CLIP DESCRIPTION:
In a safety-deposit box, Bourne (Matt Damon) discovers his identity -- all six of them.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The best-selling suspense novel by late author Robert Ludlum comes to the screen for a second time, following a 1988 made-for-TV movie. Matt Damon stars as Jason Bourne, a barely alive amnesiac with a pair of bullet wounds in his back, pulled from the Mediterranean by Italian fishermen. Bourne's only clue to his own identity is a bank account number etched on a capsule implanted in his body. He quickly finds the Zurich bank where money, a gun, and a few identification documents await, but after he's pursued by security goons at the American consulate, Bourne realizes he can trust no one and offers a German gypsy named Marie (Franka Potente) ten thousand dollars for a ride to Paris. Encountering more professional killers bent on his destruction, Bourne discovers that he possesses a surprising degree of skill in combat, martial arts, and linguistics -- handy talents that clearly indicate his past includes work as a spy and assassin, but for whom? With Marie's reluctant help, Bourne edges closer to the truth, something CIA officials want concealed at all costs. The Bourne Identity co-stars Chris Cooper, Clive Owen, Brian Cox, and Julia Stiles.

The laughable irony here is that he only leaves the gun back in the box because he is panicking, afraid and freaking out but back at Treadstone when they open it, they think it's some badass, ominous message for them to find.
"he took everything but the gun? what does it mean!
- it means he's coming back to finish the job..."
@@MrLTiger 😂😂😂😂😂👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

"The Gilberto Identity" just didn't have the same ring to it.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Fun little tidbit: that's the name they page him by in the airport in Ultimatum
You win sir
👍just a different passport on top. .... and we would get a spin-off
Gilberto Gil teria sido melhor kk
The music is so underrated, it's amazing at building up the tension of just a guy putting stuff in a bag
I'VE never wanted a red workout bag like that so BADLY the adventures I could delve into !! [ yes you do know I'm referring to the contents!!] BUT bugger every major intelligence force is after my hide! even more fun !!!
all the staring faces too
It’s not jUsT a GuY it’s Jason f’ing Bourne

The feeling I had when I opened 8 email accounts in 2000 and saw them again a decade later...
Hahaha!!
bahahaha so true 😂
Lol!!
It’s been 16 years and I’m still wondering how the guy carried the box like that, put it on its side, opened it & everything was all laid out all nice and neatly organized.
.... tiny drops of glue between each item. It's Movie magic!!!
Vizzle good observation skills
It’s so simple, in the box there is no gravity as they paid some money of the budget to NASA.
The cap.. Things inside stay tight and don't make any move.
Yeah, that was funny.
I think this is the perfect movie. The European setting, Matt Damon in the role of his life, strong cameo's from big actors, the Parisian Mini car chase, a government conspiracy, the sunny ending. There's just never a dull moment
The atmosphere is pretty great
Redeeming qualities in a person.
It's really good, but in this particular moment it was funny how lazy they were for names in the passports. His russian states that his name is "qwrnjqrjqwr" literally non-sense bunch of letters :)
No matter how much money they threw at the budget of the other Bourne movies, they could never replicate the feeling this movie had. The Bourne Identity just had this raw, organic storytelling that just drew you in and wanting more. The storylines in the later movies, especially "Jason Bourne" were so convoluted and far fetched at times, just leaves you scratching your head thinking "Seriously?"
Totally agree, actually rewatched whole franchise on a weekend, 1st film just gets you immersed so much@@honeyblunt5150
One of my ultimate life goals is to have a safe deposit box like this filled with fake IDs, foreign cash, guns and stuff, so after I die, my entire family will wonder "who the hell was he?'.
Cold, calculating, and focused on the task at hand....everyone respects it from afar, but hates it up close.
The reality is that the isolation and training necessary for this type of work pulls people away from any S.O. they might have. So you end up being a bad ass, but no one cares because no one knows you.
No I am completely serious. I definitely want to have a safe deposit box filled with fake IDs, foreign cash, and guns for my family to get when I die and make them think I was some kind of spy. I never said I wanted to be a spy.
FgUoCoKgYlOeU fGuOcOkGyLoEu lol you remind me of the character played by Bill Paxton in True Lies where he pretended to be a spy so he can bed bored housewives while being a used car salesman.
FgUoCoKgYlOeU why the hell would you do that??
FgUoCoKgYlOeU : even your screen name is enough to leave people totally confused wondering who/what the hell are you. You don't need a jukebox full of goodies.
Matt Damon was so convincing in the Jason Bourne series. No wonder the James Bond franchise executives were so worried about these films!
How do you know that?
@@tilesetter1953 if you read into Casino Royale the Bond producers altered the Bond persona slightly to be more Bourneesque, plus the action in Bourne influenced the following Bond movies, plus many other action films
@@dovestones Probably true, although the persona Daniel Craig uses in the Bond movies is the most true to the character in the original books.
Jason Bourne is 100% anti-Bond. Inconspicuous, nobody knows him, doesn't rely on gadgets.
I agree though I did realize by the 3rd film that I was about done with this. He is such a lone wolf and every time there is any link at all with his character to someone else she dies. The overriding plot of Bourne is mixed up with the CIA because they want him because he was part of a super secret super soldier program works great in movie 1 and holds up in two and three but it never exactly changes and it can't sustain a whole franchise unless it evolves. I also kind of realized in the third movie that Nicky's character was, by this point the more compelling of the two - maybe because she was good but not an unstoppable super soldier... and she at least had goals.
The music in this film is fabulous. Gives me chills.
You should watch Sense8. Similar soundtrack
Ever since I saw this as a little kid, I always thought that sweater looked super comfy. Still do haha
All things considered, I think Jason handled this pretty well for having no real idea what was happening
Or who he is
thats the super soldier serum I'd say. Even when he was shot on that bridge and practically cornered, he didnt panic
One of the best spy movies. The later sequels were well written also.
I agree with you that the first three Bourne films were well made, but the one with Jeremy Renner on it was a dud. It was so bad that they had to call Matt Damon out from the cold to save the franchise. I wish they ended with Ultimatum and left it as it is.
My name is Jason Bourne..finally!

