  • @nonametofame
    @nonametofame Před 2 lety +1

    The 2.0 aspect ratio is an interesting choice, but really confused the heck out of theatrical venues. My viewings were either cropped, or minimized too excessively.
    Not sure why Eggers opted for this niche, uncommon ratio. I imagine it will be frustrating for those who used masking for projector setups, as the film also employs a lot of subtitled scenes.

    • @mr.rapter4517
      @mr.rapter4517 Před 2 lety +3

      All 3 of Eggers' movies have uncommon ratios. The Witch is 1.66:1, The Lighthouse is 1.19:1 and The Northman is 1.85:1.
      He always chooses aspect ratios based on what feels right for the movie.

    • @nonametofame
      @nonametofame Před 2 lety

      @@mr.rapter4517 I have no issues with directors using different aspect ratios based on content. But he didn't use 1.85 for Northman. MovieGuy in this review cites 2.0:1 ratio. Eggers can choose any ratio he wants, but this will not be ideal with how most theatrical and home systems are set up

    • @mr.rapter4517
      @mr.rapter4517 Před 2 lety +2

      @@nonametofame Oh yeah, sorry, IMDb lists this as 1:85:1 but the 4K cover says 2.00:1. Yeah, I'm not sure why he's chosen this aspect ratio but it's his creative choice as was kinda to be expected. At this point I don't think he will ever make a movie in 2.40/2.39:1, lol.
      Many people pointed out that he makes art house type of movies so this big budget movie that played in many theaters is kind of a stand out because it looks the way it looks and theaters are not adapted to niche aspect ratios. It's a creative choice so it would look the way he wants, I don't think he really took the theaters not being able to adapt into consideration, he just did what he felt was proper.

    • @nonametofame
      @nonametofame Před 2 lety +1

      @@mr.rapter4517 no worries, it thew me off too. Imdb also isn't the most reliable source, especially technical aspects.
      I hope we get Eggers movies for many decades. He's truly a gifted and visionary director. The fact that we're getting to enjoy his work theatrically is a minor miracle.
      But I question why 2.0? Does he need to be so unique and esoteric just to be original, for every filmmaking decision? I can support that on a creative aspect but my first showing was hindrered because the Dolby cinema room presented it cropped, which cut off the subtitles.
      Eggers shouldn't compromise his vision in any way, so I guess we'll have to live with these rare anomalies.

    Best Buy advertised this 4K on their website with artwork of the main character standing on a cliff overlooking the water with the ships, and I really like that artwork so I pre-ordered it. However, when it arrived it was COMPLETELY different artwork, the one shown here (which I do not like nearly as much). So I returned it. I wonder why Best Buy falsely advertised the product?! I'm gonna buy it from Zavvi probably, because it seems like their UK version actually WILL have that artwork that was advertised.

    • @craigcrashdad
      @craigcrashdad Před 2 lety

      I’m sure that was the image that Best Buy got from the Manufacture/Distribution. Imagine’s sometimes change when dealing with preorders. The retailer doesn’t control what they are given when dealing with images of final products but they take all the heat dealing with unhappy customers and returns that cost them to lose money

    • @MatthewBrannickWilliam
      @MatthewBrannickWilliam Před 2 lety +1

      I'm so put off by the "cluster of characters in a triangle look" used on countless movie posters and blu-ray releases. I'm sure they have data that show they'll sell more copies than if they went with something more artistic or visually unique, but this isn't the DVD Era. 4k blu-ray is a niche market aimed mostly at collectors. I would love if companies released 4ks with artwork unique to them and save the bland people pleaser images for the DVDs

      @@craigcrashdad Well, no matter whose fault it was, it was still falsely advertised. If Best Buy is getting incorrect information from the manufacturer/distributor then I guess Best Buy needs to take that up with them, I can't do anything about that, I can only return the product that was falsely advertised to me and inform them of the situation.
