Well, let me confirm some good news. We just completed North by Northwest in 4K from a new 6.5K scan. Looks fantastic!
We also did The Matrix, Edge of Tomorrow, and The Fugitive from your list.

I also want Speed Racer and keep campaigning around here for it, along with Troy and Last Samurai.

I suspect the reason NxNW wasn't restored with most of the other major Hitchcocks is it's owned by Warner Bros. (made for MGM) while Universal owns the others (made for Universal or Paramount, except Rope which was WB but came thru Hitchcock's estate). Universal was able to get NxNW licensed for the U.S. version of its Hitchcock Blu-ray set, but not for its 4K sets (I have all three); it's good to see WB is moving forward with it now. Perhaps you can move on to some of the other WB-owned Hitchcocks.

For me, 4k really makes sense for older movies, that's why many restorations look absolutely gorgeous. Many of them shot on 35 mm film stock, with a native resolution of at least 6.5k. It's still uncertain which is the maximum resolution of a 35 mm film stock. When it comes to those Hitchcock restorations, Vertigo is still my favorite. Shot in VistaVision, it's just a jaw dropping 4k transfer. As for the newer movies shot on digital cameras, 4k is just hit or miss. Ironically, there are still a lot of modern movies which are upscales from 2k. The pristine, digital look of these movies cope well enough with the basic blu-ray format, I just don't see much improvement in their 4k counterparts.

YES! "THE ROCK" in 4K would be something I would definitely buy. Bought it in DVD and then bought it again in Blu-ray and would definitely buy it in 4K. (I've only done this with certain movies including the original Top Gun and Star Wars, the original trilogy: IV, V & VI, from laserdisc to dvd to blu-ray.) Yes Disney is no longer going to produce physical media but they've given Sony the rights to produce the physical media of any new movies and catalog titles least for the USA and Canada market... so hopefully Sony will bring out The Rock. "Hunt for Red October" is another Sean Connery movie already in 4K that I bought already having it in Blu-ray and DVD. It's not the best movie to show off 4K as much of the movie is darker and within the confines of a submarine but a great movie.

I'm sure it still looks better in 4K but didn't the Matrix also get a recent Blu-Ray re-release that also had the fixed colour grading?
That's a movie I was always reluctant to buy on Blu-Ray because, while I'm aware of the slight green tint in the original movie, what I'd heard about the original Blu-Ray release was that the green tint was pumped up to oversaturation because the person doing the colour grading based it on the highway scene from Matrix: Reloaded, which really pumped up the green tint, so the green tint in the original film was no longer subtle the way it was back on the big screen in 1999.

I couldn't wait until Edge of Tomorrow was released on 4K. Before it was even announced, it was a film I was really hoping would hit the format. A film that got destroyed at the box office due to awful advertising that deserved to be seen a lot more than it was.
Agree about The Fugitive. It's one of the best "upgrades" in a while, and a great example of the benefits of moving up to UHD. Although it's not exactly a fair comparison since the Blu-ray looked so bad in the first place, and sometimes you can still get an Atmos track even on the older format.
Agree about The Matrix as well. It's easily in my top ten favorite films of all time. I purchased it on DVD (and at the time its 5.1 mix was demo material for a home theater), then again on Blu-ray, then again on UHD, where yet again it was a demo disc for sound.
Funny you should mention The Rock. I was just thinking last night (while watching Face/Off and The Untouchables) how it would be nice to get that film in 4K. Two other films I really want in 4K are Dark City (The Crow just released, so there's hope) and Tron Legacy. Supposedly Disney is working on a 4K version, but whether or not that's true, or if it will get a physical release is anyone's guess. It already looks and sounds great on the Blu-ray, but can you imagine it with Dolby Vision and Atmos? 🤯
Also, I don't know if you've heard, but Sony is now going to be doing the physical releases for Disney, so it doesn't seem like Disney is actually ducking out of the physical media space. Sony will be the new distributor and also have a hand in helping Disney decide what to release. Not sure about the actual transfers, but we can only hope Sony will be in charge of that as well since theirs always blow away Disney's anyway.

EDGE OF TOMORROW was a gimmicky movie originally made more tolerable by 3D, which makes the original 3D blu-ray a better option, because it still has the added gimmick of the subsonic bass sting that opened it. Hitchcock's 1954 remake of his own thriller, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, is definitely worth the 4K upgrade because of the addition of the original Perspecta multi-channel sound to the new 4K scan. Most new 4K scans will always look better than previous blu-rays, but one of the reasons they don't include newly remastered blu-ray discs with these newer 4K releases is because generally a blu-ray remastered from the same 4K scan looks about as good (even without the HDR in most cases). By the way, a new print of NORTH BY NORTHWEST is being shown at the TCM film festival, probably meaning a new scan of the VistaVision master has been made. It may get a new theatrical release as well, and since they usually make 6K scans of VistaVision movies, it's probably in line soon for a 4K disc release for it's 65th Anniversary by the end of the year.

Thanks for the video! FYI, do not buy Ex Machina 4K. It adds nothing to the quality of the movie.

The point of the 10hz rumble at the very beginning of the movie Edge of Tomorrow is to start off giving anxiety to the viewer. Low notes have been proven to produce anxiety in human beings and by starting you off like that, the film maker hopes that you’ll be on the edge of your seat and carry that feeling throughout the picture. It’s an effective way to keep the suspense going.

I didn't think much of the picture quality of Matrix in 4K, l have the 1080p Bluray as well and did not think picture was better.
    Looks quite dated now

Im sorry that you couldnt watch any modern movies growing up. To me, the 1970s, 80s and 90s were the second Golden Age of Cinema. Look at The Fugitive. I love that this great classic from 1993 is making a comeback on 4K. In 1999, you had The Matrix. And then, there's The Truman Show.
The Rock is not as great of a 90s classic. But it is a classic.

If I have the bluray then I will never buy the 4k. I basically buy and watch a movie once and that's it. Haven't been to the theater since the early 80's

Maybe I'm in the minority. I loved the upgrade to Blu-Ray because that makes the movies look almost exactly how it was first run in theaters. However, 4K doesn't. It might be a step up in modern visual quality, but that's not how it was intended to look in the original release. But, that's just me. Guess I'm just a purist. I also have "The Fugitive" in Blu-Ray and the skin colors don't look like what you gave an example of. They weren't reddish and looked almost perfect. Much of it might be the color adjustments on the TV itself. I've also found that Blu-Rays look much better on my SONY rather than my Samsung.

Yeah you are definitely in the minority. Dolby Vision looks great, only available on 4K. 1080p Blu-ray is pretty good but for a good transfer 4k is worthwhile. Especially for older film restorations.

Please nobody is buying 4K. Sales are really down on that format. Also, you barely can tell the difference between 4K and Blu-ray.
    I'll stick with Blu-ray.

There are some questionable 4K discs but in general, on a good TV and sound system they are very good. The better your set-up the more you notice the difference.

    • @dangreeney
      @dangreeney Před 21 dnem +1

Absurd comment. Anyone who has a proper 4K OLED or high end projector (ideally an LCOS or LCD laser - even faux K) will immediately notice a huge difference on 99% of all 4K discs compared to HD Blus. And that’s just visually. Atmos audio will make a massive difference on any system 7.1 or higher (and yes, I do know some HD and 3D Blus have Atmos and some 4Ks don’t, but likely a majority do.) So yeah… don’t really care if 4K discs are selling (and clearly they are). The fact that we have them is an amazing gift.
