Note: On some 440+ series and 640+ you can try an alternate combo: STOP + LEFT + DOWN + POWER. On 830 and other touch screen models you can try holding the TOP-RIGHT corner of touch screen and POWER button for 15-30 seconds until power light comes on.
A quick guide demonstrating how to downgrade your printer's firmware to fix "ink cartridge is not recognized" errors caused by printer companies attempting to block third party ink.
This video is for the Epson XP series of printers (300-630) but the same general approach can be applied to most printers. You just have to find out how to enter recovery mode and then find a copy of the older firmware to transfer.
XP-630 and XP-640 Old Firmware Download:
Epson XP-630 2015 Firmware (NQ10F8): www.dropbox.com/s/m50pm1q1cwu...
Epson XP-640 2016 Firmware (NK10G8): www.dropbox.com/s/yr9vma6blpt...
NOTE: For XP-640 Epson has changed or removed the firmware upgrade method that worked on the XP-630. Instead try STOP + LEFT + DOWN + POWER to enter firmware update mode (white text).
You may also find WIC Utility of interest; the free version can query many printers to detect older firmware versions and list them for review, but to actually downgrade using this software instead of manually as described in this video costs $20 per reset.

Thanks so much for this video. I had accidentally downloaded the firmware, thinking it was a security patch and not looking when I hit "ok" for download. Totally bricked my Epson XP-630, to where I couldn't even use the copy or scan functions. Your instructions were great, easy to follow and in less than 10 minutes I was back up and running. Appreciate you looking out for those who don't like getting ripped off by companies forcing their products on us.
You saved my butt. Thank you. I do't plan to purchase another Epson printer ever again. What a horrible way to treat your customers.
Thank you, i have yet to try this on my Epson XP-330, but i am confident in your breakdown of the steps that i'm sure i can get it to work!
Soooo..so glad I found your video.
You explained everything so well even I was able to fix my Epson xp-330. ( Ink cartridges not recognized )
Which was held hostage by their "updates". Thank you so much.
A big THUMBS UP ! Subscribed and spreading the word.
How did you do that pls as the XP-330 does not have a USB port?
Thanks!!! Worked like a charm - I had just purchased ink in bulk - I greatly appreciate the time and effort that went into this video. Epson should be ashamed of the approach.
I found in Xtrime Printer Drivers you linked in your article the firmware I need for my Epson Xp 530 and it solved the problem. A million thanks Matt!!
I can not thank you enough!!!! it worked in my XP630. I was about to give up when I found your video, I tried it and it worked!!! :)
Thank you! Your instructions were so simple to follow and my printer is working again. Can't say "Thanks" enough!
Matt - Thanks so much, Epson XP 640 model, works exactly the way you describe, your the best! The level of detail in this video and on your web page is amazing, thanks again!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! When the firmware update disabled my 3rd party ink cartridges, I was livid. I felt like I had been violated. Like someone had broken into my home and stolen my personal property. Which, if you think about it, is EXACTLY what Epson did. They came into my home and dispossessed me of my ink cartridges. I appreciate your help more than you know. FYI: I have an Epson XP-640 and used the 2016 Firmware (NK10G8) listed in your description. After the installation, the copier did NOT automatically restart. After waiting a little over45 minutes (just to be cautious) I unplugged the copier and the firmware had indeed been rolled back. My 3rd party cartridges work again. Second FYI: the XP-640 has two USB connections. One in the front of the printer and one in the rear of the printer. The front USB port will not work to update the firmware. You will need a USB type A to type B cable and hook it up to the rear USB port to get the firmware to load onto the copier.
This video is great. I've got my Epson printer firmware downgraded. Epson used to be a great company but now it's running by some idiots. I'll never buy any Epson product again!
“I only got two photos out of brand new ink with my EPSON XP-446!! Trash, scum, users, thieves, and whatever other disgusting words I can conjure up for this company!!! It’s theft by deception!! ‘Illegal’. I did some research and discovered they have a class action lawsuit against them! Anyone else have the same problem?? I’m not paying $19 for a printed photo!!! That company is out of their crazy minds to think they were going to get away with this crap!!! 💩 “
Matt - THANK YOU so much and may God bless you big for helping so many people restore their printers! And for anyone reading comments that has an XP-830 - read ALL of the comments about the XP-830 because it is quite tricky, but if you hang in there this process works. I had to do the install 3 times AND adopt commenter LaVerne Boylan's trick for turning the printer off after the install (unplugging to restart doesn't work) but now I've got my printer back. Hooray!
