Randomly stumbled upon this video. Thank you for including how to turn the maintenance notification off!
You’re very welcome!! 😉
I watched the video and just tested my 4Runner to see if I had remote start. I didn’t think I did. Turns out I did. Wish I watched this 1 year ago. You’re the best!!!
That’s freaking awesome!!
You got it!! 👍🏻
Welcome to the channel!!
Hey, what year and model is yours
Do that trim and the limited comes with automatic start?
What yr and model do you have?
What Trim Package do you have. Mine is a ORP I dont think that works for mine.
Absolutely phenomenal videos! WELL DONE!!
Thanks for taking the time.
🙏🏻 You got it.
Thank you for your support!!
This is awesome! Thank you so much for making 4 runner videos.
Thank you for your kind words!! 🤘🏻
Love these videos. I knew about a few of these features, but, I did not know about the trailer brake controller! Thank you!
You got it!!
Thank you for watching!!
Came across your videos this evening. They are awesome!
Welcome aboard! Thank you!🙏
Best brake controller is a redarc, mount box anywhere at any angle and the mini control head goes in any of the blank switch covers in dash and matches the factory switches. It works amazingly well
Interesting, thank you for sharing.
sick!!! thanks for this.
You got it!!
Good video Mr Viking. Thanks!
Your very welcome Sir!! 🙏🏻
Dang, those tips were kool. I just got a 2015 limited Runner & didn’t explore much but after watching your 5th video with the tips that we could do(1st video I really liked)also I have to watch your others but only until I check out if I have that 3rd seat. Omg, if I do have it that’ll be awesome(for my older grands so this comment is a ++ bought it last July gone check out your tips and I will be back…Mahalo Much🌺
🙏🏻 Thank you!! 😉
thank you 👍
I just enjoy listening to you talk!
I appreciate you! welcome to the Channel!!
you are the freaking MAN! had no idea about the center headrest!
😉
thank you, for the video.
Your very welcome!!
Thank you for watching!
Thank you so much.
You’re very welcome!!
AWESOME THANKS!
Your very welcome!!
Did know about the brake system. Thanks
I’m sorry, I don’t understand your question???
Thank you for making these great videos! I was going to purchase a remote start for my 2023 4runner and it turns out it has 😁😁😁😁one already installed from the factory. 😁
That’s awesome!! 👍🏻
Love the videos! The 4R is definitely an obsession. Would love to know (and a video maybe?) what you think about the ScanGauge III. Just got one today, plug and play and so much info now. Touch screen is great and simple interface. And another gadget, never ends! Keep up the awesome videos. 💪
Very cool idea, I used to have a scangauge 2 . Will look into it. 😉
Thank you for your continuous support!
The remote start function was also a factory option for 2012 Limited's
Cool NTK stuff
My Keurig fits perfect in the rear pocket! And it works off my stock inverter
It’s that wild, I love it!!
@Vikings Garage
Best thing about the rear cargo space is if you remove those trays in the back you gain a ton of storage space. I keep a 25 foot kinetic tow rope in the compartment on the left side. The lids/ trays snap back into place as well. Just remove (or break off) the two screws that hold the little trays in there.
Very cool!! Never even thought of that. 👍🏻
Viking dude. You are blowing my mind. I just bought a 2019 TRD PRO because I have been told that the 4runner is the longest lasting vehicle ever. And that's before I knew any of this stuff you are revealing. All I wanted was a long lasting suv. It seems I am getting that and then some.
Right on!! This is one solid truck.
Roll of paper towels or chamois tube fits perfect in the back shelf compartment.
That’s sweet, didn’t even think of that.
Thank you Sir.I will be giving it a try.
Welcome to the Channel!!
I'm glad I can offer a very important tip in return for all that you have shared in all 5 videos. I believe the only weakness in the 4Runner's armor is the steel frame, I did notice in this video you have a bit of rust already, there is hope. What I did with my 2017 was clean off as much as possible {wire brush and blow-off} everything that could rust and apply CRC Marine Heavy Duty Corrosion Inhibitor { kind of like what Cosmoline does for a gun} , it took about 4-5 spray cans. It's several years later and it's still looking great, it was probably my most important upgrade!
