We packed 10 medium sized suitcases in the back and drove 3200 miles from Texas to the east coast . Spending over a week in our new limited really made us appreciate all the quality and build of a Toyota and I don’t regret buying it one minute! Best decision we ever made! Gas mileage was between 19-21 mpg on a full tank of 87 octane…..and once we even got 24mpg up in the mountains of a small town in Virginia. Toyota has my business for a long time….as long as they keep building the 4 runner like my 2023! The 4.0 V6 had sufficient horsepower….@270….

The 4Runner was $55,000 . It would have been cheaper but they hit you with a mandatory GPS system for almost $4k. Yeah, I think every new Toyota car have had some sort of problem, even the current Rav4 generation when it came out. Always suggested waiting for the 2nd year when they put out a new generation. If you look at the used car market, you are right about the last year of a generation usually holds its value really well because all the issues revolving around reliability have been ironed out and the tech although outdated compared to competitors, is usually a big difference compared to earlier years(better materials for interior, improved led lights, etc). 4Runners are probably the best when it comes to depreciating, even 3 year old 4 runners prior to pandemic could still be sold at msrp levels.

    As a new owner of a 2023 4Runner Sr5 premium 4x4, I can say I have no regrets. Sure the gas mileage is very poor compared to the Highlander, and pilot, but theres something endearing about the 4 runner.
    The design has aged well and still looks like a modern vehicle given its age.
    I was drawn to the 4runner becuase of its well known reliability and durability.
    Even though the highlander and pilot would probably have been more suited for my family's needs, the 4Runner inspires a spirit of adventure.
    Will i be rock climbing with my 4runner any time soon? Most likely not. But, I do plan to go off the beaten path on a few camping trips and even drive up to Big Bear without feeling deterred from the slight incliment weather.

We have had two big snowstorms in Colorado, and this car inspires confidence in the worst conditions. I really wanted an electric VW idBuzz, but I may just hold onto this as my last major car purchase. This video really convinced me, that's possible.

Worst thing that's ever happened is the neutral safety switch went bad causing the 4Lo light to blink and gear shifter to become stiff. The bear hunting sites are located 10 miles away on BAD 2 track. First day we took another guy's brand new Ram 2500 Longhorn. Next day we took the 4Runner. There was no comparison. We have thought about buying a more fuel efficient car, but the cost savings are clearly offset by the reliability and ruggedness of this car. So what, we spend $500 a year more (yes, first world luxury) and get to drive a car that she can rely on, even at that mileage. It is heading towards 300,000 miles, and it is still all original with the exception of tires, shocks/springs, alternator, and brake pads and rotors. And the battery. That is it.

As soon as I saw there was a year extension on the 5th Gen, and the ‘special’ color on the pro was Solar Octane, it was a ‘must have’. ZERO regrets. It’s replacing a tricked out 2nd Gen I had to give up a decade ago when kids and dogs and stuff forced us into something bigger. It definitely feels like a vehicle from another generation, but in all the best ways possible. You did sortof gloss over a number of differences that set the TRD Pro and TRD Off Road Premiums apart: KDSS option (OR Premium), ATRACS, crawl control, terrain select, etc.). Off the showroom floor, they are so darn capable.

    My wife and I test drove new Acuras, Hondas, Mercedes, and Lexus, and she actually chose the 4Runner over all of those. We picked up our 2024 Limited in white last week, and it’s awesome. I gave my daughter the wife’s Highlander, and I’m still driving my 1st gen Sequoia. We love Toyotas! Great video too - Thank you for your expert opinions!

    Great vid! I have had a 5th Gen Limited since 2017 and it’s amazing. Nearly 150K miles and going strong. I’ve done a mild lift, wheels/tires, and the brakes a few times. That’s IT except for general maintenance. I off-road the Limited trim and beat the heck out of it, never a problem. No mall crawler here. Keep the great content coming.

    I love the 5th gen 4Runners. So simple and very reliable. I almost bought one but it sold before I got the chance so I ended up going with a used GX460 (which is essentially the same frame). I’m very happy with my purchase, the 4Runner and GX are amazing trucks.

      The 4Runner might have the edge with the rear lockers. But the GX is much smoother with the v8/6speed compared to the underpowered v6/5speed and more luxurious. Glad I got the GX.