Hallelujah!! Thanks, Matt! I thought I was going to lose my mind there for a second.
NEW SUB HERE!! You saved my LIFE! LOL! Thank you! My business was held up for hours and hours today because I updated the firmware last night and couldn't print using my 3rd party refillable cartridges! I went to your website WHICH I RECOMMEND EVERYONE DOES, because there I found a direct download to the firmware I needed. Thank you so much for sharing!
You're a gem, Matt! I just had to downgrade and your instructions worked perfectly. Thank you so much!
Epson are scum! I had no idea firmware updates would involve basically being a trap to lock out 3rd party ink carts. I'll never buy another Epson product again, hope my printer lasts for a few more years! This video was super helpful, thanks a lot!
All printer manufacturers of commercial printers do the same thing. Epson is not the only one!
@shiko ishii who is the cheapest please ?
@@TopknotQuilting They all do this even though it's against the law. I had a perfectly working HP 8620 which was disabled after a firmware upgrade which they said included an "advanced security feature" which pretty much just ransomware where they forced me to buy their overpriced cartridges. HP had lost a class action in California and they released firmware that removed the "advanced security feature" but this was a difficult process as the firmware number was lower that the update they installed so printer saw it as a downgrade which it wouldn't allow. Even after they lost their court case they still performed an illegal update on my printer in Australia as it is a different jurisdiction. After I performed a reset, it killed my cartridge carriage which became stuck in one position which I am unable to move. End result my printer was dead, and HP couldn't care less. They offered me a discount on a new HP and I said a firm No. I know this practice is illegal and I could take legal action but it simply isn't worth it. I'd rather warn people to avoid buying products from Companies who don't care about following the law. So DO NOT buy a HP unless you are prepared to continue paying nearly 10x the price of generic cartridges. At least that's how much more HP cartridges are in Australia
@@xray364 Why the hell would you buy HP products anyways? they're bad, stick with Epson and don't update their firmware.
Wait they aren't exactly scum. If you want cheap ink you can buy an ecotank printer. Did you really think that with the $199 or $99 printer, you were paying the full price for the printer? No, you are often paying half, or less, of the manufacturing costs. I would guess that the lowest-end all-in-one printer costs Epson $250 to make, like an EcoTank-2xxx series. They are just trying to get their money back.
Unfortunately, its a scummy way to get your money back, kind of like the cellphone companies that keep charging you huge fees once your phone is paid-off 2Y after you joined.
What Epson SHOULD do on these low-cost printers is to have an agreement that the customer will buy 2x sets (or 3x or 4x for the very heavily subsidized printers) of extra cartridges, then the printer would unlock and they are FREE to use 3rd party ink refills, like in an ecotank printer. Problem solved, everyone is honest, happy, and straight-up with each other, and millions of man hours of time fighting and hacking between Epson & Its customers is banished, forever.
Thank you Matt. I discovered i needed to release both fingers right away at the same time to get the white text. Now all I need is the downgrade firmwear file.
Such a useful site. You are appreciated.
My Epson printer works now.
I thought I was bugging out and was about to buy new ink cartridges, I’m glad I didn’t thanks to your video. Much appreciated
A BIG thumbs up, Matt, for saving my printer! Followed these directions and my printer works again after the nefarious firmware update by Epson. My XP-330 is good to go. Thanks for sharing this info! Epson should be ashamed of themselves for freezing our printers if we are using third-party (completely legal) ink.
My Epson XP-446 was locked asking for Epson ink. I contacted Epson and they responded by stating they could not locate my product registration and to send in the receipt, which I did and never heard from them again. But then I found this CZcams guide.
I installed the earlier edition of firmware (SO10H8 from 9/27/17) according to Matt's instructions and it worked! I can now print again. Thank you Matt!