Thank you for sharing the tip,
I have covered it in other videos :
czcams.com/video/ooLEzjpRjX4/video.html
czcams.com/video/94PgDIRdQ-8/video.html
Is that still an issue on the 2023 version?
Clean the frame thoroughly with a pressure washer. Let the frame completely dry for a few days. You can still drive it as long as the roads are dry and no mud. Touch up the frame with Rust Oleum Rust Oleum Rust Inhibiting spray paint. About $6.00 per can. Wait three to four years and repeat the process. Yeah, you read that right. Repeat every three to four years. It lasts that long! I own and operate a paintless dent repair business. I see 20 year old Toyotas with zero Rust on the painted sheet metal. The frames will have surface rust. I offer to touch up the frames for my customers. Most agree to have it done. The bumpers on Toyotas do not fair as well as the painted sheet metal. Aftermarket bumpers are cheap and easy to replace. Rusted body panels are expensive to fix and have no guarantee they'll stay that way. The red headed Viking in these videos has almost 167,000 miles on his 4Runner and the body still looks brand new. For less than $50.00, the undercarriage can also look brand new. The 4Runner in the video also has New Jersey plates on it. If New Jersey is anything like Northwest Illinois, the D.O.T. salts the hell out of the roads during the winter months. That says alot about Toyotas considering they are exposed to this damn road salt and they do not rust out like a Big Three truck or SUV does. I just had a four year old GMC Yukon Denali in my shop that has serious rust bubbling around the rear wheel arches. That Yukon Denali cost the owner $88,000 new! Toyotas don't break and they don't rust out within four years. It's another reason why I stopped buying from the Big Three.
Try Fluid Film in a spray can. I buy it by the gallon but I see it's now offered in a spray bomb. It's easier to find than the CRC product and cheaper in price.
Very good advice indeed, I’ll never buy anything else other then a Toyota.
I believe you about the 3rd row seats because I have one and also have the remote start
Very nice, remote start makes things so easy in the winter. I’m going to install one soon. I appreciate you watching!!
I have a limited and love ever feature it offers. Trd is awesome but would be a party trick for me.
Lol, I totally get it!
Excellent video as usual! One thing I noticed on my 4R is that I had 3 tow hooks (2 in the front and one in the rear). But since the cat back exhaust makes a 90 degree turn behind the right rear wheel (rather than going straight out the back on a standard exhaust) I was able to add a 4th tow hook in the rear.
🤫 I thought I was the only one who saw that. Keep that in mind, just finished shooting a video in which that hook plays a crucial role. (Very good eyes 👍🏻)
@@VikingsGarage Thanks VG. Also something else to think about....I have a 2020 4Runner TRD Pro. I noticed that the air-conditioner drain tube drips water onto the frame. My concern is that it may eventually lead to a rust problem. Could you please address this in one of your future 4Runner videos, and maybe recommend a possible fix to reroute the water drip away from the frame and onto the ground? It might be a good issue to address by video. Just an idea...thanks.
I’m a step ahead of you, I’ve covered it. And yes if not addressed it will cause a frame rust issue.

@@VikingsGarage Outstanding VG!!! Thanks a lot!!! 👍👍
You got it, I’m happy to help.
I do appreciate your support.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!!
The 4runner is my 2nd favorite vehicle next to my wrangler
Both epic machines!!
Thank you for watching
Hi Viking, good video. I just bought a 2023 forerunner Limited I love it. I got it back in January. Can I install that sliding rear tray in my truck? I love it. I also saw videos that people use that to camp to sleep. thank you keep up the good videos, my name is Bobby. Cheers. Have a great day.
You can totally install that sliding rear cargo tray.
Thank you for your support!!
Just bought a 2024. Showed me some cool stuff about it.
Awesome!! Congrats on the new ride!
I’m taking delivery of one on Wednesday that was posted as having third row seats but the salesperson and I looked and figured it was a mistake. Excited to look again!
👍🏻
On our '17 ORP we inadvertently discovered auto-start by clicking the lock button 3x on the key fob. Scared the heck out of us until we learned it was a feature and not a bug!
Good feature to have also. 😅
I have a 2017 Limited and tried pressing lock button 3 times but nothing 😔
@@claudiacanales2662 interesting. 🤔 I wonder if previous owner added something aftermarket?!?
