OK, I have a fun suggestion for mental activity: I break up a few treats into tiny pieces, go into a room without my dog and hide them in places where she can find them if she sniffed them out. I then call her, and I say “search!” She has so much fun searching around, using her little tiny nose to find little bits of treats. It’s a fun activity for us both, and I give her tons of praise when she finds a treat.
It so rewarding and bonding to work the mental games! We often get in a hurry and miss the fun of watching our pups solve puzzles as simple as a leash wrapped around a tree.
That’s what I’ve been telling my friend literally 10 minutes of being at my house I had enough of her dog going agro at my dogs so I started treat training her to sit, shake and wait and her dog got it so quick and calmed down so much.

He is zonked after ~15 mins of fetch (which incorporates basic training like wait, sit, down, and get it) into it. Border collies aren't just stamina herding dogs, they are also bred to think independently from humans. Not just that, but they're a strong eyed breed, so they stare to intimidate whatever they're herding. It's so frustrating when people (mainly family) think they know so much more than you do... When in reality, they don't know shit!

My dog, Molly, is a dachshund yorkie mix, henceforth called a Dorkie, and has frequent allergies, bouts of pancreatitis, muscles spasm, caused by hip and back issues. When her health is on a decline, she tends to not want to move, get out of bed, or eat, and that includes her bathroom visits. When she is in a health flare, she will not potty outside. She is on muscles relaxers, allergy medications, stomach medications, and pain medications, to manage her chronic health issues. What can I do, to help with her pain, and make it so Molly stops ruining the living room carpet, with her refusal to go outside? Next, what are your opinions on animal health monitors, like FitBark? Are they worth the money and hype? I love the GPS tracking feature, because Molly is great at bolting out the door, if opportunities present. Although, as she has gotten older, and bogged down with medical conditions, that has all but stopped.
This is why when I get a dog I want to get an agility course, or take them to a local place for one. Learning that different obstacles require different movements is great.
THISSSS 🎉 MY BC HAS to have mental stimulation and we do it daily in increments throughout the day along with physical activity and a tired pup is a happy pup because you know you’ve done the job right when they need a nap after working with them. 😂
Absolutely. I train many dogs of my own, girlfriends, family. My cousin had a black lab, I would teach him tricks, then take him out to walk the perimeter of their land, letting him explore and run around, then when we would go in I would play tug-a-war with him, including dragging him around the room. Which was not easy, he was a good 100 lbs. And I would rough house with him until I was tuckered out. But I also showed him love and discipline. We were pals. There is a balance you have to have with dogs, so they listen, respect, and love you. The 1st lesson is you are the alpha. Once established, the rest will gradually happen. All my dogs, and other people's dogs love me. I dated on woman who's dog hated everyone, he tried biting me on the first night. But by the end of our relationship that dog loved to sit in my lap and sleep. I even got her to calm down around other people so my ex could invite friends over and not have to worry someone was going to get bit.
I have a 16 year old pitbull with bad hips and sore joints. He will still try to run around like a puppy so I have to keep his zoomies under control. I am leaning much more heavily on mental games that are fun for both of us. Hide and seek, scent games and impulse control activities...
I have three methods for exercising my dog. Free roam at the dog park, walking trails on a prong collar, and obedience training. The dog park is actually the least reliable way to tire him out, albeit his favorite place to be. If I make the 25 minute drive to the park and there’s no one else there, then I come back home with a dog who’s still raring to go go go and a hooman who’s tired because standing around in an open field with no shade for an hour and a half is super draining. He’s not the most food motivated dog ever, so obedience training is more a fun exercise in patience for me than him. By far the most reliable way to tire him is trail walking with the prong collar (he’s a husky mix so harnesses, flat collars, and even slip leads seem to be an invitation to pull). He has no choice but to pay attention to me on the prong collar, and gets paid handsomely when he follows directions like “slow” and “let’s go.” I don’t force him to heel, but I do expect him to walk on a loose leash. By the time we’re done with 2.5mi, he’s ready to go back home.
!!!! This, ppl are constantly saying I’m doing too much or there is no point to teaching things like shake, roll over, stay etc… like your dog is soooooo bored. I’m not doing too much you’re doing too little!
I have a rule of no free food for my dogs. You want breakfast? Do your puzzle or go find where I hid it. Treat? Do a newer trick or a couple old ones. Dinner? Beat up your kong toy or knock over a tire toy. Its fun and stops them from wolfing everything down and getting sick.
Yes we have cattle dogs and this is so true! They never get tired. I have bought puzzles for them and they figure them out quickly. They need more then just running.
Choose your dog wisely, not just based on cuteness. What is their energy level? Does it match yours or is less than yours? Then that's a great dog for you. If it's more active than you are, then it's gonna be frustrating time for you and for the dogs. You'll get digging, barking, scratching, destroying things, chasing things, and every other bad behavior you haven't even imagined. Unless you have the energy, time, and patience to wear out your dog every single day, rain or shine, a dog with lower energy levels is a much better pick for you. A calm more reserved dog is so much easier to deal with and train than a very high energy dog that needs to be exercised and stimulated every single second of every day. Even if it looks cute when you first meet a dog and it's running excited and playing with you, you have to imagine that every single day from the moment you wake up till you go to sleep. Can you dedicate that much time and energy to trading and exercising the dog to burn off that energy?
I play hide and seek with a toy. He sits I show it to him and while he stays I go hide it- I hide it GOOD, then tell him to go get it. He is on a mission! It really takes no effort from me, but he goes on a hunt
My poodle gets at least an hour off leash at the park daily with his friends but he gets the most exhausted when they go off into the brush and run through it because he has to be constantly thinking which way to go to get through - running flat out is great but weaving through brush is exhausting!