I was very upset when this happened to me this morning on my xp-330. I have original Epson cartridges but I didn't want to trash my knockoffs so I tried your method & it worked perfectly. The hardest thing for me was finding a USB cable long enough to reach my computer without having to move the printer. Your step by step instructions worked perfectly. Thank you very much.
Where did you find the firmware?
Hi if you haven't found the firmware yet you can get the older version JO10G3 for the XP-330 below:
Windows: ftp.epson.com/drivers/epson17757.exe
Mac: ftp.epson.com/drivers/epson18234.dmg
I found it here: www.latestprinterdrivers.com/epson-xp-330-driver-download/ Just be sure you download the recovery mode version and not the original install.
Thank you for this video, it really helped! I liked & subscribed :) You're only 44 away from 1,000 subs now!! Good luck and keep up the good work!
Great instructions! It fixed the problem.
Note: to those who can't find the old firmware online, try to see if you have it saved on the downloads folder of your computer. That's how I installed mine!
Thank you very much for posting this, it helped me allot. Epson Xp-430
You're awesome to share this info! Thank you! Worked on my epson 640! Take care!
I can't find the firmware for the iMac... help please
Thank you. I bought two sets of cartridges. After update nothing works anymore. Even solutions give by selling it have nothing to give. Your video is the best solution to operate the printer and save money.
It just worked perfectly on my XP-640.. I was able to roll back to G8. Printer NOW recognizes my cartridges again!
Thanks!!
I need the firmware for the iMac . pleas
Thanks a bunch for the clear instructions. Worked for XP-430. I had to reinstall the cartridges twice for it to recognize.
Use the non-chip firmware and never have this problem again, my friend, you can use chipless cartridges: czcams.com/video/mni8D7efhAY/video.html
Guys...the Epson auto updater updated the firmware on my XP-640 this afternoon and the printer immediately stopped recognizing the 3rd party cartridges. I followed your instructions and it worked.
YOU SAVED MY BUTT!
Thank you.
Mike
Not knowing any better I downloaded Epson's latest software/firmware update. After I did that I could not print with the non Epson cartridges I had been using. I was about ready to throw my Epson XP-630 in the trash until I found your Video. It worked. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
Thank you, although my printer model is 1500w, I now see what epson are doing. I use CISS. Very concise video and to the point.
Worked for my XP-330,. Thank You!!! You have a new subscriber!
It worked! Thanks a million! I have and Epson XP 440. I downloaded the firmware from your website for the XP 400 because I couldn't find the 440 anywhere. First I downloaded it on my Mac- but I could't get it to run. So I downloaded it onto a laptop I use for work- Windows based; I launched it and it worked. I followed the instruction as above except to put the 460 in programmable mode you use the Cancel//down/left/power buttons. I ran the program, restarted the printer and put in the inks from LDinks- and wallah!!!!! I test printed a few pages and it's working perfectly. Screw you Epson! I will never download another firmware update from them again.
Thank you!!!! My XP-430 printer is back to normal now.
thank you. You have helped me restore my Epson xp850 printer. I can now use it again with the 35 generic cartridges I bought. Thank you again!
God bless you. Thanks a lot for your efforts and great pedagogical skills in this video. It's easy to follow for a beginner like me
Thanks for this, worked like a charm on my xp-640. Luckily I was able to get to your page using the google cache version to get the right fw. Liked and subbed. :)
Thank you so much. This worked for my Epson XP-460 with the Stop, down arrow, left arrow, & Off button at same time. I contacted Epson when I began getting the unrecognized cartridges and I even asked them if they had purposely changed that in their firmware update. All they would say is all they can warranty is Epson provided printer cartridges and that is why I was getting error message because I had purchased from another manufacturer. When I purchase new printer, it will not be Epson!
You are performing a great service to people. I have the XP-430 and your instructions and video walked me through the steps. As you mentioned, finding the drivers was a bit of a shore. I found mine on drivers compatible. The page had a lot of ads to watch out for, but I found the proper download, installed and am back up and running.
LO HICISTES FUNCIONAR SIN CHIP???????
What's the link where you found the driver?

Just be careful clicking around,
Lots of ads so you have to be careful but firmware was installed and I'm back up and printing again. Thanks for the link!
