- In this video Ron's Yamaha 115HP Yamaha four stroke outboard has water in the oil so I take the head off to see what the likely cause is.

The outboard dilemma; an expensive fix on an expensive outboard still leaves the owner with an old outboard. Well stated, Stu.
It is hard to know which way to go sometimes. All the birds of this outboard still have value at a wreckers.
Its the boat version of
"Nothing as expensive as a cheap Mercedes"
As a new Tech, it drove home the fact of when to walk away from a repair.
I'm assuming, too much pitting on the cam and lifters to warrant a clean up and re use.
I’ve owned one 2-stroke Yamaha and one 4-stroke Yamaha and I much prefer the 2-strokes. I think that they were the best 2-strokes ever made.
I don't have a clue about engines, other than topping up the usual suspects, your "she'll be right" way of life,is really refreshing Stu,and so is your gentle nature with everything you do, riveting stuff.
Is Aussies a proper name? I have great admiration of your work ethic and how you never waste. Me and my 2001 40hp Yamaha owe you.
awe.....cool you found the old footage of Dotty....great bonus footage Stu, can't wait to see you and Seeker steaming together!
I've never seen open heart surgery performed on a beach before.
well done your overnighter to the goldcoast ,cant wait for the vid cheers dunc
I'm only halfway through the video and thinking how much I love my 2-stroke. Yes it's thirsty, noisy and smoky but my gosh it's so much simpler to tear down and repair.
They are pretty straight forward mate.
This vid helps convince me to stay with 2 stroke outboards! I totally agree with you!
I’ve worked in rural areas in Mexico along the coast and the fishermen use a lot of these motors, it’s amazing how long they can keep them going.
Love when you work on outboards! Keep up the good work Stu!
Thanks Stu, Looking forward to engines troubleshooting and possible resolutions.
You're above my paygrade.... It's hard enough finding the E-clip when it hit the floor in the shop. But when you do it, boy I gotta tell you that a specific discipline finding it lol... Great educational video as always....
Nice bonus vid.
The paper fuel pump explanation was amazing. I always get so much out of those explanations you do. More of those please :-)
Thanks Stu. You are a fountain of knowledge! Plus I love your girls.
Thanks Wally!
Love the outboard video...
Not even Bank Holiday Monday yet here in Blighty, Dangar drops....Yeeeah Hah 😁
Enjoy. :)
As a longtime auto mechanic I never shave or sand aluminum heads with overhead cams. If warped and sanded flat cam failure is always guaranteed. Unless you rebore cam bearings they are almost always out of line when reassembled... If shade tree repair necessary on tight budget. Fill bad scratches with JB weld use razor blade to remove excess... best of luck...
You need to introduce heat for aluminium block
Yes, sending it off to a cylinder head reconditioner is probably the only realistic option. Will save the DIY approach for the two stroke head.
Yet another Stu vid that heightens my anxiety levels about purchasing a second hand outboard
Island outboards get a hard life, they aren’t really representative of your average second Hand engine.
Outboards to put together. Excellent!
Yes, have all the parts for the two stroke ready to go now.
@@DangarMarine I've got a project of my own atm. Have a V6 Mercury in pieces to rebuild. First time I've done this. May be suffering a bit of analysis paralysis.
More videos is great. Keep em coming!
some nice exploration into when to replace a Motor, SRV seeker is such a jem, and bird baths are always on top of of the list.
Great show. Looks like a great time for a new motor, everything is expensive but a motor quiting on a bad weather day is never a good thing, Jeff in LA USA
brilliant as always!
Thanks for the bonus D squad😀
Welcome. :)
You have 10mm sockets down there? I guess that’s where all mine have rolled.
They all roll down to the Southern Hemisphere.
They must all end up in my engine bay somehow.. every time i work on my car there is one rolling around
Both 10 and 13mm! 😄
Great video!
