The speed, skill and stealth of Cruyffs movement in the 1974 World Cup was like magic to the eyes of a 10 year old, the way The Netherlands destroyed Brazil en route to the final was shocking. Never seen football like that in my life, I made The Netherlands my top Subbuteo team after that!

    • @StofStuiver
      @StofStuiver Před 2 lety +5

      You are right. It was magic.
      Pity that you cant find entire matches on youtube. I wonder if they still exist somewhere. Bc it is hard to explain to people that didnt see it. Ofc youngsters now, or probably everyone by his own generation is charmed by a great player and think he is best ever. But you cannot compare if you didnt see the ones from before. To me, Cruijff is the best player ever. For a number of reasons. He had it all.
      Ofc Messi is a delight and great. Christiano is. Maradonna was. Romario was, Ronaldo was. Ronaldinho. Etc etc. Still considering what Johan was capable of, he is the all time best imo.
      People compare maybe to some great goals, or number of goals, compare to a striker (but Johan wasnt a striker) but that doesnt define it for me. Johan made everyone on the pitch a better player. He was a teamplayer before anything else. He wasnt cheating either. You will find very few instances where he fauled (like Maradonna scoring with his hand). He was ambidextrous, able to do inside and outside left and right and top foot, naturally. It made him a great dribbler. Sensitive touches. Great passes. And so. Also had a work ethic that made him never give up. He was a director in the field for the rest of the team. He knew the game inside and out. He was an intelligent player.
      The germans didnt publish that article in Bild, day before the final, for fun. It was to take Johan out, whom it affected most. And the Argentinians kidnapped his wife and kid, so he wouldnt play at all.
      As far as im concerned, NL won 2 world cups, in 74 and 78.

    • @Pulsonar
      @Pulsonar Před 2 lety +4

      @@StofStuiver That’s a remarkable tribute to one of the GOAT players. I didn’t know about the horrible tricks and stunts employed by the Germans and Argentinians to disrupt Cruyffs influence in both WC finals. The Dutch introduced Total Football to the world, but for me the NL team were not Total if Cruyff wasn’t in the side. I might be heavily biased but high calibre players like Van Basten, Gulllit, Overmars, Rijkard, Bergkamp, Seedorf never impressed me as much as Cruyff. Each were brilliant in their own way and no doubt influenced by Cruyff and his magnificent achievements. He was one original master who created art on the pitch, he was not as outrageously prodigious as Maradona or Pele, but more subtle, efficient, better at letting his football IQ takeover his ego, and just as passionate. However, like those two great players Cruyff was a superior team player, and unselfish, a great inspiration - all the hallmarks of football genius.

      @@StofStuiver only one thing, from what I remember as a kid in 1978 Cruyff did not go to Argentina (he got his team into the finals but refused to go to Argentina due to a kidnap and death threat incident to his fami). The Dutch still made the finals with their familiar football style. Arie Haan was the Ronald Koeman of the 70s and scored one of the greatest long range missile goals I’ve ever seen, what an incredible team they were.

    In addition to being a brilliant player Cruyff seemed like a decent guy. When he was playing for the Washington Diplomats they were training in Florida at Jacksonville U. After one practice he went into goal and let the students who'd been watching take penalty kicks against him. He bet them a dollar each they wouldn't score. Not many superstars are that approachable.

When he was told that Olsson was the swedish right wing back in 1974 he instantly said. " Oh I know who he is! He played a greats game! I had to come up with something extraordinary to beat him. When Johan was on stage on the swedish football awards, Jan ( and their players from that great Åtvid side of the 70´s) said that when they faced Ajax in the early 70's, that this is the greatest team of all times. I am making this comment here because this video was produced by FIFA. Why is the real reason for Cruijff not being on the national team in 1978, in Argentina never discussed? Kept hush, hush, in fact.
    During the time of final selections of players in the national team, Cruijff's wife and children were kidnapped from his home in Spain while he was at the (football)club. They were released and returned him and to safety about a week later with an Argentinian message. The message was that Argentina wished for Cruijff to not play in the tournament and if he chose to play anyway, his family would be kidnapped again but at that time would be killed and not return. Cruijff consulted with some people close to him, including Spanish and Dutch officials. It was pointed out that for their entire lives he would have to fear and always look over his shoulder and that his family's safety could never be 100% guaranteed by any security team. He made a difficult choice to put his family first.
    Only 25 years later would he reveal this information in a book that he wrote, which leads me to a second question. Why did Cruijff not talk about this for 25 years and choose to speak, only after he was completely retired and disassociated from Barcelona and any business involvement with football? Who told him that they didn't want this to become big news?
    I encourage people to read his book. This and the entire 1978 World Cup makes me sick.

      I just looked up this story, that I had never heard before. Another (Dutch) source tells that Cruijff was actually at home as well. Apparently the kidnapper tried to tie Cruijff, but at that moment his wife Danny ran outside. The kidnapper went after her but was caught soon. The matras in a van parked close to their house made people think it was an attempt to kidnap.