It actually worked on my Epson XP-830! The power and right corner trick worked BUT on mine but I held it too long and actually got into some orange lettering that I mistakenly used and it didn't work. Getting my 2 fingers off the screen earlier at the same time shortly after it came up brought up the WHITE LETTERS that you need to make this work. Thanks do much for this! I now use my generic cartridges that work fine for me. I don't need the 75 year warranty of the paper and ink from Epson for most of my printing needs.
Many customers are displeased about printer companies using software upgrades to turn their products into useless bricks. They are trying to keep their printers and ink hostages to extort money from customers.
THANK YOU! I have my printer back! Oh how I have missed it! THANK YOU MATT!
I was 5 minutes from chucking my Epson XP 8600 in the trash and buying another printer after the update turned my printer into a plastic brick. (Cheaper than the cost of a completely new set of Epson XL printer cartridges.) I stumbled upon this video. Found the firmware on Reddit. Your instructions were a mirror image of what I saw. You saved my printer and my wallet. Thank you so much!!
Good to know it is still useful information. I had meant to make an update video a year or two ago on this topic, but didn't get around to it. Often times the only difference now is that you may have to physically unplug the device during the initial transfer of the older firmware, in order to be able to enter proper recovery mode and downgrade to an older version.
TYSM!!! I stupidly updated the firmware thinking update=good. Thank you for this video, I can start printing again lol
As a techie i can’t resist updates. Lesson learned

Successfully downgraded my XP-830 when it wouldn't work with the 5 new 3rd party cartridges I bought online. Thanks for saving me a good bit of money!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU!....It cost me 6 bucks for a usb cord and with your app page and inst. did the trick so smooth on the xp 330...saved me from doing away with my after market ink because like a dummy i updated my printer. Thanks again..You are the man.
Awsome fix for my XP-434, look for the original firmware below. Thanks Matt. And I liked it too!
Hello from Russia!!!
xp-830 done . Thank you Matt!
i have the epson xp820, helpme.
best video on youtube. Thank you Matt Pilz.
I thought I was screwed. Thanks for the great guidance.
XP-340 used the Alternate Combo! STOP + LEFT + DOWN + POWER Thanks so much!!!!!
Hey i have the same model as you i tried so hard to get it to work but nothing works so far. can you help me with a link for the firmware to downgrade Please ?
could you please tell me where you got the firmware? - thanks
You are an ink and a life saver, thanks dude if only for the firmware link !
what was the firmware link? - Thanks
Thank you for the clear, concise directions.
Have XP-640 (Expression Premium). Updated firmware on 11 March 2020 (to give you an idea of firmware date). Did the recommended firmware procedure (which turned out to be Power/Left/Down/Stop). Firmware said 'Successful'. Well, not so fast. Still came up with the unrecognized alert :) Tried 5 times.. no luck. THEN, read down at the bottom of your post: An Alternate Method (Scrape Carbon Band Off Cartridge). WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!! So, don't give up - if the software doesn't work, hack away at that Carbon Band, and VOILA! Thank you for your site. I'm a subscriber :)
Works for me. Epson xp-830. Thank you !!!
You sir earned a like and a subscription! Thank you so much for the help!
This was enlightening, I had no idea Epson would do that. After printing for an hour today my printer said I needed an up date so I did the update and then I got messages to replace all my ink cartridges. So I did and I kept getting the same message. I had boughten ink replacemnet cartridges from another source other than Epson and now I can't print anything after upgrading. Thank you Epson, I really need to stop everything because my printer won't respond. My thanks to you Matt for helping out in time of need. I put money from paypal to your account. Jim
Thank you, Jim! Epson is currently facing two separate class action lawsuits over their ink tactics. If I find the time I hope to do a video summarizing those cases on here, as well as a 2019 update video with some more printer tips.
@@MattPilz Thanks for your peompt reply Matt. I did download the file I needed but it says it failed to execute it through my usb connection.
This works and I've got my cartridges back. These Epson bottom feeders will never get my money on a new printer. And thanks to the person that posted this video.
Awesome Awesome AWESOME!! Thanks for the fix. Worked perfectly.
