This can be done in as little as 5 minutes. But take your time and do it right. This works with any age, any breed, anywhere. The decision on whether to use this on a prong collar or a flat collar or a slip lead is a personal one. It depends on numerous factors including breed, size, age, temperament, size and strength of handler, and how bad the pulling and reactivity issues are. However, 95% of the time I will use a prong collar on almost every dog and puppy when I start this technique. Sometimes, I will introduce this technique on a flat collar or slip lead (very young and/or very soft dog or puppy) but will very quickly switch to prong collar once they understand the process. In the end, 99.9% of every dog we train will end up being trained this technique on a prong collar.
It is the most fair and efficient tool in my opinion. I will NEVER teach this using a harness.
Please post in the comments below when you try this with your dog and the results you get. Please include the age, breed and describe the before and after results of this technique on your dog. I promise it works. Now get out there and get after it!

Dude your the best trainer out and I love your videos and have learned alot from you. I understand charging up the ass for you to take someone's dog and train it yourself personally. I totally get that. You want the best you pay for the best. But your e course where it's just your videos that are already recorded seem a little high. For a dad with 3 kids and a dog it's outrageous to pay 700 bucks for a e course. You say most other trainers are ass but you don't have a way to help normal people with there dogs. I wish you could

I cannot love this video enough. I love my dog. Tucker is smarter than smart. He just turned 1. He took me down this week when he took off after "something" in the dark. I'm 60, single, self employed, I don't have time to be injured. I was worried that 70 pounds of determination would hurt me. I've trained with him. He knows come, sit, down, stay, wait...and he does them, but the distractions have been the problem, and that night was dangerous. I just went and spent about 15 min (worth of treats lol) tightening him up with these techniques. By the time we were done, 80 of his attention was on me, he was turning when I did, staying in the "love" zone. I was preparing to donate him to someone younger and stronger, and it was tearing me up to think about it. We have renewed confidence! Thank you again!

She started pulling after she turned 6 months like crazy: every tree, dog, food was in her interest and I was dragged around according to her desires. I tried a lot of things and I was never against prong collar, I was just really scared to use it wrong and to do some damage, but the only mistake I made is that I waited too long to get to this tool. How many terrible interactions, frustration from both us could have been avoided. Incredible transformation within one walk. I did everything as stated in this video, and it works magic. Yes! Some dogs require it. Due to size, temperament, or behavior issues. As a dog owner, it is your responsibility to properly train your pet. I HATE walking down the street with my small dogs and having to either turn around or completely avoid another dog (usually from a larger breed) because the owner has absolutely no control over the dog. There is a German Shepard in my neighborhood that is a terror he has already attempted to attack multiple dogs while out on walks. Everyone pretty much avoids this dog and all because the owner has not done his job at properly correcting or training his dog, he just expects everyone else to avoid him.

I moved to UK and you wouldn’t believe how sickly and weak the culture is here. Big strong dogs need to know who is boss or they will walk all over you. Zapper collars are being banned here next year. I was taught to do a bop on the nose. It’s not beating or abusing your dog to do a light bop that they find uncomfortable and they don’t like it but it doesn’t hurt them. I’m rough and make it uncomfortable when I need to teach them a lesson. Because of this, I have three young dogs aged 11 months to 3 years who will sit quietly when we have the front door wide open and not run out. In the UK, the road is right near your front door. A friend told me how his kid’s dog ran out the front door into traffic and was hit by a car. 8 year old dog and was never trained! Being a wimp and not being harsh when needed means the dog doesn’t learn. Grabbing my pup by his scruff and bopping his nose meant it only took two or three times (get harsher each time) and then he never did it again. Now I don’t have to be harsh and he only gets cuddles but he won’t bolt into traffic and get hit.

I have been using a prong collar on my dog only to keep him from 'exploding.' The rest of the walk didn't concern me much (whether he was in front of me, to the side, distracted, etc.) as long as he wasn't 'exploding.' The other day I saw a video of yours for the first time where you said that a small 'whelp' meant 'I got his attention.' I never wanted to give such a stiff correction so I think I was using the right tool with the wrong technique (too soft).
Anyway, I took my dog out after watching that video and gave him exactly *one correction* when he wandered out in front of me. He gave a little 'whelp.' From that point on he was right next to me and looking up very often. We did the whole walk route without another correction. It has now been three days and I haven't had to give him another correction! (well, I did do the 'cleanup' correction.)
He is now very visually engaged from the time I put the prong collar on him until I take it off. The whole 'walk dynamic' has changed! I try to ensure that, as you say, 'he still enjoys being here' and that he doesn't think I am mad so gets praises and treats along the way.
This was very helpful and extremely encouraging. Thank you!

Thank you!!! After watching your video, I took my dog for a walk. I’d be dammed if this didn’t immediately do the trick.
I live in Las Vegas in a very busy area. All of the noise from the fast moving traffic as well as all of the pedestrians along our routes are always a distraction for him. But for the first time, using your methods, he was focused, and I actually enjoyed walking him. It took only a few practices in front of the house, and he caught on quickly. I enjoyed our walk so much that we kept walking to the local pet store about 2 miles away; your methods even corrected his behavior while inside the store- he maintained focus the entire time, regardless of the other pets and distractions present in the store. I rewarded him with some doggy ice cream in the parking lot, then we enjoyed our 2 mile stroll home. He’s not perfect, but I know he’s trying. I’m looking forward to enjoying our walks going forward.

