People seem to forget how good Michael Owen was in his prime.
The problem was he didn't reach his prime, that is why people don't regard in the same way as some other players. He had about 3 years where he was amazing, then got a run of hamstring injuries at Liverpool, and was never the same again, that electric pace had gone, and the problem with a player like Owen is that pace was half his game, and with that gone he was nothing special.
somename99 agreed but he didn’t do too badly if the worst injury (which was in 99), I mean he won the Balon D’Or in ‘01. But agree that the accumulation of his injuries did ruin our best young player which is so sad.
No we don’t
somename99 silly to say he was nothin special without his pace, he’s still had more ability than most strikers in the world, easily the best goal scorer I’ve ever seen play for Liverpool, he’d have went down as one of England’s all time greats if he didn’t have his injury problems
Cameron Connor I was such a huge Owen fan but best goal scorer for Liverpool? Big shout considering Fowler (not great for England but amazing for Liverpool), Rush, Torres, Suarez and Salah?!
"I was born fast" has got to be one of the coolest comments I've ever heard lol

@@iganpparamarta8813 yeah but R9 lasted more though, he beat his injuries when he was younger

Using what is normally a funeral eulogy for someone tragically dying at a young age for a multi millionaire footballer whose career ended slightly prematurely due to a dodgy hamstring. Okay then.

He won Balon d Or in the Era of, Figo, Ronaldo, Zidane, Rivaldo, Henry, Shevchenko. Simply Amazing
Very good comment brother.
Lol I wonder if owen knows how much the African streets really loved him. Liverpool is most definitely the biggest team to my elders in Africa. I swear we are still wearing his shirts and speak his name with big respect.

I’m a Liverpool fan and have never hated him. It disgusts me how vague people are because they hated him. Prejudged him without knowing the truth,

I still remember his goal against Argentina in 1998.
I remember in his early Liverpool days when Owen was nipping around players as if they wasn't there. I don't think people realize the phenomenal pace he was blessed with. His natural goal scoring instinct and this incredible pace was an absolute nightmare for any defender.
Had he not suffered from these injuries I firmly believe he would have scored well over 70 goals for England and be considered the best striker in the world for a number of years. Such a shame his ability was severely hindered at such a young age.
He scored 40 goals for his country.. and he got injured in international games.. no one should doubt owen's passion for the game
During his Newcastle career, at one point he had more apps for England than Newcastle.
Plenty of people should doubt it, especially Newcastle fans.
Every single newcastle fan does doubt his passion for the game
Fascinating and credit to his frankness and honesty. He was amazing in the World Cup and those goals will always be remembered. Superb for Liverpool as well.
He was amazing when he was younger at Liverpool. Wont forget how fast he was and the goals he scored.
Youngest player to 100 premier league goals, that says enough.
Yakubu is still only 18
I think one of the key examples of an English player who's injuries wasted him would have to be Daniel Sturridge. He used to be arguably one of the fastest, skillful and most clinical strikers in the premier league and injuries just destroyed him. Such a shame
He seems to have adapted a bit from from ive seen. I can see him getting 15 goals this season. With the cups etc. and even 10 in prem if he gets a chance.

Michael Owen is a legend. I only remember the great things he did on the pitch, and the later stuff I understand it of a guy that couldn't do it anymore, but, boy, what a player when he could!
That 97th miniute winner in the manchester derby will remember him for that
No doubt about that! Ironic that to win the PL, RVP and Owen had to go to their biggest rivals!
Retro Rube 😂😂😂 as a Utd fan I love it
Biggest robbery ever
And this is one of the realities of being a professional athlete and goes to show how fragile the life can be. Owen’s a sensible guy, and although clearly frustrated with the last few years of his career, was wise enough to modify his game and still do very well from it.
Totalavulsion Cristiano Ronaldo took a good cue from Owen’s career and adapted his game to be a potent poacher. It’s a short career. Owen was very humble in describing his frustration. I duff my cap to his honesty.

Unbelievably sad. I think of all the players who have suffered through similar.
An incredibly honest and transparent interview. Well done Mr Owen
Owen was the reason I got into football, I'll never forget how good he was.
Same, when I started, I fancied Owen so much and I was nicknamed Owen and I was ecstatic about it. Because I was really fast and score plenty of goals, even in my late teen years where I became a left back and still manage to grab goals. Now not a player anymore, but still remember the times where Owen was my nickname for a good 3 years. And on top of that, I won the 100m gold medal the year I started playing so it solidifies my legacy as Owen
@@mackovo6 wait what
Michael Owen's is a story of terrible misfortune. I remember seeing him injure his hamstring at Leeds, and he was never the same player since. He still could finish, and had a Linekeresque knack of being in the right place at the right time, hence so many headers from such a short striker. But the one thing he relied on throughout his youth had deserted him and he was still expected to produce the goods. I also feel bad that he left Liverpool for Real Madrid so that he could win the Champions League, and that season Liverpool won the Champions League and he was a bench player for Real. He wasn't even given a fair shot at Real, because Ronaldo and Raul were there, and any manager who benched an uninjured Raul was shortly thereafter sacked, such was the cult around that guy.
I sincerely hope people don't forget just how incredible Michael Owen was, for England especially. Before Rooney came onto the scene, it was literally a Beckham-to-Owen partnership that took us to tournaments. Those two worked so well together. I feel Rooney will be remembered for his longevity, enthusiasm, heart, records and skill, and that Owen will only become a footnote, but that, to my mind, is grossly unfair. Owen, in his day, was unstoppable.

Arsenal fan here-my most vivid memory of Owen is the 2001 FA Cup Final. His equaliser was an instinctive finish in the box and the winning goal was a blistering run and clinical strike. Those two goals summed him up perfectly. At his best, he was a magical player.
But it wasn't worthy of Ballon D'Or!! Bayern and Valencia reached the 2001 final and Bayern won. Had any other team won the title, their start player would have won it. ... For reasons I don't understand, they voted for Owen.

Until he had a run of hamstring injuries and then he was never the same again, which for a player that had relatively little to his game that loss of that amazing pace really was a killer blow.
That's it. Robbie Fowler was even more electrifying. He was also a far superior footballer than Owen.
nolls14 better technically, but no where near as electric! I prefer Fowler, because he was the ‘local lad done good’, had a great football mind and was most natural finisher I have ever seen, but Owen was an absolute electric freak and did it in the International stage. Always scored in big tournaments and when it counted. That last 20 seconds broke me.
I had my hamstring in my left leg ruptured, 5 years ago in August. Playing "social" indoor football. Couldn't walk for a month, without painkillers for 3 months and couldn't run for 6 months. I missed half a season plus summer, and the whole next season before I even tried training again.
It hurts, because I know I've lost yards of pace and turning control, because I refused at 26 to have a knee/thigh reconstruction surgery. I took the long rehab route. I still play club football, but shifted to wing back instead of wing. I just can't run around guys anymore and get into those pockets.
I can't imagine how he would have felt. His livelihood, slowly ran away from him. Especially after that ACL injury at 06 World Cup. I was amazed he kept going in top flight leagues afterwards.
