    Not sure why Sir Alex called Hargreaves the worst signing, He played well that entire season and he played a lot of games, I remember his very important free kick goal against Arsenal which was key in United winning the title that year, don't forget Man U won the title on the last day that year, if they had dropped points at Old Trafford against Arsenal, they might have lost out at the end. He was also great in the CL final against Chelsea, where he started the game on the right of a midfield 4 and then played on the right of a central midfield 3 when Sir Alex switched to a 4-5-1 in the second half. Hargreaves had a great first season at United. Injuries ruined his United career not lack of quality or effort.

    • @mazincool555
      @mazincool555 Před 8 lety +21

      He didn't mean his worst signing but as in his most disappointing as he was, like you said, a player and so I think Fergie was hoping he'd become a big part in his team for the next few years but probably felt Hargreaves' lack of ambition and his injuries ruined that hope.

    • @DweenieeTodd
      @DweenieeTodd Před 8 lety +19

      +Matt Josh I'll say it, as i've done for the past few years. I think in 2009 UCL final, we may have won, or still have had the same outcome and lost to Barcelona. I do feel however, a fully fit Hargreaves in that season would have made a difference to that final. Same with the 2009 - 2010 Premier League season, when we lost to Chelsea by 1 point. Once Hargreaves got injured, we lacked a proper defence midfielder. His time at Bayern served him well, in that he had great awareness of the game, and his technical ability was great. Similar to Schweinsteiger in a way (of course Schweinsteiger was converted to a CM from 2009 on wards.) I was disappointed by Fergies comments, because sure Ronaldo was the main man in 2008, but Hargreaves brought a balance to the team we lacked in 2007, when Kaka and Milan took us apart in the Semi-Final.

    • @PeterEhik
      @PeterEhik Před 8 lety +2

      +DweenieeTodd Hargreaves never played as a Defensive/Holding midfield player for Man U, he played in a midfield 4 on the right, at least that's what I remember. In the second half of the Chelsea final, I remember him playing in a Central midfield 3 once Sir Alex switched from the 4-4-2 to a 4-1-4-1 when Chelsea took hold of the game and that's pretty much how that season went, Hargreaves played a lot of games on that right side but staying very narrow cause he aint really a winger. Anyway he was a good player for Man U that year and an important part of their double winning formula, it's a shame injuries ruined his career

    As a united fan, for once I have to disagree with SAF. Owen Hargreaves was a top signing for united, just a shame his career at Old Traford was blighted by injuries. But the few games he played in that 1st season he showed us why he was worthy to wear the shirt. The only bone I have to pick with was the criticism he had for Manchester United once he joined City and maybe that was one of the reason SAF was harsh of him at the end.. But apart from that, Hargreaves was a top player and I just wish we united fans could have seen and enjoyed more of his best.

    From the way Owen Hargreaves is speaking it seems like there's a lot of stuff that was unsaid and plenty to read between the lines. It seems like Owen's camp didn't commuicate well enough with Sir Alex and Man Utd during his recovery and rehab and Owen seems to regret this. I don't know the full story, but it's a massive shame. With Scholes,Carrick and Hargreaves, Utd had the best midfield in 2008, and that's why they won the UCL. He has a lot to be proud of and it's so sad what happened to him with injuries.

    I knew very little of Hargreaves apart from when I watched him play for England. And I must say, I never saw anyone on the pitch from either team putting as much blood sweat and tears as I saw from him at any given moment. I do not for a second buy a word of what Ferguson said about him.
    This is a guy who leaves everything on the pitch, never has any media issues. Someone who I only experienced on the periphery of my football fandom but somehow had enormous respect for.