💯 aftermarket for sure
Did you know that.... The blank insert (1:25 in your video) to the left of fan speed control and at 4 o'clock of your wheel was the original spot for a "Party Mode" button? 5th Gen 4Runners from 2010 - 2013 had a Party Mode selector which allows you to shift all of the stereo output to the liftgate speakers. Turn on Party Mode, Lift up the hatch and you had the ultimate mullet 4Runner - Business in the front, party in the rear!
I did know that, covered in episode 2. No offense but at about 6 to 10 4Runners a week for 12 years there’s very little I don’t know. But I do appreciate you watching and pointing that out.
I appreciate your support!!
I think you can change the eco bar in the menu option. Good video!
Thank you, that’s not correct.
You can remove the “ECO LIGHT “ in the menu option, the bar always stays on. 😉
@@VikingsGarage must have heard you wrong the first time. Haha. Watched it again and yes your right. 👍🏼
No worries, my English is not that great 😊 . I’m here to help.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel!!
TRD 4Runners for the WIN
🤘🏻
I have a 2022 sr5 premium and I haven’t tried the remote start so I’m excited to see if it has it
It will not , I should have specified that is the limited and TRD Pro only.
Those wheels looked really good on that limited @ 10:00 I just purchased a 2024 ORP, and no remote start 🙄. I guess only the limited, and pros have it
That is correct. 😅
@Viking Garage - Is the sliding deck only available as factory option, or can it be added later? Thank you for all the effort and details.
You can totally add it afterwards.
Bolts right up.
Oh shit! Extra storage with the sliding tray! Looks big enough for a set of 3/8 drive short sockets( in a snap-on magnetictray so theyre not rattling around), wrenches, assortment of screwdriver bits and small Tupperware full of bs stuff! Better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them! ❤
This is true!!
I have a factory remote start on my 2017
They need drivers side grab handle on A pillar, black upper trim w headliner and toyota needs to offer slimline window ventshades as OEM accessory. Also the power lock motors fail on these at 50k miles, and the 2nd row seat cables ALWAYS fall off the mounts inside the seats you gotta fix all that yourself for free or pay stealership to snap em back in place. Door lick motors are $10 each on amazon dont pay $650 a door at dealer! DIY $10
👍🏻
I put a request in a previous video…..kill switch battery disconnect….I don’t want to have my 4 runner stolen
Love these hidden features videos! Local dealer told me the software update is like $250! Does that sound right?
A bit steep, usually 1 hour labor.
Takes 1 hour to upload.
Awesome content brother. How heavy of a boat is that you are towing with the 4R? I have one that comes in around 4500 LBS dry so worried about that plus payload and shorter wheelbase. Let me know your thoughts brother, thank you. Subscribed right away, amazing content, finally YT recommends a good channel. God Bless.
Thank you for the support!
Our boat is 4,000 lbs with the trailer. Your totally safe up to 5,000 lbs. I’ve got customer towing even more then that constantly without skipping a beat.
@@VikingsGarage Thank you Viking! Certainly feels better to hear that coming from a professional. I guess I will have to do the Trans filter change as you instructed in your other video 😅 Thanks man, great binge worthy content!
🤘🏻🙏🏻
I got excited went outside immediately after watching the video and attempted to remote start my 2020 TRD Off-road Premium, I can confirm that it does NOT have remote start.
Yeah, same here my premium 2022 TRD off-road doesn’t have it. 🤷🏼♂️
Great video! Is there a cost to have the radio upgrade done?
Yes, it’s usually 1/2 hour charge. It literally takes an hour to upload.
I have a 2019 Trd Off Road 4Runner. My question is how to remove & replace cabin filter. I know it's in clove box. And a lot of things I hear you have to take glove box out. But I see 2 clips that might be cabin filter? If you can please help. I like your video. Thanks Walt.
I got you Walt, check out the video I made on it:
czcams.com/video/N-Wjg2wr0Z4/video.html
Very easy to do, I know you can do it.
Good luck!!
Welcome to the Channel.
Really good video. I thought I could add that cargo slider later but was told today you have to buy it that way from the start. Kind of a bummer :( Is there any kind of aftermarket one they sell? Thanks
That’s not entirely true, you can add it.
It just becomes a bit expensive to do so
@@VikingsGarage Thanks. I'm a mechanic and can do it. I got the impression I couldn't even buy it. Appreciate your help.
