    Arrow didn't do this upgrade. It was done by Koch Media for their German release and Arrow just licensed it for their release.

    Arrow didn't do the transfer for Dune. Koch Films did. That said, I think the transfer is fantastic and much better than the original Blu-ray.:)

      Absolutely right. The new master's was commissioned by Koch Films, which I am glad of too. Koch Films has postponed their Dune releases to mid-October because some of the bonus material did not yet meet Koch Films' quality standards. The Ultimate Collectors Edition with all available cuts is going to be epic. It will be the only release that includes all the cuts. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the two Arrow releases in advance, simply for the sake of completeness.

    The stereo track is DTS-MA (lossless not uncompressed). Also, when it comes to the original theatrical release, IMDB does say it had 6 track Dolby Stereo 70mm print (sort of a precursor to Dolby Surround). During that era, a given theater could have anywhere from a 35mm mono presentation to 70mm 6 track. Star Wars was one of the early 6 track Dolby Stereo presentations. It was Dolby's way of having cleaner discrete channels for a left and right, several center channels, and allowed for one rear surround. It could be delivered either optically on a 70mm blow up (one of the main reasons it was delivered 70mm), or magnetic tape. Also keep in mind that in a theater, one channel can be an array of speakers on one wall: Atmos has changed this in which there's "objects" that can deliver different sounds to each speaker in that array.
    Even though Arrow did a lot for this release, I'm not interested because it's the theatrical version and not the (universally better received) extended cut.

      @frodo322 Před 2 lety +1

    Huge fan of this film. Love the books and the Lynch film is a guilty pleasure. Have not seen it for a while however but have been holding off for this 4k release. For this one I splurged and ordered the Zavvi exclusive deluxe version which apparently has now shipped so can't wait to get that and watch it.... I'll probably watch it with my son who is now old enough to appreciate older classic films and he should enjoy this. We've been going through the Arnie catalog so far and he's been loving those! 😁. Agree the Blu ray is fantastic as it is but for this film I really wanted a premium edition and all those informative special features and can't wait to also dig into those. Great vid Jeff! PS won't be long before you and your son will also be watching classic films together..!! Trust me bro... It goes REALLY REALLY quickly! Enjoy every moment!

    I got the deluxe steelbook edition with the Blu-Rays and the art book. The only thing I don’t like about it is the steelbook art is the same as the box art. I always reverse the case art so I get different art than the box, but that’s a small complaint. It’s beautiful and CHUNKY!

    Old Universal Blu-Rays are pretty notorious for their DNR, edge enhancement, and messy grain structures. It would seem that they weren't terribly aggressive on that old Dune disc.

    • @shanerollins3736
      @shanerollins3736 Před 3 lety +2

      Most of their old HD-DVD and Blu-ray releases were just their old DVD transfers upscaled from 480i to 1080p, smothered in DNR and EE, and then plopped on a disc. Fortunately most of them have been replaced.

      As should anyone who loves movies or Frank Herbert, and unlike you, I'm not being facetious. I read Dune in high school soon after it was published, long before the reviewer, and all or most of the commenters, were born. I've reread it many times and it's a great novel. I had forgotten how profoundly awful this film was (I saw it in a theater when first released) until I streamed it about a year ago. Given its enormous (at the time) budget, this movie is, dollar for dollar, arguably the worst ever made. It's a genuine achievement of sorts for so many talented people to be given this much money and great source material and generate something this jaw droppingly bad. It's almost impossible for the new movie not to be an improvement; I'm looking forward to seeing it in 4K Dolby Vision on HBOMax.

    • @chrisjfox8715
      @chrisjfox8715 Před 3 lety +3

      @@marlowe1537 I actually enjoy the film, but "to be fair" to David Lynch, he's really not the right director for a film like this. He's a cryptic artistic director known for small town films. It's amazing that he was ever even offered the opportunity.
      As for the whole "unlike you" thing, I think sometimes hardcore fans of source material are in a position where you're so wrapped up in whether an adaptation captures everything about the source that you can't step back well enough to appreciate it for what it is. I'm not knocking that perspective, just stating the reality. No, I've never read the books..but I enjoy the film.

Dune was the first movie I ever saw as a kid in the movie theater. I had no damn clue about what was happening. I think I was 5 or 6 years old but I loved it. My mom got me some of the toys and I had the book with the cassette. I love this movie even though it's extremely flawed. For me this was the first exposure to both Dune and Lynch. So it still has a special place in my heart, despite the flaws, I still think its a very decent 80s sci fi film with excellent practical effects. Read the books much later. Same for Lynch's work, took decades for me to get into his brand of creativity. Hindsight is always 20/20, but it still puts me into the mindset of my childhood enjoyment.

