I'm gonna keep my Criterion and instead buy myself two slices.
With extra cheese
@@vrsuarez1 Extra cheese is $2
Fantastic review! This is definitely something that I'm really looking forward to next month!
I just bought the Criterion not too long ago. Definitely has me crossed on how I feel about Criterion not releasing 4k yet.
Thanks for doing this great work, super helpful
Great review Jeff, lookong forward to watching this.
This isn't one I would rush out and buy, but it's good to know which one to get if I decided I want it. Excellent review as always.
Ruby Dee has been in film for a long long time...:-)
If I already owned the Criterion Blu Ray I probably would not bother upgrading, but I do not own the movie at all, so I will definitely go right to the 4K. I don’t want this 4K master downscaled to a lower quality format on the Criterion Blu Ray, I want the BEST quality/format possible. Criterion is really missing out and falling behind with not going into 4K, more and more of their movies on Blu Ray are being released in 4K elsewhere, which makes me want to get the 4Ks rather than the Criterion Blu Rays...
Awesome flick. Wynn Thomas the set designer said the pizza place looked so real people would try to stop and buy pizza. I studied with Spike Lee Filmworks at LIU Brooklyn 90-94. They shot the Michael Jordan Nike commercials in our school gym. In class we watched it on vhs. When I asked Spike he told me letterbox would not add anything lol
I saw this film Opening Day in NYC. When silly-ASS Movie Critics were warning movie-goers to stay away from it for fears of rioting. And telling people to see Tim Burton's "BATMAN" instead.
I still have the CRITERION LaserDisc Deluxe Edition. I couldn't part with it (along with other CRITERION LDs I own) when I moved back to NYC over 17 years ago.
I was planning on getting the CRITERION Blu-Ray whenever the company (and Barnes & Noble) have their next sale.
But I really like the look of that TARGET SteelBox.
And the transfer is true 4K.
Decisions.
Decisions.
Great Review.
Thank you for your insight!
The fire hydrant scene looks amazing on this release. I wish they’d release more movies from the 80s and 90s. Seems like we’re only getting like 2 uhd releases a month. With hollywood not doing much, it’s a perfect opportunity to sell updated old titles.
Thanks for this review, this is one of my fav films, I have the criterion blu and I think il stick with that and not upgrade. I did think that this 4k won't show all that much difference and that's saved me some money also. Great review
Love this movie and really liked your review. It would be hard for me to justify more than $20. I have a 4K projector and 7.1.4 setup and agree with your conclusion. Thanks Jeff.
Best Spike Lee Movies... Malcolm X, Get on the Bus, Inside Man
Inside Man is criminally underrated.......
I preordered Zavvi edition. Thanks for the review!
Like the new beard look. Good review bro.
Could you tell me whether the standard Blu Ray that is included is the old Universal or the new 4k restoration please? Thanks!
Is there a filmmaker whose body of work you want in 4K? For me it would be either Terry Gilliam or David Cronenberg.
David Fincher or Tarantino
David Lynch in 4K with Atmos would be amazing. All we’ve gotten in 4K is Elephant Man and a bit of Twin Peaks.
@@JeffRauseo yep. Lynch, Fincher, Tarantino, Kurosawa, Tarkovsky, and more Coen 4K releases need to happen.
Love all your suggestions but you have to add Scorsese into the mix.
Cronenberg for sure, but top of my list is Fincher. His black levels demand it.
One of my all time favorites. Of course normally I’d be inclined to buy the 4K, but I’ve already got the Criterion, and it’s even signed by Spike... not sure the double dip is worth it. I might get it on a sale just for the sake of collecting though.
I have a signed one as well!
@@jacobbeeson2983 how'd you get it signed
Spike Lee will sign them through his merch shop
Universal titles usually go on sale pretty often!! Might just wait for a discount!
I get this is the movie Spike Lee is most known for but Malcolm X is my favorite of his and I hope that gets the 4k treatment too.
Show me you have good taste in movies, without saying you have good taste in movies
Criterion really needs release his stuff in 4K UHD!
1 year later they do, the will re-release this in 4K UHD?
Classic flick - interesting cover art
i have the thing on arrow. wow just saw kong trailer roll on july for 4k release
Never really loved this movie myself but the quirky artwork on the steelbook is pretty dope.
Totally agree
Same
I’ve heard Spike Lee is pretty overrated. But even people who don’t like his stuff say that Malcolm X and Do the Right Thing are pretty good.
@@MCCrleone354 Give it a chance. Even if Spike Lee’s personality can rub some the wrong way, this is an iconic film. Surprisingly funny and entertaining as well as intensely dramatic.
@@MCCrleone354 Inside Man is a great heist movie, too.
Hi, Jeff! That was a great review! “Do the Right Thing” is one of my favorite films! Even though I own it on the original Blu-ray, I can’t decide between buying the Criterion Collection or the 4K Blu-ray, for upgrading purposes. Can anyone advise me, please?
I had to double dip on parasite because criterion came out later loaded with special features, but not on this i am with my criterion bluray
I have the Criterion version, but this has Spanish audio, and that does it for me.
Does this new release include the music videos? If I recall, the 2009 universal release did not include them, but the criterion release is due.
My preference lies with the Criterion because the booklet is one of their best. It’s contains Spike Lee’s notes that he wrote when making the film.
what is up with criterion holding out on 4k????