I think that is why the real identity is placed first and away from the rest.
Amazingly constructed. He first saw the innocuous side of himself in the passports and cards/ watch, then lifted up the tray to reveal the deeper, darker side of things with all the cash and guns.
How many guns?
He sells it with the facial expression when he lifts the false bottom “who the hell am i?”
0:34 That guy who unlocked bournes safe wasn't playin around, he wanted serious feedback, he's like what do you think of that are you impressed? Bourne looks at him as if to say what do you want a raise!
Don't quite your day job,
+EdWard D quit*
CHEV CHELIOS Fuck, yeah *quit. thx
He should have given him a big friggin tip.
See how everything was laid out PERFECTLY?
that's amazing considering how it was carried and not a single mess.
Honestly it looked like professionalism, the case was placed and unlocked timely, Bourne looked at the case a second too long a little anxiously, the bank man understands and a hint of a nod as he takes his leave to give the man privacy. Great scene
Nicest trash bag I've ever seen
I'm 12 so nope
+Paul Schoessling Its a burn bag. Anything flammable you want to dispose off you will put into the bag, tie the string and then the bag is collected and... well... burnt. Thats why it says "brennen" on it, it's german for burn. Its there in case you want to dispose of some documents from the box you dont want to get caught carrying on you. So yeah, it is a trash bag with the minor difference that it doesnt go into a dumpster but a furnace. Obviously it isnt his but since they get burnt anyway and this is a fancy bank they arent going to stop him from leaving with it, they probably have hundreds of them lying everywhere because they cant leave them there all day. Every time a client puts something in it it has to be exchanged otherwise the next client could look inside it.
smolkafilip good (detailed) answer.
There was an online company based in Australia selling replica Bourne Identity movie memorabilia and they had the ‘brennen’ burn bags for sale.
I was just gonna say that
In hospitals "Sharps" bags/boxes for needles, hazardous wastes and the like are also red. Both get destroyed.
i like that they took the time to use different photos for each passport
I have watched this movie a depressing amount of times and i will watch again tonight.
Can’t blame you. This is an awesome movie!
I love how everything was perfectly arranged and laid out in the box despite it being turned 90 degrees just seconds before.
When you pay that much money to safeguard your stuff, the boxes keep everything perfectly neat no matter how much they’re moved lol
? The gun and money were kept compressed in the box, and the stuff above the false bottom was not ordered, contact cases were inverted and scattered, watch was askew, and the passports were spread
@@AlyssMa7rin The stuff above the false bottom would been clumped in a heap towards the bottom (right hand side) of the container.
This bank has the warmest customer service...lol
Any bank would treat you like that, if you hired a 1st class safe. Money talks baby.
They all look like they are ready to kill.
IS THAT THE BRANIAC WHO BRINGS BANK BOX TO BOURNE. REAL LIFE GENIUS
Awan Biru yep
It's what a bank should be
Almost 20 years has been since this movie came out but still one of the best I just hope Hollywood doesn't remake it
It is a remake lol
The movie is already a remake.
@SEÑOR BEN CHANG There is very little creativity in Hollywood, so of course you can expect a remake.
Bourne legacy wasn’t all that bad
Hollywood: After all, why not? Why shouldn't I race-swap him?"
I love how Montreal Jason Bourne is wearing a turtleneck.
You should love how it smells. Sweaty, grimy, off a fishing boat. Everyone casts aspersions on these Swiss bank workers. They are being rather pleasant given the circumstances. That noise of them speaking during the scene is them finally moving away in exasperation.
It’s been 21 years and I’m still amazed at the quality of trash can liners in that bank
HANDS DOWN JASON BOURNE IS THE BEST ROLE MATT DAMON EVER PLAYED!!!
I agree
I dunno, Will Hunting was pretty amazing.
Cassandra de Lioncourt FOR A STAR TO HAVE PLAYED THEIR BEST ROLE, THEIR HAS TO B A LOT OF ACTION!
But was it Matt Damon playing Jason Bourne, or Jason Bourne in disguise as an actor named Matt Damon?

