    This set has everything I need - blue pieces, tread links and grabber, and also it has some new building ideas implemented - I would definitely buy this.

    i got to say, of all the people who review lego sets, in my own humble opinion, yours is the best.
    1) Honest opinion. (very useful to consumers like me)
    2) entertaining and not boring,
    3) informative.
    4) specially the hamster is fun to watch.
    though sometimes we tend to have different opinion interms of Lego Looks, but i still enjoy your review, gives me more insight on Lego official sets.
    keep it up, i hope to see more Old and new Lego Technic Sets.

    I purchased this set today and put it together this evening, and man what a rush of nostalgia it was using Lego again. I found your videos and really loved some of the stuff that you did with your creations, and it inspired me to pick it back up after 7 years hiatus. I rarely worked with Technic sets, nonetheless ones of this caliber, when I was younger, making this an interesting experience and a bit of a challenge.

    Just recently bought this set, 2 years after initial release. It's better that I expected (and I really liked it before I got it). I did not have any issues with lifting a 0,5 kg bottle. I use regular AA batteries, not the rechargable ones. Did not observe any clutch slipping. Make sure the roller wwheels on the grabber are free to move - they will create friction if under load and without ability to spin.
    The only disadvantage I can see is that the model is not able to turn itself using treads - this would be awesome.

  • @vtr0104
    @vtr0104 Před 8 lety +23

    You were right, that damned clutch gear on the winch almost ruins the whole point of the crane, as it barely lifts anything...
    I was considering changing the hull somehow to allow for a manual cog to be turned to overcome this, but realized that would be pointless after test-fitting the clutch onto a 42032 Compact Loader. Even with no load in the bucket, the clutch gear slips constantly and any hand turning short of delicate surgeon-hands renders the function useless (I guess hands just have some kind of unholy torque or something...).
    In the end, I kept the clutch gear only on the input shaft of the driving function and replaced the other one with the Z24 gear out of the Loader. Even with the standard gearing on the winch it seems able to lift most reasonably scaled loads (I tested it on a 31037 Creator jeep set and a 60027 City Camper, along with the Compact Loader that "donated" the replacement gear, the mini Rescue Helicopter from a couple of years ago and one of the older City sea-planes, which I ended up leaving in the grabber just because it seemed amusing).
    The heaviest thing I lifted with a clear conscience was the 42037 buggy, but the problem is the back of the crane weighs less than this, so unless you hold it down the winch doesn't actually lift the load, it just pulls the boom down on top of it and topples over. If held down though, it slowly lifts it off the ground with no grinding or fuss. I guess the only way to improve that is extend the back of the crane with more structure to make it heavier so it can remain stable under lifting.
    Only downside to swapping the clutch out seems to be that you have to be careful with the winch now, as instead of stopping when it reels all the way in, the motor keeps pulling on it and tries to pull the boom in until it grinds to a halt, possibly damaging it. Having a bit of responsibility is welcomed, though, if you're pretending to be a crane operator :).
    In any case, thank you again for your wonderful reviews and hard work in making the build videos, and have a very nice week-end!

      vtr0104 Just 2 likes on this comment? Come on, world! (Awesome point, I added a thing to easily help the boom rise on this model by hand on the left side, since there is a gear to put things like that on.)

    I really like the selectable gears on these models. They are a lot of fun to build and you learn a lot about gearing systems. The excavator with the grabber has a similar system with one motor driving 3 functions (2 boom, 1 grabber), but forward/reverse is controlled by the battery switch, not the gearing itself. That is part of what makes this set more interesting. Also really like the blue elements. I just finished the volvo front loader and missed building the intricate gearboxes.

  • @RedUtah
    @RedUtah Před 8 lety +2

    I added the metal hook from a 1980's power crane to mine and put longer technic thread on the main winch. i like how another battery box can be clicked on to add some extra counter weight.

    I know a way to separate the two turntable pieces: grab a brick remover, use the pryer-type thing on the end and put it between the two pieces, twist the brick remover, then use your finger to finish prying them apart, and then they are separated. (I figured out how to do that in robotics)

    For the steering, surely a simple solution would be to have a differential instead of those beveled gears that go straight to the drivewheels, and have some sort of manually operated tipping bar that could brake against the left and right driveshaft? It'd probably have to be controlled from the chassis rather than the superstructure though.

    What do you think can be modified with this set to carry all of the Hammonds you have? And even with a 1-meter boom?
    Also, suspension. Is it possible?
    You should do more outtake clips.

    Sariel I love you videos, always have, when trying to lift objects, if you raises the winch all the way up, then lowered the boom to grab the object, do you have more lifting strength? And when moving the boom, is the grapple offset by the movement of the boom, other then the obvious up and down motion. Like when extending the 42009 arm, the winch would move up. Thank you for all your hard work

    • @searme
      @searme  Před 9 lety

    Which would you recommend this or the mkII crane

    • @unnamed130
      @unnamed130 Před 9 lety

      Depends, what do you need? In terms of overall value I'd say go with mkII, if you want great pieces go with the crawler crane.

    • @searme
      @searme  Před 9 lety +4

      F1fan98 I agree that MkII can be a better choice, if only for being more versatile - it can serve as base for cars, trucks, and whatnot. With crawler crane, you can perhaps rebuild it into crawler-something.

      F1fan98 I dont own either, but I'd still have to say 42009 just because it seems like a more versatile model. Much more functions with it - playability that is :-)

    Legos clutch gear is crap because even if the motor has enough power, the clutch gear stops the motors power. I know it was made to protect the motor but if used responsibly, u dont need it i just replace it with a normal gear by standard
