    Interstellar is for me, the greatest cinema experience that I've ever had. The visuals, the biblical soundtrack, the acting, all combined for a moment that I'll remember for a lifetime. In the pantheon of scifi epics, this has to be one of, if not THE best ever made. Cheers.

    "The film is real as it was shot on film which is different to shooting video. Video has been proven to work at the highest level but the film simply requires more skill."
    I applaud you for your honesty concerning that matter, John. I also applaud you for doing right by Interstellar, acknowledging it as a visual masterpiece, and reviewing it as such.
    Film reviewers, both professional and non-professional, have made a habit of calling Interstellar a poor film and accusing it of cinematic crimes it is not guilty of, such as not possessing internal logic. I believe the film (particularly the ending) was too radical for some viewers.
    When I saw Interstellar for the first time in 2014, I saw it in a standard modern theater with digital projection; I nonetheless felt I had just seen a masterpiece and not merely a visual masterpiece but a masterpiece of cinema.
    I appreciate your kindness towards other reviewers and for spreading awareness of their channels. I have now seen Clark Teddles review of the 4K of Close Encounters of the Third Kind as a consequence. - Erik

      @moviecollector5920  Před 2 lety

      Thank you Erik. I think seeing Interstellar on a big screen of any size will work wonders for it. Our home screens tend to be too small and even if I were to stick it on our ten foot roll down in the living room it still wouldn't quite do it justice. A few feet bigger and I think we'd be almost there though.
      Why on earth anyone would criticize this film in such a fashion as you said is a mystery. I wonder if some of it is jealousy because jealousy seems to play a big role in society today. I think Christopher Nolan and everyone involved with Interstellar should be justifiably proud of whatever involvement they had. I hope that in years to come it gains in stature and gets the recognition it deserved from day 1. John Carpenter's The Thing and Stanley Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey were slagged off when they first came out so professional critics do get things horribly wrong at times. I don't.... snort!

    I remember watching this movie and remembering the music was outstanding as is almost all of Hans Zimmer's scores. Dunkirk was equally impressive with the music that was constantly building creating a tension for the viewer to watch it. One scene in Dunkirk that I always rewind and watch again is the scene of the Spitfire dead stick over the beach with the engine not running. I think that scene alone is just a great example of excellent cinematography that Nolan is known for. This movie however I need to go back and watch again as the first time I watch was only in 1080p. John, another great review! Your enthusiasm for film and your technical knowledge is what puts you head and shoulders above the other movie reviewers I follow.
    Interstellar is one of my favourite films. As a Sci-Fi, Nolan, Hans Zimmer and 4K enthusiast, it would be hard for me not to fall in love with this film. I think the score for this film is one of the best ever written. It might not be as recognisable as the Jaws “duh-dun”, or Vader’s Imperial March, but I think the score for this film is flawless from start to finish.
    I can’t wait for your The Thing review! If you haven’t already got one, grab a copy of the Arrow Video Blu-ray to compare to the new Universal 4K. Arrow Video’s Blu-ray came from a 4K scan and may actually come out on top if Universal haven’t put as much love and care into the 4K release as they ought to have!

      Evening Alexander. Leon at Leon Talks Film has already done a video where he talks about both versions of The Thing (the new 4K and the Arrow Blu-ray) and it's an interesting view. I expect the 4K will look different in here as Leon's using a television which obviously won't be as big a screen as my home cinema but I respect his opinion. In other words Leon says the new release looks better due to HDR. That is going to vary across all our systems. Leon puts the Arrow release on top in terms of special features and packaging and when he shows them side by side it's easy to see why. I might be able to purchase a copy of the 4K this week.

    I love Interstellar. The score from Hans Zimmer is phenomenal. Nolan is a tremendous filmmaker. But a lot of people complain about the dialogue being inaudible. • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 6 měsíci

      I've never had this indistinct dialogue that many report. However, I do think many have got confused by the face masks used in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (on the villain Blaine if I've got his name correct) and then TENET. Obviously those sequences with characters shouting and quickly saying things to each other are supposed to be indistinct but even when it's intended to be almost inaudible you still get enough of what they're gabbling on about. It probably helps to have a THX Ultra sound system at home because many are using things like sound bars now and you don't need to be a genius to work out that they are not going to sound like the BFI IMAX. INTERSTELLAR has no sound issues that I can recall but budget sound systems are likely to make a pig's ear of all the myriad sound being chucked at us during the most climactic of the sequences.

