I think is also important for people to realize the type of dog that's right for them and their families. Hardcore game and working line dogs often aren't the best for new handlers with children and it could have disastrous consequences. I'm glad she's getting the help she needs and hope she continues training him.

@@aky19832001 of course she has a blame in it. But i think its wrong calling it «blame». A handler and its dog are always in unison. It’s much like a dance. You rely on both for a successful partnership. And the human has a bigger role, as they’re suppose to be the pack leader. Dogs react to body language and assertiveness. You can’t fool a dog with just the human language. But I applaud her for getting help, I just don’t think a rescue pitbull should’ve been her choice. This dog needs an experienced handler to make him balanced again.
@@aky19832001 yes, its the same way with parents that have bratty and spoiled children that scream their lungs off at grocery stores. if they dont know how to properly handle them, doesnt matter the breed, even a border collie can get this aggressive with lack of training and foundation, as well as an owner who doesnt know how to take control. He had to teach her basic commands bc the dog didnt know them. where does the dog learn? from its owners. You're missing the channels whole stance, there are no bad dogs.
Some people just shouldn’t own dogs, let alone proper dogs.
This is one of the more realistic training sessions with an aggressive dog that I've seen. Great progress, yet lots of work remains.

I adore the solid, serious training of the owner's handling skills, and articulating this is life and death serious. Mad respect for you NOT correcting when he lunged at you because 'it's warranted' 'he doesn't like me and I grabbed his leash'. I've never seen you corner a dog and force them to act out, and I bet you never do. You exhibit so much compassion and amazingly without colluding with bad behavior.

I agree. It hurts me when Tom tells the owners that they have a really shitty relationship w their dog, and is the reason for the problems. Usually it’s just someone who loves the dog so much, but is basically enabling the bad behavior. Just like someone with an addicted Child, who gives them cash every day, instead of cutting them off. Doesn’t mean the parent doesn’t love the child. They just don’t know any better. Same here.
I was so nervous for everyone! Thankfully, Tigger’s owner brought him to Tom! He’s the exact type of dog that winds up filling shelters and eventually being euthanized. The turnaround in behavior was remarkable and it seems like the owner will follow through with what she’s learned for the good of both of them. It was so interesting Tom, to watch you keep adapting to what Tigger needed to make great progress. Crossing my fingers they continue to improve. Whew-this one is worth multiple watches!

That stressed me out just watching it! I applaud Tom for his clear communication with the owner, as harsh as it might have felt to her at the time, it is so important that she realizes how seriously her behavior/communication is inhibiting her dog’s progress. I am hopeful for the Tigger’s future!!

I did not expect this video to be so emotional. Tigger is clearly stressed by the owner and by all the intensive training process but he's pulling through so well. This is a good example that really shows the potential dogs with aggressive behavior issues have. No bad dogs!
Its tough when there is a strong willed dog, and a meek owner. Its hard to explain the problem is the owner not being able to control the dog. It's a lot like horsemanship. Hopefully she learns and improves in her handling of her dog. I wish her luck.
I think the dog deserves so much credit for his progress in a high stress environment. It took me almost a year to get my then 8month old AB rescue to be non reactive while out & obey recall when other dogs are in her sights. Patience & positive praise have been the key for our success. She's still super protective when strangers come into our back yard & only realizes that they're not a threat if I hug them {much to the relief & amazement of various workmen} lol. With commitment & love I've truly found my best friend & love her with all my heart ❤️
Owner ASKING him to heel and sit - rather than commanding him. Whew - no wonder... Great training video. She started to get better, yet needs lots of coaching. No room for error with that guy!
You have the ability to recognize discomfort, lack of
discipline, fear, and frustration in both dogs & humans. You also are 100% ok calling them out and holding them accountable. Excelent trainer! I can see why both dogs and humans trust you to lead them 💙
Thank you for correcting Tigger's owner at 15:27. That patience and slow building up of skills is SO important, especially for reactive dogs. With our reactive dog, training was like this: sit inside the house, sit inside with the tv on, sit inside when someone is outside talking, sit inside when someone is outside talking and the door starts to open, sit inside while someone outside walks by the open door.... I think you get the idea. It was like that with every skill. I hope Tigger's owner gets that point now after your classes, and good on her for trying to learn and do right by her dog.

Dangerous breed. One just randomly attacked my small poodle- owner said he was friendly....usually is. Not that day.
Oof. The intro and everything about this one is me. Perfect at home with us but as soon as someone comes in that he’s anxious about or doesn’t like, it’s a light switch. These always motivate me to continue working with our boy, and help remind me that I’m the problem that I need to work on!

I learned about appeasement & the rule of 3s after my adoption. I have learned so much from having a reactive dog, that appeared to be super sweet at adoption.

Man, I'm so glad to see you have reasonable boundaries with the dog at first instead of adding more stressors before they were ready. A lot of trainers have the mentality that they are boss and really make dogs severely uncomfortable.

I admire the owner for taking on a project like Tigger. Many would have given up. She has a lot of work ahead of her and I thought she received the feedback well. It’s a lot to take in and think about in the moment.
This is exactly how the 2 year old Akita I had a couple weeks ago was. Beautifully done and well taught. It was good to see Tom going into “drama mode” when he showcased pleading with a dog. Loved it lol dropping to the knees was a nice touch and the clients reaction was terrific.

Hot dogs across the room for an hour 😳, sorry, that made me laugh out loud when she said that. The best thing about Tom is how honest he is with the owner and how he explains everything. There is so much in this video, a couple of things I really noticed that I do and need to adjust with my own tone. Loved it.

Perfect video! Training the owner is the majority of what I do, just like Tom. I've learned countless ways to remind people to stop saying the dog's name a million times and the commands a million times. And I'm always cognizant that what comes naturally for me, for Tom and for other trainers doesn't come naturally for many of my clients. 1:1 with a dog is easy. Me with the owner(s) is more work.
I loved the first time this dog checked in with Tom. I loved the first time the dog relaxed into a down (not just crouch down with his feet under him and loaded to go). I hope this owner can continue practicing what she learned. If she does, she'll see some amazing results in my opinion. Kudos for her to realize that the prior trainers messed up and she needed Tom to fix things.

It's refreshing to see someone articulate in writing that they know what they're taking about when it comes to dog training.
I've had the pleasure of getting to know a few people who have done training as a source of income and the two I know the best told me the same thing, the most difficult part of training client's dogs is the clients themselves.
Training dogs isn't a profession of mine but I do/have helped people with their Dogs and I absolutely agree that the owners are more difficult to work with than the dogs. 😄
You read my mind with your first paragraph 😄! As a trainer, I try to help people learn how to think how their dogs think, so they can communicate better. The people who realize that I'm training THEM to train their dogs are the ones who succeed.

This makes me think of my oldest German shepherd. He is like this with everybody and other dogs, but the handful of people and dogs he knows and trusts. I wish I had someone like this to work with, so other people could see how sweet and loving he really is.
Depends how old he is, how does that saying go?
I believe you can achieve whatever you want from your dog, it's just going to take plenty of time, effort, and as I tell everyone I can, the #1 thing in dog training is patience.
Patience for your Dog, Yourself, and eveyone else involved in the process.
Given that you watched this video, that's a great start. Mr. Davis is a very acute man and that is PARAMOUNT when it comes to dog training.
I could go deep-down the rabbit hole with you about the process but I'll make some simple suggestions, watch his videos and legitimately take notes. You'll see the formula within a few videos.
My next suggestion is joining the online network he mentions in his videos. Although I'm not a member and have no knowledge of it, other than the fact that it exists, I would say it's an invaluable resource if you are willing to make the effort in helping your GSD be the dog you would like it to be.
I don't mean this to come across as an insult but the slogan of his company, "No Bad Dogs," is demonstrated in every one of his videos of I've seen. The dogs aren't the problem, the owners are.
There's another VERY well known trainer that has the same same slogan but in different words. "I rehabilitate dogs, I train people."- Cesar Milan
Dog training is psychology. Some call it conditioning, some call it behavior modification.
Between trainers the methods and terminology may differ but to achieve the desired results there are things that will be similar.
I'll end it with that and I wish you the best.
Tom's training can be summed up in one very important message that he uses ALL the time. "Hold the dog accountable for making a bad decision"!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Learning how to lead and handle our dogs, is not only a necessity for our dogs sake and everyone around us, but a priceless transferable life skill for us as a person.

Amazing video. I feel like anyone with a dog who has behavior issues probably faces the same issues as this owner a lot. We feel like we ARE doing the commands and corrections, but in the end we need someone to watch us and train us on what to react to and how to best react and lead.
I don’t know how you can stay calm, that is one scary Dog. She is lucky that she came for your professional help before someone gets seriously hurt. I’m afraid for the children and any friends they bring home. I hope you can help her and the dog.

All of us who 'get it', and who are nodding along while Tom explains, are like "Why aren't the owners 'getting it?'" We forget sometimes that our instincts are better and we have more experience than your average dog owner. I applaud this woman for making multiple efforts and her commitment to getting the best help possible for her dog rather than just abandoning it.
I’ve encountered dogs like this when I’m out walking my dog. It’s terrifying when you know an owner has no control over a power house dog. Kudos to the owner for doing something about it. Tom, you are fantastic with holding owners accountable.

I like the way you communicate with the owners. I struggle with that, especially with an opinionated owners. I don't see any content on this topic any where. I really am enjoying your videos. I am a 59 year old female. Last summer I had a stroke. I have an 8 year old neutered male Australian Shepherd who is really dog reactive. I’m currently am walking him daily in my driveway on a daily basis to get him some exercise. I am afraid to walk him because of his reactivity. I am beginning to feel a little bit better about my ability to maintain control. Before my stoke we were walking about 2 miles daily. He isn’t terribly reactive to people,except for the mailman. I spent a lot of money for a year’s training, but that company went out of business. He was able to attend group classes without too much reactivity.

I teared up watching Tom work with Tigger, knowing that Tom could have changed the trajectory of Tigger's life if he'd met him MUCH earlier.
Tigger seems like the sum of many, many people's bad decisions, and consequently, HE has become a living-breathing-biting bad decision on four legs.
I fear this poor dog will harm someone if he is not rehomed to a more well-trained, assertive & CONSISTENT person. Sometimes love is not enough to "fix" a problem like this behavior disaster.

I love seeing progress you make for these dogs! It's so important even just to show that dogs that people think are a lost cause can be helped. Dogs can't tell us how they feel but dogs that people give up on must experience so much pain and confusion. Every dog rescued through behavior therapy like this is a saved life

I really Love what you do. I find there are few dog trainers I like but you are one of my top faves. I love how respectful you are with your clients and their dogs. And I have never seen you hurt a dog when working with them. I have been watching for a couple of years now and I am always inspired watching you work.
I also have a terrier who is reactive and feel just how this person does, I just found your channel and looking forward to learn and try some of these things with him.
I now have much more of an understanding of your state of mind and the way it can affect your dog. Tom explains this so clearly that it's transparent.

This really helped, thanks so much for putting these on CZcams. I left for college and all the work I did with my rescue was gone. But just within two days she's already doing better than with my parents. This will be even better to build her confidence around people and dogs.

Wowzzza! Really difficult case. A lot of progress was made. I'm concerned about the owner truly understanding her role in the process, and being able to make the necessary changes for long term success. She certainly came to the right trainer! I commend your commitment to helping both the owner and the dog, Tom! This would make an interesting case for a follow up video. I really hope they are successful!

Terrific video all round here. Tigger's improvement despite being so nervous was incredible. The owner seemed to take every bit of advice on board and acknowledge it is on her (not easy to do). The handling skills will come with time and practice but acknowledgement is the first step. Loved this video Tom as it is so realistic and shows how much work is needed to get even the smallest improvements and that a case like this will always require management throughout that dogs life. Really enjoy the way you coach the owner as well. I find I can get really good results when I handle a clients dogs but being able to coach them to do it is still something I am learning to do so it's a privelege to see it done so well. I'm a new subscriber and am so grateful for your channel! My adopted dog was abused and neglected and has been leash reactive for majority of the time I've had him. It got worse during COVID when we spent all day everyday together. I've applied some of your basic foundational training techniques (this video has been specifically helpful) and applied them which is showing positive progress in the last couple weeks. I’ve caught wind of something called the “Pelly Puppy Roundup” and what that is just disgusts me. People have these unfixed dogs running loose 24/7 and every spring, they hire someone to shoot and kill all the puppies and roaming dogs because they’ve become such a danger to people.
We do our best to pick up these dogs and take them to the shelter for rehoming but not all of them get this chance.
It breaks my heart to see this and I know these dogs deserve another chance to find a new home. There really are no bad dogs. All these animals have been horribly mistreated and need help.
This has got to be my favorite video yet! The owner was gracious, understanding and accepting of not only taking direction for the dog, but for herself as well. When training, is it a transaction between dog and owner that has to work. The fact that it was brought home that this is only the beginning of the training, and that just because the dog does it a few times, does not mean perfection is there. Lots of work still to be done! Love it! Thank you so very much!!
This is such a good video, showing how important tone of voice is. Praise tone, assertive tone for do smtg and obey, and correction tone + timely move like a pop. Timing and tone are everything. I still haven’t gotten that right.

Tom I’ve been following you since the beginning I want to congratulate you for all your hard work and helping people to have a better relationship with their dogs . I have shared your videos to people I see struggling with their dogs because you break everything down that all levels of people can understand where their at with their training. You have helped me with my Swiss White shepherds that are a reactive breed I have fine tuned so much with your techniques I can walk all 3 in public. I hope one day you come to Australia as many trainers here only do positive training and their are a lot of dogs (people) 😂 here with issues and dogs are getting dropped of at the pounds put down or rehomed and bounce from home to home , vets also heavily medicate dogs here it’s seems to be their go to we really need you The dogs need you!