      @@kaosaepharn4326 yeah but not everyone wants to spend on premium fuel on top of how expensive gas can be with just the Toyota model alone don’t get me wrong lexus are amazing and beautiful but most would choose the Toyota since Lexus IS still a bit more techy and expensive overall

    • @bryanangelov
      @bryanangelov Před rokem +6

      @@robmalcolm8042 Both are great vehicles. I think that the 4Runner's engine is more reliable and overall, the 4Runner is a better off-roader if you get the right trim. It is also cheaper. While the Lexus GX460 comes with a more powerful engine, it is just 0.1 to 0.2 seconds faster than the 4Runner. Unless you put a loaded 4Runner against the base GX460, the acceleration is almost the same.
      I also think that the 4Runner will depreciate much less and/or it may actually appreciate it if Toyota decides to kill it and replace it with the smaller Land Cruiser. I wonder if the last 4Runners will be valued as the FJ Cruisers.

    • @andybub45
      @andybub45 Před rokem +5

      @@bryanangelov The 4runner has a slight edge on off roading due to the optional rear locker and somewhat better approach and departure angles, but it’s definitely not horrible. A far as the engines go, the V8 is going to have some more common problems compared to the 4Runner, but a lot of them are very limited because it was a Japanese built vehicle with much higher build quality. Both are very reliable. And one of the reasons I bought a GX was because it depreciates a bit more than a 4Runner. But still holds value very well and it will continue when the third gen is released alongside the 6th gen 4runner. In my opinion, the GX fixes many things people don’t like about the 4Runner. Noisy engine, gone. Brake nosedive is greatly minimized. Interior uses much higher quality components. Also when shopping used, it’s less likely that you will find a GX460 that’s been abused because most were driven by soccer moms and seniors. But I’m not trying to bash the 4Runner, it is indeed a very good vehicle. Merry Christmas!

      @@andybub45 Absolutely agree with your points. Both of these vehicles are really great and they had made the list when I was on the market to buy a new vehicle for my wife.
      Well both times, in 2014 and 2021, we end up buying something else. She did not like the 4Runner, and last year we bought a 21 Tundra, which has addressed our needs better. It is more powerful, the second row has enough space for two car seats for my younger kids and enough space for my son. The bed of a pickup truck is always a plus.
      Since the 4Runner, the GX460, and our Tundra are technically gas guzzlers, our second vehicle has to be way more fuel efficient and I will most likely wait for the market to calm further down to get one, but I do not have the courage to buy a 4Runner, but I am still tempted.

    I have had very good service from any of my Hondas and Toyotas. That being said, I have a Voodoo Blue 2007 FJ Cruiser. I bought it in 2015 with 81k on it. Today, it has 97k and I changed ALL the fluids and I just love driving that machine. Inside the cabin you get a most secure feeling like nothing is going to get you. I love the three windshield wipers and the extra storage box in front of the driver which looks like the passenger airbag cover. This car was equiped with every option available from the factory. The speakers in each front door are huge and even though the CD player is only single load, I have NEVER heard a better factory sound system in any vehicle. It is better than the JBL in our 2013 Avalon Limited with all factory options including the Technology Package. I am thoroughly impressed with that FJ Cruiser and if I were to replace it wiuld be a 2014 or 15 Forerunner. They are better for families than the FJ because of rear door access. I think the way the rear doors on the FJ open and seem to be on an odd hinge set up and seem to drop down is just a marvel and not seen on any other car I know of. The rack on the roof is handy and having the soare tire where you don't have to crawl under the car is a huge plus. As you probably have gathered, I LIKE TOYOTAS

    One thing about putting it in 4wd every month or so to prevent seizing (if you don’t have full-time 4wd or awd), only drive in straight lines e.g in a parking lot unless you’re on dirt or snow. Gear binding can damage the transmission if turning on asphalt in 4wd since the tires wanting to spin at different speeds will fight against the 4wd system. On dirt, the slower tire just slips instead of transferring that twisting motion to the transmission

    Just got a 2023 Limited 2 weeks ago and still have my 2008 4th Gen SR5. I don't care that it is "outdated". I know it will last me at least 15 solid years with few, if any, issues other than normal wear and tear. Apparently many others feel the same because it seems EVERYONE on the road has a 4 Runner now days. Not sure if that is good or bad. I only wish the Limited had something "more" to make it worth all the money. But in the end.....if you want one, it will cost you. Merry Christmas Amd. Your channel is THE BEST!!!

    TRD off road premium is hands down the best, I agree. Will say, I got a 2022 sr5 premium, and it’s perfect. It’s so good I can’t really see why I would need the rear locker, unless I was on a beach or doing very serious off roaring. And even then, a-trac is pretty amazing for 90 percent of those situations. It’s also way less than any trd model. And for the less money you can buy awesome tires and some cool interior accessories instead
