  • It is now possible to downgrade the firmware in your WF-3720. You can now use Initial or compatible cartridges even if your printer has a firmware that blocks them.

I never write reviews or comments, but this video worked perfectly, and was so easy to follow with each step matching what I was seeing on the printer or computer screen. Being able to purchase off-label printer ink saves me tremendously and I thought that option was taken away with Epson's last update. You've brought back my options as a consumer! Thank you so much for taking the time to record this video. Lifesaver!

A tip: remove your ink cartridges before doing this. After I performed the downgrade with the inks still in the printer, I kept getting the same error prompts. But when I removed the inks, run the downgrade steps as shown in the video, then reinstall the inks, it worked like a charm. Thanks for reviving my printer All In One Devices!

One note for anyone using this video: when Manny says at 5:52 that, after the first time running the software, " your screen may say something different," that includes the message that says non-Epson cartridges are not recognized. Don't be fooled (as I initially was) into thinking it didn't work. Continue to follow the instructions, and you will get to the promised land - a printer that once again can use anyone's ink! Thank you, Manny!

Excellent video. The process worked exactly as described with Windows 10 & USB connection. The only thing I had to do differently was that to get into program update mode I had to press in a slightly different place - halfway between the upper right corner of the screen and the upper right corner of the display box. Thank you very much!

Thanks so much for your video. I got it to work, somehow! I am not very computer savvy and it seemed like I missed a couple of steps, but it took my after market ink cartridge. I hate the way Epson does these updates to prevent us from using less expensive ink. We wouldn't be doing that if their ink wasn't so expensive. Good hints from other folks who commented.

I downloaded the firmware update in the middle of printing material for grad school, and it bricked my printer. said all my color cartridges were empty, and when they are really empty it won't print anything. Note that I had to remove the printer from my computer and replace the replacement cartridges with the empty ones that came with the printer (lucky I still had them). Also, if you have it set up as a wifi printer previously, make sure the "Network" printer (not USB) is UNCHECKED when you re-install the firmware.

I just want to tell you that this saved me so much money. Because I had already had 2 generic sets of cartridges, I could not print. Because we had to print, I went bought a set of 1 702XL black and the basic 702 cartridges and it was $85 and that is when I came home and found this video. Today (last day of 2020) I upgraded the firmware in my WF-3720 and got the dreaded "incompatible ink cartridges" message. After viewing this video and reading the comments, I replaced my half-used aftermarket cartridges with my original EPSON empties, unplugged it from my wired network, plugged a USB cable into the back of the printer, then followed this procedure to downgrade the firmware. When the printer got to the Program Update screen, it said "CLOC". After the second pass through the firmware update process completed, the printer complained about the empty cartridges but I was able to ignore that message and get to the regular operating mode. I re-installed the half-empty aftermarket cartridges. Everything is back to normal and I can finish using my aftermarket cartridges and continue to buy more.
Thanks for this video, the procedure still works at the end of 2020!

    To Cancel Firmware Updates:
Right click on the printer icon in the system tray then Update Software Settings. Click to open that and change Check for Software Updates on The Internet from Check Every 2 Weeks to Never.Click OK
The window that tells you to do an automatic update will no longer open so you won’t accidentally mess the printer up again. :-)

I, like Erik Jenkins, had to run this update with Wi-Fi. The printer was displaying the 'New firmware Available' screen. When I closed it, it returned to the screen with the 'Cartridge Error' displayed. I felt maybe the error was stuck in the system, so I pulled all the cartridges and pressed button that said ink change complete. Printer realized their were no ink cartridges in it and went to install position. I reloaded the ink (which was 1 Epson Black and 3 Generics) the printer went into maintenance mode and recognized all the ink cartridges. Thank You for the Information. It was a lifesaver and thanks to Erik Jenkins for his comment about running the update with Wi-Fi while printer was in normal, not update mode. That was valuable information.

I have the Epson Workforce Pro WF-3733 which is essentially exactly the same as WF-3730 (WF-3733 is only sold at Walmart). After a firmware update, I could no longer print using my off-label ink cartridge and was getting the same error message as everyone else on this page: "Cannot recognize ink cartridge." After some googling, I found this CZcams video and decided to check it out.
Today is Oct. 19, 2020 and I went through all the steps in the video about an hour ago. It took me roughly an hour to slowly implement all the steps in the video. A few time, the steps resulted in a variation of what this video shows (the video shows the steps on WF-3720) but I just followed the instructions, downloaded the file indicated, saved and executed it which installed the file on my HP laptop windows-10 (64 bit).
Everything worked out exactly as shown in the video and when all was done, my printer was able to print again using the same off-label generic cartridge that I was using before and which stopped printing after the firmware upgrade. Then I changed my printer's setting to "Never update software", in order to prevent future similar issues (it's default setting was update software every 2 weeks).
This is the first time ever that I am commenting on a CZcams video but I am writing this review hoping that it could help someone else.

If you have updated the firmware it can not be downgraded, what I did was use a Inkchip witch over-rights the firmware and allows you to use any ink cartridges you wish the only draw back are ink levels are always full which is not a big deal.
I have included a link below it cost $30 bucks but with the savings on ink cartridges it more then pays for it, I am no way affiliated with this company whatsoever all I know is it worked for me.
      Hope this Helps good luck.

Manny you are the man. For all those trying to use this video, make sure of 2 things before finishing the steps. 1. Make sure you are plugged into the USB on the rear of the printer. (You will need a USB cable that has a peripheral device connector as opposed to the standard USB.) 2. Make sure when you first reboot the printer, you end up in the screen "Program Update with WHITE letters. If you end up with RED letters in the IPL Update screen, turn off printer and try again. You have to let go of the dark screen edge and power button simultaneously very shortly after the blue light comes on. (Comment below says let go as soon as you see blue light, I had to hold a little longer and try it a few times.)
    Thanks Manny!!

Thanks for the tips! I got to step 5, but the computer couldn't find the printer via the usb connection, only on the network (which fails when the printer is in update mode), even though I had a usb cable plugged into the computer on one end and the printer (on the front end) on the other.
I've ordered a new usb A -> usb B cable to plug into the port on the back of the printer. Will find out in a few days if this works for me too

LIFE SAVER!!!! A couple tips for people like myself that are barely tech savvy. Use the printer usb cable that attaches to the back of the printer by the power cord. When putting printer into update mode- press closer to the display area vs right on the top right (almost a thumb width in). Very easy even for me and I'm barely computer literate.

I just ran this over the network (WIFI not USB) as my PC did not see the printer by USB. The firmware update did not complete (according to the updater stopped at 83%), but it did finish on the printer and it works. I assume this is due to the printer rebooting after it completed. I also did not go into the update mode. I simply did this with the printer on and at my cartridge error screen :-) .
    Thank you very much!!!

I can confirm this can be done provided your printer is connected to wireless network nd you have the appropriate drivers installed on the pc you are downgrading. I had a laserjet mfd in my cart lol...almost down 400$ then this finished

Perfect solution. Fixed my wf-3720 problem as needed. Never buying Epsoin again now that I know they are the cause of this type of issue.
