    Seiko SLA057 is a beautiful pro diver from Seiko with a couple key new features. Replicable crown, a new patented alloy that is more corrasion resistant then Rolex's 904L SS and a hand assembled movement. Put those feature together with Grand Seiko like finishing on the hands and hand polished case and you have a special timepieces. Snobs need not apply.

    Coming back to this video after a month of owning the SLA057 and it's absolutely incredible! Compared to the Tudor BB58 I had, this thing is on another level in terms of finishing. It's a very special watch and one that stays on my wrist 24/7. Most definitely my favorite watch I've ever owned!

    After about 6 months of ownership I have to say that this thing is unbelievably accurate. Once the movement has broken in it and with daily wear it is pretty much spot on.
    The rugged steel case is without any scratches or signs of wear. Looks like the day I got it out of the box.
    Awesome!
    Worth every penny.

    FT, you nailed it with this review. Got the 055 and the strap is finally a usable length but the minder is awful. Put the steel, signed minder on from my original MM300 strap - perfect. The indices are stunning, the most enchanting dial of any watch I have. As for price point - this watch is head and shoulders over anything I have similar or double the money in terms of fit and finish. Regulating the movement (or not) is frustrating but I will take the finishing over this any day of the week. I watched your Sub comparison video and although you state it was a bit of fun it raises some very valid points. Take the name off the dial and compare to any Tudor or Omega, honestly this will win hands down. To those who buy the brand I say good on you, we all do, but don’t dismiss this watch because it’s a Seiko - it’s stunning.

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  Pƙed 2 lety +2

      There's also other details that Seiko does not mention, but because I can't get 100% confirmation, I don't really mention them. But if you're curious, Seiko hardens each piece of the movement individually which only Patek does and then on top of that rhodium plates it. Other high-end manufacturers also rhodium plate.
      Also, the case back has a second gasket inside which I assume is for a second line of defense for moisture. Again, I don't have a confirmation what that second gasket is for but very cool. Most high in seiko with the 6L and 8L have this double gasket system, one surrounding the movement and one in the case back.

    Seiko makes wonderful watches with robust movements BUT they need to start caring about the accuracy of their watches especially at this price point.
    There’s no justification for a watch with a phenomenal movement like the 8L35 to be running so off .
    There should be no reason for a customer to have to go through the hassle to regulate the movement for accuracy.
    My SLA055 was running +10 seconds a day consistently until I had it regulated and now it is spot on three months running!!
    That tells me the absolute quality of the movement as it is essentially as accurate as a quartz! What’s the point for Seiko to create a movement like this but not bother to regulate for accuracy?

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  Pƙed rokem +1

      yes they are incredible movements. I think they only don't regulate for marketing and to make people want to buy a GRAND SEIKO. It is awful business mindset.

      I had waited for 40mm GS diver for over 8 years until I saw SLA057 released. I doubt we will see small GS watches. Few years ago they released a slim spring drive movement, but put it in huge 44mm diver's watch SLGA015. All GS diver's are huge and weird, even quartz models.
      In my opinion Seiko will continue to release diver's, build in GS studio with GS quality, but under Seiko logo as it has rich history and design catalog. Community begged for smaller GS diver for years, and I think the SLA057 is the Seiko's response. Also Seiko have a lot mid-range 40mm divers. And i doubt that Seiko will release smaller GS soon.
      So it's enough waiting for me, I bought SLA057.

    Great vid, buddy. A very nice watch! Seiko playing with design ideas before a new Everbrilliant (bracelet) Marinemaster 200? No bracelet here is to keep price down. A high spec bracelet would add $500+. Spec is getting good, quality looking very high. Looks well beyond Tudor and similar to Omega/Rolex (but then cost is - in UK, ÂŁ800 less than a braceletted, regulated SMP). I'm not 100% on the design - dimensions, case and face are great, but that bezel... a bit clunky and heavy looking? Anyhow, all irrelevant because of... drum roll: THAT 'X!'
    NOOOOO!!! WHY??? Like a Playstation/X Box knockoff or a Chinese SUV! You're totally right, at SLA level the watches need to have a different mark, the X makes them look $500, coincidentally, like their $500 watches... But c'mon Seiko, this is $5000! Time to get serious and that includes branding. Regulating will cost too much and then they're gonna have to charge the same as Omega. People want bracelets and then they'll be more expensive. We know it would be worth it. I'd expect an Everbrilliant Marinemaster 300 on bracelet to be $6k. Ouch. The only precedent were the LXs and the SBEX001/003. Will the market buy? I would, if it didn't have the X, but they'd be treading on GS toes. Dude, which reminds me - you have to get an Evo 9 Diver in for review!!!

