  • So the day I want to go lobstering start the boat up on the hose before leaving the house make sure all is good and motor was running rough like it had a miss.
decided to pull the plugs and see if plug was dirty or bad or coil pack wasn't firing etc. pulled #6 spark plug and water comes pouring out of the hole ....... so here we go with fixing the head gasket issue on the motor without pulling power head was actually extremely easy with minimal mechanical knowledge you could pull this off !!!

Question for you. I have an old 1990 Yamaha 40hp outboard. I am replacing the head/water jacket assembly. Out of 10 head bolts, 8 of them broke. I am working on drilling out the bolts. Can I use grade 8 hardware store bolts for the head? Also, would it hurt to put anti seize on the new bolts?

Honestly I'm not a professional mechanic by any means and if they're available I would try to order factory bolts to replace them with because the torque specs are based off of the stretch of the bolt it's pretty precisely engineered. Also I can't see anti seize hurting I know when I put head studs in a car I rebuilt the arp studs came with a lubricant to make sure the bolts go in properly

Looks like you can still order the bolts online on the motor should be a plate with the exact model number and serial number and you can look through the diagrams to find the bolt you need this was just a random 1990 40hp yamaha

I would have loved that you'd had someone else holding the camera or a stand. You really make it simple, but unfortunately there's a lot of areas not very clear of where you're taking a screw from. I have the same problem with my engine and nobody wants to deal with the head gasket replacement. I'd be willing to buy you an air ticket, host you in my house and pay you for your labor. Pls let me know.

Unfortunately I have a new baby at the house and not feasible to leave to help you at the moment your best bet would be to buy a service manual it outlines the entire procedure you need to follow to accomplish the job along with torque specs as you remove bolts bag and label them so you know exactly where they go
