I’m sorry, but this video made me laugh so much. Memories of my husky boy who was a NIGHTMARE for biting at that age. And that craziness when they go from one bit of trouble to the next on a second by second basis, oh jeez, It was EXHAUSTING!!! To see an experienced trainer like Tom having to juggle and wrestle the craziness is very wholesome😂 House leash was the best piece of training I have ever been given. It made the job of behaviour management so much easier. George is now 2 and a half, and a really good boy. But I won’t lie..it was a long, hard road…and a LOT of hard work. But putting that time in when they are young pays back triplefold. For anyone struggling with that young dog stress….stick with it and be consistent. The rewards are worth it 🥰

When I got my puppy, I either kept him in his crate or watched him. I was able to stop him from doing bad things the first time he tried to, so he never got the impression that it was okay. When people first get a puppy, they let them do bad things because it's cute. By the time they realize it's a bad habit, it's already too late.

This is a great idea to do the live show of puppy in the house. And what a great breed to do it with. Not so easy as to make everybody feel bad, because their dog won’t do it. My dream breed would be a Neapolitan mastiff. Also, very serious breed. So I’m paying a lot of attention to you!

I really appreciate and respect Tom. I don't start this type of corrections at 13 weeks because at this age puppies have little ability for impulse control until about 5 months. So even if he experiences discomfort, he will likely keep going back again and again if bored. I focus on redirection, exercise, new experiences that distract and finally confinement.

My dog was a true landshark and she drove me crazy as a pup! In the end teaching her 'no' by immediately giving her the consequence of staying ten seconds in the bathroom after the unwanted behaviour worked like magic. Just a 'no' and then picking her up (when I could still carry her) without any emotion or extra words. Then letting her try again and repeat the series of events until she understands the relationship between her action, the word and the consequence. She understood really fast after we started doing that and it still works with new things we encounter. What I love about this technique is that it's not a physical consequence, but still an unwanted outcome for her as it separates her from the action and the excitement. The only downside is that you can't apply it when you're out on the street.

I got a 8.5 week old husky a few days ago. He’s been a handful!
Biting me all the time, jumping, etc… I’ve tried doing the snout closing whenever he’d bite me, FAIL. It only encouraged him. I was starting to feel very stressed and discouraged.
However, today I tried something new: Yelping whenever he bits me and then ignoring him for 30-60 seconds.
Whenever he bits or chews something I don’t want him to: yank his collar once (abruptly) and say “Leave It” in a stern voice. Once he obeys, I praise him; sometimes giving him a treat or a toy. In just one day, he’s listening 95% of the time! I’m so relieved to have found something that helped.
I started watching your puppy videos about a week before I picked him up, and I have found them to be EXTREMELY helpful!! Thank you so much for posting these.

I think it's really important to emphasize using other tactics as opposed to solely a physical correction and deterrent. I.e. if they're biting on furniture, scold them. Then give them a different something appropriate to chew on like a puppy toy, then reward with praise. I feel like using force as a deterrent can cause a less than healthy dichotomy for some relationships.

So, I do have a question... In regards to the tab leash type corrections... I noticed that he doesn't like your hand approaching his neck to grab that tab to correct because he has, rightly, associated that movement with a correction. Could that run you into trouble down the road with him being reactive towards hands coming toward that area (Collar grabs, etc)?
It's one of the reasons why I umbilical chord leash wear. (This prevents the long leash dragging problem but it also means that the correction comes from far enough away that the hand and arm reaching toward that area is not associated with anything negative.
In your experience, have you run into reactivity towards that movement down the road?
And if anyone has trouble with their puppy chewing the longer leash as it's hanging down, I find attaching an extended choke chain or small chain to the leash then clip other end to collar so that the first twelve to eighteen inches of the leash is metal, which curtails that issue.

But why does that puppy have access to any of those things to wreck them?
I have been breeding for over 20 years with working bred pups and have less damage.
When mine are chewing, they are on a leash unless they are in a kennel or a crate or an ex pen... it makes things so much simpler.

Super helpful (even fo handling a grown up dog). But are you aware of slip-leashes with a tab, *but* with a stopper in the neck-loop? German regulations demand the latter, and I've only found accepted slips with a sliding tab, which - as you describe - just don't stay put. And I feel this is the detail that would help our dog yield better (seeing prongs and e-collars are also banned).

I have a new 13 week old GSD and she is driving me crazy. I am constantly taking things out of her mouth. My biggest problem is she is always going after my older GSD. Now the older one is tolerant but every once in a while she has to correct the puppy and basically grabs her and pins her to the floor. She doesn't seem to hurt her, but it usually ends up with a yelp and I have to separate them. I'm just afraid the 100 pound adult will go too far. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She loves the cats and chickens, but the puppy is always bothering her. Is there anything I can do to stop this before someone gets hurt. How can I buy the slip leash you have in the video? It's not on your website. I have been looking for one that actually locks in place and stops sliding down my dog's neck.

I just got a chipit he’s a ankle biter, can you just use a regular leash and then Yank it a little bit to reinforce direction?

Do say leave it before, during or after the tug correction? When does the command turn into before? If the don’t leave it do you tug and say leave it a second time?

I would give the verbal command slightly before the physical correction. That way the puppy has the chance to do the right thing without being corrected. If you give it at the same time it doesn't get that chance.

I wish I had this with my puppy 3 years ago, the worst biter ever! He'd just get more riled up, we had to get real strict at 7 months old because it was real bad and he's a big boy. But yeah this seemed clear even to a small pup.

What worked for you? My puppy gets riled up more when I try to stop him from biting as well.

I had no problem with my puppy chewing on my hand coz she was easy on it until one day she clamped down on it and I saw bone and I was bleeding 😂laughed but was in pain. We still play fight and she goes for my hand now she's 1and a half years old.
