FYI: I have done this job many times, One thing I would recommend is to use ULTRA-BLACK gasket maker for the cover.. Made by Permatex.... Put in on the cover, then just finger tighten the bolts. Wait an hour then torque the bolts... If you torque the bolts immediately with ULTAR BLACK or plain RTV, just about all of it will squish out the side...could be inside or outside the cover...this will compromise the ability to properly seal oil..
Or you just use the TA-357 that Ford recommends and put it on the cover in the correct spot and never worry about a leak from the cover.
@@harrybalsonya5619 Seriously ?? Permatex actually exceed the TA-357 spec... FORD will always recommend using FORDS products $$$$$$... If FORD would recommend you also use their MOTORCRAFT Toilet paper, would you ???
@@cerrem1 loctite makes the ta-357 for motorcraft, simply remove the label and see. I have seen many types of sealants used on the covers, some don’t seal well and some make it all but impossible to remove the cover resulting in a broken cover but most of all because some sealants will cause oil foaming. As far as your application technique, the sealant is to be applied on the beveled edge of the cover NOT the machined surface. I would surmise that is why you get some much sealant squeezing out. I realize there’s many ways to do a job and a job this labor intensive I prefer to do it right the first time. The lesson is over, you may go now.
@@harrybalsonya5619 I use very sparingly and do not get squeeze out.. My engines do not leak oil...
Will changing the oil more often, help at all?
I am a retired US Marine. Besides being part of the worlds most elite fighting force in the world, I was also an automotive mechanic who usually worked on big heavy duty military trucks and tracked vehicles. I love to see it when young women and men, like you, get into the workforce as mechanics. In my younger days, I learned how to work on vehicles, build or upgrade homes, plumbing, electrical repairs, and so on. I am constantly amazed by the new generation of women and men who can’t either find an oil dipstick or replace a flat tire! The new generation of young people are very savvy when it comes to computer use and video games though. So sad, that it is really hard to find good quality mechanics anymore or people who want to learn that trade.
How long were you a Marine?
@@ronliebermann 23 years, got out as a E8/MSGT
Thank you for your service! Couldn’t agree with you more.
Agree. Kids now aday🙄. I was working on a dirt floor when I was a kid fixing my cars. And when I was little I could never hold the flashlight right for my dad. I knew if I couldn’t see he couldn’t. Lol. Not sure how many times I blinded him.
Thank you sir for your Service
Doing one of these on a edge at the moment, with the luxury of working at a shop and having access to lifts, I find it easier to just drop the motor out. Having the engine on a stand makes the rest of the job a lot easier
Good advice. :)
Was ford tech before all this came out. Performed this on my car. Wasn't to bad. Not easy job for a rookie or someone with no tools.
For some reason Ford had an external water pump on their rear wheel drive vehicles using the 3.5 and 3.7 v6’s and an internal water pump on the front wheel drives. I own a 2013 Edge with 140,000 miles with no problems but I change my oil every 5,000. Miles with full synthetic and flush the radiator every 30,000 miles or 3 years, which ever comes first. It is a great car so far, I plan on keeping this car for over 200,000 miles. If the water pump fails, hopefully I catch it in time and I will repair it.
My fun with Explorer's!
2013 Explorer Police - Water pump went. Ford dropped the entire front cradle to the floor and did it there. "while we're in there" also did the timing chain and guides. Traded in on my 2014, below.
2014 Explorer Sport - Timing job! "while we're in there", did the water pump and spark plugs. Ford again. Did all this without dropping the engine.
Fun fun fun!
The warranty saved me 4K... I normally do all of my car work but this was over my head
Just diagnosed this on a friend's 2015 Taurus 3.5L SEL last night. Initially looked like just a failed radiator (coolant was present at bottom and rear of radiator core). Filled w/distilled H2O and pressure tested system: sure enough, her WP took a dive at 99k miles like an out of work boxer stuck under the thumb of the mob.
The Toyota 3.5L is not a fun WP to do at all, but those are external and will not dump coolant into the oil when they fail.
This Ford 3.5L WP design has to be one of the most thoughtless engineering moves in a long time... 🤡 🙈 👏
Than you, Flying Wrenches for putting this little vid together. 🍺
About to replace the water pump on a 2013 Flex 3.5 Ecoboost. This is good insight! Thank you
Thanks for sharing this video, I started doing my first one at the dealership today
There is a second weep hole on that water pump that leaks under the intake. Just did this job on a 2007 Lincoln mkz with the 3.5, and it was leaking coolant through the weep hole in the valley down through the bellhousing.
