    What is most surprising is that the "ultimate collectors edition" of the Lord of the Rings & the Hobbit doesn't have the appendices and BTS discs, yet the remastered Blu-ray extended edition set does? It's really bizarre and its clear that it was just a cash grab.

    • @AlasdairGR
      @AlasdairGR Před rokem +3

      That's the thing that pisses me off the most. Including even the original DVD version of the Appendices in the Collector's Edition should have been required. But, even though the movies were greatly improved by the 4K transfer and HDR, what really NEEDS to have an upscale or remaster done to them is the Appendices. I don't know what digital camera the special features were originally shot on, so maybe getting a higher quality release of the Appendices is impossible. But

    • @melissalayson7275
      @melissalayson7275 Před 3 měsíci

      @AlasdairGR Also they were shot in 2K with 4K scan. So it really worth upgrading to 4K here?

  • @domcoke
    @domcoke Před 2 lety +240

    The problem with modern films like Inglorious Basterds is that there's nothing to re-scan. Films made pre 2003 have a cut negative, modern films because of digital intermediates break their link back to the original negative once they are scanned. And many of them are scanned at 2k. A restoration would require a complete overhaul, scanning the uncut negative again - they're not going to do that.

    • @buddychrist
      @buddychrist Před 2 lety +18

      Some big studios have scanned their negatives in a higher resolution than 2k but the process to downscale them to 4k costs too much so they just got with the 2k scan on some versions especially doing color correcting is a pain. They were doing color restorations on old films rig when 4k tvs came out and before 4k Blu-ray was a thing. Its very expensive and time consuming

      @@buddychrist I don't understand your point

    • @buddychrist
      @buddychrist Před 2 lety +6

      @@domcoke my point is those films are converted to a higher digital resolution thats more like 16k and some movies are not downcoverted due to cost and they used 2k copies to compress Blu-ray. They ended up using the 2k conversion since it was already done and technically better looking over the 1080 Blu-ray version.
      They don't always need to rerun the negative but the cost to convert the video and time is why they don't. Most of the time anniversary versions have a bigger budget to allow new conversions and treatments.

    • @domcoke
      @domcoke Před 2 lety +21

      @@buddychrist I have re-read your reply 3 times. I don't know what you mean by "those films". There are no film negatives that are scanned at 16k. There are *some*, like those that are shot on 65mm that are scanned at 8k. But these are rare. What, exactly, are the cost implications of downgrading something to 2k? [I'm already regretting asking this - cos I'm anticipating word-salad] - Perhaps English not being your first language is getting in the way here. Do you know what a cut negative is? And how this differs from the ENTIRE camera negative having to be scanned in at a higher resolution?

  • @specialedition3585
    @specialedition3585 Před 2 lety +29

    Another thing about the Star Trek 4K release. They are currently working on the 4K restoration of the director’s cut of the first one. So while they are doing that, they released this set with only the first 4 which includes the terrible theatrical cut of the first one. Meaning you’ll need to buy the first one again when they finish the restoration. They should have just waited an extra year for all of them to be finished.

    Love your channel Jeff,& your input has been very valuable to us. My wife actually watched this episode with me & sure enough she said that Paramount was double dipping on us Trek fans. I'm actually very proud of her for learning how this happens in physical media. Also I still have gripes with Paramount about the Indiana Jones 4K set. Excellent transfers, but one would think that Spielberg & Lucas could've went all out for a the 40TH anniversary of Jones. And yes both sets looked very generic. As for LOTR/Hobbit 4K sets great save. I picked up both used sets for $125. There was no way that I was paying double for a lackluster set. I'm still pissed at Disney for the Star Wars 4K set. Totally agree with you on the Indiana Jones set. Total missed opportunity. Universal did the same packaging for BTTF. With BTTF I did like the steelbooks better, but I totally agree with you on hiring a real artist for these really expensive Steelbook sets. They could have commissioned Drew Struzan to do something nice.
    The only people killing it right now with sweet steelbook packaging from the majors is Lionsgate. AND they come with awesome protective slipcovers, instead of just a standard J-card.

Results were very clear in the effects from seasons 4,5,6 and 7 with what they could achieve. However over half the episodes and effects are trapped in a 480i container so would need remaking from scratch effects and unlike TNG all the original live action footage would need to be found from the masters and is a massive effort. Think TNG cost $30m to restore, remix and remaster all 174 episodes and they never saw a return. Ds9 would cost more and the market has shrunk further for physical and TNG was the test ground being the most "financially viable" of that era of star trek. Its sad but... the fans are trying. I think you're mistaken about the Road Warrior audio issues. As I understand it, the Atmos version contains altered bits, a few removed or replaced sounds that sound wrong to people who know the film by heart. But the real issue is that the audio menu option claims that the original audio is included in the non-atmos versions and it's not. All the versions of the audio contain only the new atmos version. There is nothing wrong with the downsample, though. The problem is that it is altered. Yes, it is a bummer that they didn't include the original audio, as advertised, but the discs are still on my local store shelves and I doubt that most fans will know the difference. This is all old hat to Star Wars fans, except here you can listen to the original audio on the included Blu-Ray.

    • @bogroll1881
      @bogroll1881 Před 2 lety +2

      Agree there is also the generic issue with Atmos that quite often the new mix is compressed and less dynamic than previous mixes in DD or DTS - just another example of general ignorance around these issues by the people employed to remix soundtracks - or auto AI processes which don't even have human ears in the chain.

    That packaging for Citizen Kane was truly awful.
    I transferred my discs to a black, four-disc plastic replacement case and have used (for now) some cover art from a Blu-ray edition from the U.K. 🙂

      The packaging reminds me of the Guillermo del Toro Spanish trilogy blu-ray box set. I'm honestly not sure why they packaged it like that again, it doesn't seem like that edition sold very well.

      @@EpicGamerWinXD69 - The Del Toro set sold out and went OOP. It sold very well.

      @@JakeKaufmanFilms seriously? That doesn't make any sense, it was just a re-release of existing films on the collection, and I'm pretty sure it retailed for than the price for each individual film separately.

    Glad i bought the 4k Collectors Edition for Lord of the Rings Trilogy previously. Came with a collectable ring and slightly different packaging. Wasn’t very much more expensive either

  • @michael_dalessandro_lena

    Plz make packaging of all time list! haha
