    I appreciate you not giving away spoilers, even though the movie is old. As someone who is younger, a lot of these "older " movies are new in my eyes, so I like to be able to appreciate them for the first time when possible.

    The Special Effects elements were shot in 65mm, so that by the time they have multiple passes through the optical printer, the image degradation that takes place is not as noticeable when the 65mm is copied to 35mm, and then cut into the film.

    ET is excellent in the 4K format with the HDR I could see things in the film that I didn't notice before I also had my son watch it with me for his first time seeing it on this format was a lot of fun definitely worth the upgrade in my opinion

    Mine came with a slipcover. I’m playing my copy on a Sony OLED 4K 65-inch monitor, a Sony 4K UHD Blu Ray player with HDR and Dolby Vision capability. My days of Sony Video Projectors (SXRD and LCD) are long past, three projectors from 2001 to 2014. Those bulbs got expensive and wore out way too fast (so did the projectors), and by the time 4k Sony projectors hit the scene I had had enough of the aggravation and expense. The film in 4K on my Sonly OLED looks just like it did back in the 1970s when I made three special trips across the river to Philadelphia to see it at the now defunct Sam Eric Theater on 1908 Chestnut Street in 70mm and six track magnetic sound. When I caught a showing of it in a tiny theater one town over from me here in South Jersey (now a bank parking lot), it was a 35mm print, and I was amazed at how it looked every bit as good as the 70mm print at the Sam Eric had looked. Only later, did I learn that Spielberg blew up the 35mm original for special “roadshow” 70mm engagements. Why couldn’t he have just filmed the damn thing in 70mm? The 70mm version’s only real advantage was it had six discreet audio channels, and overhead sound effects like helicopters circling overhead, ordering Roy Neary and company to vacate Devil’s Tower. I’ve owned a Super 8, 400-foot highlight reel (Mono sound only), the film on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu Ray and now 4K Blu Ray (trading up from the older copies each time), and STILL the sound of the helicopters fail to dance around the room. They still don’t. It’s the one thing I’ve hated about the soundtrack since acquiring it years ago on Laserdisc. The audio has been somewhat repurposed to favor the front channels. Maybe that’s okay for just watching it through the TV speakers, but not when your theater room is outfitted for DTS 5.1 (and later 7.1 Master Audio) surround. The film has never sounded as good as it did in discreet 6 channel sound via the 70 mm theatrical print.

    In 1977, most film speeds were barely above 100 ISO, so shooting in natural dark was going to need to be pushed +1-2 stops in the lab to get better exposure, hence why the grain is so pronounced: it's the underexposed parts of the negative blown up to the point of visibility. I tend to love grain provided its an organic part of the image...if it's a sign that the DP didn't know what he was doing, then it irritates me.

    • @andreasoberg2021
      @andreasoberg2021 Před 3 lety +6

      @@keithtrickey3482 So the grain is part of how it was filmed. You cannot take it away in post production without introducing a lot of artifacts. For example if you noise reduce you will make the image look more smeared and fake which usually will look worse. Wolfman compares to 2001 but that movie was filmed in much more expensive 70mm film. Yes the image quality will be a lot better, but the cost of making the movie will be much higher.

As for 70mm Dolby, I saw the first Star Wars film in Boston in 70mm with my grade school in 1977. What I don't like about 70mm is that when a film plays as t Coolidge Corner, they move their midnight movies upstairs and I hate the upstairs auditorium.