Excellent video, very informative. Next time I buy a Ford it will be an F-150 or an Expedition with the external water pump!
My 2016 started to leak at 80,000 miles it's in the shop now. Luckily I bought the extended warranty specifically for this repair.
Reminds me of the Dodge Intrepid with the 3.2? engine. When the pump goes junk it makes some yummy cappuccino in the oil pan. Huge job! Don't do them anymore. God bless you! Great video. Keep up the good work 👍🙏😎🇺🇸❤️
Thank you!
I’m so glad I saw this, I have the 3.7L in a 2015 Lincoln mks, it has 250k miles on it, noticing a little drop in coolant, nothing huge, but I bet this is the reason, I love the power of the engine so much I would hate to loose this car over a water pump
Ole….I’m here for the ole. I love it!! Great video too!
Pretty spot on man. I’ve had my replaced twice cause they didn’t get moto craft at first pump so the warranty had me on the second time. But then the rear main seal kept leaking so they had to replace that again.. theses motors are a pain
Thank u for your excellent vids!! I watch them all
Thank you! Happy to hear you enjoy them.
2013 Taurus SEL, 120.54K on it and yeah, leaking coolant exactly where shown in the video.
I'm good with twisting a wrench, but I just don't think I want to tackle this repair. I did the troubleshooting, checked the fans worked with the AC on, that they came on after idling until the temp hit 210F and the fans came on without the AC on, then at 206F the fans shutoff. Checked the thermostat, it works, kicks open around 175 - 180 degrees. I use a bluetooth ELM plugged into the OBDII and an app called Torque lite on the android phone. Nice little app, can clear the logs and add the gauges you want to use. I know this repair, it'll cost $$$$ but was told by Ford dealer service person it will have a 2 year warranty on the work done.
Man o man, they want $199.95 to diagnose, I said $200 and he repeated it is $199.95 and we can't warranty the job if we just use you're diagnosis. WTF!
I've got videos of the leak , exactly where the weephole is, there is no way it is anything else. I knew this would happen some day. All those aftermarket warranty commercials remind you of it.
Great vid thanks for all the info
Great information im dealing with this exact issue on my 2012 xplorer w 190k+ miles.
Best explanation on CZcams.👍🏼
From Buffalo, NY. Hey Pal, I picked up a used 2010 Escape for $4K with 110 k miles. I sure hope I don't have to be having a waterpump. It's NOT leaking but still the idea of thinking of it YUK. why would Ford do such a thing? I try to keep up with mantience. Changed fluid on PTU, rear pumpkin, spark plugs yuk, front stabilizer links and always change the oil regularly. // You did a Great job explaining about the waterpump and I wish you well.
Very impressed with your videos. Very professionally executed, very concise and informative. Excellent job brother. You have a servants heart.
130k and my 2017 Explorer started leaking coolant. From the water pump. Gonna cost around $2,300 at the dealership. Gonna add on a few extras since we are digging in there already. Seems like everything you’re saying checks out. Thx for the information!
That’s what I paid.
Great vid buddy
Excellent video.
Great video , Saved, Thanks
Good video! Thanks
Thanks man about to do this job on my wife’s car. I’m a kenworth mechanic so not as familiar with cars as semis
Lol my Explorer 2016 has that issue now with 70,000 Miles 😒 to young for that but it is what it is...I need to deal with that now ... thanks Ford to do my Life simple....
Great vid!
This is my project for a cpl days now. What happened to the old days when stuff was easy. Unfortunately there is coolant in the oil also. So it’s gonna be a kinda pull and pray repair.
Great video like always 👌
Thank you!
Great video. 🙂 👍
About to buy a 2019 Interceptor Utility, and I knew this was a problem if not caught in time. I usually change the water pump, seprentine belt, and timing chain around 100k anyways. Thank you for the info
Got a 2013 interceptor sedan, going to be replacing that pump as I'm over 100k now. Could gamble that it will last longer, but odds are it will need to be replaced before the car dies anyways.
Fastest I did one is on a Taurus 3.7l in a police car. 4 hours total. I only did a water pump, and oil/filter/coolant. $100 in parts with a Motorcraft water pump off Rock auto.
How much did you charge
Hello from a yankee. I like your videos. Thank you.
Thank you!
I love your explaination😀💯💯💯💯💫💫💫👍👍👍
I’ve done diagnosis on my 18 Ford Taurus, and I was showned a list of all parts for the operation. Maybe I should buy parts myself and take it to close buddy of mine to fix it for less. Should I buy all parts or certain pieces for my new water pump?