I love how Pam registers a waiting party for Bourne(Gilberto) at the airport in the ultimatum was a nice little callback/Easter egg for the Bourne nerds.
That red garbage bag... it ended up as a wrap for the hanging flower vase in Greece, at Marie's store.
Bob Saint-Clair It's a very versatile bag.
Sure, it's a Christian Dior bag.

One of the greatest trilogies ever
And then it was ruined by a 4th and 5th.
@Czterdziestysiódmy well the third movie which was The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) was actually good.
By far the best BI film. Realistic (ish), great location shots, proper character development, filmed in Europe with some proper european weather thrown in.
It also had a mystery-Detective aspect to it as we make the journey alongside Bourne. We are as lost as he is.
Actually the only BI film ;)
@simonfuller6194 - re: "BI film." Does that supposed to mean "2 parter movie?" Average reader wonders what you mean, as opposed to "bi" having another meaning.
@@criticalbil1 no it’s not
The Bourne saga is the best, never get tired of watching it.
That ominous breath sound in the soundtrack at 1:34 is so much better than having some "uh-oh" music. Beautifully judged by the composer and sound designers. It's like the rush of air when a sealed door has been opened...
It also *sounds* like the rush of adrenaline spreading through you when you cant find your wallet
@@greenleafe1238 😅
Great observation. I love the details of sound design in movies.
The best action movie of all time! Bond doesn't come close.
Im obsessed with this scene
Imagine being in his situation, no memories of who you are and basically realize you are alot of people, this would be like a nightmare.
Back when films were intresting to watch.
The acting and camerawork to make a garbage packing so intense is awesome🔥
Tha amazing thing about this scene is, imagine you try to find your identity then you find a clue to which confused you even more
Always loved the fact he had a Canadian passport. Be scared fellow countrymen.
Tyson L probably had hockey skills as well, then
He could just walk across into Canada from New York if he wanted to thousands do yearly.
Be careful, he just might not hold the door open for you.
I genuinely don’t understand why it was so hard for his organization just to reach out to him and say hey, I don’t assume just because he disappears that he’s gone rogue, he literally doesn’t know what happened, if you went and indoctrinated him back into your secret service group then he likely would retain his memories faster
Because a cheater will always think everyone is a cheater too
Well ,they were aware that the program was fragile at first, Bourne was the 1st, and they were in a way training a hitman. Biased minds delve with black and white, hence if he was not at their side, he should be now an enemy. Plus, they needed secrecy, for the programs had blurred lines of financing. A public disclosure could, as it did, send many folks to the klink.
Believe me, the intelligence community doesn't wrk lik tht ... Ppl get fcked up fr petty reasons
Well he had in fact gone rogue right before he was shot
I like the part he put the money into the bag. Feels so good .
This safe deposit box is Jason Bourne's starter pack.
I really wish they hadn't killed off Pontente. She is a great actess but must not have measured up to Hollywood's juvenile idea of cuteness. Her every reaction to the events of the movie are spot on. The ensemble lends a sense of reality so it doesn't look like a super hero flick.
I agree. What the director needed in that India cross-country race with Damon/Potente in the Land Rover was a Trekkie wearing a red-shirt. .........
......... cause everyone knows what happens to a Star Trek character caught wearing a red shirt. [initiation of a finger being drawn across the neck from ear to ear (except, of course, Scottie)].
Dave G But Marie dying was basically the basis for the plot in Supremacy.
Yeah, just like they did to Julia Styles character, Nicky Parsons.
I underrated Potente's work in this film so grossly the first time I saw it. Her acting as Marie was so damn good in this movie. Like you said, her reactions to all the craziness were exactly the way you'd expect a normal person to react.
The subsequent Bourne films lost 50% of their power when her character was killed.
Don't you love how a trained spy on the run decides to walk around with a RED BACKPACK?!!?!? LOL
I always like it when they use backpacks as trash bags. Comes in very handy.
"Leave the gun…take the samolis." o.O
Oh i miss that fat guy
1:09 Interesting fact: Jason Bourne is turning 50 this year..
Well, Matt turns 49, so...

