  • Should you buy a Toyota 4Runner? Why is this ancient truck so reliable? A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician goes into a deep dive into the engine of the 4runner to find why it's called Ancient and why it's reliable.
In this brand new series on my channel I will take you on a Journey of discovery if you would on the very popular 5th generation Toyota 4runner expanding from 2010-2021. I will go over most of the major components of the 4runner so we can find out together what makes this truck ancient and what makes it reliable.
In the first part of this series I will be focusing on the 4runner's engine the 1GR-FE 4.0L V6. I will first go over some history of the roots of this engine which takes us back to the previous generation 4runner and IT's 4.0L 1GR-FE and even though they share the same name, the engine in those 2 generations is very different for the most part.
Then I'll show you the evolution of the old 4.0L engine to the new one and what changes and what remained the same. I'll also discuss a question that many viewers have asked which is how did Toyota manage to keep the 4runner ancient engine emissions compliant since it's technically been around since 2010 and many other cars have moved on to newer more complicated and potentially less reliable engines.
Towards the end of this video I will take you on a tour of the engine bay of the 5th generation 4runner identifying some of the key components so curious viewers or owners would know a little bit more about the awesome engine in this truck.
In part 2 of this series I will take you on a Journey on the 5th generation transmission and how that remained one of the very last trucks offered with only a 5 speed automatic transmission.

Good to know. My 03 with 190k still runs good & the interior is still nice. Especially with the free dash board replacement recall. I have no urge to get a new truck, simply because I like the body style of the 03 with the extreme fender cladding.

Using my dads 95 corolla, the whole dashboard stopped working, but I saw the timing belt replacement sticker and it said 280k miles - that was done 8 years ago. Engine still feels smooth, only problem is sometimes you have to re-engage to reverse cause sometimes the gears don't bite or something. Toyota are my number one choice, unless I can get my hands on a diesel mitsubishi/isuzu.

@@costaet I change according to local conditions, like here in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Winters can drop down to -40, summers can be hot and humid. Add in short trips under 10 minutes. Every 3 months is wise, especially if your car has GDI. With highway driving like a road trip, 6,000 miles is no problem

Couldn't get out of its own way while merging onto a highway but just dealt with it because it was such a rare bird. Had a blizzard here in NY with 3 feet of snow and this truck just clawed its way through unplowed streets leaving a trail of full size pickups in its wake. Hard to believe but true. Had my 2014 SR5 for six months now. Bought with 200,000km and still drives like new. Saved a ton of money vs buying new. Not worried about warranty because it's a 4Runner. They just don't break. Also bought a 2007 FJ Cruiser with 300,000km so I really appreciate you explaining the differences between the 1GRs.
2 best vehicles I've ever owned. Right now demand is so high for the 4Runner the dealer I bought my 4runner from offered me $2k more than what I paid them for it to buy it back lol

In the last 25 years, I've owned a Lexus LS 400, BMW 535 and Benz SL 55 AMG and they have all been to the dealerships more than once for repairs. My 2006 Toyota 4 Runner, which I originally bought as a second/back up to tow my jet ski, has never been to the dealership or any mechanic for repairs (just regular maintenance) and I have never been happier. It currently has 182,000 miles and I plan on driving it until it starts to break down, hopefully not for another 15 years! Best car I have ever owned!

Always loved my 4Runner. Unfortunately I had to get rid of it due to frame rust. If I would have bought it new, I would have had it under coated. Unfortunately I was inexperienced when I bought it and didn’t check underneath of it well enough. I would advise anyone in the rust belt to check out the frame before purchasing any older used Tacoma or 4Runner. Great vehicles, but the frames are definitely a major weak spot. That’s why I ended up buying an 08 Tacoma that had the frame replaced 2 years ago.

Just to add to my own post.. if you’re looking into a new vehicle this is the one for you! Especially since I’ve heard many rumors that the next gen will be turbo charged/hybrid for engine choices. I just love old reliable naturally aspirated engines. Although, I have no doubt Toyota will make outstanding vehicles for years to come; but for my one-and-done new car purchase, I want to drive it for two decades and beyond! 4x4 with a third row, my 4Runner has everything I’ll ever need!
Anyway, I just wanted to rant some more on just how good I feel about buying a 4Runner ;) check out Expedition Overland CZcams channel for their 4Runner content. They literally singlehandedly sold me on 4Runners!