Just sold a 2010 ford edge 3.5...original water pump at 198k miles. One of the best vehicles I've owned, very few issues
They are NOT fun to work on. Engine is pretty tight in there. The Explorer platform gives MUCH more room for service.
Explorer would last if you changed the oil with synethic and actually changed your coolant. They usually fail because the coolant becomes acidic after awhile as well as the oil. And it wears the shaft bearing down or the seal wears. If you just don't maintence you'll get alot more life from them for sure.
@@hairpunutjust synthetic or fully synthetic oil?
I had 250k on the original pump on my Taurus
I've had 4 of these (2 SHO & 2 Explorer Sport) and at 130K(ish) they ALL lost the water pump. I replaced absolutely everything while I was in there, because I have the luck of a no leaf clover on things like that and would be back in there again by the next oil change replacing a tensioner or whatever. Besides the cost of a chain, guides, tensioner, phasers, whatever is pennies on the dollar compared to going back in a second time.
That is why i like the 3.7 even making little more hp
The 3.7 police interceptor engine also has the internal water pump...
Your like 👍 and a new subscriber thank you
nice work! my 2012 taurus does not have those oil tubes at the top/front by the cam. it looks like it has additional tensioners up there right under the valve cover. ughh... plus an extra belt from the power steering pump to the crank pulley. not a turbo- just my luck- i got the different/ weird one.

I have ford 2007 edge does the ac need to evacuate so you have more room to get timming cover back on . The ac hose interferes and seems to cause issues when you applied gasket maker without rubbing it off during install.
I have a 2011 Ford Fusion Sport with the 3.5 Duratec. I can't seem to figure out which water pump to buy. Ford lists a single and dual sprocket pump. I'm guessing the dual sprocket is an updated design?
I have to replace the water pump and timing components on a 3.5 explorer at work soon. Should I do it in the vehicle, or drop the subframe and try to make it easier on myself? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I had the coolant flushed in my 2017 Explorer limited w/3.5L V6 about a month ago as recommended by the ford manual when reaching 100k miles. I was a little over 99k at the time. 99,600 miles and I got a notification that my coolant was overheating. Checked and it was extremely low in the reservoir. Took to shop and was told water pump is bad and the timing chain also needs to be replaced. Could flushing the coolant have caused this issue? I had no signs of losing coolant prior to the flush. Is it common to continue to have problems after replacing water pump in the 2017 Explorers?
Mine failed at 88K. First extended warranty I ever purchased and it was covered. Contrary to the "book time", my dealer replaced it in 6 hours of clock time. They charged me $95 to replace the chain and guides (my ask) while they were in there. 50K later and it's running well.
Yes, the car shouldn't have had the issue in the first place. I'm at least as troubled that the book time is 12-14 hours, when they did the job in 6 hours of clock time. I may have gotten the magic mechanic and I thank him or her for their talent, but come on Ford.
Book Time is usually calculated by using hand tools only. Any pneumatic or electric tools the technician uses only help to speed up the repair. You were lucky to get a technician with the knowledge to replace it in 6 hours.
@@rustyknucklesgarage6145 I agree with you, but I also suspect that due to the volume of this issue, Ford developed some special tools and techniques to improve efficiency of repair.
Do you have any tips for 1.6 ecoboost WP TIMONG CHAIN RELPLACEMENT????
Very informative. Thank you. I am preparing to do my 2010 Mazda CX-9. Do you have any recommendations where I can get a step by step manual on how to replace timing chain, water pump, cam phasers and how to make certain I am on TDC?
Look into getting your hands on the factory service manuals. Some people sell the hard copies on EBay
Question: what should I do if two of the four camshaft bolt/phasers are stuck on and stripped? I have tried everything to loosen them.
3 grand for entire timing set and labor 09 3.5 edge. It hurts. But running fab. 218,000. Ford pump, clyes complete
Im about ti do this job oil its milky and some noise by timing cover im assuming is water pump taurus 133k
Question I have 2013 Taurus water leak coming out between engine and tranny is there a freez out plugs in this area???
Great video and information. Been hearing much problems with the gas cap-less systems used by ford. Apparently causing fires and vapor leaks. I recently bought a 2018 Navigator. is there anything I can do to avoid similar issues?
Thank you! I haven’t seen any issues like this on any of fords vehicles.
Locking gas cap. They make them for capless gas tanks.
My 2015 Taurus NA started leaking and took out my AC clutch. Supposdy the new yellow coolant is easier on the seals.