    The original Dune had a 70mm release with 6-track Dolby sound so the 5.1 might be close to that original mix. Technical-wise, it looks good, with tons of features & paraphernalia. But story-wise?? I assume this is the same movie that was released theatrically in 1984, or a very very close variant. That means this was the 2.25-hour cut that was heavily critiqued & confused audiences, hence the sheet handout given to theater-goers (I still have my copy of the handout). I myself was not confused, for I had read the novel the year before, in 1982-83, before watching the Lynch Dune in 1984. So, if I had my say, I would have had Arrow use the Spicediver Alternative Redux Cut, which already has its own 4k upscale version. To explain, the 3-hour Spicediver version, from 2012, is considered the best Dune cut out there so far, whether made by a studio or a fan, because it gets the story a little clearer, much closer to the novel, as well as adding another 45-60 minutes of unused footage to help exposit the adapted book story onto screen. Of course, you cannot license the Spicediver 4k Dune, because it is a fan-made cut & infringes original licensing & copyrights. But that would have been my choice if I had that kind of power.

    To be honest I probably would not have like Lynch's Dune. I LOVE Dino DeLaurentiis's Dune. I've seen so many "Directors Cuts" that don't add anything to the film and in some cases detract (see Leon), and while in a lot of the cases they don't have anything to do with director (see Leon, theatrical cut is the director cut) most of the time the cut you see is better (concise, streamlined), but with Lynch disowning this film and they fact I love it, I have to give this to the producer. Conan the Barbarian is god level film...
    I also don't like the TV series, loads more time and do so little with it.
    This isn't meant as click bait and if you like series I'm jealous, wish I could.
    My only fear of new Dune is I don't see how you can do a PG version, but director is a fucking wizard, so we'll see 🤔

    ARE YOU GOING TO REVIEW 4K UHD OF "THE THING" (1982)? I bought it but do not want to open yet until I hear how DTS:X is.

    Despite this being 24 bit padded, the 5.1 track of Arrow retains all the dynamic range as the old Universal track without being clipped (as the old Universal is) and other 5.1 tracks among other BDS, also compared the newest AUS 5.1 and it's even worse than old Universal BD/Arrow. Also includes true og stereo audio. My guess FiM put the tracks as 24 bit not to cause uproar or some dumb reviewers thinking 24 bits is everything...

    Hey @Films At Home I am very new to the channel. I have my first 4k TV being delivered on Thursday (Samsung QN95a, IJ am in England and got this for Ps5 gaming mainly). Back in the day I had a few hundered DVDs but when blu-ray came out I didn't want to rebuy all my movies again, sounds like the same thing is happening with 4K disks. Just so I understand your reviews do you review the movie itself or mainly the technical publication of the 4k Disk and content?

    Hi please tell me what you think of The quality of pictures from this. I use the media streamer kodi and some apk’s I get a lot of movies that are like 30-40 Gb and 10 bit with either 4K hdr or Dolby Vision sometimes. Are these videos better quality than a Netflix 4K Dolby Vision. It looks like they are I’ve never seen ten bit Netflix please tell me what you think thank you I really like your channel. • @ConnerNielsen6
      @ConnerNielsen6 Před 3 lety

      I like it as a cultural artifact. The movie’s not good, but I find kind of fascinating in terms of an art house filmmaker who specializes in weird and off-putting films like David Lynch being courted to direct a big-budget sci-fi epic, having his budget slashed, and kicked out of the editing room when what he shot was weird and off-putting. The producers were wanting the next Star Wars, and what they got was… Dune.

  • @GA-1st
    @GA-1st Před 3 lety

    I have it, only because I'm a David Lynch fan. That said, I doubt Lynch had anything to do with the Arrow release. He's disavowed the movie. Dino De Laurentiis destroyed his vision and cut it to pieces. He's not even interested in going back and doing his own director's cut. He's definitely moved on! FYI: The new Denis Villeneuve "Dune: Part One" opens on October 22, 2021. 85% RT "rating" from early reviews so far. Mostly raves, but not all, obviously. I predict it will be a B.O. bomb, however, and we won't see a "Part 2."

    The fact that one of the commentary tracks on the first disc discusses the similarities between Adolf Hitler and Donald Trump is so unpleasant, exhausting, and inappropriate.
    I totally reject the idea that everything in life, from dating to sports to a commentary track on David Lynch’s Dune, has to be poisoned by midwit tribal politics.
    We all need a break from this occasionally.

    Great to hear the transfer is top notch. But I’ll hold onto my bluray. I own this movie because of how horrible it is. And I mean truly horrible. This isn’t something I need to own in 4k. The packaging is enticing, but I can’t justify spending $50 after taxes for it