I wonder if all of my 6mm drill bits are there also
What happens when a motor gets really hot is the rings lose tension. They're supposed to be brittle (as you know if you've ever broken one using a stupid ring expander instead of putting them on with your fingers - I blushingly digress) but interestingly what happens is when the motor gets really hot if you remove one is it can be stretched out like a piece of wire. When they get to that point they can't hold their shape properly. They obviously need their shape but it is so combustion pressure can properly force them into the cylinder wall gaining a gas tight seal. When the tension is lost or partially lost you get blow-by and of course low compression.
Interesting thanks for putting that out.
You’re welcome. :)
Thanks, Stu...
Great one Stu love ya work cheers 🎣
Thanks Joe.
Thank you for this
Welcome. :)
Swear I still hear “dingo stew here” 😂
And that’s ok. He’s my favorite grumpy Aussie.
I reckon it’s “Disco Stu”
Gold
I hear, dangas ju here
yeah, me too.. lol
3:46 - the difference between a Two-stroke and 4-stroke fuel pump - I did not know that, but when I do get to own either a 2- or 4-stroke I now know. Thanks Stu.
The cruise is doing you good mate you look much fitter stay safe
It is certainly good to take a break for a while.
I'm not a pro but I had the same problem , it was a thermostats problem and for 2 years my oil is clear
...good one, keep safe..
Thanks mate, you too.
This was great to show what’s possible for us novice experts🙌🏻
DangarStu in da house!
Your a good bloke stu😊👍
It was a barter deal. 😊
@@DangarMarine I did wonder👍
Keeping that outboard as a running secondary mightn't be a bad idea, especially if he relies on his boat to get on and off the island. Might even be able to get a case of beer loaning it out. Post-roll was awesome too - Doug(?) is hilarious when he's in a good mood. Good to see Dottie too. 👍
Indeed, could be a good backup.
Hopefully you’ll be able to make Dave’s launch in a few months. I forgot how close Daisy and Dotty were.
Yes, they did get along really well. 😊
Thanks
I hate the smell of tectyl. I always used to keep a can of degreaser with it as the nozzle always seemed to block up, I just swapped it over when it started to clog up, parts I tectyled usually needed 2 cans though. Love the vids. Cheers Mav
I've just done 2 earlier (Carby) versions of this motor, same problem in both. Corrosion was the cause in both cases, both on the mating surface of the head where it contacts the gasket. I did get them both welded and machined back for not a terrible amount of money. 1 of the engines is for a friend and is being sold soon, the other one is mine, whether I keep it or ditch it, I haven't decided yet. I don't think the anodes really do their job in these engines, to be honest, in both cases they looked brand new. A couple of things learnt; the "lifters" in the 2 I did were actually buckets and 25mm shims, and if you have to adjust the valve clearances, good luck, because the shims are ex Japan if genuine, and around $400 for a set, and not a lot cheaper off eBay. A better way is to get a machine shop to skim the tops off the valves to get the clearance back. The other thing I learnt is this engine is based off a Ford Zetec engine and a lot of internals are interchangeable - and cheaper from Ford than from Yamaha. (Check the camshafts, they likely have a Ford logo cast into them). I think if it was my "Daily driver" I'd probably just replace the outboard too
Bonus vid!
Still like to see if you can get it running again.
Quality
handy video same motor as i have hope i dont get that problem though
Must be a pain do the job with the boat bobbing about.
Shorts like these are fine! If you have a few more in the storage drive or while out in the future doing this and that capture a little video and send it our way.
Thanks mate. Always been a bit shy of putting these brief, unplanned videos out there but it seems a waste to just delete the footage. I figure in the end that even if a few people like them it is worth editing them up. :)
@@DangarMarine It makes sense for long term viewers - we can work out the connections easy enough. The first time visitor will just find some of it a bit random perhaps but no big deal - everything is random on youtube until you watch a channel long enough...
I came to the Brooklyn jetty to look at Dangar, wow so may cars and so few spots, where do the locals park when they leave their cars on the mainland?
Love the ironic salvage repartee.
Eventually we will just be on missions trying to salvage our reputations. 😝
Just rebuilt the gear on one of these. The design of the propeller housing is...scary. I had to use every tool in my arsenal to get it out. Never been removed, apparently. Fun times... Runs great, though.