I have the same issues, what was the problem ??
last summer had to get my 2017 PI Sedan 3.7 replaced at 200,000 Kms (120,000 mi). looks like he coolant had never been changed. They say if you change yur coolant every 60,000 mi you will not have acid coolant destroying the waterpump rubber gaskets causing the leak. Those who changed their coolant are getting 200,000 miles with original waterpump
Do you have what tools are needed to do the job
This is a great video! I have a 2011 Ford Explorer and I haven’t drove it in a week because I heard a noise over in the area where my tensioner belt is 😢 yesterday I went and cranked it up and noticed all of my coolant goes out of the reservoir and I thought it was strange I let it run for about ten minutes and when I shut the truck off my coolant started leaking from underneath the truck in the middle.
Did you get the water pump fixed ?
No not yet.
Coolant is in my oil
@@dequia611 that new water pump is going to cost you 💲
@tonyalston4838 I just got my water pump done! My 2011 Ford Explorer is running great and no more coolant in my oil, Thank you so much 😊
What kind of gasket maker do u use for front cover?
Does K-Seal help for a coolant water pump leak
I have a 2019 Ford Expedition with the 3.5L eco boost. Is the water pump internal or external?
Do you have to replace the water pump after it’s already been replaced at 110k??
Can anything be done to make it less likely the water pump will wear out?
What’s the likely hood the water pump won’t wear out.
Ford in Sandusky, Ohio has a Labor rate at $155.00 per hour. Quoted 18 hours of work to replace water pump (which also included replacing a small leaking oil hose for about $300.00) for a 2014 Ford Explorer Sport. The estimate without tax is $4,400.00 on a vehicle that bluebooks for $12,000.00. Good times.
Yeah, this guy's numbers are really low. This looks reasonably DIY friendly if you have another vehicle to drive while you take your time and do it right over the course of several days.
Thanks for this video! I own a 2015 Ford Police Interceptor Utility and it has the 3.7L V6 instead. Do you know if all this applies to that engine as well?
Yes, thr 3.7L is the same application. Both the 3.5L and 3.7.
So I drive a 2011 f150 5.0 and I’m a ford tech at a dealership and I was wondering what ur opinion is on the 5.0 piston slap. My trucks got 170 k on it almost 180 and most were highway miles. Is there a way to fix it without breaking the bank? I’ve been told by my dealerships master techs that it’s normal, some say to use 5/30 oil instead of 5/20 and some say use a bottle of Lucas with 5/20 every other oil change. What should I do? And next video idea maybe?
It's not uncommon for the crankshaft sprocket to jump a few teeth....
I have 2011 3.5 taurus it cranks and then stop not for sure if it's the timing chain .but I can turn it by hand and it turns over without drag do you have any suggestions
Link for the specialty tools for the timing?
The way southerners say oil! Reminds me of watching nascar
I say “earl” most of the yime
The motocraft water pump is made by Milling, so I guess I'll get the Milling water pump timing kit .
Done a countless number of these on the 3.5/3.7 Engines, it never made sense why this was the design or why I never "updated" the part to a better waterpump.
They have released the yellow coolant that is supposed to be easier on the seals. Not the best solution, but its something...
They could of just made it a idler as a revision where the pump is now
and then make a electric water pump put it somewhere else. This garbage cost me $1800 today hard to come by good thing this ford edge is paid off. This is the last ford we will ever buy
@@mich5a879just happened to my 2015 SHO 70,000 miles!!! I will never buy Ford again!!!!
According to Ford the most successful way of doing this job without getting oil ( awl ) leaks it to take out the engine. It's an absolute nightmare doing it in the car and there are a crap load of bolts in a few different sizes holding the massive cover and they all need to be torqued in a specific sequence. 70% chance of oil (awl) leaks if you do it in the car. And in my opinion you got rocks in your head if you don't change the chain and guides. Great job Ford engineers for building in this water pump nightmare. What a dumb idea.
Great vid i got a 15 ford explor whit only 70,000 mills an is leaking coolent an it looks to be aound where u say my be the water pomp is that normal at 70,000 mills to were out?
Not common at 70K but it does happen
had my water pump replaced and the engine lights keeps coming on after 4 visits to the mechanic. they can't seem to find out why. explorer 2017 3.5L. The last time they read where they drove the car and did reset on 8 functions. lasted 2 days before the light came on. need ideas. any help? cost 3200 the car has 115000. thanks
Hi..Iam interest to buy explorer 2013. 4 cylinder. What problems can face.?
