That would justify the total price a lot more than being 20$ less and having softlex... While I mostly agree with many points, it really is unrealistic to expect the sort of prices we paid grey for the old Seiko 5s in today’s day and age. We were happy to pay $120 for an old SNXS on a grey market dealer but what were we really getting? A terribly outdated movement that couldn’t be handwound nor hacked, a godawful bracelet that made its way to the bin 10 seconds after peeling the stickers, basically no warranty to speak of and a mismatched case and bracelet. And we were happy to part with that money! Of course the retail price on these new releases is excessive, they are just released after all, but the watch has been improved and this has a cost, especially when taking into account warranties, which is something that tends to fall by the wayside when reviewing watches. Mark’s video on the issue was a real eye opener.

    • @taham33
      @taham33 Před 23 dny +13

      And now, you can spend three fiddy hundred pounds for a watch with a terribly outdated movement, a godawful bracelet that will make its way to the bin ten minutes after peeling the stickers, a pitiful warranty (the only good thing about the nh3X movement is that you don't need a warranty, but still) and a mismateched case and bracelet. Add a dive style bezel to add a little bit of randomness with the alignment and you got yourself a DEAL

      The secondary market shows the value of these watches. Whether they sell or not shows the value of new watches. The presenter sulking that a popular style is being sold at a higher price because it can command that price is madness. Rolex ARE NOT WORTH THEIR PRICES - but people pay it because the brand name can command that price.

  • @hellspawn
    @hellspawn Před 23 dny +77

    Seiko's present such poor value for money in the modern watch market, it's unreal. I think a lot of people in this space have completely forgotten what made them so appealling in the first place: 1) They were cheap. 2) They were decent quality. We've now reached a point where Chinese watches can be had for way under 100 quid with comparable case finishing to a Seiko in the 200 or even 300 range, and if you're willing to spend the same amount of money as you would on one of these Seiko's, you could get something way more interesting with a better movement and finishing from any number of microbrands. They're good watches, but they just don't make sense anymore from a value POV and I don't get why people keep buying them these days.

After seeing these new models in person it felt underwhelming almost. For over £300 I would've expected a lot more. The value to be had with the older models is still by far the best selling point for me, They're stylish, versatile, and easily repairable. Something about the new design just doesn't click for me. If I had to get a similar styled watch I'd probably go for the Erebus Ascent, it's a spec monster and just looks amazing with its dial variations.

With its 7s26, rudimentary case finishing and agricultural folded bracelet it absolutely doesn't hold a candle to the new model. Still, at a price that seems to be a bit lower than even the old model, it could be a decent pick for the price, especially if the case doesn't float above the wrist. Ohhh ya thats why you can go to any mod site and get a sapphire crystal for $20-$40 or even cheaper of shopped over sea. So if they sell them for that cheap and make a good profit from them that means they are getting then cheap. Seiko could do it even cheaper so whats the actual truth on why they dont use it?

    Well, you could say they did this before adopting the model name instead of just the calibre name and case number. Just look at the 7009-3040 versus the SNXS79. As far as I'm concerned, I don't like glass backs as it was the steel backs that held the information that was important to collectors and paint on glass is just not as durable as engravings in stainless steel (yes I know there are sometimes engavings in the bezel for the glass back), and I hate the trend to dinnerplate sized watches though that fortunstely seems to be petering out.
    Having the seconds hacking feature is great, that was something that they used to always intentionally leave out of the Seiko 5 line though there was unofficial ways of getting the seconds hand to move backwards by trying to set the time back in time which the Seiko manuals advise against.
    It is time for them to move to sapphire coated glass though. Hardplex may have been better than the mineral glass that was common when it was untroduced but everyone has sapphie now and with that chambered cut, modding with a third party sapphire crystal though possible (you can either force a straight cut 2mm crystal or a 1.5 mm crystal in to replace the chambered 1.7mm crystal), is not a perfect fit.