    Too much was made of Alex Ferguson's comments when his biography came out. All that is picked on is all the negative things he said. If you read the book you will see that he really just speaks truthfully and gives his honest opinion. Despite doing this he still said very positive things about the majority of people mentioned. In addition to the stuff mentioned in this video, Ferguson also said that when Hargreaves was fit he did make a massive contribution to United in the Champions League winning season, but everyone forgets to mention that. He was accused of being negative towards Beckham because he said Beckham made too much of trying to be famous, which is again true. Everyone forgets that Ferguson also wrote that he also said that Beckham was a great footballer and could have been even better if he hadn't pursued fame, does anyone really disagree with that? Despite this Ferguson goes on to say that he has to congratulate Beckham on pursuing the celebrity lifestyle and turning himself into a worldwide icon. He said he didn't think Gerrard was a top, top player which is basically him saying that he isn't up to the standard of players in his position over the years, e.g. Zidane, which again is fair enough. He didn't say he thought Gerrard was shit he just didn't rate him as world class, yet again it was blown out of proportion. Seriously, would it have been better for him to write a load of tosh that wasn't his honest opinion? He even praises Roy Keane despite all the problems the two of them have had....

    and what ferguson says about him is so so unfair and disappointing for a man of his stature. every game that he played he gave his 100%. one can easily see that if u watch him play. he dint stop running. he was always looking to create something. not many a time would a manutd fan disagree with ferguson to such an extent. signing hargreaves would have been regarded as the biggest master stroke by ferguson had he been fit. he was a crucial player.
    his contribution was immense during 2007/08 in the league and champions league. and surely he would have made the difference in 2009 final. there were a lot more disappointing signings like djemba djemba, kleberson, bellion, ANDERSON, bebe, obertan.

The best in all walks of life will have an ego more often than not. Questioning the loyalty of a man who served near 27 years at one club is bollocks. • @KibyNykraft
      @KibyNykraft Před 10 lety

      Well first you're absolutely right that AF's mentality is what gave him success, but well..Then that is not loyalty to others but himself. Let's not pretend otherwise. He wanted Man United to become loyal to him..
      Guess he never said otherwise so I don't think anybody really have a problem with that :-)
      As for Steven Gerrard, he has a much closer relation to LFC from early on ,than Sir Alex had for Man United when AF came to Old Trafford. Of course Ferguson's loyalty is to Scotland first, that is where he is from aside with his personal ambition.
      The main reason Ferguson wanted a career in Manchester was because he hated Kenny Dalglish, and Kenny was in Liverpool as a key player in the 80s, later becoming a player-manager.
      Of course Kenny defeated Alex again when the neighbour side Blackburn won the league ahead of United in the 90s, probably increasing Af's desire to give his club United the success of the region by defeating all local competitors there.
      Today I think AF will see United as his playground for so many years that he of course has a kind of loyalty to the club now, hoping for it to succeed.
      I really don't understand what Hargreaves is complaining about. He was injured and a little unlucky, we all know that. Let's also remember he was not playing for his country Canada but for England, something that I find a little weird and the lack of heart. Yeah Canada sucks big time in soccer but still it is his country.

    • @ChefGrogs
      @ChefGrogs Před 10 lety +3

      KibyNykraft All assumptions. Neither of us know why he does what he does, least his own reasoning for them. Your reasoning is far-fetched; He hated Kenny, so became manager of United so he could face Liverpool to fuel this "huge vendetta". Forgetting he could face Liverpool being a manager for any Prem club, joining a North West club has no relevance. If it did, surely he'd go for Everton to play him in a derby to prove this nonsense-idea of needing to beat whatever club Kenny was managing.
      It's a blank statement with no evidence to say his service was for his own ambition with no loyalty to the club. If you really believe that what you said is true, you can apply that to any manager and player. Nobody is loyal unless you have a Liver Bird on your chest, right?

First and foremost, he is the best footballer to have come out of Canada, I have watched him since he was a teen. And any Canadian/UK citizen would jump at the opportunity to play proper football and not hockey on the world stage and is impressive in it's own right seeing the state of football(soccer) in Canada. As for the messed up accent, it is not uncommon. Those of us Canadians that are brought up in British households, have the same strange accent. It is because we learned to speak from our parents in our formative years. The accent changes, depending who we speak with, there is nothing fake about it.

I also think the reason Ferguson has been so critical of Hargreaves is because he accused United's medical staff of negligence after he left. Anybody who has criticised Ferguson or United was on the receiving end of criticism in the autobiography. Ferguson's a very touchy man.

    Owen was a great signing and player for Utd it's a terrible shame what happened with his injuries he would've enjoyed many years of success with the club. Sir Alex is a legend but to say that about Owen after all he had been through was not right.

      +Owen Waite Haha. It sounds strange, but nice and soft-spoken to listen to #OwenHargreaves