I have a ford explorer 3.5l and a ford excursion 7.3l. I can’t believe it is harder to replace the water pump in my explorer than in my ex. I just replaced the water pump and ac compressor on the explorer. What a mess.
Mact ford edge on CZcams says he got 330k miles from his 3.5 duratec in his Ford Edge. Another problem with the Ford Edge is the PTU has no drain plug & it sits beside the exhaust which cooks it.
Where’s the link for the cam lock down tool?
Do you need to evacuate and disconnect any of the hvac system for this repair? Or can it be left alone?
Leave AC in place
Didn’t Ford stop using the timing chain driven oil pump in like 2016 or 2017 ??
My 2018 Explorer just developed this issue. A car I love I now wish I had never seen. What a stupid set up. Mine has been in shop 4 days now on this 2 day job. They tell me this is super common issue. I did have premium warranty and hope they do not find some way to beat me out of it. The guy bringing me home says it could cost $3,600. My car only had 22,000 miles on it and would not have found it save an after market shop oil change. Never saw a drop of coolant on the garage floor. Would not want one of these out of warranty. They told me it is so common. You have been warned! Oh, I had just one week before had the required 6 year coolant change.🦇
Is it true on the ford explorer 3.5 timing cover with the ford high temp silicone you got 4 min to torque bolt 7,8,15,17,18,21,22 if not you got to removed old silicon and start over
That is what the dealer repair says, ive done a few, im sure it took way more than 4 minutes and I've never had an issue. I'm not saying take your sweet time but that 4 minutes is almost impossible. It's easy when it's out on a stand, but in the vehicle it's not as easy
Anyway you can make a video on how to fix the explorer hvac blend door issues? I've replaced the same door 3 times in 4 years and as you know it's not an easy job. 2014 explorer.
I’ll see if I can do something on it. I’m usually limited to making videos on the issues I see constantly. That’s the only way I can get footage of them. If I run across one I can make a video on with this issue I’ll try to do something.
@@FlyingWrenches13 It's a very well known issue with Fords hvac systems so I'm surprised you dont see them much. The videos you make are great, I hope you run across a blend door issue eventually because it would be great to know a permanent fix.
@@whitelightnings1978 I’m primarily a driveline guy so I don’t see as much of the ac stuff anymore.
Hello I need help with my water pump on my Ford explorer nobody wants to fix it everybody’s telling me it’s a hassle can you help
Great video, now I can understand better the estimate of the dealer 😔$3,200
After the pump replaced why the weap hole still leaks ? And why there is a leak on the block on the other side of the timing chains by the intake manifold is a tiny hole that is there for a purpose ??
If you read the note from Ford on the replacmemt pump, it sais it will leak for a bit during break-in
I have 184k and it hasn’t leaked yet. I’m changing it next week.
Can someone tell me where can i get all the specs torques i need for this job since ford charge 2800 i wanna do it myself
A friend contacted me...his young daughter lived in another state more than 500 miles away. Had a 2013 Explorer and the water pump went out.....every place there she took it wanted to remove the engine and charge her thousand and thousands of dollars (she didn't have and being a young female I began to question the estimates she was getting)..... my friend had them get the vehicle more than 500 miles to my home and I did the job very easily without removing the engine....for much much less.....it really wasn't that hard of a job..... just labor intensive.
Now how do you avoid the water pump going bad ??
How much is the repair to do?
My 2013 Ford Taurus is having this repair done, so my question is how long should this new water pump last?
I've just booked mine in for the same thing. From what I've seen every 100k miles is fairly safe with many dying at the 130k mark. I've just 100k and figure it will need doing before the rest of the car goes, so might as well play it safe
We just had this done on our 2015 explorer 3.5 @ 80k miles is it normal to have oil leakage after the repair ?
From what i have read it is a common problem after the replacement. The front cover gets silicone applied to it and is a pain to put back on the front of engine. If old silicone isn't removed all the way and or new silicone gets messed up putting the front cover back on you will have a leak. The shop that performed the repair should cover that.
My 3.5 Ford Taurus just out no warning sign... On my way home overheated and died at 175,000 miles but found a used engine with 67,000 miles should I do the water pump before installing
Yes
Must the oil be drained when replacing the water pump? 2015 Ford Explorer.
yes
Not knowing they had done this I saw the leak and was like well crap ill fix it this weekend and replace the pump not that big a deal just a little messy.... well thats not the case anymore. Most of this stuff is nearly impossible for the end consumer to repair with out a full damn shop anymore and its ridiculous.