@T18skyguy you got this!! 💪🏻
s2000????? WOW you are amazing
Thank you, S2000 are great!! 😜
Where are you located? It looks like you have a lot of rust underneath. What year is your 4Runner? I just bought a 23 Premium. Love it!! Love your content!!
2015 located in the rust belt. New Jersey
I appreciate you!!
Thanks for the sharing in the videos. We need to at least switch to Accessory mode to use the 4runner radio or multimedia, but this very battery consuming if engine is not running, do you have any idea how to do simple modification to switch on radio in Off mode (neither in Accessory nor Start mode)? Thanks in advance.
I appreciate your kind words!
You simply can’t, it’s done that way do you don’t drain your battery. 🤷🏼♂️
@@VikingsGarage I know the Toyota original design not allow that. I have connected the battery to external charge maintainer. I believe without turn to Accessory mode this will further reduce the battery drainage. Please share if you have simple dashboard wiring modification to make this happen. Thanks.
No modification here.
Very nice.
I have many items under my tray a d in the horizontal compartment.
What I do not have it the anchor bracket that was on the green runner. I saw it when you opened the tray. Do you know if that is a factory item or know where I can purchase it.
Thank you for the information
Comes stock that way factory installed, on the Trail special edition only, that plate it’s where the cooler strap goes into to strap it in place .
I’m pretty sure it comes together with the tray 🤷🏼♂️
I have a 2013 trail,, on my tray there was little plastic tabs, pull those out, there is a hole it goes all the way through, i pull little bolt in tie downs in there. it wont hold anything super heavy, but it works for my cooler so i can slide the tray out without unhooking it.
Pretty cool!!
Another neat feature of the third row equipped 4Runners is that you don’t need to pull the seat bottom up to fold the seat back down. It’s a flat floor all the way to the back of the first row seats.
👍🏻 Thank you for sharing
Manual mode also helps keeps the trans cooler because your torq converter stays locked longer. I dont use normal D "overdrive" around town because it causes the trans to consistently shift gears.
Excelente point! Thank you for sharing!
That and it stops the obnoxious slow gear hunting around town…
Redarc tow-pro elite trailer brake controller is an excellent option for towing.
Sweet! Thank you for sharing this!!
I know I’m late, but Does this radio update work, or required, for say my 2021 which has an “update” we can do in the settings over the wifi or is the dealership USB update different than what we as owners can do just through the settings using the WiFi??
Appreciate all of your help from your videos and replies to our, sometimes, ignorant questions lol thank you.
God bless~
PS I didn’t know about the “secret compartment” behind my sliding tray!! Thank you sir!!
Im always happy to help.
Do, yeah the USB update done at the dealership not only does it help but, yes it is completely different from the WI-FI one .
@@VikingsGarage excellent yes I will definitely have it done. Thank you sir!
For our (new to us 2021), I was able to download the radio update from the Toyota website and do it myself. The Nav baseman update requires a visit to the dealer though. :-(
I knew the secret compartment. I keep recovery gear in there.
One thing you should bring up is sliding 2nd row seats on 3rd row models.
It’s sliding, so you can access the third row, I figured most people would put 2 and 2 together. 🤷🏼♂️
@@VikingsGarage I thought so too 🤷🏻. In one of the 4Runner forums there was someone complaining of absolutely 0 foot room for 3rd row seats. He wasn’t aware that entire 2nd row was able to slide forward.
Yeah, it’s hard to please everyone
Ok your are dope , not only did you help with a few issues but you are a viking. I'm Icelandic, so im really hoping the stereo update will help with this issue that way too many people are having. Stereo just turning off and on when it wants and the backup camera not working, 30/40% off the time. Two major inconveniences. Let me know if the update helps or if it's a possible wiring issue. Thanks 😊
Thank you so much 🤗
A lot of the times the software update fixes a lot of issues. If the camera still goes black, take the rear hatch panel off and check the connection to the camera.
Reported cases of the wiring having no slack, causing the harness to pull itself unplug.
