So glad that I didn’t cancel my preorder! Black levels are good with no signs of crushing; you can still see detail in darker areas. HDR looks good although at times slightly bright but still looks very good. Color grading looks better than my Blu-ray copy.
Film grain is also handled nicely on the 4K; minimal grain but it still feels like you’re watching film. No apparent DNR has been used. Definitely happy that I bought it! Can’t wait to watch it again on my friends 4K proctor and see how it looks on it. Equipment : Panny UB420 and Hisense 58” 58R6E3 TV.
Glad you're seeing what I'm seeing. Some others have missed the mark on this one.
Solid improvement over the bluray and considering the fact that it was only $16 shipped from GRUV there's not much to complain about.
This is definitely the most positive review I've seen for this transfer. Even The Digital Bits gave it a very poor image review today. This is hugely disappointing that the studio would not do a proper negative scan for the 4k.
Got my steelbook yesterday. I was expecting to be disappointed but, it looked excellent on my sony a80j. I didn't really get the criticism, There were maybe a few softer scenes, mostly on faces, but that may have been done on purpose by QT. The color was great and overall, I give it an 8.5 out of 10.
Good to see a more positive view of this 4K. Glad I ordered special edition from Zavvi. Thanks
I canceled my preorder because Films at Home said this release was exceptionally poor and he even included a link to the standard blu-ray and instructed people to buy that one instead. And now this review makes it seem like it is actually fairly solid. I can see different people having different opinions, but this is an absurdly large difference.
I respect both views but ultimately I love the movie and it comes down to what I think about it the quality. There review is just a baseline.
Stop listening to films at home. He's not always right. I cannot believe people take every word he says as gospel. It's a very subtle upgrade over the bluray. But films at home said certain sections are DVD quality which is utter BS.
What I learned about this transfer on CZcams is wait for a sale to purchase. I’ll get it, but not at full price
Don't listen FAH, people who knows about transfers didn't respect his reviews
@@jorgeiramain Yeah he is out to lunch on some of them. I respect him and his opinion though. I really have nothing against the guy. But some people following him blindly is ridiculous.
Thanks, Adam, I've been waiting on this review. I typically agree with you the most out of all of the reviewers out there so I guess it's time to re-order this since i had canceled my preorder. I normally wouldn't bother upgrading a title with no audio upgrade and a wide variety of opinions when it comes to picture quality but this is one of my favorite movies. I want to own the best version of it regardless of how divisive of a release it is. I put a lot of stock in your reviews. Thanks, sir.
Now I am totally sure I’ll go for it, thanks Adam!
Glad to see a good review since it's a favorite movie of mine
Very good review. I was expecting disaster and was pleasantly surprised. It’s not the best 4k but is very good. I watched this on my Panasonic which supports HDR10+ and I had to tone down the brightness a little bit because in my opinion HDR was a little bit too “aggressive “ but still very good.👍
I just bought this today but unfortunately the 4k disc doesn't work for my Panasonic 4k Player xD
Adam, isn’t it possible to make public debate with Jeff concerning the quality of this 4k blue ray?
This is in my top 2 for Tarantino movies actually behind Pulp Fiction. I love it!! I've been on the fence about this 4k because reviews have been mixed. Would you say that the HDR is the strongest upgrade of this disc?
The HDR isn’t “wow, melt your eyeballs” but it’s application makes the film richer all around to me.
@@MovieGuy365 Ok thanks!! Good to know.
SAME
It's a subtle improvement over the bluray. Nothing more nothing less. But yes this is the BEST it's ever looked since that is your question.
I’m surprised Tarantino didn’t make this release the best it could be
He's not into such stuff, he promotes theatrical experiences and CZcams public domain movies
No DTS X remix so sale
I hate the disc layouts .get scratched so easy .
It's a real shame they didn't do a proper restoration and didn't rescan the original film negative in 4K.
Idk if it’s because it was either
1. Shot digitally in 2K
2. Shot in 35mm that was downscaled to 2K
@@jordanmillraney5481 It was shot on 35mm with a 2K DI for special effects (as usual). But they could have rescanned at 4K and remastered the 2K special effects, as other 4K restorations have done. It would have cost a lot more of course
Weird that other reviews say that it's a terrible transfer. Too dark, muddy and that the blu-ray was actually better. One of the few 4k movies they say the blu-ray actually looks better. Not sure what the deal is.
From what I’ve heard, some are getting hung up on the upscale factor. The movie looks fine to me, saying it’s worse then the blu-ray, it isn’t even remotely true in my opinion.
I mean films at home trashed this transfer and from what I've watched of him, he doesn't seem to be the guy to really care if it's upscaled or not. I mean he mentiones whether it is or if it's original negative but I don't see him complain about it if it looks good.
@@NYC_Goody he's hit and miss. I rarely trust film at Holmes reviews I look at them for what they are look at other people's opinions and then formulate my own based on whose opinion is most consistently similar to my opinion and unfortunately film at homes is not consistent with my opinion so I take his reviews with a cup of salt
Ya I love this movie, so I was pretty disappointed with the other reviews. I'll probably buy it now and see for myself based on this review.
@@McLovin-kg1if he seems more like a casual movie watcher than some obsessed critic. Same with me. I watch them casually and just want em to look good.
This is the only positive review I have seen
nope been lots of other positive reviews
Spare Change gave it a positive review
It’s in my top ten favorite films of all time, but this release just screams cash grab to me. They didn’t go to the original 35mm camera negative. It’s an upscaled 2K DI. Same audio as the bluray. I’m going to speak with my wallet this time and not buy it. I’m tired of substandard 4K releases and I’m not going to spend $20 on a lazy release. I spent that same money on The Green Knight which actually had a 4K DI and looked fantastic
A 35mm or 4K finish does not exist for this one. It was finished in 2K and then printed for 35mm for theatrical run. So there is no OCN for the finished film. They would have to go to the film elements and put it all back together as well as the vfx and whatnot which is pretty unheard of outside some very big titles that are a sure sell. That shit is super expensive. So there really isnt a better source available. Please ppl don't skip this for ridiculous reasons.
@@tuc0339 I mean it’s not ridiculous. I could say don’t skip Terminator 2, it’s 4K, it’s awesome, totally go and buy it at full price. But that wouldn’t be a good idea
@@Tomhyde098 Yes well T2 is a whole different conversation and is not a good example at all to make your point.
@@tuc0339 My original point was that I'm not going to spend money on a half assed 4K release. Why even do a 4K release if it's just a 2K upscale? For money. So I'm not going to waste my money when the blu-ray will be good enough.
I think some people are putting too much emphasis or importance on if a UHD is an upscale or native 4K. As a long time collector of the 4K UHD format, I’ve discovered that an upscale 2K DI can, even if you strip away the HDR, outshine the 1080p blu-Ray in detail.
In my opinion, upscaled UHD can look impressive and adding the benefit of HDR, is in fact what makes the format top tier in the physical media space.
Universal not providing, or able to, utilize a full 4K native image, for whatever reason which I won’t go into here, shouldn’t deter you from picking up this release. Their is an upgrade here, no doubt.
Too washed out.
