It's a shame not many people outside Brazil knows Garrincha. Most people think Brazil won the World Cups mainly because of Pele but no, Garrincha was the turbo engine of that team. Fabulous player with a great dribble and an explosive run n shot
I don't think so... Football fans all over the world knows Garrincha. I was born in the 80s but am familiar with Garrincha, Vava, Sagalo, Zico, Socrates, Leandro....

My grandfather used to talk me about Pele and Garrincha, even if he claims that Pele was better, Garrincha is closer to his heart, I've never watched a single video about him, because I was always impressed of the way he talked about him, till now. Now, I'm sad because the time passes too fast, and I kinda miss that times.

@@jacklaverty4310 back then in Brazil the championships usually had 2 legs or rounds and it is said that he was surprised in '58 that the world cup only had one. According to witnesses he said something like "what a weak tournament, its only one leg", in a more literal translation. Natalia over there translated even better.

In 1966 he was 33 and still scored goal aganist Bulgária and was scaked by the coach in the last macht aganist Portugal while Pelé was jumping on the Field to had an excuse for his failed since he had only Jairzinho on the Field because Garrincha, Tostão and Gerson were in the bench because of the coach. And guess what? Pelé retired from the nacional team at the age of 30 years old in 1971.

There will never be another Garrincha, unfortunately Garrincha like Maradona, didn't have a happy ending in his life after he retired from football. He had to deal with lots of addiction, which he didn't know to handle until his passing. Today, at almost 40 years of his death, his legacy will live forever in the Brazilian football and especially, in the world of football.

There is a claim he single handedly won the world cup for Brazil in 1962. The team wasn't so spectacular, then it lost Pele due to an injury before the first game, so Garrincha essentially carried the team to winning the cup. Another interesting fact is that he always considered the game of football as entertainment and fun, not a hard core competitive win or die thing (although either in his team Botafogo, the Barcelona of the 1950's and early 60's, and for Brazil, he usually won), and he wasn't as interested in scoring, as he was in passing the ball for another player to score. He would set up the most amazing plays, and hand the ball to another player to score. There will never be another player like Garrincha in the history of football.

Pele took nothing from Garrincha. Pele was there little brother. All these men set up Pele for what he brought unto the field of play. If these guys didn't support Pele, Pele would die as an unknown footballer. There is something when bigger boys work with young boys at a task. Pele is a product of such. Watch any teenager player on a senior team and you will know what I am talking about. If Pele is that dazzling expensive roof, Garrincha is that solid hidden foundation. The beauty and fame of Pele is how he carried football as a teen to adulthood and beyond. All the Brazilian greats, including Garrincha are in Pele. That is why Pele is king.

Why do we Brazilians have a natural talent for football? Does anyone explain this? It's as natural as walking or breathing. My nephew is only 4 years old and it is possible to realize that he has talent for football. On his birthday I gave him a gift ball, he liked the ball more than the other gifts.
