Had a blue healer, taught him to sit at every corner/intersection on or off leash. Didn’t want either daughter to get dragged into traffic. Years later, oldest daughter took dog with her. Dog chased squirrel to corner, sat, turned to look a daughter for permission to continue. That dog never forgot what he learned, never got hit. When he’d do something that I didn’t like, I’d growl, he knew to stop. He got much love and many treats.

I rescued a 1.5 year old German shepherd and he was crazy. 2 weeks of constant work with him. We walked a lot in downtown in a leash and a good prong collar and boy I’ll tell ya! He can walk without a leash now, listens to my commands and is a great boy. I learned from your CZcams videos. I truly appreciate the free knowledge you give.

I have an 12 month old belgian malinois. Structure, discipline, reward, love, affection, and play time 3xs a day. I live in an apartment complex with hundreds of people. My dog is the only off leash, and he will never be on one unless I feel there is a need. E-colar every day.
We have check points. Door, hallway outside the door, top of landing, bottom of landing, and then free dog! I do this for structure, but I also do it for everyone’s safety. If I say no, that is what it means. His obedience is impeccable, he has restraint. Be a strong confident leader and your dog will be obey and di the same. What you put in you will get out. 90% people shouldn't have dogs and that same 90% shouldn't have kids. Thank you! Your video is an awesome tool!

When I adopted a 9 month old Rottweiler many years ago, i was told he doesn't like people and should be a yard-guard dog.
Took a few weeks for him to take food as a reward instrad of avoiding hands.
We trained and showed in AKC obedience trials and later scent detection. He is very social with people and loves to WORK.

Some people get scared of big dogs and get weird about "dominating" them.
Like he said, all you need to do is show them that what you want them to do is more important than chasing that car, or barking uncontrollably.
    That takes confidence, and consistency.
If they believe you know what you're doing, they'll believe that you know what they should be doing too.

  • @jeandoojune

My dogs always worked and were on time when with me. When I gave food they sat next to their favorite food until I said they can eat and so on. And I had anything from german shepards to Cane corso ( back then i dodn’t know that was what it was.. but i was only like 16y old 😅), mutts to Wirehaired german pointers… and cane corso and the last are my favorite. Now I see I naturally did what you teach. Most people just didn’t understand how the dogs obeyed without me even saying anything or doing anything… it’s years of work and me knowing the dog and dog knowing me inside out. I trained my friend’s dog, moved across the ocean and haven’t seen said dog since she was 2-3y old… she’s 10y now and we had a video call with said friend and the dog heard my voice and came and sat and stared at me with that “happy dog” look… it made me cry. She remembers me after all those years. So i tried to give her a few commands and gave her a few of my body labguage ones and she still did it all. Dogs truly never forget. And when people ask me how I did that they usually aren’t prepared for what I tell them and how much daily reinforcement and work this takes. Dogs need to be at work every day many hours a day to be balanced and fit into the family. The anthropomorphism people are doing now with “fur babies” and what not is not helping at all. Dog is a dog and you should treat him as such and you’ll gain an amazing friend.

I have a huge hole in my fence. A stray shepherd, bred for what looks like police or military work, 85lbs and significantly underweight, wandered in one day, looking for a new place to live (I didn't steal him, he was starving and flea-ridden enough that it had to be for months, and he's maybe a year old). That night, when i took him out, he gave me a totally wolfy look and took off out the front.
I didn't chase him, I didn't yell, because he needed something to do. So I said "Hey, WHAT'S THIS? LOOK!" He came running back around the corner, ran up to me like "I DUNNO, WHAT IS IT?!" I had him just look at some arbitrary spot with nothing there, gave him a treat, and went looking for another nothing-spot to get hyped about. Now he was with me. He's never tried to leave again, because i keep him busy, and he loves it. When i fix that hole, it'll only be for his protection. From disease, because he's proper weight now at 105lbs and still growing. Moves like a 40-lbs dog too and can clear my 4' porch railing from a standing jump. No fence is keeping him in, except the DAD fence. Lol.

I have a Belgian Malinois/German Shepard mix and I'm telling you, having a "job" makes her a good girl! She is not aggressive at all, but she is of a protector mind set. When people come to the door, she barks and acts the fool. BUT I don't open it until she sits. Meaning, she doesn't get to see who came to her door until she is being a good girl.

Yeah but DAs like myself who do not know better, end up needing to back pedal on training. being a trainer does not come naturally to most everyone. Everyone deserves the benefit of doubt that they are trying. I have never had to train reactive dogs. I have been lucky so I let things slide bc it’s a “dog thing” the problem is it’s a bad habit/behavior but I didn’t know. Like resource guarding, I have had dogs for 15yrs I had never been exposed but now I’m learning. No ones perfect and perfect dogs do not exist but never hurts to strive for perfection… in a positive way.

Thanks for your kind words - Dobermans are VERY prone to separation anxiety, and do best as in-house dogs. Thats the thing people don't understand about 'working' breeds. They can't just be homebody house dogs. They need to _do_ stuff to be happy. That's true with any large dog really but especially working breeds. We had a pit bull when I was little that had some hormone thing that made him huge, he got as big as a large lab. We had his papers too, half pit half mini pit. The vet said while rare, it does happen. Anyway my point is we had a TINY yard and we just did not have enough space for him to play and exercise properly. Also he...we loved him but he was as intelligent as a box of rocks, he just didn't take to leash training and he was so strong that if anyone other than my body builder father tried walking him, they'd enjoy a new sport, asphalt belly sledding. My father was also working full time and basically a single parent so he didn't have time to walk the dog nearly as often as he should. We gave the dog to a guy who had a ranch outside of town because, if you can't take care of an animal properly you shouldn't have them. We missed him terribly but this was a lot better for him. Saw him once or twice in passing the next couple years and he looked happy. He recognized us and barked like crazy wagging his tale.

Well I understand that part, but is it possible to do that with an adult dog? I got my dog from a shelter when he was two turning three, he’s currently four and never listens, he’s not even food motivated, he’s very picky

Thanks for the recommendation, Andres! Meanwhile, you can always use our online courses on diyk9.com to help fixing the behaviors of your German Shepherd, such as our "Unleashed!" program which is perfect for correcting bad habits in dogs, and for building up 100% reliable recall, and general responsiveness. Best wishes!

I started train my German shepherd at 6 weeks. She can walk on leash and sit. She now 9 weeks. She knows what place mean. Now I am teaching her to fetch. You definitely need strong personality for a German shepherd. I watch this guy video, McCann, and Zak. She does really well. I do my best to put her in a situation she is successful as all cost. However, if you make a mistake, I correct it right then and there.

In Training Videos click&treat are used and promoted, here in real life, nothing about click&treat, but leash pull. Two complete different styles why?