Thanks brother. Just did it on the lady's printer she just got even though I told her not to buy an epson for this exact reason lol. I couldn't find the SO10H8 firmware but I did find it no problem on your website in the firmware search box. Worked like a charm first try on the xp-446. Thanks again.
Thank You very much I had this problem after a recent update. With your simple instructions all is well! XP 440 Recovery mode Combination ... Left, Down, Stop, Power! Million Thanks Again!!
Hey Mark. I also have an XP 440. Also just recently got very angry. I can't seem to find our model in Xtrime list. Which driver did you use? Oh, and thanks so VERY VERY much for posting the combination!
FOUND IT! www.printerwirelessdrivers.com/2019/03/epson-xp-440-printer-setup-driver.html
@@jessicaepstein4281 Here you go Jessica, just look a little lower down at the firmware download for the XP440 click NEXT it's the "SO10H8" firmware your looking for.. Then just follow the instructions on this video. Remember The Code combination is, Left, Down, Stop, Power. Hope everything goes smoothly for you as it did me!
Awesome, posted your video in few of the scammers websites so people can do it for free instead of paying those websites.
La procédure est très claire et ça fonctionne bien avec une Epson XP440, merci!
Sweet baby Moses, thank you. Worked like a charm for my 440.
Amelia Lux Rothschild, hi there. I have a 440 also, which software version did you use?
You are the bomb! Thanks so much for the help, seems to have worked on my XP440
susan Coleman hi, what downgrade software version did you use?
WORKED! You are my hero! Hooray for a set of 5 cartridges (2XBlack) at $40
worked perfectly and now back using my compatibles thank you very much
IT WORKED.....!!! IT WORKED..... !!! "YEAH" !!! It seemed difficult, but once we got started, it wasn't as hard as it sounded so it worked perfectly...... I was ready to dump our Epson..... Now I won't have to ;-).... All I have to do now is Stop the firmware updat notification.... Thank You Matt for all your help.... Our Printer model is XP-630 In case anybody wants to know. :-)
Changed the key combo. Right + stop + home + power is a red screen. The recovery mode on the xp640 is left + down + stop + power. It should be a white screen. Recovery mode. Works perfect. Thanks for the video.
Edit: My dumbest sat here and fiddled with the wrong combo and thought I nuked my shut. Hope I helped! :)
It perfectly solved my problem! Thank you so much!
Hunter Zhang did you do the firmware update in october? thats when it started for me
@@hectorjarquin8082 Yes, exactly when left comments here.
Had the same issue with my wife's XP-430 after downloading the March 2018 firmware update. Followed Matt's video and instructions, and got my wife's printer working again :-) I used the 6/07/16 firmware update (Epson 17765) from the www.latestprinterdrivers.com site, and after installing this older firmware, it recognized my aftermarket printer cartridges. Thanks Matt, and shame on Epson for making folks have to go through this.
Great video, you helped me get my printer back working after a bullshit firmware update made my refilled printer ink unusable.
i tipped you $5 for good information. 10/17.2019
For anyone that is having issue downgrading.... the new firmware updates BREAK your ability to downgrade. I found the solution after fucking around for a few hours on the internet. The FIX is painful but effective. Purposely brick your printer in order to force it to use RECOVERY MODE.
Follow the procedure like in the video above, BUT unplug the printer while it is flashing (LED is flashing). Then, reboot it. Welcome to RECOVERY MODE. Repeat the downgrade procedure, it should now install your old (but not ink breaking firmware)!
I am not responsible for breaking your printer if this doesn't work for you... but I just did it and it worked for me.
@ice dov Did you read my comment? Read it. I made it very clear. If not, you dont deserve to have a working printer.
@ice dov Listen, I want to help you... but you arent smart enough to read clearly. Just do what the video wants you to do but while the printer is showing you "upgrade in progress" disconnect the power cable. Yes, I know that the printer will not upgrade because the new firmware will not let you, but this will fuck it up. Just like on your computer, it says dont turn off the power during upgrades, you need to do this on purpose...
I cant make it more clear... If not, take your printer to Geek Squad and then show them this comment chain. They should be computer literate enough to understand.
Worked like a dream - posted comment thanking you in lates too :). Thanks! All cartridges working again!
Not sure what planet ice dov is on !?