Short Cut DTS X remix is alone the main reason for this UHD
Need Spikes SOS in 4K next.
It’s Disney so no chance
My scenario: I like collecting Criterion, but if the picture looks a little better, I might prefer 4k. Is the picture noticeable enough to pass over criterion?
Is the blu ray remastered as well? inside steel book
Pls review the akira 4k uhd
That Steelbook is SO sexy!
i wish my girlfriend didn’t make me get rid of my 4k tv. now i’m paying off a 4k player for no damn reason.
but also i watched kill bill on hbo max because it said HD so i had a feeling it was i guess like the blu-ray scan. it was the first time i ever saw kill bill in anything other than dvd quality (never saw in theatres) and it was gorgeous! of course i watched it on my phone, so idk what it looks like on a tv (obviously, since i don’t have one anymore) but it was like watching it for the first time, and i hope that we start getting tarantino 4k’s
@@TheMobCultVideo why would get rid of it...
Why get rid of the 4K tv...?
Maybe get rid of the girlfriend?
@@JoseChavez-rf4ul this man gets it
I actually don't like the "right" color scheme here. It is very bright and doesn't look natural. I looked at the screengrabs in the review at dvdbeaver and if I hadn't known the preference of the director I would have probably selected the 2009 release as the best version.
The irony is that I have the Criterion in my backlog so I may fast track finally watching that one to check out how it looks myself. Maybe it isn't so bad in motion.
Easy fix: Sell the criterion edition because collectors pay extra for those. Buy the cheap edition of the 4K, not the steelbook. Boom, max image quality at no loss.
Or just keep what you have and torrent the max quality version (;
sometimes the 1st edition 4K with a slipcover ends up being more valuable than the steelbook.
@@RSxLime so then you don’t get max quality 😂
@@BB-ed4om in what world?
Have to disagree. Having the criterion and then picking up the 4K; the universal disc is way more fine detailed and has a superior picture quality.
Criterion is just burning money making over priced special features discs while other companies are doing what people want...True full 4K on a format that will actually use all that information.
You have a great channel but tbh I cannot stand that opening music
A stone classic.
The trend of this review, if you don't have the criterion do the right thing
We never see the inside or the cover of the steelbook !! Crazy ! Wtf ????
How much is it?
$19.99. The Criterion Collection blu ray costs $39.99 at retail price
@@smithfan22 Thank you!!
Spike Lee’s intro commentary was so weak, I thought he would really say something. It was pretty much “this movie is still relevant thanks for watching”
Eh, fuck it. I'll double dip. I don't really do it that often so this might be worth it. I'll still play my hand with the discount options, but I'm not sweating it that hard.
What's this about physical media fans of Tik Tok? How does that work?
Tik Tok is just another social media app. I’m trying to spread the word about physical media over there
I’m good with the Criterion, I cold care less about 4K anytime soon 👍🏼
Here’s how I look at it: do I want to purchase Criterion and support a boutique company or buy the 4K steelbook and support Universal? That alone keeps me buying Criterion over any big company releases. I’ll give the steelbook credit, the art is dope asf, but so is the Criterion’s. As for picture, do I really think that a film from pre 2000 can really boast a 4K upgrade and tickle me any? Not really. 4K for me is meant to push detail to the limit and movies that old have inherent limitations that a rescan just can’t overcome. Happy to see that the steelbook has extras though. Am I a criterion fanboy, eh hardly.
Well if you want 4k and want more of them I would buy that. I don't worry about the company. As for 4k not providing any benefit on pre 2000s movies, watch the Wizard of Oz on a 4k disc, compare it to the 1080p, then get back to me.
Get The Professional on 4K and you might change your mind.
the pre 2000s 4k scan got some of yall hot and bothered. Let me rephrase: I am always looking for the sharpest image from a 4k scan. I am way more impressed by a super sharp image than one that is way better than it used to be. Take the imax shots from Dark Knight or something of the sort. That is what i want to pay for. I absolutely recognize the enhancements to old movies (I have wizard of oz in 4k steelbook) can be significant, but the image itself is still relatively "fuzzy"-ish. I don't care too much about 4k for movies that are still "fuzzy". I like movies and have 70 4k movies so please dont kill me over this thank you!
Still call this film the worst film I've ever seen. Not sure what I think about the attention it gets
Brony that deems a civil rights movie as the worst he’s ever seen. Something tells me you’re not the most stable minded white man
There are definitely films that are considered to be the best that I don't like as well. Just curious... what do you feel are a few of the best films you've ever seen? Pulp Fiction? The Godfather? Citizen Kane? Seven Samurai? M?
@@michaeldeforbes2401 Pulp Fiction and The Godfather are definitely some. Haven't watched Citizen Kane yet, but it's on my bucket list. Some films I consider masterpieces are A Clockwork Orange, The Big Lebowski, Psycho, Pink Floyd's The Wall, Coraline,The Texas Chainsaw Massace, Goodfellas, and many others.
@@langundovitale1305 Thanks. These are all great movies listed here!
@@michaeldeforbes2401 Thanks!
Thanks captain obvious...obviously it would be better than Criterion...they only have dvd and blu ray releases...if and when Criterion comes out with 4k's let's have this conversation again