The Gilberto De Piento Easter egg in Ultimatum is my favorite, Gilroy really loves rewarding viewers for being attentive!
I LOVED this whole movie--and this scene--as a kid. Just the tension like why the f*** do I have a gun in this security deposit box? So awesome, I'ma have to watch it again. :D

I half expected him to say, "Matt Damon"
I've never said that
1:51 The MUSIC JUST... YESS!!!
Imagine if he looked through the other passports first, then this movie would have been called Di Piento Identity.
He is not the Consul-General of Brazil, as Piento is. Recognize that the page is not in the Passport Identification standard as all the others we see are. Neither Brazil, nor any other Country just makes up the styling. That name is not inferred to be his Brazilian name, not by that display.
The last time I went to a bank to open my locker, the employees were either too casually bored to look at my face, or smiling.
Why is it that in rogue agent movies, the bank attendants look at you like you are a criminal
You have a lockbox in a bank vault? Are you a secret agent?

Happy holidays you must have earned it🙂
Donno why I love music of this movie, almost equivalent to inception, interstellar. Though this is of different genre compared to other too..
It is a pivotal moment when Jason does not take the gun. It was so important to the entire series.
Why?
@@LankyLanc03 Had Jason taken the gun, it would have been such a cliche and would have told me, that "this is just another spy movie aka James Bond."
By leaving the gun, it showed that this was a very different type of movie. It also showed the conflict and confusion within Jason. He is a trained assassin. He is incredibly proficient with firearms, and yet, at a time when perhaps he needs a firearm the most....he leaves it behind. The same happens when he is at the embassy and drops the gun in the trash.
@@LankyLanc03 probably because it signifies that he runs away from his hired assassin life
Also being caught with an unregistered firearm would probably draw more attention to himself that he doesn’t want
Great analysis.@@joeofmacabre07

I completely lost my memory for a while a few years back. Interestingly, even though I couldn't remember anyone or anything, I would still make the same decisions as if I had memory because I could feel what I would do had I had my memory. I learned that decisions are rather subconscious, based on a lifetime of habits.

There's a not a single instance in this franchise where I see Jason put contacts on or wear glasses.
They were probably all nonprescription and he doesn't have any eye problems. Contacts were probably used to change his eye color glasses were most likely used as a disguise.
In the book series, he does it frequently. He's considered such a master of disguise, he's referred to as the Chameleon.