    Thanks for highlighting this Ben! Although you can link them together, they do represent a different watch buyer principle where the SNXS was that entry to mechanical watches and this one is well.. for the nostalgia? Glad you pointed out the triple naming on the website, it actually feels out of touch as I think it's the same group they try to approach with these names.
    I do not know where the price is going to land however I still think anything between 250-300eu there would be a market by value on just realistically adding inflation / the movement / the case. I'm just more in for that action from Citizen right now having two great small second everyday options out there (Tsuyosa small seconds & the new titanium small seconds)
    About your wife, assume it's the faux patina markers. Generally when people like a watch yet can't describe why, its the beige from the patina or a well finished watch (you just don't know how crisp metal can be before you see it with your own eyes), some assumptions here but where would we be without them!
    Thanks Ben!

      Yup. You buy them, wear them, run the movement into the ground and then simply buy a new cheap watch 10 or 15 years later. That is why these price increases don't make sense (apart from inflation). They're not quality watches. And people pretend like there is this huge difference between 7s and 4R movements but at the same time deny that there is a huge difference between mineral and sapphire. All while Seiko are refusing to fit them with good bracelets which they can easily source from China where they already do most of their production anyway. Nothing can make a watch worth it's price or more like a proper bracelet. Solid links, screws, quick release, milled clasp and on the fly adjustment. And they are dirt cheap in China.

    Hmm, I have full confidence in Seiko!❤
    And if they need to increase the price then I guess that it is really something they need to do.. Let me explain my view point:
    That is making me worried about the world currency and inflation issues instead than Seiko is milking us!
    That we have a big issue with our fiat currencies that is soon not worth anything.
    So I think that the greater issue is not Seiko it is more our currency that spirals down and is diminishing in value!😢
    Or in another way to say it:
    If Seiko were priced in Bitcoin (satoshis) currency instead. Then for example then we would have a price cut (!) in the price tag of the amount of Bitcoin that the watch costs from Seiko!
    When Bitcoin value goes up and less is needed to buy the same watch and Seiko still get what they need..😅
    The totally opposite to what is happening to fiat currency that by default ALWAYS go down in value more or less speed that is called inflation and faster decline is hyper inflation..😢

    Bought the black version and it is better in everyway than the model it replaces (except one) and personally love the way it looks and fits. The price should start with a 2 not a 3 but the biggest gripe I have is the accuracy of the movement. It runs 20 seconds slow per day as does my Seiko Save the Ocean Turtle which simply isn't good enough. My old Seikos always run fast but by no more than 11 seconds per day including 7S26's . Put simply, if you really like it, get one at a discounted price but there are many other brands out there offering more for less with greater accuracy. Have you seen Seiko's new "Pogue"...£600 and for me other than the colours looks nothing like one, now that really is taking the Michael😮

      Yeah don't sell it. If the SARB came out today, it would probably be close to a $1000 MSRP. You can get similar value from a cocktail time today though, for substantially less than a 2nd hand SARB would set you back now. I suspect the same thing will happen when the cocktail time has gone out of production, and only its much more expensive replacements will be available. We'll look back and think "Shit did they _really_ change hands for so little? Why didn't I buy one in every color?"

    I think it looks great. And it is a sub 38mm. The comparison should not be the old price but rather what you have to pay elsewhere. Any other brand big or micro charges way more for vintage look, feel and sizing. Exceptions are Islander and Ali Express. Islanders become pricey when you ship them to Europe and Ali Express is a world I'm not interested in. In that competition clear win for Seiko.

    You're right but most watch companies are ramping up the prices above inflation, just compare the price of the new Aqua Terra with a few years ago. I don't like it but unless the public stop paying the inflated prices it's not going to stop. After all Seiko isn't in the business of making watches they are there to make money. My SNKS77 (new) was less than a tenth of the current new price leaving plenty to change the bracelet for a jubilee style and put in double domed sapphire with ar, looks fabulous. I have a SNZH55K1 too, as standard its better than the new one. In my experience the 7s26/36 is more consistent than the nh35, so I'm just missing out on hacking which I can live with. Lack of hand winding is not a problem on a decent automatic.

It’s both vintage and modern, whereas the old one just looks incredibly dated. Overall, it just looks much better than the old one. And the kanji date wheel is such a cool addition.
