Listening to these stories about Sir Alex and his staff is pretty depressing, I still think Jose can do great things at the club. But it does feel like the club has lost its soul. True story. I met Scholes a few times as his uncle was a local at the pub across the road from my house (where my parents were locals) his name was Keith Shard. I remember Keith turning up at my house on my birthday with a card. I’d just got the new United shirt with Scholes on the back, he was my childhood idol. Keith took me to the United vs Arsenal game l, but before that he took me to Scholes’s house and the first thing his wife Claire said to me, a young boy turning up to her house was: ‘Want a brew?’ To this day I am still shook at how down to earth they were. I then went to play Arron on fifa street. Arron was about 8 at the time (Paul’s Son)
    RIP Keith, I’ll never forget what that man did for me and so many avid football fans in my village. A truly magnificent man. I have a signed shirt from Paul and so many pictures with him.
    Believe it or not too, he was quiet even in person, Paul Scholes is the most genuine down to earth man I have ever met and for someone worth millions from being a footballer it doesn’t add up, but it’s just because he had one passion and that was it. Football.

  • @milton9013
    @milton9013 Před 6 lety +113

    Scholes looks like the young Sir Alex now; his chilling humor and warm smiles are soothing.
    Though I appreciate his humbleness as much as his football genius, it becomes hard to explain to new generations of fans how great he was. I mean, those amazing long pass and long shot compilations on youtube are great, but hardly adequately reflect the immense presence and quality he provided week in and week out in the United midfield. This man was on his own level above others in the league. Hopefully he'll bring the insights and experience to the managerial position soon.
    Lastly I want to pay tribute to Hargreaves as well, who possessed special qualities which many fans tend to overlook. Owen would've helped United achieve more trophies if not for the sustaining injuries. The penalty he smashed in during the dire moment of shootout in the UCL final, and the performance in the England shirt against Portugal, deserve to be remembered.
    Happy New Year!

    • @FuckFeminists
      @FuckFeminists Před 6 lety +3

      I couldnt have put it better myself...very well said! And yes Hargreaves was a player of real, genuine quality. He and also Darius Vassel appeared and disappeared around the same time didnt they? Both just sort of vanished!
      SAF, for me, undid his genius in the later years, with the emotion-based sackings of his legends, but also by failing to vet a successor to Paul Scholes, who was at the centre of Manchester's success. He mustve known, surely, that Giggs and Scholes would retire someday, and that Bale and a local Scholes successor (sure, maybe not As good) would be neccessary in the future. But he didnt find anyone to take over anywhere on the field! (Except De Gea).

    • @milton9013
      @milton9013 Před 6 lety +5

      Thanks! I think Sir Alex did very well until the end, and constantly adapted our tactics into a very promising direction. Let me enumerate some additional points without putting them into a time sequence. Some of them would be quite brief, as I think we should know the details well enough.
      1. The financial situation of the club was not optimal at the time, as in our spending power was quite limited.
      2. Barcelona was indeed a dream team, we fought well against the genius of Messi and Iniesta, and lost fairly twice in UCL finals. However, reaching finals three times in four years was still a great achievement.
      3. Paul's successor: Luka Modric. Gaffer absolutely loves Modric, and we didn't secure his service. (I can be mumbling for hours on this one). Bale was not essential, Modric was. Fans tend to mourn over Bale since he is from Welsh as Giggs, but we couldn't afford him at 100M evaluation. When he chose Spurs over United after exiting Southampton, we had already missed him. Plus at that time we were not at (and we still are not) in good terms with Levi. Anyway we should've landed Modric at all cost.
      4. The development of Cleverley, Anderson, and Welbeck didn't quite meet expectations. They were actually quite good at that stage, but missed the timing of excelling themselves, due to injuries or lack of that spark of talent. But we've seen clearly Sir Alex knew his players so well, knew how much potential these young lads could achieve, and fully believed in them. He also said Evans and Lingard would mature at a later age than their peers.
      5. Evolving tactics: acquiring van Persie and Kagawa. Those two acquisitions were very interesting, pointing the direction we're going into if Sir Alex didn't retire. (By the way, personally I rated Kagawa very highly.)
      I'll continue on these points later.

    I knew that Scholes always had that United mentality when he scored that screamer against Barcelona in the CL semi final. That attempt required great confidence and an attacking mindset. The man who set up others time and time again had the belief in oneself that he was worthy to try such an audacious attempt. When I saw how much space he had I hopefully shouted “shoot” at the telly, to my surprise, he did just that. The rest is history.
