  • See how to remove the cylinder heads head on your Yamaha F225 in this video from Boats.net.
This engine is in need of serious work, and in this video, John will show you how to teardown the powerhead on your F225. If you’re replacing the head gasket on your F225 or doing a complete powerhead rebuild on your Yamaha outboard, this will help you get things broken down.
We’ll start by removing the belt, and then we’ll remove the exhaust plates on our F225. Then we’ll work on removing the cylinder heads on our outboard. That’ll involve removing the valve covers, the camshafts, and then removing the heads. Then we’ll remove the tappets and valves, where we’ll get a closer look at what’s going on in this engine.

Nice to see major rebuild videos.
I understand for some years and models it does not make financial sense to do major rebuilds, even for demonstration purposes. Not just because of cost, but mainly because of certain key parts are longer available.
Might I suggest the following because there are tons of them out there, including mine:
1980's to 1998 OMC V4 90 degree crossflow (90 hp to 115 hp). Major rebuild, ignition diagnosing, fuel delivery diagnosing, VRO oiling testing/diagnosing, and possibly cover gearcase re-assembly (bearings/seals)
Keep the videos coming, I'm sure there will be more things in the near future I will be buying from Boats.net and Partzilla.

I think a great suggestion would be how do you keep all the parts organized as you strip down the motor, there are so many numerous parts that would need to be put in some kind of succession when you rebuild the motor after taking it competely apart.

After a rebuild like this how many more hours you think this motor can run? Thanks

these engines are non-interference engines, so you can do whatever you want with the camshafts without risking damage. it says so in the very first pages of the workshop manual. -yamaha-tech

Hey John , I have 2005 F225 , the bottom port cylinder has a spark plug with nothing left on the end all gone .
I launched my boat warmed up the engine for 15 minutes, , switched it off just to be sure of a restart, and nothing would turn over .
Took the boat home , I needed the breaker bar on the spark plug , the engine still won’t turn over with all the plugs removed .
Do you think my engine has any chance of a piston replacement. Thank you Eric