    Looks like we have the same opinion of this film. This film is masterful. Again - Nolan explored the concept of time via different methods / approaches. Hans Zimmer’s score is insane (Mountains is my favourite). My only gripe is love transcending time to send a message to the past via the future humans creation via the black hole dimension (although I do like the idea of the father/daughter connection). When Matt Damon gets blown out of the airlock, I jumped out of my imax chair! Haha - As you say though... the visuals in this film are beyond CGI - they are really why Nolan’s films won’t date because of his technique with practical.
    My main complaint of the disc is the black levels - sometimes they are greyish and some space shots looked washed out. Otherwise though, the detail and colour are so much better.

    This is my favourite movie without a doubt. Rewatchable (within reason), beautifully shot, incredible sound and score and rather emotional.
    This is the last movie I saw in a genuine IMAX theatre and it was something to behold. I also love the Nolan compromise of going 16:9 on the IMAX shots rather than maintaining the 4:3 for home release like Zack Snyder does. I think the feel of the image "opening up" is more immersive than the maintenance of the original aspect ratio.
    This is my "reference" disc. Sure other movies my look a bit clearer, and Nolan doesn't go for Atmos or DTS:X, but the package of story, visual presentation and audio presentation has always impressed friends and family. The scene where Matt Damon blows the hatch has an impressive subwoofer effect on the disc that I don't recall in the theatre. I find that theatres don't let the sound go as deep for the simple technical reason that it's more difficult to prevent bass notes travelling into the adjacent cinema.
    And this score is Zimmer's finest in my opinion, and that's saying something!

    When this hit theaters I brought my father to see it on the BIG-D, essentially a gigantic screen utilizing the best 4K projector out there. The experience was truly epic for me, though less so for my father who had a hard time discerning some of the dialogue spoken. Much of that was due to his lackluster hearing, but some was the result of Nolan‘s insistence on certain dialogue being unintelligible. Tenant was the height of his “I don’t want you to hear my dialogue” efforts and I hope the studios will start enforcing reason and logic on him.
    The film itself is a mixed bag for me. I feel it’s a truly astounding film until it falls apart at the end with too much of what transpired being explained. It’s also unrealistic that the entire population of earth would be moved out into space onto little space stations. The film would have been far better with an oblique and obscure ending where the audience was left wondering. That’s just my opinion. And it has not prevented me from enjoying it on Blu-ray. I should mention that Nolan’s insistence on using actual sets and models instead of CGI truly pays off on the big scene.
    As always, thank you for your reviews. I never miss watching your uploads.
    By the way, the second Matt Damon appeared on screen I knew he would be… Spoiler alter, Spoiler alert… a piece of garbage weasel-coward. I just knew it. And so did a lady sitting behind me who immediately blurted out, “Matt Damon! I bet he’s going to be the villain.” 😂

      Matt Damon then went on to be stranded on another planet the following year... Mars. I was going to mention that but I had to drop a whole lot of things otherwise I'd have been blathering on for ages. As for the nonsense about evacuating the entire population into space - ridiculous! Fortunately for anyone worried about all the alarmism being touted by the media there was an experiment sent up with the current NASA Mars lander to see if it could convert the Martian atmosphere into breathable oxygen. It was turned on for an hour and broke down the CO2 into ten minutes worth of breathable oxygen. Basically if man can do it on an alien planet we have nothing to worry about on earth... except the exponential rise in the world population perhaps. But despite all that tosh to set up the story of Interstellar it is a great film to look at. And it looked even better in genuine IMAX which equates to about 45K as I said in the review. People need to think about this some more because we're being force fed sub-standard products despite paying a high price for a cinema ticket.

Be interesting to hear what you think of The Thing - I was very eager to pick this up but have some hesitation due to what I've heard about the sound mix (largely good but with some anomalies). • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 2 lety

      I find that digital soundtracks re-worked into increased discrete channels tend to sound different even if they're essentially the same as the original matrixed four channel Dolby Stereo. I have downmixed them in the past by running the analogue hifi outputs into the amp. That does seem to restore them closer to what the sound once was. The trouble is with modern equipment we're just not getting all the outputs we used to get on disc players. But to be fair to the creators of the discs it takes a lot of work and adding soundtracks means a lot more time and checking and checking and checking. Then if they get anything wrong there are people who enjoy vilifying them on-line which can destroy sales. In other words, don't take any notice, purchase a disc you're interested in and make your own mind up. I don't take any notice of what techies and engineers say Danny. What is important is how the human eye perceives what we are looking at and sometimes what techies claim is not very good can look superlative. I think they get too wrapped up in the ability of machines when we are the best judge. Why some transfers are better than others depends on the source material and the quality of the transfer. Jaws was exceptional and that could be because it was a 6K scanner whereas Apocalypse Now was exceptional because they used the interpositive and therefore got the colour and contrast spot on, albeit a transfer at only 4K. With larger format films more capable scanners are required and to capture 70mm would require around 15K and therefore IMAX about 45K. I may be barking up the wrong tree but I think it's basic maths.

    I've just had the pleasure of watching the fantastic disc myself this evening.
    The PQ is remarkable and a nice step up over the previous BluRay I bought, some soft shots here and there but the overall detail is insane with great use of HDR.
    Re the audio issues that have been mentioned in the AV Forums review, had they not been mentioned in the review I don't think I'd have noticed. Once pointed out, the outdoor three way discussion does seem a bit dramatic without much noise from the storm but its hardly a deal breaker. Re the fire crackles at the end, they remind me of the opening fire crackles that were inserted in the 5.1 mix for Jaws, you pick up on it straight away if you're very familiar with the sound track but it didn't distract from anything else that was going on including the score.

      I think people get too wrapped up in picking fault at times. The amount of work that goes into mastering a Blu-ray let alone a 4K Blu-ray is immense and they have to tread a fine line. Many complain if a new release doesn't have the latest sound format while others complain that it's not the original sound. I tend to lean towards the latest sound system simply because I expect it to be better and I've had Dolby surround systems in the home for over 30 years now. I'm not obsessed with surround sound and don't really care so much these days as everything sounds so good on my THX system but some people are obsessed. That's usually because they're relatively new to it all. Who cares if a few scenes have had a bit of modification on the sound, it's the imagery that really matters and as long as the video and sound editors do their best we can't ask for more. I'd be happy with Dolby Stereo on The Thing let alone DTS X.
      With regards to out of focus shots, this is down to the shoot and nothing to do with the latest transfer but I'm sure you know that already.
      Leave a comment with a link to your flight simulation over the sight of the filming location for The Thing.

      Morning John, I agree with what you're saying here. But I have to be honest, when Jaws was given its first 5.1 mix for DVD I refused to watch it after the first viewing and went back to my Signature Collection Laser Disc. Someone had replace the haunting Whale Cry that is heard during the bonding scene aboard the Orca at night and at that point the original Mono mix wasn't an option on the DVD. This was fixed for the mix going forward thankfully. That original Whale Cry, every time I hear it, it still makes me feel cold at 46 years old. I'll be watching the 4K UHD Disc of Jaws on the 8th of Oct next, that'll be 40 years since it was shown on UK TV for the first time, my first viewing at 6 years old and thank you Father God Rest you!.. The Thing is one of my all time faves that I may watch once a year normally around late Nov along with Runaway Train (1985) - BTW John I recommend the Arrow Disc of Runaway Train if you don't have it. Could not agree more about Nolan; visually stunning but ultimately tedious. I remember seeing this in the cinema and left it unimpressed; Tenet will, barring unforeseen changes to his style, be the last of his films I spend money to go see: With Tenet I lost interest about 15 minutes in with ridiculously loud effects and music, but no audible dialogue, and all the literal back-and-forth; incredibly self-indulgent. I own a couple of his films on 1080p and Dunkirk on 4k and will buy Interstellar on 4k if the price is right.

      @@moviecollector5920 I would never buy an older movie just to get Atmos. I’m content with sound mixes as they were originally done. No need to add overhead and rear channel effects, etc. that were never there in the first place. If an Atmos mix comes with a new 4k release, I don’t object to it. I do think that Atmos is a significant advance for new movies. This was made clear to me some years ago, when I visited the Technicolor mixing room in Los Angeles, and they were playing an Atmos demo. The sense of being “there” was uncanny, with the walls of the room falling away. Let’s say you have a scene where a jet fighter is headed towards the viewer, and flies overhead past the POV to the rear. It’s obvious to me that actually hearing the jet fly over you and behind you would be quite dramatic and exciting, and it seems silly to me that Nolan would say this is a “distraction”. Whether or not people make proper use of Atmos’ capabilities is another matter. I can also see why Atmos is overkill for small rooms.

      Along with TENET I think INTERSTELLAR is among the greatest films ever made. Most won't agree with that but I consider that there's more to it than just the films themselves, it's how they were made and how everything was worked out and put into action with the final coup de grace being that they were shot with so much genuine IMAX and not the faux IMAX video cameras. Regarding continuity in this film's cuts, I think it's because Nolan dislikes reshoots, so he gets as much retakes as possible to get performances out of the actors on set, then selecting the best ones from them. (or so I remember Nolan saying something similar, probably). He also sometimes cuts hard the shots with dialogue, so it would seem like one character speaking and ends his/her dialogue, then sudden cut to the other character speaking.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 2 lety

      Possibly he cuts every possible frame because his films tend to be long and cinemas prefer shorter films to get more showings in each day. More showings means more take at the box office. Interstellar would have been about 4 hours long if he hadn't cut hard... but it was cut to match the maximum running time of a 70mm IMAX print without requiring an intermission. This is why the running time is two minutes shorter as an IMAX print because different end credits were used to make it fit onto a single platter.

      Contact is a fabulous film. I will never forget seeing a non-premiere 35mm print of that which still looked absolutely fantastic. Somehow it didn't seem to be on at any of the premiere cinemas in the West End so I had to see it on the Haymarket. Sphere looked similar shortly after that at the multiplex version of the Marble Arch. The last period of great image quality I think before the rot set in with low quality video projection. John.

    I really like the robot created for this film. Very creative. Another film I would like to see come to 4K is FORBIDDEN PLANET. Although it looks really good on 1088P blu-ray some of the scenes still come out a bit fuzzy. MGM went all out for their first sci-fi film. Many film makers were inspired by it including Gene Roddenberry who was inspired to create his STAR TREK series. I consider it one of the all time best sci-fi films ever made and one of my all time favorites and feel that it deserves to be shown in the best format available today. Have a great day. Daniel.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před 2 lety +1

      You may find that those slightly fuzzy scenes in Forbidden Planet were out of focus at the time of filming Daniel. Quite often other reviewers claim a cine transfer has been messed up because there are some blurry scenes but it's down to the actual shoot. With Forbidden Planet there are also many special effects shots and that often results in a degradation in image quality unless larger format film was used exclusively for the composite effects which was how the problem was avoided for Star Wars. John.

      @@moviecollector5920 Yes, I recognize that. Hitchcock's THE BIRDS is another example nevertheless it still looked better in 4K overall. For whatever reasons the film maker chose Eastmancolor instead of Technicolor. Perhaps the warmer tones of Eastmancolor added to the off color effects that made it look more like another planet in another solar system. I believe a 4k transfer would bring out truer colors as it consistently has in other transfers and it would be interesting to see the colors as they intended it to be. Daniel.

    A double dip into Interstellar John? Why not. I agree with you that the visuals on this movie are quite spectacular and top notch and of course a Zimmer soundtrack is quite the cherry to top the sundae.
    I find the performances of the star studded cast convincing but as I commented to your first video on Interstellar and as you noted on this second video, it's the nonsensical plot that I have some issues with in this movie. I believe it had the potential to be a much grander film if more work and development had been invested into a more consistent and logical storyline.
    Despite Nolan resorting to the consulting services from physics Nobel laureate Kip Thorne, an expert in the field of general relativity (Einsteinian gravity), blackholes and a pioneer in wormhole theory, I find that the Nolan brothers have taken a few too many liberties while developing the screenplay from an initial eight page sketchy story written by Lynda Obst and Kip Thorne years earlier. For instance, the implication of the wormhole technology being developped by future human descendants opens up a whole can of worms (pun intended) of temporal paradoxes not the least of which is the possibility of time travel to the past, which most physicist including Thorne would argue against. Another oddity is a 4D tesseract having being placed inside the singularity of the blackhole by future humans and Cooper finding his way inside of it all the way to the library in his home on Earth, removing his helmet mind you, and manipulating the hand of the wristwatch to send a message into the past. We don't even understand the concept of a spacetime singularity and the Nolans believe that it's possible to not only survive a trip by the hugely radioactive accretion disk of the blackhole, pass its event horizon all the way into its singularity. Allright maybe I'm too much of a stickler for getting scientific facts more straight in sci-fi movies. I guess I should follow your recommendation, suspend belief and enjoy the visual feast.
    The concept of wormhole travel used in Interstellar, has also been explored in the 1997 film "Contact" based on the novel of noted astrophysicist Carl Sagan and his wife Ann Druyan. An interesting note of trivia, Sagan also consulted with Kip Thorne to develop the wormhole concept for his book. In termes of screenplay, I find the subject more to my liking in Contact with all the sociological implications of first alien contact. Contact is an underated gem of a movie available on Blu-ray. I hope it gets a 4K release sometime in the future and I highly recommend it to you John if you haven't seen it. Trivia note No. 2, Matthew McConaughey also stars in this one opposite of Jodie Foster who is the main protagonist of this movie.

