  • The Tecsun R9012 AM FM Shortwave portable radio has become the staple by which many recommendations are made. It is an outstanding performer in the evening, but during the day it may need some extra help in the form of a loop to gain some distant station reception.

I would still recommend this radio as an excellent primer into shortwave listening on a casual basis. The audio is superior to the R9710. Though if you need FM stereo I would recommend the 9710.
    Thank you for watching.

Tip: lift up the external antenna even on AM for better reception (no need to extend it), as it interferes somewhat with the internal AM antenna. Same as the DR920c....

Look into the R909 also. If I remember I enjoyed that one as well.

The MW and SW performance is decent for the price, but the FM band is full of image signals.

@@todderbert Pete. Finally I got it with me. A really good little an inexpensive radio! Dial alignment not bad for it price, except 31m Band where 10 Mhz can be found near 9.9. I saw the same bug on Two Hands and a Radio video. MW very decent and with the help of a Tecsun AN-100 works very well and good sound!. Thanks for sharing Pete and Happy New Year!

You should have shown how it performs on shortwave using just the built in antenna.

Hello I just bought one and want to use a wire to increase SW reception. How long I can go without overloading and risk damaging the receiver? Thank you!

Probably a 22' reel type antenna that clips to the radio's antenna mast. A Kaito T-1 is what I use in most of my SW band scans. At Amazon USA: amzn.to/2YoEOeb

I seen videos of the Sparc SHD-TX2 by other users.

I've decided I do not want to purchase this radio. Someone can from my wishlist, but if not I will pass. Too many HAM radio items are in my head atm. Plus HD radios are not good at my location.
