    Great overview - I bought his 4K boxset which includes all these films except Tenet - was a great vfm buy. Glad you rated Dunkirk so highly, as a Brit I love this particular film.

    Great rundown. My two favorites would be Dunkirk and The Dark Knight. Dunkirk is one of the best looking 4K blu-rays I have seen period and it is no slouch in the sound department.

    Just a quick correction, I stated that Inception had IMAX scenes, this is obviously incorrect as it has a fixed aspect ratio of 2:40.1. I recently watched the 3D edition of Doctor Strange (which has similar “world changing shots” ) and I was confusing the IMAX in that film to Inception’s similar scenes.

    I have all but 1 (The Prestige) of these 4k discs. I mostly agree with your ranking here. Such dynamic picture and sound without DV on these discs. However I wish Nolan would go smaller scale for his next film.

    Batman Begins 4K has the "pink look" problem for whatever reason. The red is just a little too pronounced. TDK and TDKR don't have this issue. TDKR in particular looks unbelievable. Definitely one of the best 4K dics I've ever seen. Prestige has it too, but it's not as prominent.

    One thing you fail to mention is nearly all if not all of Nolan"s 4K UHD's use the Theatrical 5.1 mixes. NOT the near-field mixes found on all the other Home Media formats. Near-field mixes are very common on all Home Media. They are designed to be played in small spaces (i.e. your home). Theatrical mix are designed for the much larger commercial theaters. The only other disc that I am aware of that offers both near-field and Theatrical mix is the Criterion edition of The Game.

    Nolan just sticks with normal HDR which is great but he doesn't go out of his way integrating Dolby Vision in his physical 4k uhd Bluray....I wish Oppenheimer has Dolby Vision... personally no issue in sound quality the dts hd ma 5.1 is a great theatrical sound with high bit rate works wonders on my home theatre

    Inception on 4k is famously terrible and much worse than the regular bluray version, with overcooked HDR and terrible, soft DI scan upscale. It's a pretty well-known fact in the UHD community. This ranking is totally wrong in terms of picture quality, I can't believe you actually seen the films and ranked Inception above Dunkirk or Tenet.

  • @ddc2957
    @ddc2957 Před 3 lety

    I can’t stand Nolan generally, but I will give him credit where it’s due - Insomnia is very good & Dunkirk positively blew me away. When you lock him into simply technical film-making he’s excellent, just keep him & his brother away from creative control.

    • @vb8428
      @vb8428 Před 3 lety

      And yet you watch his stuff?🤡
      Control is a double edged sword, without control in their earlier films they'd have never broken through.

      I’ve seen several of his films, what’s your point? There are all sorts of reasons someone may see a movie. Boredom, to please someone else more interested, in response to positive word of mouth.
      I’ve seen most of the movies where he fills the screen with pseudo-intellectual gobbledygook & in my experience those films tend to make stupid people feel like they’re smart.