      I got this comment Jesus and I think I got an email notification of your Close Encounters comment but couldn't get to it or find it when clicking on 'reply'. As for Contact, I loved that film from the day I saw it. Great quality 35mm before the downturn set in a couple of years later. I got the USA DVD as soon as it was out but I haven't purchased the Blu-ray because I know the film so well and the DVD is exceptionally good quality in the first place. I'd take the leap if it got a 4K release though.
      As for the accuracy of manipulating time and surviving a trip into a black hole and all that nonsense, I suppose it's a shame the film suddenly took a turn into impossibilities but when you've got a film that looks this good I'm prepared to accept that it's a film and a work of fiction rather than a documentary. I actually enjoy working out these Nolan films now and although my own interpretation differs from what the film makers intended I do think that the light speed travel meaning you are everywhere in the universe simultaneously is a more plausible explanation if you accept that Cooper chooses to be where he ends up. It doesn't explain the gravity manipulation though but I doubt anything would.
      I didn't do a full review of Interstellar previously so having watched it again I thought it deserved one. I think this video is a little more detailed but I'm aware I repeated some of my personal history with the film. Had to be done though.
      John.

      It's among the best 4K releases so far Jeroen. It's excellent quality is due to the fact that it was filmed in large part in genuine IMAX and that means 15 sprocket high 70mm film. It doesn't get any better than that. You won't see the full height in this disc release but the 16x9 compromise does make for the best impact.

    So here's how I understand the ending: I believe that some scientists believe that if a black hole were large enough, a person could actually be able to reach the event horizon without being spaghettified, or torn apart. In the movie, they call this idea a "gentle singularity". I'm sure Kip Thorne is basing his equations on this idea. Sooo the mystery is "if it were actually possible to cross over the event horizon without being shredded apart, what would happen? The theory is that you'd be completely outside the realm of known physics, and the movie builds up on this idea to suggest that "future humans, far more advanced than us, have been able to take advantage of this phenomenon to artificially create a conduit for Cooper, that allows him to be connected to his daughter at any time". The black hole itself isn't doing this. The future humans have been able to manipulate inside the event horizon to allow this, just as they manipulated the wormhole. This is why it's called a construct. To the future humans, it's as easy as for us to construct a building. BUT they can only do so inside the event horizon, which is why they needed to get him inside. (Cooper needed to get data that measured what it was like inside the event horizon, as this was the missing piece to be able to create anti-gravity). Once the construct collapsed, the future humans wormholed Cooper back to the solar system, and since like 80 years had passed for him (due to the time dilation effects on the first planet + the time they needed to arrive at the other planet, etc etc). So he was able to see his daughter one last time before he took off to make sweet sweet babies with Anne Hathaway (and I cannot blame the man, I would do the same).

      That's well thought out Basil. Don't know if many people would be able to understand it though but I can follow your thinking. There are probably many interpretations that solve everything and I find that I don't really care because I'm so invested in the film by the time of the tesseract that I couldn't give a monkeys how it gets concluded. The fact that they conclude it and it is possible to interpret it is good enough for me. I thought I more or less understood it the first time I saw it and I still think my original interpretation of light speed meaning you are everywhere in the universe at every time fits well enough.

I was thinking that maybe "MY FAIR GIRL-Y", "JAWS", "INTERSTELLAR", or "APOCALYPSE NOW" might have outshone it picture quality wise. However i respect your opinion and knowledge of the technology and medium so the picture quality on Branagh's movie must indeed be truly astounding.