      Basically the same movement with the same components, just different finishing. The 8L35B has the new escapement skeletonized using MEMS technology, just like the Grand. And the whole movement is based on the first generation 9S. It has since been upgraded for Grand Seiko with improvements like 35 jewels instead of 26 like the 9s55 and 8L

    The need for something akin to COSC or METAS comes up a lot in Seiko discussion forums. You can get a COSC certified ETA/Sellita/STP for less than $2K. (My $1500 Zodiac has one). Seiko doesn't promise any better than -10/+15 on the 8L, which is basic elabore grade 2892 accuracy.
    As for these "super MM200s," the ISO compliance continues to be a huge design problem for Seiko. Bevel or not, the date position still looks terrible, and shoving a blob of lume into the minute track is not a solution either. I think Seiko needs to abandon the 28.5mm dial size they've been using for decades, and go to 29.5-30mm on their pro divers.

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      Yes, I like the idea of a new dial size, it would be a huge benefit in many other ways, especially against modders, homages, if they control the new dial sizes inventory. They wont be able to get the right look. They still can't in most cases but it would create even more of a divide.

    I know some of you think with that price point, it should be a GS not Seiko. But let me tell something, in Japan, or some Asia countries, they bought Toyota Altezza, which is an expensive Toyota that prices similar to Mercedes and BMW counterparts. But that wouldn't work in Western markets, so Toyota marketed Toyota Altezza as Lexus IS in the West. Similar to Toyota Harrier in Japan and some Asia markets, the West wouldn't buy Toyota Harrier so Toyota marketed them as Lexus RX. Another example is Honda Civic FD in Japan and other Asia markets, but Honda renamed it as Acura CSX in the West. One more example, Honda NSX is marketed as Acura NSX. They are the same cars, but the West is so obsessed with brands so Toyota Honda and Nissan have to create Lexus Acura and Infiniti. If you know the products, the quality and the reliability, why care so much about brands?

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  Pƙed 2 lety +3

      It is a great example. If you judge the product on its merits it is a different story. West cares more about being in a movie like Omega watches. James bond actor only wears the Seamaster because he is paid millions and forced to wear it. So it is fake fame, and forced marketing. Now people go to the 007 movies wearing their Seamaster and feel pride for some reason! Great marketing departments!

    I have to say, its always funny to hear people talk about watches lasting multiple generations. As nice as that sounds, unless you're talking about a rolex, or some other high end luxury brand, most brands, like seiko, only keep spare parts for a maximum of 10 to 15 years, after that, if a component breaks, its unlikely to be able to be repaired after that.

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  Pƙed měsĂcem +2

      Actually it's very simple with modern technology some watchmakers can even make their own parts now it's pretty incredible. But I have some vintage seikos that are over 60 years old with all original parts. (check out my vintage seiko reviews to see how they fair on the timegrapher) Back then they were made to a very high degree with high quality parts just like the modern sla line

    • @AnnoyinglyCharming
      @AnnoyinglyCharming Pƙed měsĂcem

      15 years after the caliber is done production, not after the watch is released. In some cases they could make the caliber for over 50 years easily. Then continue to produce parts for 15 years which they do not throw out. These spare parts are not in high demand as you rarely need a part if you service the watch correctly. Seiko only 'guarantees' it for 15 years but in my experience they always have the spare parts.

      @DeepsGnome Pƙed měsĂcem

      @@EscapementWatch its possible, the technology exists, but is very expensive and rare to find a waychmaker these days that will do it. • @DeepsGnome
      @DeepsGnome Pƙed měsĂcem

      @@AnnoyinglyCharming mostly modern calibres get updated every 20 years or so. And a watch released today could have a 15 year old calibre in it. Giving it 5 years till retired, extra 15 years on top of that for parts, you're looking at 20-30 years of parts being available. You're certainly gonna struggle getting a 40 year old watch repaired from alot of mid tier brands. So that usually rules out multiple generations of wear...
      In any case, its still great that you can purchase a watch that will most likely be possible to last the rest of your life, which is great in this modern age of disposable items, its just unfortunately unrealistic to assume most watch could be past on to not only the next generation, but also the generation after that...