You must have magnets for fingers working over water like that 🤔
Works pilling up on you also ! I only have 6 to do before the 15th ! Nooo problem ! Lol
Good luck Dave!
awesome - anyone knows how to put it back together - meaning making sure the timing is set correctly?
You picked the wrong time to make the trip to SV Seeker. I'm not far from him (half day drive)and I would have liked to be there but we were in Greece. But at least we took a ferry the island and back so a little boat content there.
Sorry to have missed you, next time!
I'm in a similar spot with an older two-stroke, do I fix it or do I replace it. In my case, I am going to fix it but I don't rely on my boat for daily transportation. If it keeps having failures though, it will be headed for the junkpile.
Would vinegar help to dissolve the corrosion/build up? I've never had to deal with marine build up like that before
f115lb same as mine
RIP Dottie
I feel anxious working (and watching other people work) on outboards in the water because if I drop something I know its gone forever
In the water you must be a good bloke.
How do you get all of the Tectyl out of the engine? It´s really sticky stuff... I usually just use engine oil as a corrosion preventer.
I can not find next video on this f115 project. Does it exist?
Surprised!
What about tuning the engine while you're in there? :) Lots of nice and not so expensive ways to improve some outboards. What are your thoughts?
A performance tuning video would be an interesting one to do.
What did you sacrifice to which god in order for all the bolts to come out so easily?
(Also I'm seriously impressed at you pulling the head while tied off on a beach. Kudos.)
Sometimes you are lucky. ;)
I haven't seen all your older videos yet. Do you have one explaining how and what to check to know if you're buying a good used outboard? I want to buy one but I'm afraid of getting screwed over. I don't know much about engines and have no one that could help.
There is a video on buying a used boat in there somewhere.
I have a unrelated question for Dunbar marine about my dads 86 mercury 75hp outboard sorry to ask here .he had 2 bottom cylinders that wernt firing he replaced the coils then the stator then he saw the trigger wires burnt inside the sleeve.when he replaced the trigger that fixed the firing problem but it runs wide open .hes 78 and has had this mercury 75 on a alluminacraft since about 1987 and usually he can find the problem but he cant now please help
A Stuck open thermostat will make the engine run cold. And, will make water in the oil, and emulsify the oil.
Tho with all that corrosion I can't see that it was running cold. 🤔🤔🤔
Hey there dangar and viewers ive looked at i boats and yammy threads in the boat community but I can’t seem to find the thread pitch of my 2015 Yamaha T25 it came with an extra long extension (which I’ve removed) but the extension bolts were threaded differently on both ends.presumably a fine and a course anyway wondering if you or a viewer might know.
Cheers mate .
Stu! Try some hydrochloric acid, absolutely brilliant on marine deposits. They sell it as "brick and mortar cleaner" for a few dollars .. or as "RydLime marine descaler" for stupid expensive ... don't junk it, just run some brick acid through it, I reckon you can make a decent engine out of that!
I had similar problem.yamaha f90 with 4500 working hours.sound alarm was malfunctioned and nobody bother to look on tach if there are any codes.after a day at sea come back to the port and it didnt start.after opening oil stick to check a lot of emulsion was coming out.green milky stuff.i didnt even sent ut to mechanic, cose it did work a lot,but i gues it was head gasket due to iverheat
Yes, when an outboard gets to a certain age you are often better going straight to replacement with a problem like this. It is never going to be a cheap fix.
I'm not a gynaecologist but I'll take a look anyway.....
Lol
A couple of screws loose? Nope lost the screws. Lol
Flush with fresh water after use!
Not so easy to do in the river access to mains water.
@@DangarMarine I see.
Stu, do you have a tip to get the nuts off the tilt tube on a evinrude v4? The starboard side is loose, but the port nut is frozen and the whole tube spins. I need to get the port nut off so I can attach a hose and force oil through my steering cable. I can't remove the cable because the side of the boat is too close to the engine. I do not have the tools or expertise to remove the engine. The front of the cable is not accessible as it is part of the rack for the steering. Please help.
Stu how did the water get into the oil
was it in the fuel previously, did it enter
through rain leak, was it seawater through a crack/opening,
was the oil contaminated, was the motor at fault .. etc???
