  • This book is for anyone looking to mix-up the standard archetypes for the Goddess past the standard Maiden, Mother, Crone. I found it to be a surprising exploration of gender and deity.

This books has lasted a few purges, how has it changed your practice? If your practicing in a coven, has it changed ritual? Is there a similar book that you'd find more relatable?

I'm a solitary practitioner, so I can't speak to the coven part of your question. But personally, I've found this book extremely freeing. I chose not to have children, and as a result, the overwhelming tendency in most pagan circles to equate womanhood with the cycles of female fertility is always jarring to me, and not very relatable. I loved the way Lasara Firefox Allen expanded the phases of a woman's life to five instead of three, that they define "woman" inclusively on so many levels, and that they acknowledge that the five phases presented here are non-linear -- that is, a woman may experience elements of the strengths and weaknesses of each stage at different points in her life and in ways that are relative to others around her. While I find it very difficult to identify with the "Mother" -- the mode of the traditional tripartite cycle that best accords with my current place in life -- I find great power in and resonance with the "Creatrix" and "Sapientia" phases.

I'm a Druid and don't practice in a coven. The OBOD structure already leaves plenty of room for deity to be discussed/called on in a multitude of ways so there hasn't been a change to ritual for me. I don't really know of any other book that is trying to change the archetype of Maiden, Mother, Crone than this book. So I can't say that I'd have another title to compare it to for your last question.

@@theeldritchlibrarian ahhhh that makes sense. I don't find a decent amount of woman these days not wanting to have kids and I think it's great that there is something out there say that it's ok. It doesn't make you any less who you are. Being not female, would this be of use to me? Not trying to sound rude or dismissive.

@@DanniEsotericMoment I think OBOD is wonderful for that same purpose. I have all my bard texts and flip through on occasion, waiting for the drive to start the adventure. Would say that this defines the goddess aspects better for you in your practice?

@@sam6030 I think it certainly could be, especially if you're a theist! It's a helpful book when it comes to expanding the way we think about the Goddess, and in many ways I think however we conceive of deity has implications for how we understand ourselves and each other.