@@drew8958 Just an idiot. What can I say? Anyways, glad to see that I was able to help someone. :) Made my day.
This is still in 2023 a viable method of reverting to an old firmware. I have a WF-3730 and recently it had a firmware update and rendered my 3rd party black useless. I tried flashing back to older firmwares but it wouldn't work properly. So I intentionally corrupted the printer firmware sending it into recovery mode and reloaded the old firmware once again. Worked like a champ. Just flash the firmware as this videos and many other have reported once the write process starts on the printer pull the plug. Plug it back in and restart, it should go directly to a black recovery screen...once you get that you know you have it. Then just reflash and let it complete the process. Thanks to 一三Gnefitisis
Great video and instructions. Unfortunately, my Epson XP-640 is still bricked. I can't even run the scanner. Epson, you get my 'A-Hole of the Day' award. Probably get it tomorrow as well.
Thanks Matt and thanks to Ruby and Jonah for firmware link.
Thanks for the good recomendations and software!!!
Your video is great. Thanks for the help!
Matt,
Thank you!!!!! Your instructions were perfect and my XP-430 printer is now up and running after the bogus Epson update I unknowingly applied on 4/12/18 in response to what looked like a routine prompt from Epson software updater. I had applied these updates in the past and it had always left my aftermarket cartridges alone. Not this time.
For everyone else out there, simply follow Matt's excellent guide and you will have the last laugh here - no need to buy another printer, Epson ink, or fight with Epson tech support. Don't get mad - get even!
When you do the update via the USB cable, the Epson updater asks about how often to check for Epson updates via the cloud. How about never?
I actually like the XP-430 as a cheap, workhorse home printer. Form factor is pretty compact, print quality is good, photo quality isn't great but that's not what I use this printer for. When it dies, I will never, ever buy another Epson product however.
Again, thanks Matt and everyone subscribe to get him up to 1,000 subscribers.
Regards,
Paul

you are my holy hero. great video bro !
No more downgrades anywhere. Just did the update that stopped my xp 446 from working. Could've at least sent a warning EPSON. I just purchased these cartridges June 2019 and worked up until today November 4th 2019.
Here is XP-440 firmware that many have had success working with 446. Yes, Epson has been deleted all old firmware from their servers...

Thank you. My printer works now.

XP-330 fixed just followed your directions. Thanks for the help maybe we can keep the printer robbers at bay! All it cost was cost of usb b to a cable.
Funny (not Ha-Ha funny though) how sometimes this downgrade works for some and not others. My color inks were proper Epson's, so naturally those were recognized. I had both a large and a regular size (non-Epson) black cartridge that weren't recognized. I tried several attempts at downgrading my XP-640, but the latest firmware update might have made Matt's procedure no longer usable. I thought I was to the point of buying another printer (which would have been cheaper than buying a new ink set, as we all know). But, after reading Andria's post about 'Scrape Carbon Band off Cartridge', I tried it, and it worked :) I took a steak knife (serrated like a saw), and gave the little 'band' a few (gentle) saw hits. When I could see (under a magnifying glass) that the little carbon bit was gone, I crossed my fingers and put all the cartridges back in. Sure enough, ALL cartridges are now up and printing as before. Thank you Matt for including Greg's 'Scrape' fix onto your original post.
Thank you for posting this, you saved my printer from a trip to the landfill. This type of procedure should not be necessary in the first place, guess I won't be buying any more Epson products. The funny thing is this kind of BS is why Richard Stallman started the GNU project in the first place. I guess we have printer manufacturers to thank for the FOSS movement. :D
Epson does some DIRTY BAD Business. =-( My wife did the update by accident and this still worked!!! Thanks so much.
hey matt, great video but i have a question. my printer isnt showing when i get to the screen to select the printer from the model list. it is connected by usb cable & on the program update mode on the printer. what should my next step be?
dude you just literally saved my printer. Now i don't have to go to the library and pay 10 cents per printed page.
This worked well on XP 830.
You are my hero!!!!! UGH the moment I saw that error, I almost threw it in the garbage! Nope! Just hardwire and downgrade it!! Genius! If their ink wasnt so astronomical, then third parties would have no business!
Shame on epson, i had to buy 15$ cord just to do this lol