Thank you for your support 🗡️❤️
You also can turn the eco bar off from using the settings from the steering wheel
Already cover that on part 1 . 😉
But I appreciate you sharing.
i'm late to this party, but check out the redarc brake controller. You can get a perfect fitting button blank replacement, just pop a blank out and slide the redarc knob in, so you dont have that tumor looking brake controller hanging out and it looks closer to stock
Thank you for sharing, will look into it.
when I saw this video then went outside and remote started my 4runner for the first time with the fob… my brain exploded 🤯
That’s freaking awesome!! 🎉
Hi, I enjoyed your video do you know where I can get the letters you have on the back of your 4 Runner
Thank you!!
Just search “4runner overlays” you should find many sources that sell them. I this helps.
@@VikingsGarage I’m sorry I meant to say the one that says Trials
The Trail badge… I’ll have to look into it. It was a while back I got it.
Too bad you did not put this out 9 months ago your could have saved me some money on the brake controller installe.
Sorry buddy, I honestly only found out 3 months ago. I do appreciate you watching!!
Will switching into sport mode while driving affect the transmission? Always been nervous trying it, so I’ll come to a complete stop before putting it into sport mode.
Not anymore, it’s totally safe. It’s designed to do that. 😉
You can shift into manual mode especially on the highway if you are climbing a hill and need that 4th gear.
Just purchased 2017 4R limited and the remote start seems to not work but I’ve seen lots of people saying it’s a factory feature for that model…
You were so close when you were talking about the anchors for the child seat. But I’ve seen your other four and I’ve never heard you mention the locking seatbelts when you pull the seatbelt all the way out. Critical for child car seats. Did I miss it somewhere?
Every seat belt will lock eventually when pulled all the way out. Not a feature, that’s how they’re designed. But yes when installing a child car seat, the seat belt should be installed in the back of it as well.
I showed the anchors on the video because I’ve had people come in with the car seats. Not anchored there. 😱
I totally agree about showing those anchors. That’s very important feature. A lot of people don’t know about the seatbelts and why they lock up the way they do. As crazy as it sounds. Love your posts.
I appreciate that!!
Thank you 🙏🏻
What do you thing of a pedal commander or a pedal monster for a 2021 Forerunner. I hear only good things
I did use the pedal commander for almost 2 months , took it off. I was experiencing unwanted acceleration, scary stuff. Been told there are better products out there. Look a little deeper into it.
I store my tire chains (in bags sets of two) on each side
Very smart, I like that idea.
Thank you for sharing!!
I got a first aid kit I keep in the little back compartment
I like that idea,nice!!
At 10:00 I have a 2020 tundra , now I have to check if it has auto start lol
You better check, you might have it. Same exact way to do it.
(Hold it for at least 3 Mississippis on the 3rd one) 😉
I might have one. When you put the 4Runner into 4wd Low it automatically turns off your air bags and traction control. It would be painful enough bumping your 4Runner but can you imagine the air bag deploying just to make it an even better day?
I know what you mean. 😅
Another great video, can't wait for the next four! The back seat release to fold the back seat down comes in a round button or a square release catch. Do you know the what the difference is?
I’m not sure I do. 🤔
The round button release is for two row seat models, the square is for the third row models.
Now I do, thank you for sharing.
Skoll, Question. 2021 4runner pro auto start
Will defrost come on if you turn off truck with defrost on?
That’s a great question, I honestly do not know. Maybe someone out there knows. 🤷🏼♂️
@@VikingsGarage Thanks for the quick hit back though👍
Have you consider spray some fluid film underneath?
Has in under the vehicle, if so I’ve made a video on it:
czcams.com/video/94PgDIRdQ-8/video.html
I’ve actually just done that same job again, before this winter.
@@VikingsGarage i just bought a 22 4runner.. and i live in New Hampshire… should I apply fluid film now or next year… this is my second 4r and other one I started doing around 60k miles… bought it with 17k miles
As soon as possible, yes like now.
I have a 21 ORP and i tried the autostart thing but my lights just started flashing. Any idea what that is?
Hard to tell , but double check with your dealership. If it is indeed equipped with a remote start.
Can you do a video on the calista
I’ve been contemplating it… I’ll put it down. Can’t promise anything but give me a few months.
Thank you for your support/suggestion!!
Korngrats
Thank you!!
Is there a way to update gracenote on the radio?
There’s always a way.
Question. I'm looking at Toyotas now. I am told, on the new Highlanders and 4 Runners, there is no way to reprogram them to lock while running ,and idle with the doors locked, with the remote. I travel with a working K9 and when she is not working she needs her AC.
