  • Tried another voice over DIY and failed us on the footage side but I still feel delivers enough information to help a few people out, so here it is!
    2016 Ford Explorer 3.5 V6 Water Pump
    NOTE: This is a timing chain driven pump, it is usually recommended that the chains and guides be replaced at the same time but this customer declined that service.
    Thanks for watching, forgot to do the little outro screen, so if you’re reading this just go ahead and like and subscribe and do all the other CZcams things. It might help someday!
    Thank you, I really do appreciate it.

    Great video, when you pulled the pump off initially, how did you keep coolant from gushing down into the oil pan?

    • @RiggsCo
      @RiggsCo  Před rokem +7

      I usually take a piece of cardboard and shape it into like a half funnel up under the pump and over the edge of the oil pan, that’ll catch most of it but sometimes a small amount will still make it down. Change the oil either way 👍

    Can you please explain how to get the timing marks at top dead center?
    I have everything done up to that point. Also, would you trust a new water pump from TRQ?

    • @RiggsCo
      @RiggsCo  Před rokem +2

      Put that crank bolt you thought I forgot back in and rotate the engine clockwise to top dead center cylinder 1 and the timing marks on the chain should line up with the dots/lines on the crank and cam pulleys. If you can’t get them to line up your timing chain may have stretched or the tensioner or guide(s) failed and you jumped timing, inspect components accordingly. 👌
      Pretty much everything is made in China or Mexico these days, it is what it is, as long as the part has a warranty and they honor it I’d trust anything.

    • @RiggsCo
      @RiggsCo  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Doesn’t matter if you drain it before or after just be sure to change it as you’ll likely have some coolant make it’s way into the pan during the repair 👍

  • @to_theroof
    @to_theroof Před 24 dny

    What do you charge for this job? How many hours to just R&R timing cover? I just got done changing turbos, dropped oil pan for clearance, when i put back in timing cover 10mm on bottom, i blindly ran pan bolt into random 10mm threaded hole at bottom of timing cover and i put a small ugga dugga on it, turns out it wasnt a pan bolt it just dead heads into the side of the pan, when i snugged her, it broke a big on chunk out of the timing cover. I’m tired of this car and want some one else to fix it. What is your time on just a timing cover swap?

    • @RiggsCo
      @RiggsCo  Před 24 dny

      Few hours with a lot of smoke breaks 😂 but seriously though I’ve done the turbos on our 15 sport and that was way more time consuming than the timing cover. If you’ve done all that work already the cover should be a breezy job for ya.

      I’m a big “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” guy so I can’t give a mileage based recommendation for the pump (cause it’s either gonna leak or not) as for the chain though I’d recommend around every 80-90k

      Up to you if you think it’s something you can tackle yourself. I’d avoid the dealer as you’d be paying a premium for a pretty straight forward job. If you want a shop to do it I’d shop around at some local independent shops. As for price it’s going to vary depending on if you have the chain done at the same time.

      Hey i think i might have just ruined this job. As i put the vise grip on the left cam i believe i felt the cam move and i also heard a slight tick. But the tick could have been from the vise grip locking. Not sure. The problem is the chain now seems to have gotten a little lose. It has a bit of slack/play. But Not enough for it to come off. The timing mark on the chain is still in line with the mark on the cam. Any idea what happened? Why did the chain get a little lose? Was it like that before and i just didnt notice? @Stratcat1967 Před 8 měsíci

      That’s definitely what we’ll do. The first mechanic (Goodyear) that we took it to said that the main reason they don’t touch them was because of required “turbocharger”replacement and only the deal could perform it. ???

    • @RiggsCo
      @RiggsCo  Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@Stratcat1967 do you have the twin turbo eco-boost 3.5? You might have a turbo failure (separate issue entirely) and they may have just added it to the list. Although I don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to do a turbo as well, as they’re relatively simple... My wife has a ‘15 Explorer Sport with the twin turbos and I’ve already replaced one LOL it was finicky but not too terribly difficult, and that was the backside turbo.

  • @logicalguy488
    @logicalguy488 Před rokem +4

    Ford Service Data suggests that to do this job 100% successful you must drop the engine. So many do it in the car but there is a high chance of oil leaks afterwards. Very bad design.

    • @RiggsCo
      @RiggsCo  Před rokem +15

      I’ve done about a dozen and never had a leak afterward. The timing cover is just silicone there is no gasket so clean up the surfaces well and apply a thin layer of RTV (I use ultra gray) and a couple bigger dabs on the corners were it meets the oil pan and allow it to set overnight before filling with oil/running. Never had a problem that way 👍 dropping the engine for this job would be a huge waste of labor.

    • @davem3789
      @davem3789 Před 10 měsíci +1

      I’ve done a total of one of these in the car per the Ford Alldata manual. 0 leaks in about 12k miles so far. Yes, it would be easier to install the timing cover with the engine out but it’s not so hard to make it worth that time an effort and chances something gets messed up during that process.
