kicker's line of speakers is certainly an upgrade over the stock JBL equipment.
Will all these speakers fit regardless of the plug and play feature for a 2010 4runner sr5??
Yep, they will work in a 2010!

This install in perhaps one of the most difficult things I’ve had to do. I’ve been blown up and shot at and this install shit made me insane. You have to remove the weather stripping on top of the panel. The way these guys do it is very difficult. My results may not be the same as yours. I fucked with the back door for maybe two hours. On one door. Still haven’t done the other one or the hatch after 5 hours. I put in sound dampening too though. Door panel clips kept falling out, so I had to find them and reinstall. My mental health was being affected. I finally just had to stop and reevaluate and found this link helpful. czcams.com/video/crEKiz4guFs/video.html. Oh, and pro tip. Make sure you cables are clipped in right. Otherwise, you’ll have a machine gun effect on the lock when you put the car in drive or park and spend even more time finding clips again. In the dark. After your headlight battery dies. Good luck or just pay Toyota or and installer to do this. But it does sound nice with just three speakers in so far 😢
Thank you for commenting! We're sorry to hear you had troubles with your install but we appreciate the feedback!
I have a feeling these wouldn’t work in a 03 limited v8🥲
Unfortunately we haven't tested them in an 03. Sorry!
