    I think the motor upgrade is a necessary, under-appreciated upgrade. Sure the motor won't power the wheels and cabin lift system, but the primary feature of this model is using pneumatic cylinders to mimic hydraulic cylinders on the real machine. I was excited to see the 1992 model! The studded design will always be my favorite, because that is the roots of original Lego.

    Thanks for the review. Perhaps the Lego sticker designers learned from this review.
    In the more recent Lego set 42080, the pneumatic controls are clearly labeled. No more having to guess which way to move the lever. An improvement over the set reviewed here.
    This labeling issue has been bugging me for decades. Although I haven't gotten many sets in the last few years.

    In my instructions in step 381 on page 202, it shows part of the sub-assembly rotated 90 degrees out of position when it is attached to the model. The flat section is shown being attached to the model in the vertical position and then in the next step, it is rotated down into the horizontal position. In step 381, it shows the section of the sub-assembly with the sloped brick and 3x5 bent beam already rotated in it's final position as shown in the next step. In step 381, the blue pin is sticking up without the 3x5 90 degree bent beam attached to it. On page 229, you can see the way it should look like when in the vertical position.

    One thing though, the new viewing angle for the film is not good as I pefer seeing the close up filming of the model being built.
    And your assistant the lovely hamster is cute and makes a great tester for your new machines :) ( oh my word as a man I said your hamster is cute... ) lol
    And you are a lucky man to be able to buy all these pricey sets and have the spare time to build them as lego sure is very pricey now for what you get in the sets!

    Been a good technic year overall. This and the Xerion probably my two buys (money plz, where did you go?). Been ages since I had a "pneumatic" set, the last being 8464. No pre-cut luxury there.
    Regarding stickers, is it me or are there on average more per set? I can't tell if over-reliance on stickers is a good thing or not really.

    this has an amazing amount of parts and features in a fairly small model.
    it has two large phumatic pumps, one hand pump and a small phumatic pump, a battery box, a motor, lights, a work gear drive for to raise the cabin, HOG steering, front and rear out riggers, rotating superstructure, three phumatic switches, working front boom section, working rear boom section, working bucket claws, inspection bay. Thats insane.
    It is almost as complex as it is currently possible with technic really, and Technic is supposed to have mechanisms all over the placem thats what technic is. I wouldn't even care if it was pink and green.

    Although the bags aren't numbered, in my set, the bag with the pneumatic cylinders was marked as bag 11. Also, I had to order a replacement for one of the black thin 7 hole beams as one of them came bent in my set.

    • @annnguyen9512
      @annnguyen9512 Před 8 lety

      It took me 5 hours to build the set. Probably cause the bags were not numbered and I dumped them all on the same pile :)

    • @TinkeringJohn
      @TinkeringJohn Před 8 lety

      When I get a new set, I scan and print the parts list from the instruction book. I then number the bags with a sharpie and mark on the parts list I printed out, the bag number and how many of each part are in each bag. When I dismantle the set, I mark the bag numbers on zip-lock baggies and put the parts in the appropriate bag. That takes time too, but I am doing inventory at the same time to know if everything is there and how many extra pieces there are. It can be a chore to count the technic pins in a set that has hundreds of them.

    • @annnguyen9512
      @annnguyen9512 Před 8 lety

    I'm a sticker hater, ánd I don't like the tubing loose. As you mentioned, they used to build clean. That messy tubing is something I've seen in a lot of sets from the last 5 or so years. Flex tube is still produced, so I don't see any reason why they don't use it for pneumatics anymore.
    However, I think a compressor certainly adds something. You don't have to manually pump on the wobbly upper structure.
    That being said, perhaps I'll buy this in the future. It's the Technic model I'm the most enthousiast about in years, with the possible exception of the Claas.

    Sariel which one of the three technic sets you just reviewed would you recommend the most?

    I built the 1992 set when I was ten years old. I don't think it came with 250 pages of instructions or pre cut tubing. Are kids today not technical any more lol :)

    At 4:08, I believe the 12 Long Axle in Red already existed, no.

      2010/2011/2012 was better. 8109 Flatbed Tow Truck, 8110 Unimog, the 8052 Container truck, and all the 939x sets were very good.

    Hey sariel quick qeustion here : This model has pneumatics but the Volvo wheeloader had lots of powerfunctions.

      They're completely different in size, price and functions. Hard to compare.

      I have the wheelloader but its not a GREAT set.
      The powerfunctions dont give the vechicle enough power to do something. and the b model sucks.

    Hey Sariel, here's a not-so-hypothetical question for you:
    If you already owned the 42030 Volvo Front Loader and the 42043 Mercedes-Benz Arocs and were to pick between the 42042 Crawler Crane, 42054 CLAAS tractor, and 42053 Volvo EW 160E, which one would you choose?
    I've watched your reviews on all 3 but was wondering what your personal preference would be. :)

      42052 Heavy Lift Helicopter would also be a viable choice, I suppose. :)

      Personally, I'm in love with Claas but everyone looks for different things.