Onya 👍👍
It comes up through the cooling passages for the engine and passes either through a corrosion hole or a blown head gasket into the oil passages.
@@DangarMarine Ahhh gotya, thanks Stu, Never throw away any
of your footage, they all worth viewing. How was the Sanctuary Cové
Boat Show ??
Interesting vid Stu, is the corrosion build up in the cooling passages because of no fresh water flushing after use?, that's my guess.
"Harry Dwyer" his latest vid on YT shows how to burn your outboard, simple mistake and worth a look, vid to look for is "Outboard engine fire tiny speedboat trip 8" ignition is 27 mins in.
"F' series Yamahas are hard to kill. (hard, not impossible)
They are pretty hardy outboard.
In freshwater they're pretty hard to kill, that's for sure. As someone who's only ever ran in freshwater I can't believe the gunk and corrosion from salt water not being cleaned out!!
I would like to know if that 115 Yamaha is savagable... I'm presently looking at purchasing one the same with similar issues,
Is all fixable, it’s just a matter of at what cost.
@@DangarMarine The one I'm looking at was submerged, boat capsized they recovered it the next day and flushed it all out with fresh water and changed fluids multiple times and got it running. But then it sat for a couple years with no use and they went to start it... and she was stuck. So it's filled full of oil and penetrating oil right now. I'm just more worried about electronics then getting it freed up, only has about 250hrs and can get it for a good price. I'm gonna bring a breaker bar with me to see if I can get it to budge at least a little bit, and also a bore scope to check cylinder condition. Just not sure what I'm getting into with the electronics
Good on ya for mentioning Doug, he only mentioned brupeg and life on the hulls in his last vid? maybe he is against Detroit diesel??omg
I just want to know how he found the 10mm ???
They should start making these fresh water cooled and run coolant in them with a heat exchanger.
Hi Dangar I was wondering if you need apprentice because iam at the point where I need I apprenticeship and I have a passion for working on boats if you had a spot going let me known I will apply for it
Hey stu I have a question if you have time it would be much appreciated. I just got a new to me 1999 yamaha 90 2stroke(90TLRX) and now that I've fully rigged it up on the test stand I went to trim the motor up fully and it started a constant beeping sound until I lowered it again. Was it supposed to do that? And if so what does the annoying beep mean?
Is it the oil reservoir alarm for an auto mix system? Makes sense that when you tilt the oil level shifts.
@@DangarMarine yes it does have an oil injection system. The tank is about half way filled so that makes sense thx stu
Heated up citric acid bath would clean all that right up
So what was the failure?? Not a old outboard at all.
Two strokes ftw..... 😉
Are your feet warmed up yet?
Hydraulic lifters? Or shim under bucket solid train?
Ah, could just be skim cover, didn’t take one out.
Is 32 mph the best I can get from my Yamaha 70 4stroke on my 18 foot Carolina Skiff
That sounds very good actually.
Yamaha engines don’t run too good on Castro’s cuppa chino, missed a couple of vids recently, youngest lad had a head on auto wreck so got a bit hectic.
So you did this video before your journey right?
Yes.
Wouldn't run through Patreon. Good here though
I would rather do that in a workshop, Just saying, I take my hat off to you for doing that
I think just about everyone would be unfortunately there isn’t a boat ramp or private cars on the island so you’ve just got to get into it.
🤠👍🏼
Hey! I have seen many F80-F115's die. The f80-F100's are the worst. The reason why they die is 99% corrosion. Why does this happen? Well, usually because the block anodes are not cleaned/replaced/checked annually. The fact that the thermostat was stuck in place tells me this engine was not serviced correctly. The thermostat is made of copper, and bad things happen when it gets contact with the aluminium-magnesium block through the solid salt deposits left from years of use.
and, at least here in norway, running any outboard hard in cold salt water will corrode your engine block much faster
Yes, I’ve heard that corrosion is an issue with these engines and this one certainly has had a hard life living in salt water 24/7 doing multiple 5 minute trips every day.
"Not really a complete job", sounds like you've been visiting my house..
It’s all a work in progress. ;)