I've been told I can do it manually with the key, or maybe with the accessory keypad. I am not willing to fool with a key on a 50k truck. LOL But no one seems to know for sure. If I look at used how far back do I need to go to get a good old-fashioned key, with remote door locks ?
thanks
Honestly to my knowledge, you can only do it manually with the key outside in the doors key cylinder. 🤷🏼♂️
What trim level have the remote start feature?
For the very last time the Loaded Premium
Also the Venture Edition does not have the remote start unless you pay them to add it.
👍🏻👍🏻
I have a 2021 Toyota sR5 premium and I don’t think I have that feature remote start
I have a 2023 TRD premium and can't get it to remote start any help thank you
if you do exactly like I do in the video and it doesn’t start, chances are it’s not equipped. As far as I know, it only comes in the Limited or TRD PRO. Not entirely sure .
I know my 4Runner enough to know the "R" is capitalized. 🤣🤣🤣
I miss the old Entune system.
When your raising 2 small children and doing this type of venture along side a full time job… those little mistakes are inevitable.( I’ve know that too😉)
Thank you for watching!!
I found the secret compartment near the sliding tray the first time I vacuumed it out haha. I don't keep anything in there right now, but I have a few small items stashed away under the tray.
Nice job! Most people don’t realize it’s there. I heard a set of jumper cables fits perfectly under that tray.😉
@@VikingsGarage Good idea!
My last 4runner was a 2016 SR5 premium and it had remote start 👀 is that normal?
🤷🏼♂️ No idea.
Hey mine 2021 SR5 premium..3 row seating..I can't see lot of features in my car😓
1) my 2nd row just have 1 fold.
2) even when 3rd row is down.its not 100% flat..it's slope toward the end..so whenever I open my trunk..some of the stuff roll down😢
3) I don't have remote start
If you ask me, having that 3rd row is a waste. Not functional at all.
I have a 21 TRD off road premium does anyone know why the remote start doesn’t work?
Found out after making the video, that only TRD PRO and Limited trims have it. Sorry bud!!
Who wants to shift their own gears lol, 🙋🏻♂️love sport mode. 2021 Venture and no tray or cooler.
Lol. Then the confusion is settled no tray or cooler in Venture models.
Thank you for sharing that info.
The remote start did not work on my 2020 Premium. What am I doing wrong??????
Reach out to them, they do have a technical assistance line.
My 21 TRD Premium doesn’t have remote start :( I’m not sure the dealership can add it. I’d prefer factory/Toyota and not 3rd party.
the remote start only works with the 4 runner that comes with JBL system.
Yes, as stated Premium models only.
Have a 2020 premium without JBL and no remote start. I did install an aftermarket remote start.
I have a 2020 TRD OffRoad. We just discovered that it has remote start after owning it for 6 months. The dealership claimed it did not have that feature. The previous owner may have installed it. Either way, we are happy to have it!
That’s always a great find 👏🏻👏🏻
I think only the limited and the pros come with remote start
You’re probably right.
1 year and 15 K into our ownership experience and I knew maybe a third of those. Can't wait to run outside and try the rest.
You got this!
I have the 2023 premium and I either was doing the remote start wrong. Or I don't have it. How else would I know if I had it or not?
I will tell you. I paused the video and ran out to try it. And I was super bummed when it didn't work.
I just looked it up on toyota forums, and it said the remote start was "Just the Pro and Limited. It's integrated with the JBL system." In the video, you said "premium" 🤔
Yes, that was the impression I was under.
I was wrong.
Well, we cant be perfect ;-)@@VikingsGarage
I store my miscellaneous trunk stuff in a milk crate that I’ve bungee corded to the tie downs
Very cool, that probably works well too. Thank you for sharing!
I have a 2021 Venture with same key fab and mine doesn't start... Just locks doors.
Must be the premium model to have it. Usually TRD pro/limited
I have a 2014 forerunner. I have never done a audio software update I am curious what features would I gain by doing a software update here in 2022 almost 2023. The dealer said it would cost like $140 for the update just need to make sure it’s worth it.
It’s for lack of a better comparison , like a phone’s software update.
It addresses previously know bugs and issues. If your radio is not acting up I would leave it alone.
I was told I have to Darin the back but, how do I do that ???
I’m lost, what?
