Can any contemporary dog trainer, train a pup without caging it?! WTH?!

I have a chihuahua puppy and at 8 weeks he only weighs a pound. There are no collars small enough for him so how do I start his training with out being able to use a leash?

You are absolutely the best trainer, I have learned so much from you. I started watching you when I got a toy golden doodle At 8 weeks old- so I started off with your kennel training & it worked. Now my little Stetson is 6 months old. You have helped me to train him on his place, to stay, sit, come, walk lose with a leash & now I run with him & he stays right next to my left leg. Sometimes a bit too close that I almost trip over him. We do all these commands 5-6 times a week. Now I’d like to work on him heeling. He’s so tiny I’m not sure if I can stay bent over to reach his mouth very long. I’m still going to give it a try especially since he does all his commands now without me holding his leash. Oh & I can’t forget to thank you for showing a video on how to keep his attention on me. It worked. He rarely takes his little eyeballs off me. It’s so darn cute. Thank you again for all your wonderful help your just the best! Just an fyi I have never trained a dog before. Cheryl

K wait so no harness for little dogs?... Ive got an 8month old male morkie (I've ways had big dogs, press canario, putty, rottie/Shepard...I know how to deal with big dogs) approx 8lbs. When I got him it was the ideal environment and he was training well progressing great. Circumstances changed and our household expanded then had to move/downsize our dwelling. I try to keep him away as much as possible to keep him focused on listening to me and learning what im trying to convey. However hes been regressing and just sits there and looks at me when im commanding and will walk away sometimes. It's like he's a cat LOL🤦🏻‍♀️as I said I know how to handle big dogs but he's so tiny and fragile & my baby I am unsure as to what/how to handle the diff kinds of bulls*%t that he's started doing. Things I can do while in a place that is chaotic and actually, he's been acting like these kids..(unable to discipline the kids properly they aren't ours and we aren't on the same page/back eachother up-which I KNOW what needs to be done and how to do it but the other guardian doesn't) however in my little dogs case im frustrated noone can be trusted to listen to my instructions when im not right there and I don't know what to do, I've seen how the kids dog turned out and I don't want that. Sorry for.the novel I just 🤷🏻‍♀️

I agree w everything you said. I was just wondering though….how long was the dog in the crate before you took him out to do this clip? I was thinking….what if he needs to go to the bathroom real quick? Then that would explain all that behavior you were describing in the beginning. Maybe he just needs to go pee!???? Idk. I think I’d let him go to the bathroom right out of the crate first thing. Love your videos Tom. I have your no bad dogs leash and treat pouch. Love them. ❤

I have an exact same frenchie girl. I trained her after I saw your videos. I hired a balance trainer because the reactivity still issue. We are in group class. She is excellent, the best in the group. No reactivity at all. But if we walk with her sister, she is the same reactive dog like before with the other dogs. I'm lost and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. 😢

I really appreciate and respect Tom. I don't start this type of corrections at 13 weeks because at this age puppies have little ability for impulse control until about 5 months. So even if he experiences discomfort, he will likely keep going back again and again if bored. I focus on redirection, exercise, new experiences that distract and finally confinement.

This about made me cry! You truly gave hope to those owners. I too have a reactive frenchie and it takes work! You are the only trainer that has given me hope too. ❤

Fun fact: I work as a trainer in Portugal, and 98% of all my clients are women. Yet, when a "celebrity" trainer comes to town, most people in the audience are men 😂

My dog was dumped. My husband was walking our other dog when she approached them. She was very sweet. We brought her inside our apt and introduced her to our cat. She was also very calm and showed bo agression. We had no clue she was agresivo until we were walking her kne day and she started barking, growling and lunging every time she came across another dog.

That are both females of that matters. Just wondering. Thanks😊

I only come down to let her out to potty from her crate once during the night so now you’re making me reassess my schedule lol I also have a small baby it’s like having two kids😂 she’s two and the puppies three months? I’m just in the terror phase all over the place😭😝

I don't get why she doesn't reward him. It's like she forgets. Not bashing her, I just wonder what trainors have instructed her to do before. Is it it maybe that she's nervous? That it's just in this situation she's a little tense?

Humans make their dogs what they are...that woman wasn't even listening while you were trying to help. She's one of the people who will keep blaming the dog I bet.

Can I say I totally agree that it is humans who need to be trained way more than the dogs. However I will also say that it’s not only the person with the dog who needs training . So often someone for example in a park is trying to gain control of deal with a situation and someone else starts being rude and abusive which makes the original owner fearful and fearful of walking the dog in the future, Not because of the dog but other owners . I understand completely that if you are fearful it will rub off on the dog and make them reactive but it is not that easy when you’re scared. I have had a dog I was under training and still when I went out somebody would start a confrontation with with, either disagreeing with how I was with my dog or thinking I was saying something about there dog if I moved mine away in training , I have had cameras shoved in my face and been screamed at by strangers, I will admitI’m not a confident person but all the education in the world of reading your dog and learning how to deal with behaviour doesn’t help you be less fearful of other people when they have a go.I implore everyone to indeed do training with your dog so you know what your dog is trying to say but also if you see someone struggling with a dog or they have a dog on lead , please give the benefit of doubt and have compassion. Make it easier for people not harder… rant over

Great video - as always - and a lovely responsible owner. Little dogs don't have to be turned into spoiled yappy brats (but invariably are in my experience). I have a friend with a miniature yorkie and I used to walk her with my 52kg GSD x Malamute. This tiny little dog was a DOG and had been brought up and trained as such so had no behavioural issues whatsoever. The reason for this - I have no doubt - is because my friend used to have a GSD previously so fully understood the whole "dogs are animals and not handbag accessories" thing 🙂

Your training videos have transformed my whole mindset with training my latest rescue. I can't thank you enough for making this available to me. There are some really good dog trainers on CZcams but, in my mind, Tom is the best. There are trainers who train dogs really well but their communication with people is somewhat lacking; they are judgemental and/or opinionated. There are trainers who communicate with people well; but I don't think they seem to even really like dogs that much! Tom clearly loves dogs and has the patience of a saint - he is a very rare breed.

If dog is off leash & aggressive the dog & owner are both fair game. Dog owners should be more responsible.

We have a 2.5 months old Chocolate Lab and Sheltie mix. She's full of beans; jumps, bites, pulls on the leash or does the opposite and just won't walk at all. She's in training but still needs a lot of work. It's frustrating for me as I'm on medical leave and my 72 years old mother (still in good health) really wanted the puppy but I'm the one home all day stuck trying to train while in a heck of a lot of pain and exhausted. My patience is definitely not there and I've never trained a dog before. Your vids are giving me some additional information which is helpful.

Now I need a video to get my dog to actually walk! She goes as far as she wants and then it becomes a tug-of-war. She'll even lie down and roll in the grass. I pick her up onto her feet and say walk with a tug on the leash and she sits or lays back down. Other times she turns around to go the opposite direction. It's not like we are even out for long or going far. I can be out just 5 mins and this starts.
