Most 'dog training' is actually training the owners how to handle dogs. Like raising a horse but never knowing how to handle one, then expecting to just throw a saddle on it and it magically knowing what to do.

This is so true! My parents got my brother a service dog and the place we got it from had him trained however we needed to follow through and keep in touch for the next steps of trading so he could fully provide his service. My parents didn’t really follow through with the training and moving on to the next steps so the dog slowly started to lose those skills. It’s so important for the owners/trainers/handlers to do their part in the dogs training for it work and be sustainable.

Of course his handling has an influence but the food holds most weight in such a change without prior training. I’m sure if the owner had some it would make a difference

This is amazing! I wonder how you can do this with dogs that aren’t food or treat motivated. My Great Pyrenees couldn’t care less about treats when we are anywhere. It seems like she can only be trained this way when we’re at home. Any amount of stress, distraction, fun, etc and she just does not care. We’ve also tried just about every kind of treat but nothing will grab her attention or get her to follow commands outside of the home (for a treat… she’ll do some commands but if there’s one she really doesn’t want to do a treat will not get her to do it). I find myself a little jealous of people who have labs and goldens whose dogs will do ANYTHING for a treat lol. We even took puppy training classes with an expert and she didn’t really have much advice for us. Just kind of shook of our questions if I’m honest. Not blaming her at all, I think she just had a lot going on at puppy class haha.
