      @@andrewryan7641 The Grand Canyon to me looks like a better buy for less extreme riding. The GC has a wider gear range, less travel on the fork and less aggressive geometry. The Stoic in comparison is a bike that's strong enough for jumps, street/park riding and really technical trails. Depends what kind of riding you're into 👍

      Thanks! It feels good on the climbs yeah, plenty of grip from the tyres. Doesn’t slip around like my old 26er used to. I don’t feel like I need a wider-range cassette either, it’s just my lack of exercise that’s letting me down. I just had a quick look at the nukeproof scout. The base model has a 11-46T cassette compared to the 11-42T on this bike. Both have 30T chainrings so it looks like the Scout wins in terms of drivetrain. Better fork and a dropper post on the Scout too, but also more expensive!

      I guess you could in theory go bikepacking with it, but you’d be really limited on what you could take. The inner triangle is quite small, and like you say there are no rack mounts. You’d need to maximise what you take on the seat pack and handlebar pack.

    Would've been nice to hear your impressions of the "modern" geometry, handling and turning, as compared to your old bike

    • @t0mj4y
      @t0mj4y  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah, with Covid I think it was nearly a year since my last ride on my old bike so I could hardly remember what it was like to compare it to. Now that I've had a few more rides on my usual trails my thoughts are: I love the 29inch wheels. The combination of big wheels and grippy tyres mean that you can ride over everything. On my old bike (26er) I used to hit every bump and lose speed, but now it seems like I can just float over them with loads less rolling resistance. In terms of handling, it feels less jittery. I guess because the frame and wheels are heavy and the bars are wider it feels like you can just point and shoot to choose your line without having to worry about where your weight is. I had a lot of problems with my old SRAM GX 1x10 drivetrain, and this Shimano Deore 1x10 setup feels smoother, more reliable and quieter in comparison. Things that feel more or less the same as my old bike: the brakes, the fork, and the riding position. Things I miss: the dropper seatpost😔

      What about pedalling efficiency on even ground, fire roads or tarmac? Does the slacker head tube angle, reach and length of the bike make it feel sluggish?

    • @t0mj4y
      @t0mj4y  Před 3 lety

      @@dornerd It feels longer for sure, but I can't really feel the difference in terms of reach or head angle. It still climbs just fine on tarmac and gravel. I'd say It feels a lot less sluggish compared to my old bike, but I don't know if this is just the "29" effect. I usually ride with a bunch of guys with full-sus carbon enduro rigs and I can keep up with them without any problems. The only time I've felt that the bike was letting me down was in a steep technical climb. I could have done with a 46 or 48 tooth cog at the top of the cassette.

      The fork seems to have stayed the same to be honest. I've adjusted the rebound a few times and I'm fairly happy with it now. It's responsive enough and it does the job. I've heard lots of people criticising the fork, but for me it's been ok. My old bike had a Rockshox Recon 120mm and I'd say in comparison they are about the same. The Mahuna looks cool. It has a better gear range and I'm sure the frame is lighter, but the one thing that would put me off is the Quick-release instead of thru-axles.

      @t0mj4y  Před 3 lety +2

      Not a stupid question at all, I found out about this the hard way yesterday.! Yeah, it's difficult to clean. The rear triangle is a nightmare because as soon as the rag or t-shirt whatever you're using to clean it with has a little bit of grease on it, you just end up smearing it all around the frame. I think the white colour is cool though. There are already a few scratches from rock strikes on mine, so I'm not worried about it looking perfect anymore.

    • @t0mj4y
      @t0mj4y  Před 3 lety +4

      It's definitely capable of doing long tours, yes. It's well-built, and all of the components are designed to take a lot of abuse. I've done 30-40km rides so far and it feels fine for climbing and pedalling on flat. My advice would be: If it's been 20 years since you last rode a bike and you're not planning on throwing the bike down steep technical trails, off jumps, etc., a bike with less aggressive geometry might be a better option. There are plenty of cross country bikes around this price point that will have a more efficient, comfortable riding position for longer rides. Hope this helps!

  • @achrafesaidi8481
    @achrafesaidi8481 Před 3 lety +1

    Thanks for this video. I really like this bike as it comes at a decent price. Do you think the front thru axle is replaceable as I would prefer one without a QR handle -- a thru axle which is tightened with an Allen key would be better. I'm considering the Radon Jealous AL 8.0 (a German brand) which comes with a 1*12 Shimano Deore M6100 drivetrain, a Rock Shox Judy Gold RL Air (100mm). This bike is a good value for the money as it costs 1049 EUR (weight: 12kg). Another good bike is the Norco Fluit HT 2 which comes with a 1*11 Shimano Deore M5100, a Sun Tour XCM32 LOR DS 120mm, a dropper post, and a boost thru axle in the front and an HG thru axle in the rear. The only downside is the lower-end brakes HD-M275 from Tektro. As for the price, it's for 1099 EUR. Have you considered these bikes before? Any feedback would be much welcomed! Enjoy your bike. Greetings from Germany!

    • @t0mj4y
      @t0mj4y  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately I can't see how it would be possible to convert the front thru axle to one with an allen key because here are no threads on the inside of the fork. In my opinion it's a really elegant locking mechanism and there doesn't seem to be any compromise in rigidity compared to the rear. I hadn't seen either of the bikes you mentioned before but they both look like good options. I guess the Norco is more similar to the Stoic in terms of geometry and spec. For the difference in price I would still choose the Stoic and fit a dropper post with the extra 300 EUR. The Radon looks cool, it's lighter with higher spec components, although it seems much more suited to XC riding as opposed to enduro/trail riding. It depends what you want to ride really! If you like the Stoic, you could spend an extra 100EUR and get the Stoic 3 which has a dropper post and a decent long travel fork. Hope this helps!

You can loosen them a little, hold the brake lever to centre, then tighten the bolts. If that doesn't solve the problem. You should check the discs are tight, the pads are in properly and the wheel is centred.

      It's easy to assemble and comes with instructions and tools. I've got another video where you can see me assembling it. It would have taken less time if I had read the instructions! Really it's just a case of putting the handlebars on, the rear hanger and mech, pedals, and wheels. You'll need to buy some pedals and a pump to inflate the tyres but apart from that you should be fine!

For the money Canyon has very competitive priced bikes (direct consumer brand). My comment is not a complain in general (so will not write to Canyon nor Suntour), but is a question to see if other people, who have experienced the same thing, have been able to solve it. The simple solution is to change the fork to a better one. What I prob will do in a few months :D

      Sorry, I don't really have a good answer to this. I don't have anything to compare it to. In terms of price, I can only find this model (XCR 34 air boost) for sale online for about 300 euros. In terms of features it's an air fork with 34mm stanchions, 140mm travel, with a boost thru axle. I guess if you want the same features with a different brand like Rockshox or Fox it'd cost a lot more.

      Not a stupid question at all! I think it's a good bike for getting into mountain biking, and it's fine for short rides with the family, it's not uncomfortable on the flat. My advice would be: If you don't plan to do very extreme riding, something like the Grand Canyon 5 would be more appropriate because it has more relaxed geometry, a higher gear range and it's not as heavy.