That’s very inspiring, I rescued a PitBull from a dog fighting ring and he’s come so far but walking him is very difficult. Taking him to a pet store is even worse. He’s not aggressive however he just is so scared and overwhelmed he will urinate and he has these episodes where he can’t breathe properly it scared me and I asked the trainer and she said it’s just because he gets himself so worked up but his whole body stiffens and his breathing is very rapid. I’ve had him in classes and I work with him a little every day and I hope we can go for a nice walk and to the pet store. That would be so great! Congrats on your success with your dog and thanks for sharing ! ☺️

Just caught this video purely by accident. I think your technique is excellent. Was doing this over 25 years ago not including the prong collar. I use to call it the silent walk . The dog doesn't get chastised by the owner as you say learning by its own mistakes. Works an absolute treat. And works every time obviously some dogs don't always pick up straight away. But 99.99% got it . Squeaky voice I would stay away from. Obedience and control was always my start of after that it was pretty much plain sailing. The funny thing was I spent more time training the owners than the dogs . Keep up the great work. Paddy uk 🇬🇧

    • @JoLGSuny
      @JoLGSuny Před rokem +3

Yes, training the owners! I've said many times, if you cannot control your animal, you DO NOT need it. That should be top of the list, you do not want the animal playing, yet scare someone and they demand the animal be put down because the owner didn't properly train them.
Like jumping! I love my dogs!! Aka- my babies, I don't like them jumping on me, but a strangers dog?? No!
Rule of thumb, nobody loves your dog like you do. Don't expect them to tolerate your dogs bad behavior, meaning, pet owners need to do better.
It's not the animals fault they don't know how to mind. That responsibility falls 100% on the owner, and if they are not up to the job, they don't need them.
All it requires is love. If you simply love your pet, you will teach obedience. It's NOT cruel. What is cruel is not training them.

It worked after 5 tries. Now she walks close to me for most of our walk and everytime I lose her attention I do it 1 or 2 more times and it brings her attention back to me. I will also make her sit and wait until I have her attention again before we start walking and that works now as well. This trip k really worked for me!

My last dog a 60 lb Aussie male got so good off leash, sometimes slight finger signals or often just a look from me to do more, friends and family stunned. RV camping, that's where they would privately ask me if I'd mind 'taking their dogs for a walk'. A couple of these dogs took me ~half hour with lots of distractions (such is where we were), but all good. I found training the owners MUCH more difficult, in fact a few owners were untrainable.

I did this technique on the older two and night an day difference in 10 min. With the puppy she is very responsive and smart so with a nylon collar just simple guidance and very again stress, very gentle pops and was right where she needed to be. Might of helped watching the bulldog first for her but great results.
Great way to lay it out simple to follow and to the point, not abusive and anxiety creating.

I agree that some dogs require harsher corrections but I don’t think a correction that makes a dog yelp in pain (not just from the surprise) is necessary for most “regular” dogs. Imo you can do the same thing with less force and get the same results. Obviously, if the dog runs to the end of the leash and it hurts when it hits the end, that’s another situation. I’m only talking about corrections that the trainer gives themselves.

Decent obedience at home and good manners in public, but pulls like a freight train on the leash. Not sure if I understand your question. I think you mean what is the difference between a loose leash walk and an attention heel. I think it all comes down to how much Focus the dog is giving you out of a certain percentage. Attention heal is 100% focus on the handler and nothing else or 100/0. Loose leash walking can be anywhere from 50-50 to 80/20 attention on handler vs environment. That's the short answer

I'm guessing this technique is for larger more aggressive dogs. I just watched a video where a trainer stopped a golden retriever from pulling using a slip leash and an "engage" technique. The dog wasn't being hurt or fed a pill .He caught on pretty quick. He didn't even use food as reward.

This worked amazingly! And I think it was about 6mins for a 180 difference. My only question is does this commit you to only using the prong collar or can you transition to a harness or plan collar?

If you use punishment using the prong collar, you will always have to use the prong collar. The dog stopped pulling not because of an engagement and better relationship with the owner but because he is afraid of pain. It works but I don’t have the heart to do this to my dog.

I dont know, I tend to think that it would eventually be like every other thing trained to the dog which is after a while through consistency and repetition it would become muscle memory and second nature. Like when you teach a dog to sit initially with treats/rewards. Or with potty training. Eventually you get to a point where you just make eye contact and say "sit" and they sit. Eventually it becomes a strange feeling to potty anywhere but the grass, kind of like after a while we all would feel uncomfortable and strange to go in our pants instead of a toilet.
It will be that because of the painful stimulus literally from and associated with the pops that eventually the dog will understand that no pulling, no pops, no pain will mean walking within parameters relative to you and based on your movement rather than what collar it's wearing.🤷‍♂️

I rarely post comments on CZcams but felt I had to on this one. This worked a treat with my lab, just the walking back in the opposite direction after just one walk. Not perfect but 100x better and no longer rushing off/walking too fast in front.