I also implement a “free walk” where I give 10-15 ft of leash and take my dog out to fields and tree areas and just allow him to sniff dig smell everything on his own time and let him “ free roam “ I found walks like this implemented in his life has calmed him down substantially Just like long hikes, I don’t trust him to be off lead but I have a long lead and I let him roam he always stays near I never have to pull on him but he gets to explore and smell it’s so essential for dogs

I can’t take my pitbull to the dog park because she’s so protective of me she gets in fights with dogs (thankfully it was with one of our other dogs and not with a strangers dog). Unfortunately, I took in my former roommate's dog, and she has psychological damage, due to being confined in a bedroom, all her life (now 5 yrs old), with two crappy humans who took her outside, for 30 seconds, and barely fed her. I have the food aggression under control. However, she lunges and bites, and Joe Schmoe just doesn't seem to understand, that you can't walk towards her, without her trying to bite him, even when warned. I'm basically living in a basement, with her, my other dog, and my kid. I can barely pay attention, right now. This will change, but no clue when. Anyway, I don't walk her, because 1, she walks me, and 2, she lunges, and though I can reel her back in, it's difficult. Walking her, just around the perimeter, she linges at cars and people, as well as small animals. I keep her, because I plan to give her to a trainer, I know of, but I can't walk her, like I want to, because she's so unpredictable, and it's like trying to pull a rickshaw, with both former owners, on the back, to get her to cooperate! I will leave this last description to your imagination! She's a great dog, otherwise, but she would be put down, if I gave her to a shelter. Otherwise, I would try to rehome her. Shes quite the little clown, but the damage is done. I don't even know, if I'll be able to get her to the trainer, but I keep hoping. Shes all muscle, so not easy to control.
Also it depends on what breed of dog it is as to what type of play they need or want. I have two polar opposite dogs of what exercise tires them. My morning exercises veers towards one. And evening towards the other. It is also my free therapy:)
Yes that is what I trained my. But I was a teenager. Time and energy. If you do not have to the time or a yard to hen maybe a senior to dog. People are passing but to heir family does not want the pet. To the shelter they go. They house broken and some training. This maybe a short time. Time to see do you have time for a dog. Maybe a cat, yes I ama dog person but my job does not give me the time to fully care for a dog. Cats are fluffy and they mostly care for themselves.
There's no other way to have a happy healthy dog. Especially working breeds. Although I've moved from huskies to Cavs most of our exercise is enrichment like sniff walks, structured walks (heel and cue work while out and about), snuffles, toys, Kongs, puzzles, agility work, training and games. My Cavs aren't the lazy kind, they hunt. They'd be up the wall without enrichment.
Fml, hopefully the dog I adopt doesn't have ADD because I can barely deal with it for myself. TAKES FOREVER FOR ME to GET EXHAUSTED ENOUGH to FALL ASLEEP. Also, I'm tired by 2-3pm so that sucks. Fml lol

Hi Linda! I’m not Tom of course but I have a high energy golden girl at home who needs lots of mental stimulation on top of physical. I have 2 different snuffle mats which she loves. She also really loves searching for her kibble in the grass. I make her place and stay while I hide the kibble and she goes crazy when she finally gets to sniff for it. Another fun and tiring activity is “find it”, we put her in a place command and she sniffs the object before we hide it in our yard then we give the find it command. It really exhausts her having to use her nose to find the object, and she really loves it, makes her feel like she’s working. All these things really tire her out! Hope this was helpful (:

Dragging the pieces of treat across the ground can help the dog find them too. It leaves a scent trail that you can watch them follow closely

My huskies dig to make cooler areas to lie in, they also dig for moles, and ti bury bones. Digging is natural behaviour.

Hi Linda! I’m not Tom of course but I have a high energy golden girl at home who needs lots of mental stimulation on top of physical. I have 2 different snuffle mats which she loves. She also really loves searching for her kibble in the grass. I make her place and stay while I hide the kibble and she goes crazy when she finally gets to sniff for it. Another fun and tiring activity is “find it”, we put her in a place command and she sniffs the object before we hide it in our yard then we give the find it command. It really exhausts her having to use her nose to find the object, and she really loves it, makes her feel like she’s working. All these things really tire her out! Hope this was helpful (:
