This is my go to radio for an all analog portable radio that delivered consistently over the past few months. MW and SW reception has been an absolute treat! FM has been good but not great like the Sangean SR-35 or the Radio Shack Optimus I reviewed.
I will let you know that my upcoming review of its brother, the R-909 maybe replacing this radio as my day to day analog radio.
So watch both videos and judge for yourself. You may like the layout of this radio more. The power switch independent of the volume knob is a plus, and its band select and coverage is greater then the 909.

do you know any radio device give more strong signal and give more radio chanal
I love this radio. It's so sensitive and I've used it in rural areas as well as in cities. It's so nice to tune through on pure analogue just to see whats available in an area before I get one of my digital receivers to lock it in. MW/AM is awesome on this.
I agree, nothing beats the smooth tuning. I still recommend the radio for "First Timers" :)
Thanks for sharing. I ordered one for testing!
Just bought it, came today. FM reception isn’t great, poor selectivity. MW is nice, SW is also good. Thanks for the video!
Tip: lift up the external antenna even on AM for better reception (no need to extend it), as it interferes somewhat with the internal AM antenna. Same as the DR920c...
I ordered one on 3/10/23. $7.00! The only problem I'll have is the huge gaps in SW coverage. Cheap & fun! Great video.
Going around, and winter visits then one day. The road ran out. Had to wait for a tow truck. And that was a 9 hour wait. So out of my pocket came my r9012 . And it ran all the wait. One thing I had too do was add 2 meter wire with gator clip and spare battery( keep power cells out of radio less in leaks ) so we found a BBC program, and weather/ news channel.. and a. Few ham station. So now it's my "buddy" when I go out tks. For putting me on to this rig Sgt Williams retired.
thank you for the video....this radio is one of the best radios I have... I can easily give 4.5 stars .....thanks again
Ordered one. Looking forward to find out how it performs. Thanks for your time.
cool, this was one of my earlier videos, I think I should revisit this radio.
I just got this radio in the mail today (two weeks even though I paid the Amazon shipping charge!). It`s very much worth the price. It works VERY well on shortwave but is a bit less sensitive than my analog Sony radios on the upper AM band but not by much. I haven`t tested it much though and after a burn in period with alkaline batteries reception might improve. It has the look, sound and feel of a much more expensive radio in my opinion. I paid over $40.00 for a similar radio from Radio Shack in the 1990s but FM reception and sound was better. That radio lasted for 20 years of heavy use and abuse and survived a LOT of fishing and camping trips before the AM and shortwave bands failed due to corrosion. I think it was a rebranded Sangean model.
I have a really old Borg Johnson that is just like this and it uses two d cells. Same switch on bottom
I'm picking up single side band signals on 40 and 20 m I just got it today. I can understand some of them
I used to pick up SSB with mine also, have another one on the way.
Todderbert, I ordered one of these because I`m trying to get as many true analog radios as I can while they`re still being made. I`m hoping the AM reception is great. I`ve heard a lot of people say it can be a hot receiver if aligned properly. Mine cost $22.00 but I had a credit so it and $18.00 headphones only cost $14.00. I love the little Sony ICF-P26 more and more. I use it every day. I got lucky I suppose and got one that was built and aligned right at the factory. It has a good strong signal and a nice tone.
My P26 has a much more bassy tone than my P36. You said your experience was the opposite. My P36 is tinny compared to my P26. But...my P36 is much less prone to RF interference and sounds a bit better using earphones at times. I love them both though...such great battery life. I always leave one of them on while sleeping using rechargeable batteries and so far only the P26 has needed a recharge. Very hard to believe! My digital radios run the batteries down in only a few days.
I got mine and I have some gripes. Mine is easily overpowered and isn't super selective on FM. One of my main stations that I listen to is impossible because it overlaps with another station even though they're a few digits apart.
The positives are that it's so sensitive that it may just be able to pick out weak signals, so if you want to listen to SW or AM, this might be a pretty good radio
yes the fm is pretty bad but imho the great am reception makes up for it
Getting one for my bug out bag!
Just got one today, it's a great radio in my books all except for the FM. It's definitely not an ideal FM broadcast reciever as the one strong 50kW station I have only 2 miles away bleeds all over the dial. Other than that though, I'm definitely satisfied as I do mostly MW and SW listening anyway.
I own the combination of Tecsun R-9012, the bigger brother with digital display Tecsun DR-920c and the external reel-antenna an-05 also made by Tecsun. It works fantastic, both of the little radios do a real good job on am and sw and are also good enough on fm. Both are hard to beat in this price-category of 20-25 bucks. I compare those little Tecsuns with the old "Grundig yacht-Boys". great quality for low budget. I personally give them both a 4.5 out of 5, with all the pros and cons. for me the most important aspect to choose the 9012 and 920c is the wide frequency range (75m-13m band, splitted) in comparsion to the Tecsun-909, 911, 912, 9270 and the other Tecsun analog-radios for nearly the same price. However, thanks a lot for the reviews, 73 and good dx! greetings from germany!
thank you DE1DGK, enjoy that Tecsun. I own one also. Not a bad little radio. I enjoy tuning my R-912.
Ive been strogly considering the 380 or r9700dx

Great video thanks
I wanna buy one now!
Ordered a second one. Consistent quality.
Good to hear!
@@todderbert I mailed my first one (and a Sony ICF-P36 and AA batteries with charger) to a friend in another town who loves listening to AM but has little money to buy a radio. He was using a Kaito mini radio that was falling apart. I wanted to get another one for AM and shortwave. My Tecsun R9700DDX is a piece of expensive junk. Paid nearly $60.00 for an FM radio because that`s all that still works after three months.
That's a nice radio I have it an love it
It’s outta the box 📦😁😁
He comprado una. y siendo analogica, tiene muy buena recepción; recuerdo su nota sobre la Tecsun DR - 920 C, donde establece la similitud entre estas dos radios.
The ferrite bar for AM is long in this radio. I think it`s about 4 inches.
Reminds me of the standard radio of Japan© it was a three bander(fm,am, and short wave) circa late 60s-70s. It went every where I went. My duffel bag critter. To say. Wife didn't like it. I did though it was in a "it's leather"case. And many of miles of use. Hope I get that much use. From the R 9012. De kv4li
I ordered a second Tecsun R-9012. Quality seems to be consistent.
Just picked up a 9012, after deciding between it and the DR920. I was really digging the basic analog look over the digital layout.
What a hot AM DX performer! My new favorite radio! I did a bit of tuning tonight and ID'd several new stations. Also beautifully picked up some old DX favorites that are usually reserved for my SRIII.
From my location in Central California, the 9012 pulled in 1010 CBC Calgary 1,300 miles (a usually familiar DX on a good night with SRIII). More usuals... 660 Navajo Nation Window Rock, AZ 800 miles. 1000 KOMO Seattle 700 miles. 1160 KSL Salt Lake City 700 miles. 1030 KTWO Casper, Wyoming 1,100 miles. A new ID at 730 CHMJ Vancouver 960 miles. Another new ID at 890 KDXU St Gerorge, Utah 620 miles. < these new ID's are 10-30khz away from stronger locals.
Super impressed! What a sensitive and selective radio. I mean the 9012 seriously locked onto the stations when tuned in and for great distance. Rivaling my SRIII which has served me very well over the years for superb AM DX.
Shortwave was great too and very responsive to a long wire. Excellent!
I ordered one. A radio listener never has enough receivers :)
This is an impressive little receiver for AM and SW. It was one of my first modern radios.
The FM is ok, not great, especially in areas close to towers.
I m also confused in
Tecsun R-9012 & Tecsun Dr 920c.
Plz Guied.
Does this radio outperform the 9700 for MW?
Thanks for your video. Which radio should I pick for some random sw/mw but pretty decent on FM? I live in Italy. Thank you so much
Try the Tecsun PL 310et.
You can try XHDATA D-219.
Todderbert, hey I am new to SW listening and bought this little radio on your recommendation. How do I actually reach the desired frequencies, such as 5850 or 17720, etc. The channels are broken down as SW1 to SW10 and contain a certain frequency set. I don't know how I would convert the exact frequency to what is displayed on the radio. I know on the higher end ones you can just dial in the exact number but not the case on this one. Please help. Thanks!
if the frequency is located in the displayed bands you should be able to tune them in depending on solar conditions. I would attache a long wire of around 22' to the whip antenna to improve gain on fainter signals.
1:11 it just says "Dongguan City Tecsun General Electric Ltd. Co" so nothing exciting really 😂
I got mine today I put it on a long wire outside and I'm picking up very intelligible single side band on 40 and 20 m it's almost better than the sea crane with single side band almost
Sir, can you say ferrite bar length in 9012 ?
Just wondering if a chain link fence would work as a antenna with a wire to it clipped onto the extendable antenna with a aligator clip?
Try it
You would be surprised at what works with shortwave as far as antennas makeshift antenna s
Even old bedsprings are surprising.
Does this have AC input?
Sir, I have one major question, from analog circuitry we can choose 9012 for AM,SW without doubt. Then digital circuitry can you choose one model from C crane and tecsun at reliable price.(for me AM, SW very important). Please answer
C.Crane CC Skywave, Tecsun PL-330.
@@todderbert thanks alot
This or the Kaito KA321 ? about the same quality and functions (minus two bands)? Thanks.
This radio does very well on AM and SW as well as being all analog. The Kaito is a DSP radio with an analog dial, it is nice on all the bands and has FM stereo. I would pick the Kaito for the daily carry all-rounder and the Tecsun for AM and SW listening.
Tecsun R-1012 please??
What is the black bar in the dial for from 0 to 10?
Scale..
Hello sir, what radio i can buy for best shortwave tecsun r 9012 or pl 380 ?
PL-380, the bandwidth controls are great, and being a dsp radio you will have greater selectivity.
Thanks sir for information👍👍👍
Got both. PL-380 in 2018 and R-9012 two days back from Hong Kong. Both are great radios for their prices. 380 is more consistent with SW Bands and Bandwidth selection in MW and SW. 9012 is pure analog with 10 SW Bands but trimmed. Both got good sound and reception.
I recently got one of these. FM was absolutely horrible. I didn't even check out MW or SW after seeing how horrible FM was. I sent it back. I got a Tecsun R-9700DX. Much better radio. You do get what you pay for
Sir, I want ask you one serious question, I have planning to buy tecsun AN 05 antenna for this 9012. Is it suitable or not? Somebody saying it cause overload. Please answer my question
If you get overloading, move the wire indoors, or wind it up some.
I love this radio but wish there was a light in the tuning field/grid for listening in the dark. Anyone know of any similar radios that have an illuminated tuning field/grid?
The Larger R9700DX Does. czcams.com/video/pR9UaloEljU/video.html
Tecsun R 9012 or Tecsun R909, what do you think?I am more interested in medium and shortwaves.
Go with R9012. R909 got only 7 SW Bands. R9012 got 10.
@@h.joshi_ but I've heard the 9012 isn't very sensitive 🤔. Do you have other opinions?. I was digging for the R7910 but it seems to be discontinued.
@@anulearntech For FM I will not recommend it at all. But for AM listening (Both MW and SW) it is a pretty solid performer from analog IC's perspective. If you want an all-rounder in the same budget you can go for 909. But the SW bands will be limited into that one. Cheers.
thanks, will consider this.@@h.joshi_

Hi Sir I'm confused in
Tecsun R-9012 &
Kaito WRX-911.
Plz Suggest Which One Having Good Reception, Sound, Sensitivity.
Plz Guide .📻❤️🇮🇳
Does this do stereo or mono? Thanks. 👍
Mono
Is it stereo for FM through headphones?
FM Mono
Which is better this tecsun or xhdata328
I would want this radio. Mainly because I like the AA operation and that it is all analog.
my radio not working with inserting battery
Is the tecsun r909 similar in am and sw?
It is, but the 9012 has more Shortwave coverage.
@@todderbert well thank you for replying and for your work with short wave radios. I enjoy mostly Am This will be my first SW radio and I will get the tecsun r9012.
Ordering tonight 😊
Which has the edge, this or the 909??
This on SW and MW, the 909 on FM.
So,between R909 and R9012,which one do you recommend?I'll be primarily using it to listen to FM and AM mainly and a bit of SW dxing sometimes.
Get the R909 all the way. It has great FM, the R9012 is not good on that band. Both have good MW reception. The SW is a little better on the 9012.
Thanks.Just ordering a R909.Hope to get it soon.BTW liked your review,and subscribed instantly.Keep 'em coming.😀
Your Welcome, glad to have you aboard! Enjoy the shows.
todderbert Thanks.Really enjoying your reviews.Congrats for reaching 1k subscribers milestone.🙂
Thank you Anupam Biswas. Fun times on the Radio Waves to come :)
Does this one have Dsp or is it all analog
All Analog.
The sticker is probably so anyone's tampering with the screws will come the warranty 😀
I'm confused why did you do a SW radio review if you were not going to go through the SW frequencies with a good signal....
One of my firsts, a revisit or 2.0 will be done. I did film a daytime SW and MW scan: czcams.com/video/4XnaHky1ZLQ/video.html
I am hearing a Spy Number Station on 11.635 at EST anyone else?
Is it available in India?
Possibly, through eBay. bit.ly/TecsunR9012
Meu radio nao liga. Noa fuciona
This radio blows the Tecsun R9700dx away.
Oh really? That's sad. Could be a bad copy I guess. People have varying opinions about the 9700dx 😐😒
Its battery life was good enough..
Few days back I bought Xhdata D-808 radio from Amazon India for $110(₹8970) I tried on AliExpress for ₹6150 but they refused to give delivery to India because of Covid 19 virus issue. So I purchased it from local Amazon website.. because I get so excited about it's cool features reviews. But now I returned it! Because in my area there's no FM coverage, only one mediumwave station playable at daytime, no longwave, no AIR band coverage! Only I can hear Shortwave clearly in this radio in my area. Honestly it's not this radio's mistake.. it's mistake of my area where local radio network coverages are not good at all.. sorry to say in my area this radio not worth single dollar.. and it's not sense to spend $110 dollar for this radio only to listen few shortwave stations.. I can buy a best smartphone on that price.. I'm not saying this radio is dumb. It's just super radio I really agree. But not in my area. So I returned the xhdata d-808 and ordered simple analog radio "Tecsun R-9012" from Amazon India.. yes I did.. I have no more hope in mediumwave and FM coverage in my area. So finally I'm buying this Tecsun R-9012 analog radio only for Shortwave reception.. I hope I made a good choice..
